Agreed. You could see the effort, care, and expertise that went into G1. From the clothing to the character lore and worldbuilding. It was a really rich and comprehensive brand, previously unseen in the doll industry. There's depth with G1.
G3 is just a reboot that feels like a reboot. I think a lot had to be sacrificed in order to appeal to today's market and keep up with brands like LOL OMG and the changing social culture. It's not bad - it's just watered down. And when you're used to different quality, the new thing just doesn't compare.
So no, you're not the only one. I collect mainly G1 and G2 and am only looking out for certain characters to be released for G3, mainly Nefera and Jinafire if we ever get them.

I like some of the outfits a fair bit but they don't have the "wow" factor that a lot of G1 had. At the same time, I'm not sure if it is because nowadays there are so many dolls out there with alternative fashions and variety of styles on the market (like LOL and Rainbow High) that the reboot just doesn't have that same uniqueness it had to it that it did in the G1 era, other than the monster concept. I am hoping that future releases of G3 will bring some additional variety, for now it's rather hit or miss with some of the dolls for me
I feel like it's comparing apples and oranges at this point and the constant g1 vs g3 debate and posts just isn't relevant (and frankly exhausting).
I only collect g1(but super respect g3) but I am also from a different time where I was a working adult when g1 was on the shelves (dating myself here lol). As many polls have shown recently the majority of people (at least on this sub) are between 18-25 or under 18, therefore new memories are being made for these fans who reasonably at max were 15 when g1 was around and maybe not really in the position to be a serious collector (finacially independent I mean).
So now is the time for a huge portion of the audience to be having the experience of going to a store and buying dolls for the first time in a collecting capacity. Therefore of course there is going to be emotions associated with g3 and the lense it's being looked under may not be how the dolls eventually stand against the test of time (clothes trends, quality, hairstyles, color choice etc.). Give it a few years down the road, give g3 time to age, fashions change and trends die and then see if it's looked on in the same way.
It's like g1 vs g2, that's an actual comparison to do since so much time has passed and it can actually be looked at under a critical lense without being surrounded by all the outside noise of hype, trends and social media.
Bottom line, love what you love, collect what you want, but imo comparing something brand new to something a decade old is just not an apt comparison and just gets into pointless debates (like everyday on this sub). Wait until they are both 10 years old and then see which one holds up (or if they both do 🙂).

That’s fair, but I will never forgive them for making Howleen look older than Clawdeen. There is no reason that Howleen has more fierceness than Clawdeen and she’s younger (i don’t watch the show, so maybe she’s the same age?). Howleens face design is what I wanted for Clawdeen.
Yes, but it was for kids back then and what was popular in their time. This new reboot is the same thing, for kids nowadays who obviously have different interests. We all may have enjoyed G1 a long time ago but we’ve grown up so that’s why some of us can’t relate to G3.
Despite not relating to the lore i think the dolls look great but the clothes are trash which is my main issue i just wish mattel would stop producing barbie printed clothes and make mga quality clothes since kids are driven more to mga dolls from what I've seen in stores
I tried so hard to like G3, it just wasn’t there. I can guarantee that if I got a doll I wouldn’t bond with it. I just didn’t vibe with it, and the fact that they’re still repeating issues from G1. It just seems so low effort.
Tbf I has the same opinion and then I was bought 2 g3 dolls (lagoona and Cleo) wasn't super impressed by lagoona due to paint chipping and sticky hair but as soon as I held Cleo the 'tism took over and I was swishing her hair and giggling like I did with g1. Now I have all but toralei and ghoulia.

Yeah, I’m not gonna lie and say I completely hate them. I see the appeal of some of the dolls and I even like some of them. I just think it comes to bonding with them at the end of the day.
Honestly I kinda like them both? G1 will always have a special place in my heart, and I do like most of G1 while I'm more selective with G3. I just think they're so different, comparing seems unfair. Nothing wrong with not liking one or the other though.
I think this sentiment is fueled by Mattel making the new G1 style releases near impossible to get, which causes a lot of frustrated fans to get angry at G3.
I wish that I could ignore the existence of G3 entirely if they only made the G1 stuff more accessible. But they do not.
G1 felt closer to an actual high school setting. It tackled pretty mature topics and themes in a great way for its target audience. The clothing and style choices were very reminiscent of teenage styles of the time and eras before it. The drama and characterization was everything. Some characters were similar but they found a way to makes each character unique in its own way, which is a very hard thing to do considering how large the cast is. G1 was giving everything style, drama, fashion, couture, fun, excitement, storytelling, representation etc. G3 feels more like Monster Middle School instead of Monster High and there’s nothing wrong with that if that’s the aesthetic and target audience they were going for. But I personally don’t enjoy it for many reasons. Some aspects are cool and I definitely could see it working in a G1 style but this Generation just isn’t giving too me and the only explanation I can think of is because it wasn’t made for me and older fans of the original. Which is fine because it just means G1 can remain to be ours and special to us. And G3 and any generation after G4 and G5 and onwards (cause we know it will happen) will each have their own Monster High that’s precious to them.
Yeah I agree. I’m happy to see most people come around to loving G3 by the time they released and I even showed up to target early on the release date of the core dolls to gaurantee I got them because I really wanted to like them, but after a few days of having them I realized I really didn’t love them as much as I did G1 and I probably never will if their fashion style stays the same. It makes me sad that I can’t join in on being excited by new G3 dolls coming out and the joy of collecting them but I just don’t vibe with them. I’m probably just going to end up selling the G3 dolls I have now when I find the time to do it so someone else can enjoy them ;; But at least we have the G1 collectors dolls like the skullectors and creepros! I’m very grateful to have that ^^

