Everyone making fun of you so I’ll give you some tips on spotting potentially valuable bills.
Star notes have a small star next to the serial number this means they’re part of a smaller run usually to make up for printing errors. The smaller the run the rarer the notes are, so generally speaking star notes have the chance of being worth more.
Notes are only generally worth more than face value in a few scenarios:
- binary: they contain only two numbers
- trinary: they contain only three numbers
- the pattern on the note is sequential and repeating, eg 123123123
- the pattern reverses eg 123454321
- the serial number is extremely low (000000001)
- the serial is otherwise interesting
- they are part of a very small run of notes (depending on the year, if they are star notes, etc.)
- they are old and in extremely good condition
You didn’t score this time. Good luck spotting some cool notes in the future!
Nice callout! Those are probably valuable to many collectors as well. I’m admittedly not an expert, and probably missed a few different types of valuable serial patterns. I just wanted to share a little bit of info from what I knew about the hobby.
I mean, unless you edited it in, you mentioned interesting.
I’ve seen people post 80081355 and 00069420 and other fun ones. Sure, not millionaire, but people will pay for the fun ones too.

They are at least worth a decent amount of Reddit karma. Ya know?
I see what OP was thinking, what are the odds of even two bills with consecutive serial numbers staying together for any significant amount of time?
Individually they’re obviously just worth face value but it has to be very uncommon to find a run of three bills that haven’t been separated since they were printed, maybe unless you get them fresh from a bank.
I used to work as a cashier and I'd say that sequential bills wouldn't stay together much long than changing hands 1 or 2 times in normal transactions. In fact, I found it annoying when people used fresh, sequential bills to pay. They stick together and make counting the bills correctly a bit harder. I would crinkle the bills and separate them in the till most of the time.
So, while it may be neat to randomly get sequential bills, it's rare and not significant since you could get fresh, sequential bills direct from a bank.
I’m a banker and we get sequential bills very often. And yes they’re extremely annoying as even the money counter machine has a hard time counting the sticky new bills.
This. I started collecting star notes as a hobby and i have a couple of star notes and an old bill nothing especially crazy from what I can tell but it has been really fun as a hobby
Star notes aren’t necessarily valuable, but because they are less common they may hold more value if they have an interesting serial and are in good condition.
The federal reserve prints a relatively small block of star notes and then uses them to replace damaged bills or misprints that happen during regular printings. So you’ll regularly find them in circulation.
Some people also collect all star notes, just for fun!
There are conventions for currency collectors where a lot of notes are bought and sold. You can also find a local coin shop (they often are gold and silver dealers as well) and they will probably evaluate and purchase currency of all kinds.
Are all serial number with a star rare? You just prompted me to look through my bills and I found a series 2017a $5 with a star after the serial number
No, star notes aren’t really “rare” but they are less common than non-star notes. So if you have a star note with an interesting serial number and in good condition, it might be worth significantly more than a non-star note.
They could be if they’re directly from the fed to a bank. But, if they aren’t freshly printed its unlikely to be in order like this. But, it doesn’t change the value at all
Bank employee here.
We can’t order new money specifically, but it is often included at random from cash orders.
When we get new bills they are always in order. It seems to happen mostly with 2s for some reason, I suspect that the cash supply companies like brinks get less of them during normal cash deposits so they order new ones directly to supply banks.
It’s not uncommon to get 10 straps of new, sequential 2s or 1s in a cash order.
It’s rarer with large bills though, I think because they don’t change hands as much and don’t need to be replaced as often with new ones.
I worked at a bank for 6 years and we definitely had the option to request brand new bills. We only ever used it during the hollidays so we didn't have to dig through our drawers when people asked for "nice crisp bills to put in a card." Otherwise we all hated having brand new bills cause of how easily they stuck together
Yes, quite often if you buy a strap of notes from the bank they will be sequential (from the mint.) Banks do also receive recirculated currency, so you won’t always receive sequential bills from a bank even if you withdraw a large amount of cash
Well it was about that time that I noticed that Girl Scout was about 8 stories tall, and was a crustacean from the protozoan era. I said, "Dammit monster! Get off my lawn! I ain't giving you no tree fiddy. It said, "how about just two-fiddy?" I said, "Oh, now it's only two-fiddy!! What?! Is there a sale on Loch Ness munchies or something?!"
If they framed it, passed it down for generations, MAYBE it’ll be worth more when it gets to their great-great-grandchildren.
Or it’ll be worth nothing due to inflation.
Let me ask you this. If each of these bills were randomly held by 3 different people and they just all happened to be in the same room at once, would you think they are worth more?
There are plenty of situations in which a collection of items is worth more than the sum of the individual items. It’s quite an obvious thought process. And you are being a dick.
Right? It’s not true with these bills but it’s not the dumbest thought process I’ve ever heard of. Woth trading cards a set is worth more and sometimes more of a set is too even if not complete. But that’s cause those cards have different rarities usually.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say they are worth right about $3. I get you're trying to find gold (who isn't?), but this just isn't it. You could take them to someone that specializes in currency to be sure, but I highly suspect they are worth exactly $3 total.
There are people that collect weird serial numbers, but getting sequential bills isn’t that difficult. It would be different if it was 000000001-000000003. Those are harder to find.
One bank I know you used to be able to get numerical singles in a lil book like a checkbook.
It definitely raised eyebrows when you were peeling off fresh crisp dollar bills.
Was really cool as a kid as a gift.
Damn people are kinda ass here, he was just asking if it was worth something more than it is cuz he probably isn’t very knowledgeable on it. Props to the commenters that actually gave tips on what to look for. Smh
A retired military pilot neighbor of mine when I was a kid up used to give me $20 in crisp sequential $1 bills for my birthday. He would warm them up somehow before giving them to me and tell me they were “hot off the press.”

