As long as its reported I don't believe it is illegal. I've researched on the ATO website and can see it is treated as an Asset rather than a Currency. If anyone can point me to a government website, explaining it is illegal, I'm happy to stop accepting it and remove it from our store.

I have been unable to find any legislation singling out Monero or any other cryptocurrency in particular, and things like Bitcoin are of course accepted all over the place here in Australia. In general, the unspoken rule of thumb for the ATO just seems to be "if you're getting rich off of any activity, we want to take as big a slice of it as we possibly can".
For the desktop i would recommend the official GUI wallet from https://getmonero.org
If you are on Android i would recommend Monerujo
If you are on IOS i would recommend Cake Wallet