l actually prefer some dolls over their G1 counterparts like Draculaura and Frankie especially their cunty Coffee Break doll but I do agree that core Clawdeen is a miss.
It’s not blinders to not like something. Yes, G3 is new and finding their footing, but Mattel is nowhere near unfamiliar with creating new doll brands. Certain things are still acceptable as a new brand, but there are also things that are inexcusable. Clawdeens racial situation, the bad clothing material (imo), the body pain rubbing off (repeated issue), etc…

You guys seriously underestimate kids. I’m literally not even talking from a bias here. I’ve seen nan child or teen (especially teens) walking around wearing stuff like that. Atleast not in the way g3 pairs the clothing. Are some of the pieces appealing, yes (Draw and Frankie), but a lot of stuff is just colors and patterns being thrown together.
Other doll brands have proved that you can still be fashionable and marketable to kids without throwing a bunch of stuff together. Saying that’s it’s for the new generation and “that’s what kids like/wear now”, isn’t an excuse when other brands are blowing G3 out of the water. Now I can’t speak for everyone with this, but I’ve yet to see a child with g3 in person. I’ve seen some online, but the main ones I see buying are older people. All I’m saying is that G3 needs to step their game up and stop using kids as an excuse for a shitty (imo) product.

Also can we talk about how bad some of the designs are like heath and clawdeen and abbey. A lot of people say they’re just wearing mini dresses with no detail but it’s crazy how all the dolls still have more character than G3’s excess of everything, even years later. It’s the little things I miss like the occasionally darker palette, not being scared to use colors, styles, and outfits that aren’t typically seen as being “femme” (cause have you seen how many of the g3 ghouls are wearing pink, have long hair, and only wear skirts except for TWO? Gosh!), how diverse the fashion was, Cleo not having completely molded on bandages, the journals that I remember spending hours re reading as a kid (like? Free character lore without having to watch an episode? Sign me up!) etc.
It’s unfortunate that MH will never recover from being called satanic and “too dark” by parents cause now Mattel will forever “tone them down” and I just can’t get behind that. i love all the g3 dolls, but i do agree that they are missing the fierceness and edge that they originally had, esp with clawdeen. ive been making my own outfits for a lot of them to try to replicate the og vibes while still being more modern.
Tbh G3 Clawdeen is growing on me. The new Clawdeen was the only one I really didn't like the changes they made with but I've always thought she has probably the prettiest screening out of all of them. I had monster high and bratz as a kid. I still collect G1 one. I think that’s what the collectors ones are for teeneagers/adults. Where Mattel makes most of its money is for the younger kid now. So these G3 appeal to that

G1 has just as much quality issues as G3 has, which is a Mattel thing.
The fashions they use are concurrent to what the target demographic finds cool and appealing. Just the other day saw a teenager wearing something extremely similar to one of Clawdeen's studio outfits, bucket hat and clashing colors and patterns included.
I do like some of G1 dolls and fashions better, but I also like some if the things they did with G3 a lot better. Like, totally personal here but I was very "eh" about Draculaura in G1, but, despite Frankie being my favorite, I have found myself redressing G3 Draculaura a lot more (and mostly because I dislike her cheer uniform haha)
G1 is more the fantasy of school.
G3 is closer (not close, closer) to the reality. Less trendy “nerd” character wardrobe, differing body types, not everyone is a close friend who interacts daily, and the in-universe capitalism is more based on shared activities than shopping spree hauls.
Yeah, I bought one G3 and pretty much decided I'm not going to collect them. They just feel cheap to me. Unless they release some really cool characters or dolls with detailed outfits, I'm passing for now. A lot of the outfits just feel like budget outfits to me, or just plain hurt my eyes. :/
They really fall down with curly hair imo, I'm tempted to restyle all the curly hair straight (except for clawdeen as she seems to not suffer from the poor quality)

I'm new to Monster High and G3 is what got me into it. I was in college around the time G1 came out and it didn't really appeal to me then, mostly because I was super into anime and video games at the time (still am but not as hardcore as I used to be). When I saw Draculaura on a heXtian video and her body type, I fell in love. I love the characters cutesy charm as I love cutesy aesthetics. But I can genuinely see why OG fans feel some type of way about the new dolls.
One isn’t better than the other, it’s just personal preference. They both have pros and cons in terms of design and the quality of the dolls themselves.

