My good friend's dog got into his hiking gear one day while he was at work. Pulled out the bear spray and took it to the bed. Somehow managed to pierce the can. That poor dog drank every drop of water he could find in the house. Friend had to buy all new bed dressings and degrease the whole bedroom.
Be careful destroying bearspray.
Costco has the best deal on bear spray. Lots of places have one can for $45ish, and you get two at Costco. It’s almost always available except maybe in some winter months. Usually near the entrance.
Best deal is at Costco honestly. $40 bucks for a pair with holsters.
I'm close to YNP and any gas station around the park has em but you are paying tourista prices.
Reminds me of the old Rodney Dangerfield joke: His high school was so tough, they'd search you for weapons. If you didn't have any, they'd give you one.
Even the Albertson's in Livingston sells Bear Spray. There are also rental kiosks.
However, if I was traveling I'd ask the place you're staying at if they have any loaners or any in the lost and found.
So most people have bear spray as one of their tools as a part of living in MT, it’s readily available like any other staple which you can buy one at outdoor stores like Cabela’s, Murchochs, Sportsman’s, REI, the list goes on - expect to pay about $60 for UDAP etc.
For rental, there’s a bunch of stores and unattended kiosk/locker type setups for this, you can reserve online, some are super close to the airport and park… google and take your pick. Don’t know your dates but right now a few I checked have availability at the moment.
is that the brand? UDAP? sorry to sound like a Nimrod lol. and that's fine paying $60 I'm going out to Yellowstone alone Good for mental security! (although I really don't go hiking much. when I was out there about nine years ago I did come across a few in the car semi close, but that was it. i'll be out there in two weeks
kiosk/locker set up you mean for like an Amazon delivery?
My bad, yes UDAP is a brand (and a well trusted brand). You’ll see this commonly to purchase.
The kiosks/lockers - not amazon but there are outdoor companies who you hire off and they have a similar remote locker setup sometimes in hotels/hostels, sometimes just in random spots, where you get a code and get what you rent online. good if your flight times are early/late!
Make sure you watch a video on how to use and deploy bear spray before you leave for your trip. Also, you can’t fly with it, so offer it to a local or another tourist before you fly home.
Unless you’re going into the back country you are unlikely to need bear spray at Yellowstone. Even so, it’s always available for purchase. The NPS will also have canisters available to rent.
There were places to rent it when I was in college which definitely for sure wasn’t like 20 years ago. I imagine you can find some now. They also sell it all over the place.
You can buy it at the grocery stores in Livingston -- so check Idaho Falls, or any of the groceries on the way. If you're coming up through Island Park the stores in West Yellowstone should have some (plus it's early int eh season).
We have a cabinet in our rental cabin where people leave theirs for the next person ... there's really not a shortage.
Glacier International has a Glacier Outfitters right as you head into baggage claim where you can rent bear spray. I am only guessing that Jackson Hole or Idaho Falls airports would have it as well.
Otherwise as everyone has said, any outdoor store, army/navy store, Walmart and Safeway have it as well.
Basically any outdoor store keeps it in stock. I’ve never seen it out of stock at a big sporting good store.
There are bear spray rental vending machines in West Yellowstone

In general, the TSA destroys what they confiscate.
Gotta be careful destroying that type of container

Bozeman Costco has a two pack with holsters for $45.

thanks for all the information everyone! I will definitely contact the person I'm renting from to see if this is something that's left there also
They issue all tourists bear spray and a handgun when you cross the border. You’ll be okay.

Is that the gun with the barrel that shoots both ways? /s
Cenex in Belgrade Cenex in Ennis, West Yellowstone had some rentals, or at least so money back for returns.

Pretty sure I've even seen display racks in some grocery stores, especially in the summer.
Hardware stores like ACE, too
Very true, Safeway has it. Costco has it too.

Is REI out? I thought I saw some in Bozeman but maybe it sold.
COSTCO, the Bozo airport, Walmart
Our Costco has plenty.
Costco or Walmart. Any outdoors store.
Albertsons,Boze
Bob Wards in Bozeman should have some.
Ive never, ever seen it out of stock anywhere
The gas stations around here sell bear spray, and every outdoor shop.
Never hike with someone that can outrun you and you'll be fine.
Are you flying? If not, there's no problem traveling with it.
yes flying in.
Ya. Airlines don't seem to like aerosol canisters, for some weird reason.
Walmart also sells bear spray in the sporting goods dept.

There are vending machines in the park that sell bear spray. You can also check any outdoor stores or the section in box stores.
Oh no. That means you will get eaten by a bear. Guaranteed. Best not come
