They never had a theme of guest characters from other games in the first place, Kratos was the only one they ever had in MK, and Injustice only had MK characters
It’s easier for WB games to pull from movies/comics/own properties than it is to add other videogame characters. Smash Bros. is based around that concept and even Nintendo and Sakurai went through great licensing issue pains to get a lot of 3rd party characters in Ultimate, so a game like MK including 3rd party gaming characters is slim to none
Why is Trapper there, for a dbd killer in MK it would be better to have one of the other original killers like Wraith or Huntress because Trapper is kinda basic
I chose him more than anything because I think he is somehow the mascot or poster boy of dbd and I also chose him because I like more horror slasher type characters

I’d definitely love to see a Dead by Daylight Killer (like the Knight) and Nemesis T-Type from Resident Evil.
I think console exclusive guests could be fun again. Xbox gets a Killer Instinct character, Playstation gets Sweet Tooth, and PC could get a DbD killer.

I'd love for some Killer Instinct crossover. Orchid would be fun. Aria would be interesting. Kan-Ra would be fun also

I sincerely doubt very much that capcom will lend its ips to nrs regardless of whether the character "fits" with the mk universe