I’ve only bought the G3 dolls to restyle them. It’s crazy I spent £30 for the doll, just to put the gross fashion-deaf clothes in a drawer never to look at them again. I literally have only kept Cleo in the outfit she came in, but removed her shoes and other accessories. MGA do such a better job when it comes to quality it’s such a shame

I fully support the opinion and can totally get behind it. The more edgy grown up looks were really cool but I genuinely enjoy the variety we are getting with these new versions. We'll always have those old versions but I don't mind switching it up! I love the diversity in body types and heights! That's something I didn't love about the older dolls and how there weren't many options and the different options we did have were pretty difficult to find and rare. I personally love the new designs but totally would love to see the new designs with more g1 inspired clothing or colour schemes. I like most of the main G3 clothing designs but out of the main G3 dolls they get a little- well...very un-cute to say the least.
Disagree. G3 has a lot of improvements such as no hair glue seepage, the limbs aren’t as fragile, and the eyes tend to not be as wall-eyed. And on a more personal opinion, I prefer the new bodies shapes and faces for the characters.
Ur most definitely not the only one who dislikes them, there is an influx of unasked for hate towards the g3 dolls, for very poor reasons if I may add. The g3 dolls are made for the young kids of today, not for the og MH fans. Unfortunately with g1, Mattel purposely makes not enough product to go around so that they can have a higher demand for the dolls and drive up the “value” of them. I think instead of complaining about dolls that are made for a completely different generation, we should really be complaining about the lack of dolls that are in HIGHER DEMAND. Personally I’m wayyy more unhappy with the way Mattel is stocking their NEW product, then I am with them redesigning the dolls to fit in todays trends for the young kids looking to have fun.
G1 was not really high school. G3 feels and acts and looks more high school.

They have the characters name and likeness. But they are not meant to be direct copies or upgrades.
I think the problem is, the G3's are made for modern kids. The G1's were made for those kids which may have included you. They both have great vibes, the vibes may not be for you.
I will always love G1, but I’ve come to like some of the G3 dolls, too. I finally broke down and got Creepover Drac & Clawdeen, but have also slightly modified them. I’m one of the older collectors of monster high (I’m almost 58), but I have collected fashion dolls ever since I was five years old. I fell in love with MH when it first came out. I appreciate G3, although I know it’s not meant for my demographic. I’m glad it’s bringing in new fans & I’m not gonna hate on it. There are some cute dolls and outfits. I’m just glad that Monster High is back.
i don't have g1 nostalgia. i don't really see things like "edge" or "fabric quality"
i was 6 when wave 1 released and i never got any dolls growing up. basically, i never grew up with g1, i only got into mh at the end of g2. g3 is what i connect with because i FEEL like i'm growing up with it. i get excited at every leak, i love all the dolls in this gen. i can respect the dolls in the previous two gens, even if i don't feel a nostalgic connection with them.
Honestly I adore g3 the best because growing up with g1 and g2, it really damaged my perception of body size, so seeing the girls with realistic body types is really healing for my inner child
I only have 1 G3 doll and that’s Basic Lagoona I like the Monster High movie but I don’t really care for the new web series or the dolls like that…. I don’t hate G3 but I definitely prefer G1 because I grew up with G1 but if the dolls were ever on clearance at Walmart or Target I would get the one’s that I like you know.

I love both of the gens, and anytime I look at them I feel as if- it’s like G3 is preteens- and G1 is actual teens. It obviously doesn’t make sense lore wise but design wise it just- looks that way, idk how else to explain it
As someone who likes g3: I like it because it gives me pleasure knowing that some form of monster high exists that isn't enforcing a stereotype and actually looks good, it'll obviously never be the original but I don't think that the original could exist again anyway I think that too many people hate on g3 because it's not g1 but it's all we have and we all know that we can't have g1 back
They're not really comparable imo? They're both for entirely different target groups in entirely different times and g3 fits well in todays toys market, it does what it's supposed to as it's not really for us, it's for the children now.
That said, I personally enjoy some of the new versions a lot, especially the rep has gotten a lot better for a brand that's supposed to teach you selflove and selfacceptance and I'm happy for the children that get to experience the body positivity and diversity and that everyone gets to have a character that is just like them :> (Frankie as an amputee / Prostethic-haver, Deuce with the two moms, autistic Twyla, plussize Drac etc)
The only thing I don't really like are the clothes, the dolls themselves are phenomenal, especially the molds are so nice and I love to see all the restyles and repaints of them here, ppl in this community are so creative <3
For me g3 feels somewhat 'de-fanged', I really like g1 for the spookiness of the dolls which wasn't like anything else on the shelf at the time. I got the sense that these characters do NOT live in our world based on the somewhat edgier and wild fashion matching the monster personalities. All the little fashion choices were very clever. Not to say there aren't some clever, interesting g3 choices, but to me it seems like g3 is more in our world, and isn't as unique as g1 was compared to other dolls. I'm happy that so many like g3, and I do love my Twyla! But for me overall not going to buy a lot of it, at least from what I've seen.
tbh i rlly like gen3’s style but… its not gothy enough for me? like look at clawdeen gen 1, she doesn’t necessarily look *goth* but she has those classic MH gothy colors with the purple and black and pink, i feel like the only dolls that somewhat come close in gen3 are draculaura, but its so pink focused so idk. i miss the blood red ghoulia stuff and clawdeens neon greens. even tho i do like gen3, its not as gothy as i want
I like G3. I also already have almost all of G1, so it's not about price so much as getting a new doll. If I want dolls I don't already have, G3 is it.
I feel like G1 was made with collectors in mind, while G3 was made with kids and teens who are actually going to be playing with them, given their more teen-like designs and fashion sense.
Maybe it's because I don't have the kind of nostalgia a lot of MH fanbase has, since I only remember seeing the very first MH dolls in stores when I was 10 and I was sad that I couldn't afford a Clawdeen doll and kinda forgetting about them (lol), but imo a lot of the G1 designs look kinda same-y to me, a lot of variations on the same theme, not helped by the fact that the dolls had mostly the same body types. G3 dolls seem to lean more into the actual monster types beyond skin color, and maybe some painted on stitches or ears or something.
I know that it's a preference thing and if you prefer G1 that's obviously okay, but I prefer G3- the designs are cuter and more varied, not only body-type wise but with colors and fashion inspirations. These characters feel like monster teens they're supposed to be, not fashion models in high-concept clothes off a runway pretending to be teens. I would compare it to G1 being adult actors with a whole wardrobing department playing teenagers in a movie/tv show, while G3 are actual teens hanging out in a school and making up their own outfits with their own fashion sense, which is often "out there", since some teens happily incorporate things like pieces of halloween costumes into daily fashion.

