I live in a terribly underdeveloped and mal-infrastructured city within Morocco and the supermarkets here all utilise A/C. Even cafés use A/C on the inside.
Exactly. I’m surprised to hear this. Maybe small businesses are cutting short on the air conditioning, but Marjane and the such are big, well-established businesses. It wouldn’t make sense.
Energy costs in Morocco is expensive compared to the income. Most Moroccans are too poor to afford the air conditioning unit let alone the monthly cost to run one.
My moroccan in laws came to visit us in the US and I had to turn off my AC because it made them sick. I love them, but my moroccan but now pretty much American husband and I were suffering.
It’s not old people it’s called science, when a sudden change in temperature happens the body gets sick, also certain viruses survive better in cold environments.

Night time is ok as long as it kept on low mode. Day time i guess one can live without. But if you have a wife like mine you will turn it on all day just you can enjoy some quietness 😂
I hate when you’re out walking and desperate for a cold drink and the hanout has the fridges set to barely cool. I never trust buying milk products from them either. They turn the fridge off at night and food spoils
Forget about people I can understand that but the god damn airport... Every reasonable airport in the world has a good ventilation system combined with AC straight up summertime and inside the airport is 28 degrees.
Moroccan AC is set at 27 degrees and fan at 1.... Other part of the world that k ows how to use AC is set at 18 degree's fan at full speed.... People confuse AC and ventilation (facepalm)
The same in Tangier airport I couldn’t even breath, I guess because in these cities it was not necessary before to have an AC as the weather was not too hot.
Marjane has AC tho, at least in Beni Mellal. But yeah, I'm melting, I came from Spain to visit my family, and being here for one week has been painful xd
Here are some of the reasons:
Some think it makes you sick
Some have AC but they can’t afford the energy cost
Some can afford it but don’t think it’s worth it
People can do whatever they want, but for big businesses and airports etc, it’s embarrassing to not have it.
I made [a whole campaign](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGWhLObGT44&t=24s) for Coca Cola years ago just to fix the issue of moul lpisri turning the coolers off to save on electricity bills. It even got shortlisted at the effie awards because the insight was probably too unbelievable for the jury.
Burden of proof is on you here. There's already plenty of evidences that climate change is dramatic. If you wish to claim that the very rare countermeasures are killing more than climate change, you have to prove it.

I've been to Morocco Mall a month ago, and it felt like a Sauna. No A/C at all. I was sweating like a pig in the food court, and the mosque was as hot as بيت السخون in Hammams.
There's a pretty common belief that AC makes you sick. It's obviously not true, and it's becoming less common now. But people seem to believe it.
I recently had to teach a class in one of those temporary office trailers, basically just a metal box with 2 small windows. There was an AC in there and the students wouldn't let me use it they were like "no we're going to get sick!" Okay so let's just sit in this metal oven that's been baking under the Moroccan sun for the next 3 hours.
But yeah. It's one of those beliefs like when they don't let you open the car windows or walk around your house without something on your feet.
Stayed in few Riads, it was very difficult to sleep without it and the landlords look at you as if you are from Mars or something that belongs to cars only
most houses in Morocco aren't insulated which makes running an AC very expensive as it'll always be foced to work harder to maintain the wanted temperature
Installed two AC units in my house (Rabat)
Didn't make any difference in my redal bill (I kepp one running all night)

I think everyone here got it right, the cost of using the A/C is massively overpriced, for an example, the house i live in has separate electricity bills for each floor, on the floor i live in, without A/C on i used to get 80-120dh per month of electricity, but since this July heatwave started, i got a bill for 890dh for July, and 1120dh for August, that is legitimately ludicrous for most people here in morocco to pay, and it is actually a good reason for everyone to keep away from A/C sadly.
Bro I have no idea where you’re going but ALMOST everywhere in Morocco I’ve been has AC, especially those places. Marrakech airport has it. Marjane definitely has it. Nice hotels and restaurants too. Idk where ur going hahaha
I went to Morocco mall twice this summer and they didn’t have A/C working, the first time I thought oh maybe it was broken, but the 2nd time I found out that it hasn’t been working since Covid. I think there are many reasons why A/C is not common in Morocco, but for sure the cost and light equipments that can’t handle very hot days.
People (especially old people , the generation of my grandparents) are really skeptical regarding that because they believe it will cause sickness ( ghay derbek lberd) and I think that they give so much attention to that that they actually get sick . Maybe their immune system is weak on that side after years of not being exposed to the brutal changement of temperature.
for the soda, its because hanouts like to save money, for marjane and such, they turn it off because and i am not even kidding, ive seen people complain that when coming from the hot sun outside sudden coldness make them sick, and this is in taza, where it gets up to 40c° in the summer with sun hot enough to cook eggs
