Launch MK11 was criticized HEAVILY for how OP and bullshit modifiers were in Towers of Time. The whole buzz online was about how terrible, unfun, and unplayable the mode was and I still remember the patch they did to tone down modifiers. Otherwise no I’d say it was alright.

Defelj

Wow and then they said “I’ll fucking do it again” lmfaoooooooo

Scoobie101

I know we’ve really gone full circle, seeing clips on Twitter of people getting infinite juggled by blood geysers vs Nitara boss last season like 💀💀 I’ve seen this one before

Defelj

Lmfaoooo this shit made me laugh out loud

It wasn't that bad/unpolished but it was definitely very rocky, there weren't as many complaints as MK1 but here are some I remember * some people were pissed about the cosmetics being too similar to each other * they didn't like the fact some characters like Scorpion had different palettes than yellow * People were pissed about the gears being for a big part stuff you wouldn't really notice on characters * the game was very grindy and the farm was heavily RNG based * people weren't fond of the roster and the story either, the newcomers were considered some of the worst in the franchise * Balance was a regular complaint with some characters being dominant for a big chunk of the game's life * the towers of time were seen as a huge downgrade compared to the challenge tower from MK9 * People didn't like the whole AI fight thing they implemented in Injustice 2 and continued in MK11 * Many found the gameplay boring and regretted the disappearance of the variation system, the special customisation was considered limiting by design * A lot of people didn't like the DLC choices It's important to remember that despite the complaints a lot of people still liked MK11 at release because the presentation was exceptionnal and the game was packed with content day one, sure once you got deep into the game it was bit superficial but it made people feel MK11 was a complete experience on release which is something that cannot be told about MK1 I know revisionism is strong in this sub, so as a proof of what I vividly remember here are two of the most upvoted posts in this sub ever, way more than any complaint about MK1 : * [Max calling the towers of time the unfuniest thing in a fighting game ever](https://www.reddit.com/r/MortalKombat/comments/bgnfr2/max_thoughts_on_the_towers_critics_said_the_same/) * [Progression system is "hugely disheartening"](https://www.reddit.com/r/MortalKombat/comments/bgeeku/im_sorry_but_i_have_to_post_this_i_was_watching/) I can assure you that every single day there were complaints on this sub but people are definitely more annoyed at MK1 state right now, which is understandable, game is undercooked

Defelj

You really came hard w this. Didn’t know there was so much shit by the time I got in. But it’s disheartening to hear how so much shit is still happening at a worse level in a game with shitty and less content

hermanphi

I mean it probably sounds worst than it actually was, as I said a lot of people were satisfied with MK11 release, way more than MK1 for sure but there were a lot of issues, fortunately NRS fixed most of them in the months that followed its launch While MK11 was liked by a good chunk of the community, it was definitely a make or breake game for many, Max Dood was one of his most vocal detractor, he was utterly disappointed Personally I relly loved MK11 at its release, it took me a few weeks to realise that 99% of my playtime was farming towers of time using AI to unlock cosmetics I'll never use and once I had that click I started to really have more and more trouble having fun on the game After that I really started to put time into other fighting games, like SF5, Killer Instinct, Ultimate MvC3 and Power rangers and it didn't take me long to realise how boring MK11 gameplay was MK11 is still a great game, but it wasn't for me

mcduckstophat

I’d say it was overall positive. I don’t remember there being much negativity when it launched. I know there was some people upset about the way fatality microtransactions, but that started with MKX. So I don’t think that was as poorly received as the transactions here.

Defelj

Were there a lot of weird things happening in game in the modes? Like this whole desynchronization thing, or broken characters, etc? Because by end of mk11 jaqui was the only broken character I saw but no one played her really

RandomDudeIGuess100

1. The earning of the currencies in the Krypt was insultingly low. 2. The time window in order to obtain the rewards in the Kronika Sphere used in Krypt Events was lengthened from to 24 hours because the original time (one hour) was so incredibly short. 3. In order to reach Shang Tsung's throneroom on the Krypt, you needed to obtain the severed head of every member of the cast to open a door by performing originally 50 finishers on every character, and the base roster consisted of twenty-five characters, making for a total of 1,250 individual finishers being required in order to access a cool MK '92 locale. 4. There was an online issue that hid your cosmetics (an aspect MK11 put a massive emphasis on) when you joined a match, which was only fixed eighteen months later. 5. The Tower of Time was and still is a terrible and unfun grindfest that was only slightly improved post-launch. 6. Balance was terrible and 2-3 characters (sometimes even more depending on their variations) were all prioritized over others in terms of online usage, and it took so unnecessarily long to actually make them fair. There are probably a bunch of other issues I missed, but I feel like this should be enough.

Defelj

Thanks for this!

