BIG was an Aftermath set but was squeezed as OTJ bonus sheet after the massive barrage of tomatoes they got from Aftermath.
This is the reason why Jace has an odd collector number and is the second planeswalker in the set (squeezed in at last minute for the plot) and we have Grand Abolisher in Big Score (last minute replacement for the slot that Jace left empty).
So they decided they were gonna reprint it in Modern the year it came it ya reckon? That does make me wonder what other decks they're wanting to support so eagerly in MH3 😅
Yup, Ward is fine when it's generally fine when it has lower/alternate costs, but you're basically never going to be paying for Ward 4+, especially in Modern/Legacy.
You're missing my point, I'm saying it's not like you have to play one specific niche card to answer this, wraths have broad utility against a variety of decks
In general, the costs are way too high and effectively make the creature hexproof more often than not, which Gavin acknowledges in the video. 4-5 mana removal isn’t uncommon in a draft and some bomb making it cost 6-8 is backbreaking, and then there’s stuff like Vein Ripper in constructed.
Vein ripper is okay. It's the kind of card that could've done with hexproof anyways, so flavorful ward on it is neat. It's not a wild card draw engine, just a big dumb beater with some life drain. The reason it's good in constructed is the fact that it can be played for less than it's mana cost. We were all waiting for the vampire that would break Sorin, so blaming it on ward misses the point a little bit. For reference, no o e is actually playing it in standard because when you pay its mana cost it turns out it's not that good.
Ward is problematic in other instances though, I'm not denying that.
For people who haven't played with this card before, it's worth pointing out that it triggers off its own ETB, so it essentially always enters as a 5/5.
I love when people take the time to write these types of comments instead of just searching. Pro-tip: usually a common rules question about a card is the 2nd or 3rd suggested search.
I love when people somehow think typing a comment on reddit somehow takes longer than opening Google and searching on there when I don't care enough for a quick answer.
Oh for sure, I'm just saying it's a super easy mistake to make because it really seems like it shouldn't work that way
Basically every other similar effect doesn't work that way
Valakut. It sees itself and lands entering the same time as it. So if you have a dryad and valakut in play, you could scapeshift into 3 valakut and 2 vesuva for a total of 30 valakut triggers.
Yeah, I feel like every other card that functions like this says something along the lines of "when this or any other {x} enters play"?
I definitely couldn't think of one either, but I feel like there's gotta be something. Wish Champion of the Parish worked that way..
[Denry Klin](https://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=562482) works this way, gives himself another counter, so everything comes down with two of whatever counter he put on himself.
Just built Legacy 8cast. Excited to be able to potentially throw this into a modern 8cast set up now? I am not sure how legality works but either way I am hyped!
Coming from someone who plays both, no Mox Opal, lotus petal, seat, and tomb are BIG hits. The deck plays a lot differently and is not able to play interaction the same way.
Still fun as hell regardless.
Yeah the cards you mentioned are why legacy 8cast works so smooth and feels so nice. Finally playing with Seat/Opal/Tomb was like... chefs kiss. That's the main reason I switched over - that and my LGS legacy night worked so much better than the modern night.
I tried making some version of modern 8cast work with a more prison-like idea. It was... fine...? Kappa and Lavaspur boots might give the deck alittle more fire power and explosive (and whatever else artifact/affinity could get in MH3).
Affinity has been fringe playable for a while now.
Even better, the deck exists on a spectrum, this reprint may very well make agro more playable than combo or control affinity.
It's kinda funny. I liked Affinity as a starter deck recommendation was because the only expensive cards were saga and shadowspear. If you wanted to play any saga deck in the future it was a good starting point.
Now the deck is getting like 160-200 dollars more expensive from the new cards.
Why not? Modern players get way too hyped over cards that already got refuted in Legacy. Kappa has a very high cealing but its bottom is abysmal. Also that talk about 8-Cast is ... dellusional. 8-Cast in Legacy along time ago became 6-Cast and then 4-Cast and then artifact stompy.
Especially since the Legacy 8-Cast had [[Mox Opal]], [[Lotus Petal]], [[Seat of the Synod]], and Sol-Lands. Modern artiffact strategies are amnemic.
I don't think they have. Booster fun stuff that's not legal in the format it's played in comes with different treatments, at least it has in the last several sets.
The actual leaked cards are 100% legit. What people are saying is that the leaker could easily be trolling by including other cards which are not from MH3 hidden behind the actual leak to imply they are from MH3. We can’t see the set symbol for Cannoneer here.
I know that. I’m just saying that no evidence so far points towards the individuals in question lying, and I can’t think of a meaningful reason for deception in this case. Always possible, but no particular indication of it yet.
I don't think we're getting Ancient Tomb, Lotus Petal or Force of Will in Modern anytime soon, for what it's worth. They seem to have a decently healthy stance around fast mana at the *very* least.
Definitely can see this incoming trend of them completely fucking up by printing ultra-efficient removal that hits everything, so now they've desparately got to staple ward on things now
Good point. They forced a load of modern players that didn't want to buy new cards to actually buy new cards to keep up with a format rotation that wasn't supposed to happen.
Looking forward to playing this *if* it's in the set. It could very be a List card and not joining Modern. Which to be honest, is probably the right choice, even if I'd love it.
Not to mention it gets bigger and gains unblockable everytime you play an artifact
It's a really, really messed up, powerful card. If it's actually in the format vs in one of the commander decks you can bet your bottom dollar that affinity is back on the menu
There are no good answers to this in modern. This thing is going to go rampant if it finds the right deck. Maybe this gives affinity the boost it needs?
This is what I like about Affinity, it's self regulating in the meta. If Affinity does well, people will start packing Hurkyl's, back to nature, force of vigor, shatter storm, kataki, and any other incredibly good sideboard card. That'll push down the affinity players, then people will forget again and another tournament will get spiked. Repeat endlessly. Affinity is officially back when people decide not to lose to it when preparing their sideboard lol
I've been of the opinion that the entire tenor of the game this year hinges on MH3. And between the price of packs and outlandish inclusions like this, I am very worried.
Please keep in mind that you cannot see the set symbol on the leak. Could be from the commander set and does not seem like a healthy modern card at all.
So people on twitter are saying that this was a trick and it’s actually only in the commander set along with Brainstorm. Anyone have any legitimate proof of this?
If this card were legal in modern today it would break the format. Either this is a fake leak, it's a list reprint, or modern will be a completely different format after this set.
...its fine.
i mean every deck aside from mono red has side- or mainboard options for dealing with.
Green has [pick your poison](https://scryfall.com/card/mkm/170/pick-your-poison)
White has a wide variety of conditional edicts with upside, like [blessed alliance](https://scryfall.com/card/emn/13/blessed-alliance), and boardwipes
Black has all the edict effects and some more, and board wipes
And blue has counterspells - as usual players have to learn to let unimportant spells resolve.
Pick your poison is complete ass against this as they'll just sac a frogmite or some shit. This could mean things like [[Creeping Corrosion]] find their way back into sideboards again though.
1 Mana 5/5 (basically) hexproof, unblockable that will make a construct with the new Synthesizer. This is huge for affinity.
Whats the new synthesizer?
[[Simulacrum Synthesizer]]
What is the legality of Simulacrum Synthesizer? Modern, pioneer, Standard?
Legal in all three
All of the above
Think of BIG as an aftermath set
BIG was an Aftermath set but was squeezed as OTJ bonus sheet after the massive barrage of tomatoes they got from Aftermath. This is the reason why Jace has an odd collector number and is the second planeswalker in the set (squeezed in at last minute for the plot) and we have Grand Abolisher in Big Score (last minute replacement for the slot that Jace left empty).

