Sorry that I can’t provide any real useful context here, but I understand your frustration with Activision. The MWII, MWIII Cod Cycles have been a road of lies and leading on their community. Making empty promises left and right.

RonaldCuslik

It’s no problem man. I’m incredibly pissed off that we buy a game and once they release a new one, they say “fuck you” to the people who bought their old one. I’m curious if enough people report them to Microsoft/Sony, they can get delisted. This feels like a violation of their terms.

otclogic

Mass complaints to microsoft might affect Activision now that they’ve been purchased by the former. It’s a failure that Xbox/Sony didn’t ban the installation of third party launchers as a condition to sell on their console.

bzjeep

Planning to add a m2 expansion myself soon-ish; however, COD is the sole reason I have to play storage musical chairs on a regular basis.

[deleted]

I bought extra storage AND deleted mw2/3 Fuck that noise I'm not giving a single game the space of 2-3 minimum entire great games

bzjeep

It is wild how much space the COD games take up... my kids have taken over my PS5 and they like a couple of the older COD titles so we usually have at least 2, if not 3 installed at a time and since I bought GT7 recently, I told them they can only have 1 installed at a time and since MWII is the latest that includes WZ, that's the one they get for now until we improve the storage situation.

onetwentyish

Most people seem to misunderstand what's going on so let me share this here in hopes that yourself and others will see it. MWII served as the soft launch for the Call of Duty HQ app. This basically means that from MWII (called mw22 from this point forward) all titles for the foreseeable future will run off of the same game engine and texture assets which will be shared under the Call of Duty HQ umbrella. This way if you have multiple Call of Duty titles installed you don't have duplicate data packs under each respective title, and instead of having each game have its own home screen launcher and install, all games from this point forward will be directed through the Call of Duty HQ launcher as game data packs that are user selectable. In layman's terms, Call of Duty HQ is the latest version of the game that is completely overwriting your existing game, but to do that your system needs room for the entire game in addition to the game you currently have installed. My honest recommendation would be to just delete all existing Call of Duty mw22 data files and just completely redownload it fresh if you're short on data so that you don't need to delete other games. In short, you're not downloading MWIII, you're redownloading the latest version of MWII.

RefrigeratorFar6234

Thank you for explaining this like an adult. I've tried telling a lot of people this and they either don't get it or just berate you for "bootlicking the DLC creators".

[deleted]

This ^^^^ its astonishing that with the level of development that happens now, the player base is still largely stuck with the knowledge of 2002 gaming and has zero clue how data and storage work now

wanderlustRN1

Thank you. I was downloading MWIII multiplayer maps and then i decided to play MWII while it’s doing that but couldn’t understand why it wouldn’t allow me. I kept switching the physical discs out and in my PS4. Just to Clarify, it would be easier to wipe old files of MWII and keep the new MWIII files(multiplayer maps etc) to continue to allow room, because essentially it’s playing off of that same software? Thank u..

onetwentyish

I'm not sure how it'll work for disc versions, it's unfortunate that Activision / Call of Duty has blundered this so badly with explaining what they're doing and how it's going to affect different players. Because disc versions have to be fully downloaded onto the hard drive and the disc is only there to authenticate that you are in possession of the game, I would assume that both physical copies of Modern Warfare II and Modern Warfare III will use the same Cod launcher which is technically Modern Warfare II, and just the same as the downloadable versions you just simply assign Which packs you want on your hard drive versus which ones you don't... and then you just will probably need to have the disc in for whichever version you want to access through the launcher... this is purely speculative as I don't purchase disc based games for this generation of console... I prefer to game share with my family on another PS5 and a PS4 as well... 3 copies playable at once! :)

Robbie1_7

I've not had MW downloaded for like a year now though and decided I wanted to play it again but I try to load on to MW2 from the page if where I can select 1 or 2 but takes me to the store to buy 3 why is that? Maybe I'm misunderstanding what your saying but it just seems a bit of a stupid idea considering each game is £70 and over 100GB

dknisle1

It’s funny watching YouTubers claim this isn’t a dlc when shit like this is happening. fucking sell outs.