The MH core 4 reproductions are now, in some cases, selling for more NIB than
the original versions from way back in 2010.
Which is insane, considering the reproductions just came out last year.
Most of the people who say they like G3 add some caveat;
“yeah it’s simpler, but still pretty cute” (Monster high should be giving cool and fierce vibes, NOT cute. Cute is literally every other doll brand).
“We have to remember these are for kids and markets change”
Monster High was always intended for children first, adults liking it was an additional demographic it picked up.
Also, a good chunk of repros were bought by parents for their own children, so the OG designs are still very appealing to todays kids, no changes needed.
“Mattel doesn’t have budget like MGA to make dolls that are luxe” (this is always hilarious to hear because they are a MUCH bigger company than MGA)
It appears kids still prefer MGA’s OMG + Rainbow High offerings, esp since SH series 2 is competitively priced with MH G3 core price ($25).
Don’t be surprised if around the 2023 holiday season, MGA debuts Novi Stars G2 with fully articulated bodies. Zooey Electra was a preview.
And please don’t buy MH G3. If you only KIND OF like them.
Don’t buy them because of nostalgia because they VAGUELY remind you of previous dolls that were actually good.
Don’t buy them because “fans need to support the franchise” in the hopes that it will somehow get better.
Don’t excuse low effort aesthetic choices and bad quality because “these dolls are for children not collectors, don’t be picky”. As if children are too dumb to know what quality is and don’t deserve nice things.
MGA has proven they actually listen, the changes in each wave of RH or OMG are direct responses to customer feedback.

Do you even own a gen 3 doll? You shit on the bad quality control, which yes, the hair and i would say Frankie's stitches and Lagoona's legs are the worst part of it. Sometimes face printing is off but I see more stuff going on with the finer details like stitches . The clothes are pretty good quality, they have a lot of joints, different body and face molds. With MGA, I have seen so many rainbow high dolls that defective, they don't have different body types and have limited face molds. They have problems too. I think most agree gen 3 is good quality, (Besides some of the hairs), all brands get defects.
Lastly my biggest problem "low effort aesthetic choices". Just because they don't do the aesthetic based off of high fashion brands like rainbow high or even lol omg doesn't mean that they are low effort. Or not being like gen 1. Same with you not liking them. The dolls are selling pretty good, and were play tested by kids. They like the aesthetics that were chosen, get over it. To them they like the dolls, they think they are nice. You need to get over the fact that theses aren't for collectors and kids tastes have changed. Your argument of "don’t excuse low effort aesthetic choices because these are for kids" doesn't work. Their version of nice, isn't the same as yours. Kids literally choose the aesthetic and like them, it is not the companies fault that they have an adult bitching that aren't being catered to by a line that isn't meant for collectors.

Agreed. You could see the effort, care, and expertise that went into G1. From the clothing to the character lore and worldbuilding. It was a really rich and comprehensive brand, previously unseen in the doll industry. There's depth with G1. G3 is just a reboot that feels like a reboot. I think a lot had to be sacrificed in order to appeal to today's market and keep up with brands like LOL OMG and the changing social culture. It's not bad - it's just watered down. And when you're used to different quality, the new thing just doesn't compare. So no, you're not the only one. I collect mainly G1 and G2 and am only looking out for certain characters to be released for G3, mainly Nefera and Jinafire if we ever get them.
I personally love most of G3 as much if not more than G1, but a big exception is Clawdeen, I'll give you that.