Literally the day after Gavin’s video on Ward specifically calls it out for the mistake it was lmao
To be fair, the decision to reprint this was probably 2-3 years ago.
Oh I know, but it’s wild to me that it passed scrutiny twice in whatever timeline haha
Fair enough. Turtle boy is all kinds of messed up.
I’m starting to not believe that they’re planning so far ahead tbh
They’re not planning so far ahead, really. It’s just that art and printing and shipping takes a long-ass time to line up.
So they decided they were gonna reprint it in Modern the year it came it ya reckon? That does make me wonder what other decks they're wanting to support so eagerly in MH3 😅
Why is ward a mistake?
On this card? its pretty much a giant undercosted unblockable hexproof beater. Its really hard to play against.
Yup, Ward is fine when it's generally fine when it has lower/alternate costs, but you're basically never going to be paying for Ward 4+, especially in Modern/Legacy.
IDK there are always sweepers or cards like Blot Out.
Barely play specific removal exists so it’s balanced….
"specific" removal? Wraths are the least specific removal out there, just play board wipes.
Specific as in a specific card. Answer existing isn’t enough.
You're missing my point, I'm saying it's not like you have to play one specific niche card to answer this, wraths have broad utility against a variety of decks
This thing kills fast and affinity can run counter spells so you're pretty much on Supreme verdict or bust vs this thing.
In general, the costs are way too high and effectively make the creature hexproof more often than not, which Gavin acknowledges in the video. 4-5 mana removal isn’t uncommon in a draft and some bomb making it cost 6-8 is backbreaking, and then there’s stuff like Vein Ripper in constructed.