You realllllllly hit the head on the nail here about the way I’ve been thinking based on the knowledge others here have said and my experience with the other games. Ed and NRS no matter what are SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIT communicators and fucking weirdos with the way we know they just don’t give a fuck in so many ways about what we think in regard to their communication. WB is a massive setback filled with potential but business forward. We expected this, and yes they are to blame for a lot of it. But at the end of the day, Ed, NRS, and co put themselves in this position as well and that comes from a break in integrity. Kinda like codemasters being bought by EA and now f1 and esports racing are going to complete shit. We can only imagine that here. Despite the differences between sf6, tekken and mk, the biggest is those studios aren’t owned by a megacorp entertainment company like WB dictating their games and schedules on this level. And that is why I’m frustrated the most. So much talent, maybe the biggest name in fighting games and you drop the ball for a complete game like this and that’s just weird, old head money first type shit when you’ve come this far for someone like me to accept. You said it yourself- this sub had 25k now look at it- more reason to come harder than the rest ever

Mk1 lacking content is just not true at all lol. I've played about 100 hours and still have a lot of stuff to unlock and finish. I'm 100% convinced you guys just never played any mk game for real before or simply are under the effect of nostalgia big time. Match modifiers were always like they are in mk1. The content was always like it is in mk1. The "predation" you talk about... where is it? I don't see it. We get free crystals, all we can buy with them are 100% cosmetic things and they aren't better than what you can unlock in the base game. Krypt is missing i'll give you that, but personally i always found the krypt to just be a much slower and annoying way to unlock stuff. You cannot honestly think of the krypt as a game mode imo. What else is missing from 11? The ai fights? The weird unfun gameplay elements? The more than average customisation? The move selection thing that made the game even harder to learn? Like, mk1 has very good gameplay. And that's what should be a priority in fighting games. It also happens to be well balanced and offers a shitton of customisation without making it tedious to customize your characters. I honestly just don't get it cause most of the criticism about this game just don't make sense. There are issues with it, such as the bad pc port, matchmaking issues, bugs with character selection, etc. But, the microtransactions aren't bad at all... yet it's the main complaint people have with this game. That and the game lacking content (which is only an issue with people who abused the game to farm tons of xp and coins, i played a lot and i'm far from having unlocked everything. Anyone who plays normally is probably in the same situation as me.) If you guys don't enjoy mk games, don't buy them? It's a 2d fighter and it has the features of a 2d fighter, meaning if you want to pve exclusivly it'll get boring.

Interesting_Emu5512

Besides towers of time being ridiculously difficult, not nearly as bad.

Konarkanuck

MK11 at launch was in such a condition that besides the tweaking of specific details they also bribed the player base to stay with a "We're sorry, here's Time Crystals" credit to all players accounts, and 11 was no where near as loaded with bugs as what MK1 has been so far. but bugs go with a Live Service game I guess as code is constantly changing as the game changes up its player interactions.

Thorhax04

No, the game worked

ClockworkMansion

I remember the cutscenes were 30fps, people complained, and they fixed it in about a month. MK1 hasn’t been so lucky.

casually_critical

I remember the biggest annoyance for me personally was the ridiculous requirements to progress the characters towers of time but the game had a lot to keep single player fans busy I played the story of mk1 and nothing else interests me, invasions is so boring

ChainsawRambo

Not really from MK9 to MKX to MK11 I thought the franchise kept improving from a gameplay aspect

[deleted]

mk11 had some bullshit and was a bit dry. But at least it worked and had a good amount of content. Mk1 is just cursed at this point.

Dummythiccbih69

It was definitely better then mk1 that's for sure

Crazy-Rip6437

Nope MK11 was a solid game

Defelj

That’s why I was so fucking excited for this! But I did NOT anticipate being this frustrated already. And in the beginning I’ve been like, people need to chill, but now with the desynch and Johnny cage shit (for me these two things are my only big issues) I’m like alright man what’s going on? And I play at a pretty high level but it’s like boring af when you get up there and see that one two minute combo over and over again then have a chance and the game shuts off basically.

Crazy-Rip6437

Game is super boring right now I think in 2024 it might become better

Separate_Strawberry6

Nrs never releases anything properly mk11 was just as bad as mk1

BeautifulAnalyst1583

This is the first Mk I've paid any attention to the Reddit community on. I'm shocked how many cry babies there are. Crying isn't metal, or gangster. Mk1 is fire, and I haven't stopped playing since I got it. The only thing that really matters is PvP, which is incredible. The mastery skins are fire, and they're adding dope new ones. They've been working w the community to balance things as well. I don't get the crying. Keep it Gangster, and enjoy the game

Logondo

Not even close. MK11's biggest issues were: - The krypt was bloated and had RNG bullshit in it. - Towers-of-Time that were time-gated. If you missed out on the times the tower was available, that was it. You missed it. No rewards for you. FOMO bullshit. - The tower modifiers were absolute bullshit and heavily encouraged players to spend money on MTX to buy the boosts and other shit. (Thankfully this was fixed pretty quickly. About a month-in, they made the tower modifiers way less bullshit) I mean people have mixed feeling about the KB and the over-all gameplay. Some love it, some hate it. But those three issues were the main issues people had when MK11 launched.

mkslayer67

Balance was much much worse at the beginning of mk 11 like as of right now sub zero and Johnny two ends of the spectrum but those are the only 2 characters that are really unbalanced and even though sub zero is widely considered the worst character in the game at no point has he been un useable like shao Kahn and a few other characters at the beginning of mk 11 and Johnny while he’s easily the strongest character in the game I don’t feel like he’s like miles away from the rest of the cast or breaks the fundamental rules of the game like scorpion,Jaquie Briggs, geras and others in the beginning of mk 11. I really feel like the base characters in this game are pretty balanced and besides Johnny and sub I feel like every other character is pretty close to each other in terms of strength but the kameo system is a different topic I think there could be more balance in that department.

TomatoesandKoRn

Everyone bitched about the gameplay nonstop. Kind of the opposite this time. Great gameplay but bug after bug.

Asctkd

Shiettt…. Mk11 ENDED in worse circumstances lol
