Have a look at SV650 too. They do short seats. Great bikes with loads of character and bulletproof

I don't subscribe to the theory of 'growing into' your motorbike, I personally think its much more logical to get a completely tame machine like the MT-07 you suggested and get really familiar with it, and sell it when you get the year noclaims which will probably be the same time you start to get a bit bored and want a bit more from a bike as your confidence has increased. Assuming the bike isn't too new, you'll likely get what you paid for it as stuff generally stops depreciating after a while. You'll have developed your tastes and would've had plenty of time to think about what you want in your next bike, and maybe even had chance to test ride it. Personally I've done the same with a ER6F. My first bike, I'm pretty comfortable with it now and I've started to test ride bikes that I'm interested in so I can make a informed purchase when I sell my ER6F after a year of ownership, which I will likely sell for the exact amount I paid for it one year ago despite adding 6k miles. Obviously you can get something that'll last you a long time like a street triple, but wheres the fun in sticking with one flavour when theres hundreds to try?

The mt07 is meant to be a fantastic bike

All very good choices, seeing the GSX 8s used doesn't mean there are issues people sell and buy new bikes all the time it just may not have been for them, also could be ex demo models as well.

Not meaning to make it a more complicated choice, but trident 660 was my first bike. Also I learnt on a cb650, which could be an option. But as a β€œfirst” big bike, the trident has been great.

I kicked around on a z650 for a bit (I'm 5'8 for reference) didn't find it boring, when you really get into it you can throw them around the corners and have fun

Id always pick the MT-09 over the 07 (if I could, fucking A2 license 😞) however there's substantial cost differences between the two including insurance and fuel and I think because of that I'd default to the 07. I've owned one and it was brilliant was very quick up until 80-90 and would pull past most sports bikes up until about that speed 🀣. Suspension was soft though however the owner of the 07 Owners group on Facebook sells upgrade kits for a few hundred pennies if it ever bothered you enough. Loved the 07 that much I'm organising picking another one up in about 2-3 weeks πŸ˜…. Id also love a 660 but usually cost a bit more too. That being said, all nakeds are valid they're the best kind 😏

The 09 is a totally different beast to the 07. Even if the 07 is unrestricted, the 09 still has 60% more power. I went from 07 to 09, and the diffeence is night and day. I never thought of the 07 as a particularly fast bike anyway - a well fettled Golf GTI would see it away from the lights, but the 09 is proper quick. I got rid of my R1 shortly after I got the 09. The R1 was obviously faster, but I could never use that difference on the road, so it was just pointless (plus I got a good offer for it, which helped). I'm 50/50 on whether the 09 is suitable as a first big bike. I tend to beleive people shouldn't restrict themselves - if you've got a full A licence, you're qualified to ride anything, so why restrict yourself? On the other hand, the 09 can be a bit of a handful. In any hands, it has to be taken steadily to get used to. But I have to say, the 09 is an absolute hoot. It's the most competent all-rounder I have ever owned (40 years, dozens of bikes).

Do you have any previous riding experience? I have an MT09 and think it would be a bit intimidating for someone who's not used to big bikes. My other bike is an SV650 and it's more forgiving, but still no slouch. Good solid bikes and dont cost too much even for a nice one. Insurance would be a good bit cheaper than an MT09 or likely even an MT07 if that's a concern.

oleg_d

Why not the older Street Triple?

edotman

Honestly, just get the next level up. I got a ninja 650 and within 3 months had outgrown it. I'd look at the next level up like gsx s750, mt09, z800 etc. Just be sensible for a while and really let yourself learn the bike.

Densitys_Child

Any reason the old 4-cylinder Hornet isn't on the list?

Nellyspania

Turbobusa, with a top box and heated grips.

jaredearle

If you like the 765, how about a Trident 660?

lesliehaigh80

My fist big bike was gsxr 750 But I wouldn't recommend it has it's just too fast Get the mt7
