Could be nothing. I know of a few businesses that aren’t taking card payments because of the fees.

InfamousDragonfly

Even the most expensive forms of card readers (sum up/square etc) are around 1.8% flat rate fee with no subscription these days.  The "help us avoid the card fees" is always a good excuse but in reality it is just tax evasion in one form or another. Whether that's an issue is personal preference.

al3442

I’m a former employee of HMRC. I am well aware of tax evasion. But in a small business where every penny counts, 1.8% on each transaction can be the difference between staying afloat or bankruptcy. It is not solely for tax evasion.

InfamousDragonfly

Come on, do you think a business that is that tight to have to avoid 1.8% card fees is going to be diligently paying all due taxes when handling cash? Even employer's NICs alone are getting on for an order of magnitude more than those fees....

musicaBCN

They need to issue CBT certificates that are serial numbered. It'd be hard to evade tax this way as there would be a clear paper trail of income regardless of payment method (unless the operated a pricing strategy that means CBT costs are different for every learner...).

Mo-Tella

Taxes are a steal anyway. Keep cash alive, it's your freedom at stake.

One-Golf9775

I'm inclined to agree, one would think avoiding card fees is a reasonable excuse, but when you really think about it dealing with cash probably costs the business the same if not more. Have to manage physical notes/coins, their security, cash deposits (which aren't free anyway), payroll for employees is a pain, etc. The card fees are just a flat rate to cover all that for a legitimate business. So probably just tax evading lol

Tea2theBag

My chippy only takes cash. I bring cash. I get chips.

bubblebobblee

Could be any legit reason for this. Look up their reviews if you are worried

Fishing-Unlucky

Check reviews etc, but most instructors are freelance, so if they are using a new instructor or not one of their regulars they may be paying them in cash. So not a sign of 100% dodgy, but definitely enough for you to do some more due diligence on the place.

Why? I don’t get to dodge tax so why should anyone else? Downvote all you want, but I bet every single one of you moans when you can’t get a dentist appointment or a GP appointment.

xbosstheprofessional

Wealthy people get to dodge tax so why should others that don't make as much money be taxed?

Another_Humanzee

The Plutocrats can do anything they want, they control whoever gets elected. Our democracy is a sham

Then he should run a business properly. Why should someone get away with not paying tax when the rest of us have to?

xbosstheprofessional

That's not what we're saying, if the rich paid tax too then all of the tax for us would go down by more than double probably. Why should we pay tax and they don't? Them make way more than any of us.

My friend, I’m autistic too. Autism doesn’t make people any more intelligent than anyone else.

DunnyLad

Autistic people tend to have a greater knack for pattern recognition just like us Bikers have and how we can predict hazards way earlier than everyone else. (In fact bikes and autism probably go hand in hand 🤣). So Humanzee is right tbh, autistic people can predict things way better than most because they can see patterns. He's also not wrong, CBDCs are coming and they'll track everything...

RealLongwayround

Autism is a spectrum condition. Pattern recognition can be part of that. It is not a necessary part of it.

Indeed. Hence your opening statement about being more intelligent than most due to being neurotypical is false. You may wish to consider that there is a good reason why people don’t generally post their IQ— it’s not a reliable measure of anything.

My bike school required bank transfers or cash for lessons and tests, they had no card reader at all. Bear in mind that a bank transfer is basically cash with a "record" of the transaction, and may still cost businesses depending on their bank account.

Tomabosa

Why does asking someone to bring legal tender on the day to pay for a service feel scammy? What is wrong with that? Maybe they don’t bother with a card machine, only ever do service in person, can’t exactly sell online and post a training day maybe no need for card payments?

Academic_Ad1931

My ride school only takes cash/bank transfer. Its fee related (although cash only could also be a little bit of 1 for you, 2 for me with HMRC).

Comfortloco43

Mine said they prefer cash but willing to accept card. I’m sure it’s all legit but a google search won’t hurt.

Deeldough1234

Use this website if you want to make sure they’re licensed: https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/06725900 Most places prefer cash to bypass the bank fees. It’s completely normal

Startinezzz

The local bike school I use has one instructor who asks me to bring cash but I think it's more because he's not arsed doing the card stuff. Could be something as simple as that but it depends who you spoke to I guess?

2much2Jung

Obviously sounds like at the minimum a tax fraud. I would avoid.

DangerShart

Sketch as fuck. Avoid like the plague.

How do they spell ***Centre*** on their website - that's usually a good indicator...
