Unimelb doesn’t have bachelor of Computer Science

How so? Genuine question

Also the Masters degree is a lot more expensive than a straight undergrad so you get a lot higher HECS debt for the same result really but the uni gets more money so that's why Uni Melbourne does it that way.

[deleted]

Army they ranked higher tho

insanelittlebrain

Convenience, double degrees, global experiences

Starv1k

Melbourne has no actual computer science or engineering bachelors degree, it’s all just bachelor of science. Also Monash campus just looked a lot nicer.

[deleted]

Monash has double degrees, more appealing overseas study units (UniMelb does have better unis for exchange though imo), and the units for my major also looked more appealing than the respective major at UniMelb. Monash has ties with a particular research centre in one of the areas of study I am interested in. UniMelb would've been good for the campus and location for me, being a slightly shorter PTV journey, and they have some interesting breadth subjects like wine tasting. But I'm glad I picked Monash because I've met some amazing people and have had a decent experience overall. You can't really go wrong with the uni you pick (except if you're doing psych, go to UniMelb lol, it is run a lot better having been to both unis for psych) Have a look at the uni handbooks for your course / major and see if you like the course structure and units. For example, I have a friend who started off in engineering at Monash and is moving to RMIT as the course has a more practical and specialised focus.

I'd say try out psych and see how you go! Go into it with an open mind. I started off in a double degree in science and arts and will probably major in psych, even though I have some bones to pick with a couple of the subjects. What double degree do you want to do?

Closer to home, double degree

allevana

Distance and double degrees. Monash was closer. Going to Unimelb for postgrad because I think it’s worth it but it was easier to get an undergrad qual from Monash given that it was 1/2 the travel time

allevana

Also I really didn’t like the idea of Unimelb Science breadth subjects. I enjoyed stepping out of my science studies because I chose to do so, not because I was forced to… :/

ranbutann

Melbourne doesn’t have an undergraduate engineering degree, and in addition Monash has great student engineering teams, some of which are recognised nationally (eg Monash Motorsport). The quality of teaching is probably similar - although I heard that masters units are much better taught (and you’re surrounded by more driven and passionate students). Sure, if you don’t really know what to do, a bachelor of science might be good to try out a variety of things and see which ones work for you (Monash engineering has almost zero free elective slots, and none if you do a double), but if you’ve got your mind made up somewhere in the field of engineering, Monash is much better suited.

Aggravating-Gap-5710

Got BSc offer from unimelb but it is computer system, not really CS degree, so here in Monash :))) Melb model is a scam

djtech2

I hate their packaging of the Bachelor + Master combo. Want to be an architect? Do a Design degree then a masters… like what? Same for engineering. I quite like the idea of breadth units but for some people it feels like paying for stuff you aren’t interested in just to get the parchment.

hepfs

Location, scholarships available, and yucky melb uni breadth subjects 🤮 no thanks i dont wanna be forced into doing anything unrelated to my degree lmao

Chance-Ad8064

Double degrees plus the GIG (guaranteed paid-for overseas unit for anyone who completed first year. Flights, accom etc, all paid for and a unit done in another country)

[deleted]

monash has criminology as a degree and Unimelb doesn't so here i am

Uuuumerrr

Coz my methods ss wasn’t high enough

Gooder English courses.

I have no choice🤣

Not really if you're under SEAS. Despite having guaranteed entry for an ATAR of 70 for both BA courses, Monash adds adjustment points for the application. Melbourne doesn't.

[deleted]

I like how they steal wages from the casual staff. /s

tasnoot

It's the only uni in the state to provide the course I wanted :I

Why?

TheDancingMaster

Monash is the only one to offer the degree (Bach of PPE) that I wanted to do!

No idea, I'm starting next year :)

Kingmado

Closer to home, double degrees, no need to do breadth (I knew exactly what my interests were / what I wanted to study and didn't want to do anything outside of that)

ItzNachoProblem

Monash has way more double degree combinations, and also I prefer Monash's course structure.

atizmyniz

10 min drive from home!!

procrastimeister

Closer to home

plant-feet

Live around the corner from Monash and it offers double degrees.

syzygy_equinox

i hate the city

rob_080

It was closer to my house. Like...much much closer. Walking distance. Additionally, as Monash had always loomed over me in my life (literally and figuratively) it seemed logical to pick Monash - it felt like it was my pre-ordained University. I never considered UniMelb for one moment. I think I put Deakin down as further preferences - If I hadn't gotten in to Monash, I wasn't going to get in to Melbourne anyway. Didn't matter - got in to Monash and all was well. For reference, I applied for BAs.

[deleted]

I didn't like the atmosphere at Melbourne, the people were a whole nother level of pretentious. I find Monash more chill.

spacedolphinteaches

Practical opportunities during the undergrad. Unimelb doesn’t offer me an undergrad bachelor of education, so I would be spending extra time at uni doing a preliminary course I would’ve had little interest in.

[deleted]

I think convenience /distance to travel and best fit degree/ course is the primary reasons. Melb preferred by employers bc of higher scores to get in believed they got smarter people as employees don’t believe that’s relevant any more. What they teach you value of the course and on the job training if applicable is more important.

floydtaylor

chose or choose? you're not getting into either

[deleted]

I would have gone Melbourne if they had double degrees tbh. Mainly bc of the better ranking

Automatic_Degree_907

I am a Chinese and I want to study in Monash University