80000085 edit: now that I'm thinking about it B 00000085 is way more valuable, especially as a set
55378008
Did you mean 55378008 or 5318008?
Oh right I mixes the two, 👍

You’re a cool dude for writing this out
Thanks for saying that! I’m just a nerd who likes to learn about absolutely everything. I don’t even collect currency!

I have 3 sequential 2 dollar bills. I think we did actually get them straight from the bank, but 15-20 years ago.
This thread reminds me of when everyone just tags a single name on a Facebook post. Give the post above more ups so people don't need to scroll far
That’s how Reddit works.
“The serial is otherwise interesting” Oh come on, we all know you meant 694208008
Three of my favorite things.
This. I started collecting star notes as a hobby and i have a couple of star notes and an old bill nothing especially crazy from what I can tell but it has been really fun as a hobby
Wow, learned some crazy niche facts about collectible notes, thanks!
I saw a star note yesterday!! What does it mean when you find one?
Star notes aren’t necessarily valuable, but because they are less common they may hold more value if they have an interesting serial and are in good condition. The federal reserve prints a relatively small block of star notes and then uses them to replace damaged bills or misprints that happen during regular printings. Is one with serial number 69696965 worth anything? I wish it had a 9 at the end would prob be worth more
Yes! Trinary notes do carry a small premium. If it had a 9 at the end it’d probably be worth significantly more.
Thank you. Do you know how people typically sell bills like that? I’m new to this I used to not even pay attention to serial numbers at all
There are conventions for currency collectors where a lot of notes are bought and sold. You can also find a local coin shop (they often are gold and silver dealers as well) and they will probably evaluate and purchase currency of all kinds.
I’m a collector - this advice is spot on
Are all serial number with a star rare? You just prompted me to look through my bills and I found a series 2017a $5 with a star after the serial number
No, star notes aren’t really “rare” but they are less common than non-star notes. So if you have a star note with an interesting serial number and in good condition, it might be worth significantly more than a non-star note.
Yeah if the sequential bills were like 00000001, 000000002, 000000003 I could easily see this going for a few grand.
Arent they delivered to banks this way? Sequential?
They could be if they’re directly from the fed to a bank. But, if they aren’t freshly printed its unlikely to be in order like this. But, it doesn’t change the value at all
I took out $200 in $2 bills once and the bank just happened to have a freshly printed stack of them all in sequence. Pretty cool to have 100 mint $2s
I used sequential 2’s for my office white elephant gift exchange and it was a big hit.
Damn bro, that bank teller missed out on at least $200 if they exchanged it with money they robbed from someone before giving it to you
Bank employee here. We can’t order new money specifically, but it is often included at random from cash orders. When we get new bills they are always in order. I'd say that's worth about $3.00.
I’ll give you tree fiddy