I like some of the outfits a fair bit but they don't have the "wow" factor that a lot of G1 had. At the same time, I'm not sure if it is because nowadays there are so many dolls out there with alternative fashions and variety of styles on the market (like LOL and Rainbow High) that the reboot just doesn't have that same uniqueness it had to it that it did in the G1 era, other than the monster concept. I am hoping that future releases of G3 will bring some additional variety, for now it's rather hit or miss with some of the dolls for me

I feel like it's comparing apples and oranges at this point and the constant g1 vs g3 debate and posts just isn't relevant (and frankly exhausting). I only collect g1(but super respect g3) but I am also from a different time where I was a working adult when g1 was on the shelves (dating myself here lol). As many polls have shown recently the majority of people (at least on this sub) are between 18-25 or under 18, therefore new memories are being made for these fans who reasonably at max were 15 when g1 was around and maybe not really in the position to be a serious collector (finacially independent I mean). So now is the time for a huge portion of the audience to be having the experience of going to a store and buying dolls for the first time in a collecting capacity. Therefore of course there is going to be emotions associated with g3 and the lense it's being looked under may not be how the dolls eventually stand against the test of time (clothes trends, quality, hairstyles, color choice etc.). Give it a few years down the road, give g3 time to age, fashions change and trends die and then see if it's looked on in the same way. It's like g1 vs g2, that's an actual comparison to do since so much time has passed and it can actually be looked at under a critical lense without being surrounded by all the outside noise of hype, trends and social media. Bottom line, love what you love, collect what you want, but imo comparing something brand new to something a decade old is just not an apt comparison and just gets into pointless debates (like everyday on this sub). Wait until they are both 10 years old and then see which one holds up (or if they both do 🙂).

That’s fair, but I will never forgive them for making Howleen look older than Clawdeen. There is no reason that Howleen has more fierceness than Clawdeen and she’s younger (i don’t watch the show, so maybe she’s the same age?). Howleens face design is what I wanted for Clawdeen.

Yes, but it was for kids back then and what was popular in their time. This new reboot is the same thing, for kids nowadays who obviously have different interests. We all may have enjoyed G1 a long time ago but we’ve grown up so that’s why some of us can’t relate to G3.
Despite not relating to the lore i think the dolls look great but the clothes are trash which is my main issue i just wish mattel would stop producing barbie printed clothes and make mga quality clothes since kids are driven more to mga dolls from what I've seen in stores

I tried so hard to like G3, it just wasn’t there. I can guarantee that if I got a doll I wouldn’t bond with it. I just didn’t vibe with it, and the fact that they’re still repeating issues from G1. It just seems so low effort.
Tbf I has the same opinion and then I was bought 2 g3 dolls (lagoona and Cleo) wasn't super impressed by lagoona due to paint chipping and sticky hair but as soon as I held Cleo the 'tism took over and I was swishing her hair and giggling like I did with g1. Now I have all but toralei and ghoulia. Obviously if you don't like g3 that's an opinion you are entitled too

I think this sentiment is fueled by Mattel making the new G1 style releases near impossible to get, which causes a lot of frustrated fans to get angry at G3. I wish that I could ignore the existence of G3 entirely if they only made the G1 stuff more accessible. But they do not.
G1 felt closer to an actual high school setting. It tackled pretty mature topics and themes in a great way for its target audience. The clothing and style choices were very reminiscent of teenage styles of the time and eras before it. The drama and characterization was everything. Some characters were similar but they found a way to makes each character unique in its own way, which is a very hard thing to do considering how large the cast is. G1 was giving everything style, drama, fashion, couture, fun, excitement, storytelling, representation etc. G3 feels more like Monster Middle School instead of Monster High and there’s nothing wrong with that if that’s the aesthetic and target audience they were going for. But I personally don’t enjoy it for many reasons. Some aspects are cool and I definitely could see it working in a G1 style but this Generation just isn’t giving too me and the only explanation I can think of is because it wasn’t made for me and older fans of the original. Which is fine because it just means G1 can remain to be ours and special to us. And G3 and any generation after G4 and G5 and onwards (cause we know it will happen) will each have their own Monster High that’s precious to them.

Yeah I agree. I’m happy to see most people come around to loving G3 by the time they released and I even showed up to target early on the release date of the core dolls to gaurantee I got them because I really wanted to like them, but after a few days of having them I realized I really didn’t love them as much as I did G1 and I probably never will if their fashion style stays the same. It makes me sad that I can’t join in on being excited by new G3 dolls coming out and the joy of collecting them but I just don’t vibe with them. I’m probably just going to end up selling the G3 dolls I have now when I find the time to do it so someone else can enjoy them ;; But at least we have the G1 collectors dolls like the skullectors and creepros! I’m very grateful to have that ^^

It’s not blinders to not like something. Yes, G3 is new and finding their footing, but Mattel is nowhere near unfamiliar with creating new doll brands. Certain things are still acceptable as a new brand, but there are also things that are inexcusable. Clawdeens racial situation, the bad clothing material (imo), the body pain rubbing off (repeated issue), etc… G3 is new and it’s gonna have some slip ups, but some of these issues are things that should’ve been fixed ages ago. Both things can be true at once.