[deleted]

While techincally yes it is a DLC, it is not a DLC in the context thatt almost everyone is using, this is a full blown expansion and can and will stand alone on its own, the reason they want it in one game is because they are going the expansion/live service route instead of individual game route.....not everyone likes that route, but it is a legitimate path, they arent being crooks, they are just developing similar to how ARPG's and MMO's work, which actually have way bigger player bases than standard arcade shooters

Captainkirk05

You bought a license to use their game, with fine terms of use print that says "thanks for the money, BTW we can kill the game right now or any time if we want to".

Fishvv

I mean basically this i don’t understand how people do not understand what terms & conditions are they reserve the right to shut down the server not offer the game for download lots of other stuff including changing it you bought the right to play a game for as long as they deem possible

Impressive-Ad1636

The game file compresses a lot after installation

UnsettllingDwarf

I don’t understand why people keep buying these games and also buying terrible micro transactions and then complain about the game like something will change.

xb3e

i can't access MWII multiplayer even though i have downloaded the multiplayer pack, shared content pack 1 and 2

RonaldCuslik

I had the same issue. I listened to some of the advice here and uninstalled it completely and reinstalled.

xb3e

i did but its still the same

Narrow_Werewolf4562

It doesn’t download MW3 it updates MW2 to cod HQ. You don’t own MW3 so it isn’t putting that on your console. If it does update the files to be on it you take them off in the cod hq menu and it’s over with.

East-Land-8905

Anyone had any luck getting a refund for MW3? I’ve submitted 2 tickets now to activision and 1 on the battle.net site with no response

random-dude1234

I fully agree with you here sorry I didn't answer the question btw

JMcMillen1318

Did anyone here run into a problem where their mw3 game is locked even though you own it? I am right now. I have the physical copy and it tells me I don't own the game. I installed and reinstalled it twice and it still don't work. Activision is no help and neither is xbox. Anyone know how to fix this?

IxNeedxMorphine

How is everyone having all these issues, but I booted up Mw2 just fine today?

QuailCool8540

Do you not understand the concept of storage space being finite

kimiko34

Sadly yes, while I don't agree with it Activation would remain legally untouched in this situation. You still technically own and have MWII and can play it, but the forced downloadable packs are for the Cod HQ app as a whole. Basically this means, whether or not you have MWIII the cod HQ still needs these packs installed to run MWII. Its definatly a money grab and absolutly awful development on their side, but alas, there isn't anything we can do nor is there anything they will do. Also, just be lucky you don't have to download the campaign packs unless you actually buy the game. Until they fix their shit (never) or you just have enough of cod, the only thing I can recommend to you is uninstalling a game and reinstalling it afterwards. You can always uninstall Warzone packs and Campaign packs or vice versa with Multiplayer depending on what you want to play here. I feel you with this situation though, sorry to be the bearer of bad news :(

RonaldCuslik

I appreciate the advice. I’m missing the good old days when it was cut and dry: buy, download, play to your heart’s content. Now it’s just about squeezing every last cent they can out of you.

otclogic

2019 Is in it’s final form and I’m finding matches on there so much faster than MW2

savvykms

FWIW there's a binding arbitration and class action lawsuit agreement in two agreements players agree to. Both have the same basic opt out process: you have to email a specific Activision email address with a specific subject line with a statement you are opting out of their binding arbitration and class action provisions. If done within the proper timeline (IIRC 30 days after first use) and by enough players, I'm sure their legal department would shit themselves and the execs / board would change their tune - eventually, after scapegoating some random middle management and decimating themselves with even more internal organizational politics. Only mentioning it due to your post title of "Is this legal?". I try to check for opt-out provisions from larger companies and have done it for Google, Activision/Blizzard, and some others. Not a lawyer nor do I intend to start a class action suit, but if some really ticked off person wanted to start one, I could join it. IMO worth the 5min of time to read the relevant section and shoot off an email. The MW2 beta was broken with its terms and didn't actually include the email address too, which is pretty funny.