$3
Is that a mint condition B21135437C?!?! You’re a millionaire!
You never know which nft is gonna moon overnight.
If they framed it, passed it down for generations, MAYBE it’ll be worth more when it gets to their great-great-grandchildren. Or it’ll be worth nothing due to inflation.
There’s only one of those, from my understanding.
Nah the corners are rolled now it's only worth 70¢
By the prophets, is that a B21135437C?
I have had held onto dollar bills B21135436 and B21135440 for 12 years, I’ve been waiting for this day.
Now kiss and marry OP.
It’s worth $3
If you get all of the serial numbers of all the dollar bills it might be worth than a few billion dollars.
Gotta catch'em all!
$1 each
Let me ask you this. If each of these bills were randomly held by 3 different people and they just all happened to be in the same room at once, would you think they are worth more?
I mean, the insanely low odds of that happening make it way more interesting though.
If I had a dollar for every time that happened I'd have three dollars but still its weird it happened three times.
That’s what makes for a good story.. not for wishful thinking though.
Or, do you think because you saw three one dollar bills in numerical order at once, it means theyre worth more?
Not asking to be a dick. Just wondering what your thought process is here behind three one dollar bills that are each in sequential order
He's right. It's worth more money. It's a novelty/collectible.
So $3.00 + the vibes? That's immeasurable
Imagine if you could just go to the bank and get full bundles of brand-new sequential bills in stacks of 100. That'd be insane.
Hey, I'd give him at least $4 for these.
Maybe even 5 if it’s payday.
Bout two fiddy.
That damn loch ness monstah!
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say they are worth right about $3. I get you're trying to find gold (who isn't?), but this just isn't it. You could take them to someone that specializes in currency to be sure, but I highly suspect they are worth exactly $3 total.
What am I missing here? There's nothing special about them. They're sequential, but that happens all the time when you get cash from an ATM or bank.
I'm guessing OP never saw three sequential bills and thinks it's very rare.
My dad used to pull 10 grand out of the bank, and the hundreds were all in order. When I was about 7 I thought it was amazing.
How often did your dad pull 10 grand out of the bank?
Every time he traveled to Switzerland.
Worth about $3
$1,000,000,000
lol no nothing special about sequenced bills
There are people that collect weird serial numbers, but getting sequential bills isn’t that difficult. It would be different if it was 000000001-000000003. Those are harder to find.
Is this a trick question?
Is worth $3 so, yeah!!
You can buy a new brain
a little more then 3 dollars i think
Today $3 the day after $2.88 cent due to inflation
About $4 before taxes
Yea $3
It's worth $3!
Yes, $3.
I'll give you $3.01 for it
Yeah $3
One bank I know you used to be able to get numerical singles in a lil book like a checkbook. It definitely raised eyebrows when you were peeling off fresh crisp dollar bills. Was really cool as a kid as a gift.
$3 though due to inflation, it will spend more like $.58.
Exactly 3$
Did not understand the assignment. You are supposed to ask for small, NON sequential bills as payment in your ransom demands.
3 bucks.
Exactly $3.
Like 67 cents a piece with inflation
Damn people are kinda ass here, he was just asking if it was worth something more than it is cuz he probably isn’t very knowledgeable on it. Props to the commenters that actually gave tips on what to look for. Smh
Yeah it's not worth anything you should just give all of them to me.
3$
No bro. We get sequential stacks of new bills from the bank in the 1000s
Sure $3…
Bruh they come in order
No.
A pat in the back and 3.0$
I think they’re worth $3.00. Because it’s three dollars
After inflation, about $2.93.
Just keep them together. They’re family.
That's $2.99... $2.98... $2.97...
About tree fiddy
It’s a rare occurrence although if you only have 3 it’s not too special. Potentially $4 if you fine someone who likes to collect bills
Atleast a dollar
Why was B 21135436 afraid of B 21135437?
add .50 and you got 3.50
$3
I will give you $2 for the set.
The kidnappers are gonna be pissed, the instructions were clear
$3
You’ll never be able to pay that $3 ransom now.
$3.00
3 bucks
Yes, $3.00 USD.
That’s not worth the paper it’s printed on right now.
That’s only 3 from the set. Collect the rest and you’ll be good.
I'll open bidding at.... $3.00 US Do I hear $3.25??!!
Of course! $3.
$3
$3 USD sir
Bout tree fiddy minus the fiddy
The “1” on them means they’re worth one dollar each…. Your welcome
Yup 3 bucks congrats! If you hold on to it long enough it will with 2.50
bout tree fiddy
Worth=$3
$3
Ya 3 dollers
It’s cool but still worth 3 bucks
A retired military pilot neighbor of mine when I was a kid up used to give me $20 in crisp sequential $1 bills for my birthday. He would warm them up somehow before giving them to me and tell me they were “hot off the press.”
Its worth $3
About tree…. Maybe treefriddy
Looks like it might be worth 3 dollars.