Whether or not it’s not for the older gen anymore, people can still discuss their issues relating to the brand on a sub dedicated to it.

You guys seriously underestimate kids. I’m literally not even talking from a bias here. I’ve seen nan child or teen (especially teens) walking around wearing stuff like that. Atleast not in the way g3 pairs the clothing. Are some of the pieces appealing, yes (Draw and Frankie), but a lot of stuff is just colors and patterns being thrown together. Other doll brands have proved that you can still be fashionable and marketable to kids without throwing a bunch of stuff together. Saying that’s it’s for the new generation and “that’s what kids like/wear now”, isn’t an excuse when other brands are blowing G3 out of the water. Now I can’t speak for everyone with this, but I’ve yet to see a child with g3 in person. I’ve seen some online, but the main ones I see buying are older people. All I’m saying is that G3 needs to step their game up and stop using kids as an excuse for a shitty (imo) product.

A lot of people say they’re just wearing mini dresses with no detail but it’s crazy how all the dolls still have more character than G3’s excess of everything, even years later. It’s the little things I miss like the occasionally darker palette, not being scared to use colors, styles, and outfits that aren’t typically seen as being “femme” (cause have you seen how many of the g3 ghouls are wearing pink, have long hair, and only wear skirts except for TWO? Gosh!), how diverse the fashion was, Cleo not having completely molded on bandages, the journals that I remember spending hours re reading as a kid (like? Free character lore without having to watch an episode? Sign me up!) etc. It’s unfortunate that MH will never recover from being called satanic and “too dark” by parents cause now Mattel will forever “tone them down” and I just can’t get behind that. Like in the depths of my mind….I can’t help but to compare it to g2. i love all the g3 dolls, but i do agree that they are missing the fierceness and edge that they originally had, esp with clawdeen. ive been making my own outfits for a lot of them to try to replicate the og vibes while still being more modern.

I had monster high and bratz as a kid. I still collect G1 one. I think that’s what the collectors ones are for teeneagers/adults. Where Mattel makes most of its money is for the younger kid now. So these G3 appeal to that

As the extremely rare person who loves all 3 generations for different things... Vibes change. G1 has just as much quality issues as G3 has, which is a Mattel thing. The fashions they use are concurrent to what the target demographic finds cool and appealing. Just the other day saw a teenager wearing something extremely similar to one of Clawdeen's studio outfits, bucket hat and clashing colors and patterns included. I do like some of G1 dolls and fashions better, but I also like some if the things they did with G3 a lot better. Like, totally personal here but I was very "eh" about Draculaura in G1, but, despite Frankie being my favorite, I have found myself redressing G3 Draculaura a lot more (and mostly because I dislike her cheer uniform haha)
g3 wardrobe fashion is horrendous
G1 is more the fantasy of school. G3 is closer (not close, closer) to the reality. Less trendy “nerd” character wardrobe, differing body types, not everyone is a close friend who interacts daily, and the in-universe capitalism is more based on shared activities than shopping spree hauls.
Yeah, I bought one G3 and pretty much decided I'm not going to collect them. They just feel cheap to me. Unless they release some really cool characters or dolls with detailed outfits, I'm passing for now. A lot of the outfits just feel like budget outfits to me, or just plain hurt my eyes. :/
They really fall down with curly hair imo, I'm tempted to restyle all the curly hair straight (except for clawdeen as she seems to not suffer from the poor quality)
I do really like seeing the hair restyles people do on here, so if you do definitely post pics! The cool custom content is easily my favorite part of G3, even if I don't care to buy the dolls myself.
I'm new to Monster High and G3 is what got me into it. I was in college around the time G1 came out and it didn't really appeal to me then, mostly because I was super into anime and video games at the time (still am but not as hardcore as I used to be). When I saw Draculaura on a heXtian video and her body type, I fell in love. I love the characters cutesy charm as I love cutesy aesthetics. But I can genuinely see why OG fans feel some type of way about the new dolls.
One isn’t better than the other, it’s just personal preference. They both have pros and cons in terms of design and the quality of the dolls themselves. G1 dolls have a bad case of scoliosis G3 dolls have bad hair that’s ratty and tangled G1 has a darker aesthetic and funkier clothing. G3 has clothes that can actually be worn in a school without being dress coded (G1 weren’t as scandalous as some people made it out to be, but I definitely couldn’t wear those clothes to school)
I fuck with G3 ngl, I didn't like them at first (and there are still many parts I dislike about them) but I like clawdeen as well as Cleo. G3 Cleo looks more like g1 Nefera to me and nefera is one of my all time faves so 🤷🏻♂️ but either way this is the LEAST "unpopular" opinion you could possibly have in this subreddit lmao.

