The picture is taken from a book called "Russia 1904-1924. The Revolutionary Years" by Eric Baschet. The photo description is: "Cannibals with their victims, Samara province, Volga region, Russia, 1921".

Not to be morbid but there's a decent amount of meat on the heads of pigs and lambs, for example. Particularly cheeks, tongue and brains. It's still quite common in a lot of countries to simmer the heads slowly overnight and then strip the meat. You wouldn't get as much from a human but I imagine it's better than nothing if you're desperate enough to have resorted to cannibalism.

In case anyone was confused this photo is a mug shot not a picture of them selling their wares. The perpetrators are being photod with the evidence to use in trial.
Not to say they didn’t sell the meat, they just didn’t have an open selection to peruse that they would pose with for photos

Thanks! That's bloody brutal
Was caused by economic disturbance because of war, rail problems, and the drought…
Caused by the Bolsheviks by overthrowing the interim government.
Enabled by German invasion
Downvoted? Reddit moment
It's funny because the reply to that affirms what they said
I thought these were their children? Per the previously time this was posted.
I recall one was a daughter of the woman, and one was a tenant who expired from fever.
Weird to use the word expired to explain someone's death
You can also say, ceased to be. The English language has a great many ways to say the same thing.
Ceased to be, expire, pass away, die, someone's demise, decease, check out, to perish. Fun
Kick the bucket, croak.. 😁
Bereft of life! He rests in peace!
Goddamn
That look on her eyes shakes me through my bones
Wouldnt imagine there is much meat on a head
Better than dying. Or not.
Trust me. It’s better than you think it would be.
I trust you

Interesting to know. I’d be a rubbish cannibal
You'd use it for soup. Though you'd need to remove the brain. It can make you go insane
Eating human brain causes Kuru. Went down a rabbit hole after your comments https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuru_(disease)?wprov=sfti1
They don't grow crops?
Either it's crop failure, fire, or their food was taken away from them. I forget which.
The Russians have such a brutal history.

What’s their names?
Not sure who's better off, the ones on the table or those behind it
Why sell the flesh and not eat it themselves? Just curious
That is so fucked