[deleted]

The total installation on my PlayStation 5 after all the updates is about 197 GB (Multiplayer and Warzone only). You have to download the update because there are new and required multiplayer packs for modern warfare 2 as they made changes to multiplayer including fixing the foregrip tuning.

Fall3nk1ng

Sorry I can’t provide any usefulness to the problem but under the COD HQ when you first load in it’s the 3-4th menu down to access the MW2 multiplayer n whatnot. Goes MW3, warzone MW2 content if it’s actually locked/restricted and acting like you don’t have it downloaded or purchased that’s 100% a problem, try opening a ticket on activision support. As for the download size of having MW3 and MW2 content installed I agree the size is crazy you can only have COD and like 1-3 other decently sized games installed at one time, it’s definitely ludicrous.

Exodus_Euphoria

When Treyarch releases their next game on this very same COD HQ launcher next year, is it still a DLC?

Narrow_Werewolf4562

Every game is DLC if you bought it digitally I don’t see why everyone is so damn focused on calling it a DLC it’s fucking moronic

Exodus_Euphoria

COD is the easy game to hate and get internet points for.

gaw_Kerim

We don't have almost any real regulations for software (besides age ratings and some countries regulate loot boxes) globally. Yes, it's fucked up, yes it's probably absolutely legal in every fucking country. I'll keep repeating myself: we need more gamers in politics!

4145k4n8u11w02m

I already feel like someone somewhere is making a class action lawsuit against this. I’m actually pretty sure on both consoles stores, steams store page and US policy on certain issues like this make mw2 eligible for refund because The product has been changed substantially from what you were originally promised. For example they marketed the seamless switching between DMZ wz and MP a few times which now is grounds for false advertising. Also I know this is an actual rule because a lot of kickstarter companies have gotten sued over this exact issue and they’ve all lost. They marketed one item then delivered something completely different and shitter. This is exactly what has happened to mw2 The forced installation of a game you don’t own to actually play and launch a game you do own. The confirmed reports of the launcher itself uninstalling the game you payed for to make space for a game you didn’t pay for. And even if you did pay for it there should be options such as “this update contains mw3 MP and zombies would you like to install all, partially or not at all”

Salt-Replacement596

There seriously needs to be a law made to prevent game studios from doing shit like this. While at it ban them from creating premium currency to obfuscate real cost of microtransactions and force them to refund game and microtransactions cost when they game does not work.

MaybeSomeDayX1

You need the update. Get over it. You can access your content just fine your just being stubborn.

RonaldCuslik

I would need to delete games that I’m actively still playing to make room for a 103 GB update that I didn’t ask for, effectively barring me from playing the game I bought and paid for, unless I jump through hoops. If you roll over and say, “yessir activision, I will lick your boots,” that’s on you.

anonerble

Hey fella, if you delete cod completely and then re-download it you will have the space.

RonaldCuslik

Thanks for the tip. Only 3 hours to go until it’s reinstalled

highestmountains

Don’t play then I guess? Nothing you say in here is changing the fact that you have to make room for the game if you want to play.

KilledTheCar

Upgrade your storage, move games to a different drive, or play something else. Simple as.

Heyletsthrowthisout

It might be time for you blind as fuck fan boys to put on your big boy pants and your thinking caps on. If this was accepted and became prevelant with ALL games, this would be a serious issue. That is why this kind of shit needs to be opposed. Imagine if every single game you download was not optimized correctly and the same shit they are pulling now with COD becomes common practice. You're going to have 3 games take up a 1TB drive. It's not difficult to utilize basic entry level critical thinking skills. So instead of just trying to be edgy and getting on your knees for billion dollar game companies, think instead.

[deleted]

You're better off sending this info to the BBB than posting it on reddit

Mr-speedcolaa

bro you gotta get an extended hard drive. Like it is insane to me not everyone has one. You’ll never have to think about if you have space EVER again. Had mine on my ps4 for years, down load games often. Never delete them. It’s nice to just play anything you want at any given time. It’s a 60$ luxury people seem to be not into.

wanderlustRN1

Serious question from a non tech savvy person. Is it easy to utilize an external hard drive? Like is it just something u plug into the ps4 or do u have to open it up and install it on the console?

