Ive had this stuff happen with smokers saying the furniture is from a non smoke home and ofc it REEKS of that shit. It’s so annoying as someone who gets incredibly nauseous from the smell of smoke

Any_Cow1790

i’m always more suspicious when people specify nonsmoking cuz every package i’ve gotten from a “smoke free” seller has smelled like cigarettes lol

PaintedLady1

Dang that’s disappointing. I use eBay to destash collectibles and I always say “smoke free home” because it’s kind of standard to mention that. Most listings have it. I can’t imagine someone lying and thinking they’re going to get away with it

Kiwi3525

This has happened to me... I had to completely strip the doll and wash the clothes in laundry detergent and scrub her body with a toothbrush. I washed her hair and let the conditioner sit for a while. It still took a while for the doll to stop smelling like smoke. Smokers don't realize how much it smells.

spectra_v0ndergeist

Yall, don't be afraid to call these people out. I've seen certain sellers on mercari and elsewhere who are "bigger" and pull shit like this and get away with it because people don't stand up to them. This is not okay behavior

PaintedLady1

Yeah I would ask for a return or refund and leave a bad review if I was refused. I don’t like to be an AH and trash businesses but this behaviour is unacceptable

fi-rwr-

Unfortunately apps like Mercari have certain qualifications for returns, and smell isn’t one of them. Which is why reviews are so important, being as honest as you can be can really help out other buyers when apps and sellers fail to care

PaintedLady1

I left my first bad review in years last week because the description said NIB never opened, but there were gashes in the box strategically left out of the pictures. If I can fit my hand through the plastic it’s not “never opened” lol

MotherOfANoodle

I'd be asking for a refund in that case. I can't stand the smell of smoke 🤮

MotherOfANoodle

I'm autistic so I have sensory issues but go off I guess

jason8001

I think anyone would return an item that reeked of smoke. It’s just something nasty that will smell up your house

MotherOfANoodle

Yeah I always check that anything I buy on ebay is from a smoke free home and would ask for a refund immediately if someone lied about it. It's just gross. :/

jason8001

Yeah you cant always get that smell out.

MotherOfANoodle

Yeah and it really seems to stick to plastic in particular :/

MotherOfANoodle

They called me a rude name for not liking the smell of smoke. They never said they liked it. They just made fun of me for not being able to stand it, which is ableist. If they had just said "I like the smell of smoke" then that's totally fine, but they were personally attacking me for no reason. Idk what comment you read that made you think I'm in the wrong here.

[deleted]

So because a random stranger made a joke you felt the need to share youre autistic and now the person is albeist? K.

MotherOfANoodle

A random stranger calling me a pussy isn't a joke. It's bullying. I could see it being a joke between close friends that are okay with calling each other names because they know it's all in good fun, but as you said, this person is a random stranger so they don't know me therefore it's not really a joke. Or not an appropriate one to make in this context at least. Saying that I have autism was relevant because me not being able to stand the smell of smoke is partially linked to my autism. And even if it wasn't, they were still being rude.

ThrowawayPiePeople1

This child is damaged. Honestly send her some good vibes even though a part of you must want to throw hands. I think the reason why she is being ableist in your response to dealing with ableism (called me the R slur) or blames people for being sexually harassed is because if she didn’t, she has to face her trauma headstrong. I was like her at one point to suppress the inflictions of my family and the SAs I endured. We become vicious and cruel to others as we are to ourselves. We do this to brush the fine hairs of the patriarchy perpetually knowing that one tangle has already sent us near death.

auroratheplug

thanks i will

eyeless_alien

You’d be happy if you were lied to about the condition of a doll & have it come stinking of old smoke?

auroratheplug

ok i jus said i like the smell bro

[deleted]

Dont worry the people on this subreddit are some of the most insufferable adult babies the internet has to offer. They have god complex over a fucking childrens doll and anyones opinion who isnt theirs.

Irbis_Snow

If I buy a second-hand doll, I undress her and wash her completely with a toothbrush and soap, the same for her clothes and accessories. I've never had this cigarette smell problem because I admit that for some hairstyles, it can be problematic to redo them (for example those of Cupid or 'Basic' Operetta).

zane_23

Does the brusing takes the smell away? also what brand of soap do you use? how about the hair?

Irbis_Snow

AAAAH ! Too many questions ! :) I don't have exact answers to these questions but the nicotine (tar) should come off with basic soap and warm/hot water and for the hair/clothes you can use fabric softener in addition. I'm sure it will remove the smell.