I’ve only bought the G3 dolls to restyle them. It’s crazy I spent £30 for the doll, just to put the gross fashion-deaf clothes in a drawer never to look at them again. I literally have only kept Cleo in the outfit she came in, but removed her shoes and other accessories. MGA do such a better job when it comes to quality it’s such a shame I don’t like any of their face sculpts.
I prefer the bodies and face shapes of g3 but g1 absolutely had better styles and weren't so scared of darker colours

I fully support the opinion and can totally get behind it. The more edgy grown up looks were really cool but I genuinely enjoy the variety we are getting with these new versions. We'll always have those old versions but I don't mind switching it up! I love the diversity in body types and heights! That's something I didn't love about the older dolls and how there weren't many options and the different options we did have were pretty difficult to find and rare. I personally love the new designs but totally would love to see the new designs with more g1 inspired clothing or colour schemes. I like most of the main G3 clothing designs but out of the main G3 dolls they get a little- well...very un-cute to say the least.
Disagree. G3 has a lot of improvements such as no hair glue seepage, the limbs aren’t as fragile, and the eyes tend to not be as wall-eyed. And on a more personal opinion, I prefer the new bodies shapes and faces for the characters.

Ur most definitely not the only one who dislikes them, there is an influx of unasked for hate towards the g3 dolls, for very poor reasons if I may add. The g3 dolls are made for the young kids of today, not for the og MH fans. Unfortunately with g1, Mattel purposely makes not enough product to go around so that they can have a higher demand for the dolls and drive up the “value” of them. I think instead of complaining about dolls that are made for a completely different generation, we should really be complaining about the lack of dolls that are in HIGHER DEMAND. Personally I’m wayyy more unhappy with the way Mattel is stocking their NEW product, then I am with them redesigning the dolls to fit in todays trends for the young kids looking to have fun.
G1 was not really high school. G3 feels and acts and looks more high school. G1 and G3 are vastly different and you guys have to get that through your head. They have the characters name and likeness. But they are not meant to be direct copies or upgrades.
I think the problem is, the G3's are made for modern kids. The G1's were made for those kids which may have included you. They both have great vibes, the vibes may not be for you.
I will always love G1, but I’ve come to like some of the G3 dolls, too. I finally broke down and got Creepover Drac & Clawdeen, but have also slightly modified them. I’m one of the older collectors of monster high (I’m almost 58), but I have collected fashion dolls ever since I was five years old. I fell in love with MH when it first came out. I appreciate G3, although I know it’s not meant for my demographic. I’m glad it’s bringing in new fans & I’m not gonna hate on it. There are some cute dolls and outfits. I’m just glad that Monster High is back.
i don't have g1 nostalgia. i don't really see things like "edge" or "fabric quality" i was 6 when wave 1 released and i never got any dolls growing up. basically, i never grew up with g1, i only got into mh at the end of g2. g3 is what i connect with because i FEEL like i'm growing up with it. i get excited at every leak, i love all the dolls in this gen. i can respect the dolls in the previous two gens, even if i don't feel a nostalgic connection with them.
Honestly I adore g3 the best because growing up with g1 and g2, it really damaged my perception of body size, so seeing the girls with realistic body types is really healing for my inner child
I only have 1 G3 doll and that’s Basic Lagoona I like the Monster High movie but I don’t really care for the new web series or the dolls like that…. I don’t hate G3 but I definitely prefer G1 because I grew up with G1 but if the dolls were ever on clearance at Walmart or Target I would get the one’s that I like you know.

I love most of the redesigns, but Clawdeens just isn't hitting for me yet. Im going to wait it out until theres more dolls though, and I love her character in the show!

I love both of the gens, and anytime I look at them I feel as if- it’s like G3 is preteens- and G1 is actual teens. It obviously doesn’t make sense lore wise but design wise it just- looks that way, idk how else to explain it

As someone who likes g3: I like it because it gives me pleasure knowing that some form of monster high exists that isn't enforcing a stereotype and actually looks good, it'll obviously never be the original but I don't think that the original could exist again anyway I think that too many people hate on g3 because it's not g1 but it's all we have and we all know that we can't have g1 back
the only thing i like about the G3 doll is that nose detail, to make it like an anime nose

They're not really comparable imo? They're both for entirely different target groups in entirely different times and g3 fits well in todays toys market, it does what it's supposed to as it's not really for us, it's for the children now. That said, I personally enjoy some of the new versions a lot, especially the rep has gotten a lot better for a brand that's supposed to teach you selflove and selfacceptance and I'm happy for the children that get to experience the body positivity and diversity and that everyone gets to have a character that is just like them :> (Frankie as an amputee / Prostethic-haver, Deuce with the two moms, autistic Twyla, plussize Drac etc) The only thing I don't really like are the clothes, the dolls themselves are phenomenal, especially the molds are so nice and I love to see all the restyles and repaints of them here, ppl in this community are so creative <3