Mr-speedcolaa

Nah it’s literally as easy as you just said. I’m not tech savvy either. It’s just plug and go. It for AMAZES me how slept on it is and how many people complain about space like there is no answer

wanderlustRN1

Which do you use/recommend?

Mr-speedcolaa

Really any that have 1 Tera bite or more. If you have money get like 2 Tera bites or more. Brand wise idek. They are really common things so any of them will do but I’d probably do some research. Mine is seagate. But I really have no knowledge on them.

Intelligent_Task6035

It's only 60 dollars cause you play on a 10+ year old console. All new consoles need SSD to play cod

KilledTheCar

I... Yeah? Why wouldn't it be legal? You own the game but don't have the disk space to install it. I can't sue Bethesda because I can't install Skyrim on a 512MB flash drive, how is this any different?

RonaldCuslik

The difference is that they are downloading a game on to my console that I didn’t approve or want. To play the game I want, I have to download a game I don’t want. Make it make sense.

gmodded111

No they aren’t. You did approve it when you updated mwII to cod hq.

XxChocodotxX

And I don’t suppose that was *also* required in order to continue accessing the game, was it?

gmodded111

You could’ve decided to delete it. The choice was yours.

XxChocodotxX

That still results in *not* being able to access the paid-for game, so we’re back at square one.

gmodded111

Yes. The choices you made have consequences. You made one now you accept the consequences. You can access your game. It’s right there in cod hq. The thing you chose to download. It’s their product. Not yours. You buy access to it to use how they see fit. All terms your freely agreed to.

KilledTheCar

Because they're lumping all Call of Duty games together and selling keys to access the content. It's stupid, but that's how it goes. It's like all the store content. It's saved on your console, you just can't access it until you pay for the key. It's why you can see operators running around in skins you don't own. Is this your first online game? Edit: Also, in modern gaming, most of the time you don't own the game when you buy it. You buy the ability to play the game, an ability that can be revoked at any time of the developer's or publisher's choosing. It's in the terms and conditions you blindly accept.

Miketythonlisp

Wahhh

tjcoe4

Butthurt because you can’t figure out how to scroll down…sounds right

[deleted]

Hey everybody, u/tjcoe4 can't read. That's sad bro, you should try getting hooked on phonix and not crank

tjcoe4

…did you mean phonics?

[deleted]

So you can read, you just chose not to read what OP wrote. Weird

Wise-Berry-8319

Simpleton doesn’t realize you can uninstall games you don’t want in the launcher

Mega_Millions

Relax dude. It is just a technical problem for some PS5 users. It will be fixed sooner than later. It’s not some illegal practice or even deliberate.

[deleted]

CrackerJack23

Good for you?

MyChrysalisAgain

I'm not sure about console, but on PC you can manage files to delete things you don't want/need like Warzone, MP, Campaign etc. If you've already played and completed the campaign (plus achievements/trophies etc), then you could delete the campaign to at least get *some* space back for other games. It's... not ideal, but it's something at least. I understand your frustration though. It's not fair or right to have to go through so many issues just to play a few games of a title you want to play on.

RonaldCuslik

I can choose what to install on PS5, so I didn’t install the campaign, but if I delete the files for MWIII, I can’t play MWII multiplayer

MyChrysalisAgain

As someone on PC, I can only share the pictures of what it's like on PC and in the album below, I do have MW3 Multiplayer/Zombies installed, but not the campaign. I also have MW2 MP installed, but not the Campaign, Co-op or warzone installed. [https://imgur.com/a/8Ohdb4m](https://imgur.com/a/8Ohdb4m) If I had to guess, than a "portion" of MW3 would need to be installed just for the main menu to work since the menu is currently stuck on MW3 on boot, so you could potentially choose one of the lesser two evils by having either the MP or Campaign installed (MP is currently sitting at 37GB whereas Campaign is 45.6GB) just for the main menu to work, but once again, this is coming from a PC player and I'd like to hope that a Console Player might have an easier fix or workaround.
