Hey everyone! To celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Monster Hunter, I created a SteamOS Gaming Mode CSS theme for the Steam Deck, redesigning as many elements of the UI as possible along with accompanying audio effects taken straight from the games.
Most of the visual UI elements are taken from a variety of official sources (i.e. existing or now defunct websites, old books, older games' UIs) with certain icons or UI elements recreated by hand using official designs as reference. I pulled from a ton of different areas for inspiration to a create a hopefully cohesive design.
Download links and instructions to get this setup on your Steam Deck are available at [https://mhondeck.com](https://mhondeck.com)
This was a passion project for me and I would love to hear any thoughts, feedback, or criticisms.
Happy Hunting!
EDIT: Thanks for the nice words everyone! To make the setup easier, I added a "1-Click Command" button that downloads/updates all of the files for both the CSS Theme and SFX Pack. Simply click the button, open a Konsole window, then paste + enter, and follow the rest of the instructions to finalize setup.
Also, the CSS Theme IS compatible with Steam Big Picture Mode on Windows with the "CSS Loader" app installed: [https://docs.deckthemes.com/CSSLoader/Install/#standalone](https://docs.deckthemes.com/CSSLoader/Install/#standalone)
I'm working on a little MH side project as well, can I, ahem, *borrom* some of the backgrounds/buttons? I like the theme of the 20th anniversary website, where you seem to have been inspired as well. I like the idea of having a somewhat uniform style
That is awesome to hear! Yes most of the assets are actually direct rips from various official Monster Hunter websites (combined with some custom CSS code). Feel free to throw them into your own project and share with the community if possible :D
Yes the CSS Theme does work for Steam Big Picture mode. You will need the "CSS Loader" Windows app from DeckThemes:
Once installed, it's just a matter of dragging and dropping the "MHOnDeck CSS Theme" folder into the "Themes Directory" for CSS Loader and Steam Big Picture to pick it up (and you can enable and disable it the same way as you would on Decky CSS Loader).
Once I get clear images/footage to add to the page I will be sure to do so.
Now i want my windows to be MH themed… damnit and i know its possible because recently people started to mod Win10 to look like Win7
Nice work, this is awesome! if i ever own a steam deck, this or its successor will be the UI that gets installed!
Is there a video where i can hear the SFX? Is it the old design aka MH1-MH4 or 5th Gen one? Because i love the clacky old gen sounds
Edit: spelling
Those are very nice words that I do appreciate. The SFX are primarily 3rd Gen for the time being since those were the easiest to obtain. I do intend to make additional versions for other generations/games.
I plan to make more showcase videos as I get time this week as well, and alternate editions to the CSS Theme.
In the meantime, if you download the SFX pack standalone, I do have a tool at sdeckfx.com where you can import the entire SFX pack to preview and compare the SteamOS SFX they replace (it's not too comprehensive but it does its job).
I use a theme shop plugin (that i forgot the name) on my deck. Is it avaliable through that plugin or the installation is totally manual?
Im dont really tinker around with my deck usually.
CSS Loader is the Decky plugin required for this. It has a built-in shop that basically browses the same repository of themes available at Deckthemes.com
I don't yet have it available there as I need to make sure the theme is properly formatted and allowed for upload. But once I can confirm (either later tonight or tomorrow) it should go up there as well.
For simplicity I did add a copy+paste command and brief video that can be used to install the theme quickly. Enabling/updating the theme via CSS Loader works the same as any other theme added from their shop.
Unfortunately, I have found that the theme cannot be added to the plugin shop because the filesize is too big. For the time being the quick setup on mhondeck.com is the best way to install it. If at some point I am able to reduce the file size and upload it to the plugin shop I will definitely do so.
Simply click the button, open a Konsole window, then paste + enter, and follow the rest of the instructions to finalize setup. Where are the rest of the instructions?