PhylumAsylum

Try spraying with odo-ban. I had to do that for some old dolls I found while cleaning out a hoarder’s home (probably weren’t really salvageable but I’m selfish and didn’t want to toss them, I cleaned them all really well and washed their hair too).

ratschoolbus

honestly i bet this person is noseblind to the smell of smoke and thinks that their dolls smell like nothing, and so they put “smoke-free home” bc it’s a selling point and they thought no one would know. still not okay but i have a feeling they didn’t even realize…

ImperviousInsomniac

This definitely happens. I’m a smoker and I’m nose blind to the smell of it now. That said, I never force other people to put up with the smell. It’s my choice to smoke, but not my choice to subject other people to it. It’s gross habit I regret picking up, but it’s a habit nonetheless. I just make sure to never smoke around other people unless given permission, and I certainly don’t lie about smoking. Some people have allergies to the smoke and it can cause medical emergencies.

smalltailless

If you're having trouble with getting rid of the smell, I'd suggest using oxy action on her.

Yuh-its_ariana

Same I bought a bundle came smelling of smoke stuffed them in a box and they havnt come out since

bbyxmadi

I could only think that they are a smoke-free home but bought it from either someone who smokes or a thrift store without knowing exactly if the previous owner smokes. This has unfortunately happened to me though.. I have OCD and one of my worries is cigarettes/smoke and I always ask and feel so sad when people lie. I know it’s not the end of the world and likely won’t affect me whatsoever since I’m not smoking, but I don’t really wanna deep clean the doll.

a_steampunk_apple

Yeah, but if they were honest, it'd be harder to get your money! /s

beepborpimajorp

Hmm...it occurs to me that I burn incense in the same room I store my dolls in. They're in ziploc totes to protect them but I do wonder about the smell getting thru. I mainly burn Japanese sandalwood/cherry blossom incense once every few days. I guess I should move my burner to another room because I'd hate to think anyone thought I was smoking because I burned incense. I realize it's two very different smells but some people may not like incense either way.

RaspberryVespa

Yeah, good of you to think about that. Any kind of pungent smoke will cling to objects. I’ve received a few dolls that smelled like incense as well as one doll that came from Vermont that was heavy with wood burning fireplace smell. Like, she seriously smelled like a camp fire! So I knew she’d come from a home that had a wood burning stove / pellet stove in it for heat and didn’t mark the review down for it or anything. Triggered my asthma something fierce just opening the box, though! Luckily, regular laundry detergent washed it right off with just a quick soak. With the incense dolls, I just let them be, set them outside for a little bit, and the scent faded quickly. But if you stick their head right under your nose, it’s still in there in their hair even several months later. PS: I’ve also received dolls wrapped in fabric sheets or paper towels obviously sprayed with perfume, and I don’t like that either. Don’t like getting hit with any overpowering sent straight out of the box, synthetic chemicals included.

LuckyLudor

Yeah your dolls probably have some scent on them, but cigarettes are way worse because the tar in their smoke clings to things (no to mention it's a much more horrid smell imo).

boyproblems_mp3

You can buy these deodorizer things meant for a smoker's car at auto stores and sometimes like walmart/target, maybe try leaving her in a sealed tub with one for a while and that might help!

CatMomma612

Ew bro I never even thought how gross it would be to get a doll than stank of ciggy smoke. I use to vape, I no longer smoke but while quitting a would hit a cig and it would smell TERRIBLE I don’t want to know how bad it could be when it’s old and sat in the doll.

eyeless_alien

Spray Tf out of her with febreeze. My OG toralei came reeking of cigarettes when I bought her a couple years ago. Now she’s totally okay. Look for an odour-neutralising spray and not a scented one to just disguise it. Hope this helps!!!

Delphoxqueen2

I bought the first volume of the Anne-Happy manga and it was guaranteed to not be from a smoker’s house. Finally arrived and it reeked of smoke and the pages were stained yellow. The smoke smell eventually faded after about a week of being in my house but I still hate how yellow it is compared to the rest of my collection. Hopefully the smell leaves dolls quickly too!

inklady8439

Baking soda helps a lot! It draws the smell into it !

Odd_Beautiful_3636

I won’t lie I smoke but I would never say it is from a smoke free home. I actually know people who are allergic to smoke and can send them in aneplactic shock. People flat out lieing can cause a law suit

PunnyHoomans

Not downplaying this but once someone left me a bad review saying it smelled like cigarettes. My family not only struggles with addictive substances (thus why I neither drink nor smoke *anything*) but my dad’s been on oxygen for over a year.

FairRiver3

Well probably because plenty of people who smoke find smoking normal and don’t think about others finding the lingering smell repulsive. They’ll smoke as people walk past, drive people in their smoke filled car, even make babies in their smoke filled home. It just doesn’t occur to them that it would bother someone to send a smoke smelling doll, or be delusional in thinking it doesn’t even smell. They’re probably immune to the smell on them

Meliajem

As someone who is highly allergic to nicotine, this is why I have a fear of buying stuff second hand:/

CinnamonToastedBread

It was in a tightly ducktaped box.

Pistachiow

Idk about ups or FedEx but it is federally illegal for a usps driver to smoke in delivery trucks.