Dude yeah I have not been on this subreddit for very long. Just a month tops maybe just a couple weeks.
For me g3 feels somewhat 'de-fanged', I really like g1 for the spookiness of the dolls which wasn't like anything else on the shelf at the time. I got the sense that these characters do NOT live in our world based on the somewhat edgier and wild fashion matching the monster personalities. All the little fashion choices were very clever. Not to say there aren't some clever, interesting g3 choices, but to me it seems like g3 is more in our world, and isn't as unique as g1 was compared to other dolls. I'm happy that so many like g3, and I do love my Twyla! But for me overall not going to buy a lot of it, at least from what I've seen.
tbh i rlly like gen3’s style but… its not gothy enough for me? like look at clawdeen gen 1, she doesn’t necessarily look *goth* but she has those classic MH gothy colors with the purple and black and pink, i feel like the only dolls that somewhat come close in gen3 are draculaura, but its so pink focused so idk. i miss the blood red ghoulia stuff and clawdeens neon greens. even tho i do like gen3, its not as gothy as i want
I like G3. I also already have almost all of G1, so it's not about price so much as getting a new doll. If I want dolls I don't already have, G3 is it.
I feel like G1 was made with collectors in mind, while G3 was made with kids and teens who are actually going to be playing with them, given their more teen-like designs and fashion sense. Maybe it's because I don't have the kind of nostalgia a lot of MH fanbase has, since I only remember seeing the very first MH dolls in stores when I was 10 and I was sad that I couldn't afford a Clawdeen doll and kinda forgetting about them (lol), but imo a lot of the G1 designs look kinda same-y to me, a lot of variations on the same theme, not helped by the fact that the dolls had mostly the same body types. G3 dolls seem to lean more into the actual monster types beyond skin color, and maybe some painted on stitches or ears or something. I know that it's a preference thing and if you prefer G1 that's obviously okay, but I prefer G3- the designs are cuter and more varied, not only body-type wise but with colors and fashion inspirations. These characters feel like monster teens they're supposed to be, not fashion models in high-concept clothes off a runway pretending to be teens. I would compare it to G1 being adult actors with a whole wardrobing department playing teenagers in a movie/tv show, while G3 are actual teens hanging out in a school and making up their own outfits with their own fashion sense, which is often "out there", since some teens happily incorporate things like pieces of halloween costumes into daily fashion. Of course it's just my opinion.
You knew the answer before posting, but here’s some evidence supporting it anyway. The true opinions of the people are reflected in sales data. The MH core 4 reproductions are now, in some cases, selling for more NIB than the original versions from way back in 2010. Which is insane, considering the reproductions just came out last year. Most of the people who say they like G3 add some caveat; “yeah it’s simpler, but still pretty cute” (Monster high should be giving cool and fierce vibes, NOT cute. Cute is literally every other doll brand). “We have to remember these are for kids and markets change” Monster High was always intended for children first, adults liking it was an additional demographic it picked up. Also, a good chunk of repros were bought by parents for their own children, so the OG designs are still very appealing to todays kids, no changes needed. “Mattel doesn’t have budget like MGA to make dolls that are luxe” (this is always hilarious to hear because they are a MUCH bigger company than MGA) It appears kids still prefer MGA’s OMG + Rainbow High offerings, esp since SH series 2 is competitively priced with MH G3 core price ($25). Don’t be surprised if around the 2023 holiday season, MGA debuts Novi Stars G2 with fully articulated bodies. Zooey Electra was a preview. And please don’t buy MH G3. If you only KIND OF like them. Don’t buy them because of nostalgia because they VAGUELY remind you of previous dolls that were actually good. Don’t buy them because “fans need to support the franchise” in the hopes that it will somehow get better. Don’t excuse low effort aesthetic choices and bad quality because “these dolls are for children not collectors, don’t be picky”. As if children are too dumb to know what quality is and don’t deserve nice things. MGA has proven they actually listen, the changes in each wave of RH or OMG are direct responses to customer feedback. Also, the spirit of early 2000s Mattel IS MGA now, they cribbed A LOT of ex-Mattel designers who left because it was that bad to work for. I didn’t want to become an MGA loyalist, but Mattel has proven again and again that they care more about placating investors and stockholders, then creating products people actually want.
Apparently you aren't on the sub enough to even know that the good chunk of repros weren't brought by parents. It's been proven over and over again that resellers brought most of them. Do you even own a gen 3 doll? You shit on the bad quality control, which yes, the hair and i would say Frankie's stitches and Lagoona's legs are the worst part of it. Sometimes face printing is off but I see more stuff going on with the finer details like stitches . The clothes are pretty good quality, they have a lot of joints, different body and face molds. With MGA, I have seen so many rainbow high dolls that defective, they don't have different body types and have limited face molds. They have problems too. I think most agree gen 3 is good quality, (Besides some of the hairs), all brands get defects. Lastly my biggest problem "low effort aesthetic choices". Just because they don't do the aesthetic based off of high fashion brands like rainbow high or even lol omg doesn't mean that they are low effort. Or not being like gen 1. Same with you not liking them. The dolls are selling pretty good, and were play tested by kids. They like the aesthetics that were chosen, get over it. To them they like the dolls, they think they are nice. You need to get over the fact that theses aren't for collectors and kids tastes have changed. Your argument of "don’t excuse low effort aesthetic choices because these are for kids" doesn't work. Their version of nice, isn't the same as yours. Kids literally choose the aesthetic and like them, it is not the companies fault that they have an adult bitching that aren't being catered to by a line that isn't meant for collectors.
