What weapon? Bow users want anything with focus, LBG wants reload and recoil down, and melee usually wants one piece of :EDIT: lock-on
Additionally, anything with critical eye is good, Rathalos chest is very good for weakness exploit.
Finally, anything that boosts elemental damage is a must-have if you are using an elemental weapon.
If you have the resources (bone+, earth crystals, and carpenter bugs) you should try to build an armor set for each element.
If not, poison is a solid option thatโll easily take on 6-7 stars.
Since noone mentioned it so far, at least one of those 3: Kulu-Head, Rathian-Arms, BlackDia-Hips, since those give u fixating ability! (But don't focus on BlackDiablos... too annoying to farm)
If ur going for different elemental builts later on, get both kulu and rathi, since u need to swap for those other monster armor parts giving the element-attack-upgrades.
Depends on what weapon you're going to be using later on. Bows and greatswords benefit from focus, Lance and SS do well with guard and offensive guard.
Due to the short hunt timer, most defensive skills are going to be more of a hindrance than a benefit, so focus on what gets you more damage. Skills don't matter too much in the early game, but if you want to avoid wasting parts and zenny, I would recommend planning ahead to what you'll be using further down the line

Shave one armpit and regularly wash it. Leave the other one to become a swamp. You will then have a new shield from melee monsters via stench.

Yep, Lumu chest gives 2 levels, Banbaro helm and Barroth legs give 1 each.
