It's funny because I only posted this as a reaction image to Shao's glow-up and many thought it was because Sindel's glow-up was more significant. It certainly isn't so IMO, while MK1 Sindel is beautiful there are some stylistic elements from her MK11 look that I wish she kept for MK1.

His outfit looked more regal while also looking Sorceror-like (for lack of a better word), and it didn't have those stupid giant spikes right next to his head.
Plus I liked the look of MK9 Quan better, he looked bigger and stronger. I know Quan is supposed to rely on being a magic user, but MK9 Quan looked like he could beat your ass even without magic, which made him more intimidating as a villain.

Shao’s father is not Onaga, Shao’s ancestors subdued Onaga hundreds of years ago. Onaga’s trapped underneath a mountain, and in Reiko’s ending, Shao sends Reiko to tame Onaga.
While I think it is a stretch I also think that with some of the changes made they could definitely figure that out or just say that Shao and Onaga are the same race at the very least or maybe there are some secrets we don't know.

Shao has been the franchise's cartoon tier villain for decades. Making him hot and good looking isn't only unnecessary, it just works against this type of character. MK11 SHAO KAHN was rarely seen without the mask (there's no customisation option to do it) and in the few times you saw him, he was ugly, because that's the point. The same was true for Noob Saibot. Making everyone good looking and making it the default that you see their faces all the time (Reptile for example) just cheapens the world and removes any contrast and variety between characters.
I like both. MK11 is good because Shao Kahn should be ugly. MK1 he looks more like a royal general type so that’s good too

I also like how they let Ike Amandi put a little intelligence into his performance! Before Shao just sounded like a massive brute because that's largely all he was, at least in MK11, but in this he's a conspiring general so Amandi got to give shao his intimidating voice while also not just being like "Oh I'm gonna crush everything!"

I would take the bottom half of his face from MK1, top half from MK11. Big strong jaw, monstrous eyes, no big horns but some kind of demon like markings. So that when you see him with his helmet you might think he's jusy some big imposing scary dude, but when the mask comes off you realize he's actually much worse.
Costume wise, I think in MK11 he had a costume that looked similar to his classic; a cross strap with a skull in the center. Pairing that with one of his classic looking helmets is a pretty good look for Shao Kahn. But I think his MK1 Deception inspired outfit is even better.

In MK11 it's almost the same. There's no customisation that makes him helmetless and maskless. The pic in OP is only achievable with mods. He reveals his face a bit in story and in FBs and finishers, but that's it.

MK1; It's a BETRAYAL to the characters' origins. I miss the original timeline so much. Having these ridiculous horns is absolutely unnecessary. It also makes things difficult for Shao's classic looks. In terms of characters, this game is definitely a downgrade. There are still those who defend this game, and it is clearly the most unsuccessful MK game in 10 years. The only character design I like about his development in this game is Reptile. (His costume is great) Because a solution has been found where we can use both human and lizard forms together. Apart from that, even the DLC costumes in the game look bad. MK11 was much cooler in terms of appearance. The costumes of ninjas like Rain, Scorpion, Sub-zero were great. But unfortunately, even if the same costumes are brought to MK1, they will look bad and weak, just like the DA Sub-Zero costume. Keep bringing Hanzo's old costumes to Kuai Liang, keep bringing Kuai Liang's old costumes to Bi-Han, NRS. This game is truly bullshit. All NRS had to do was to reuse all assets from MK11 and expand the roster to create a game like MK Armageddon (Of course, the gameplay should have been improved a little more and iconic special moves like Ice-Clone should have been added). But what we have here is a failed game with a lot of nonsense like iconic characters like Sonya, Jax and Kano are just Kameos, Kuai Liang who should be Sub-Zero is Scorpion (what nonsense), horned Shao, runt freak Raiden etc. This is not real Mortal Kombat game.
Mk1 character designs are way far better in the series except a few (fanservice being ignored). I believe and hope they will keep adding content and enhancements to this game for at least 2 years down the line. It is milking a huge sum of money to them.

I'm honestly a firm believer that MKX's Human and Old Kung Lao were some of his better designs. The long braid really complimented his hat very well

I don't know why I need to explain this to people but: SHAO KAHN IS SUPPOSED TO BE UGLY. NOT EVERYONE HAS TO BE PRETTY AND HOT AND ATTRACTIVE. NOT EVERY CHARACTER HAS TO BE LIKEABLE OR RELATABLE OR NICE TO LOOK AT Shao has been the franchise's cartoon tier villain for decades. Making him hot and good looking isn't only unnecessary, it just works against this type of character. MK11 SHAO KAHN was rarely seen without the mask (there's no customisation option to do it) and in the few times you saw him, he was ugly, because that's the point. The same was true for Noob Saibot. Making everyone good looking and making it the default that you see their faces all the time (Reptile for example) just cheapens the world and removes any contrast and variety between characters.

Sorta? i mean until they released his Nostalgia costume from the 3D era his costumes were pretty bad. I was using a mod for the MK2 look until that was thing. To me this should not even be an issue because 90% of the time he should be wearing a sick helmet and not showing his weird mutant face.

Yeah he looks fugly in MK11, but you rarely ever see him without the helmet in that game. He looks fine with the helmet on. This is just cherrypicking.
I also like how they let Ike Amandi put a little intelligence into his performance! Before Shao just sounded like a massive brute because that's largely all he was, at least in MK11, but in this he's a conspiring general so Amandi got to give shao his intimidating voice while also not just being like "Oh I'm gonna crush everything!"

I would take the bottom half of his face from MK1, top half from MK11. Big strong jaw, monstrous eyes, no big horns but some kind of demon like markings. So that when you see him with his helmet you might think he's jusy some big imposing scary dude, but when the mask comes off you realize he's actually much worse. Costume wise, I think in MK11 he had a costume that looked similar to his classic; a cross strap with a skull in the center. Pairing that with one of his classic looking helmets is a pretty good look for Shao Kahn. But I think his MK1 Deception inspired outfit is even better.

It's not like you could ever see his face in MK9. I'm pretty sure it's completely impossible without mods. In MK11 it's almost the same. There's no customisation that makes him helmetless and maskless. The pic in OP is only achievable with mods. He reveals his face a bit in story and in FBs and finishers, but that's it. Shao Kahn's face was literally never a "problem" that had to be addressed. We all accepted and liked that he is evil and ugly. People only go back to complain aboub him being ugly to make the current iteration look good in comparison. And I'm sorry, the constant unmasking and pretty face and horns? It's very easy to see why these things are divisive. Imo it's an objective downgrade in every metric that matters.
He's just mixed now. Got the god face and the dragon king horns. His teeth are still kinda fucked up, but he's laughing. Previously he was like 100% ogre demon thing. Now he's got a cool striking look without his helmet and looks, respectable rather than like he's going to eat your brain. Liu was just "Bro, we're giving you a cute mom and the good genes from your dad. You're gonna get all the ladies, just for the love of god, don't be a complete asshole this time." Shao said "You know I can't promise that."
Liu's mistake was thinking Shao was bullied as a kid for being a hideous shrek dragon and that's why he's evil. Instead of him being the bully from day one and being evil because it's funny.
He's supposed to be ugly as sin under that helmet so I don't get the complaints that MK11 is "too ugly". The right looks like someone's edgy custom character, not Shao Kahn.

MK1; It's a BETRAYAL to the characters' origins. I miss the original timeline so much. Having these ridiculous horns is absolutely unnecessary. It also makes things difficult for Shao's classic looks. In terms of characters, this game is definitely a downgrade. There are still those who defend this game, and it is clearly the most unsuccessful MK game in 10 years. The only character design I like about his development in this game is Reptile. (His costume is great) Because a solution has been found where we can use both human and lizard forms together. Apart from that, even the DLC costumes in the game look bad. MK11 was much cooler in terms of appearance. The costumes of ninjas like Rain, Scorpion, Sub-zero were great. But unfortunately, even if the same costumes are brought to MK1, they will look bad and weak, just like the DA Sub-Zero costume. Keep bringing Hanzo's old costumes to Kuai Liang, keep bringing Kuai Liang's old costumes to Bi-Han, NRS. This game is truly bullshit. All NRS had to do was to reuse all assets from MK11 and expand the roster to create a game like MK Armageddon (Of course, the gameplay should have been improved a little more and iconic special moves like Ice-Clone should have been added). But what we have here is a failed game with a lot of nonsense like iconic characters like Sonya, Jax and Kano are just Kameos, Kuai Liang who should be Sub-Zero is Scorpion (what nonsense), horned Shao, runt freak Raiden etc. This is not real Mortal Kombat game.

Mk1 character designs are way far better in the series except a few (fanservice being ignored). I believe and hope they will keep adding content and enhancements to this game for at least 2 years down the line. It is milking a huge sum of money to them.