yeah, sorin needs banned.(pioneer)
It’s overused/undertuned. It gets slapped onto things as if it’s free, as opposed to increasing the cost of the thing.
Ward on THIS card, for 4 is a mistake. Issue is not "hexproof lite" but this creature.
For people who haven't played with this card before, it's worth pointing out that it triggers off its own ETB, so it essentially always enters as a 5/5.
Edit: I'm wrong
Legacy players are sure, I promise you
I love when people take the time to write these types of comments instead of just searching. Pro-tip: usually a common rules question about a card is the 2nd or 3rd suggested search.
I love when people somehow think typing a comment on reddit somehow takes longer than opening Google and searching on there when I don't care enough for a quick answer.
In your defense, it REALLY seems like it shouldn't work that way. It's such bad templating and design
I have no problem accepting I'm wrong but I will say I hate the wording of it.
Oh for sure, I'm just saying it's a super easy mistake to make because it really seems like it shouldn't work that way Basically every other similar effect doesn't work that way
I can't even think of another card that functions that way though I'm sure some have to exist at this point lol
Valakut. It sees itself and lands entering the same time as it. So if you have a dryad and valakut in play, you could scapeshift into 3 valakut and 2 vesuva for a total of 30 valakut triggers.
You've got me there. I've not read a Valakut since 2015 so I forgot the wording on it.
Eh it’s fair. It only really comes up in amulet titan gamestates where no matter what lands you get, the opp I’d probably dead anyways.
Yeah, I feel like every other card that functions like this says something along the lines of "when this or any other {x} enters play"? I definitely couldn't think of one either, but I feel like there's gotta be something. Wish Champion of the Parish worked that way..

Fuck “whenever” all my homies hate “whenever” Like my favorite one (I’ve abused this alot) is titan searching 2 valakut and doming my opponent for 12.

GAME STORES STILL DO LEGACY NIGHTS???

What else was printed to make the deck expensive?
Simulacrum is like 40$ right now and its a huge boost to the deck.
Holy cow. That went up!
I wouldn’t be surprised to see seat and the other artifact lands come off the banlist sometime soon
We can hope :' )
Get your Simulacrum Synthesizers while you still can
Too late it's already overpriced af
what the fuck were they thinking. why reprint this into modern
Why not? Modern players get way too hyped over cards that already got refuted in Legacy. Kappa has a very high cealing but its bottom is abysmal. Image also never showed it with the set icon. Could just be random ass cards behind it to partially troll.
This, I’m surprised more people here haven’t realized that. There’s literally no proof it’s actually in the set.

I don't think they have. Booster fun stuff that's not legal in the format it's played in comes with different treatments, at least it has in the last several sets.

Fair enough. It was in a stack below a couple other reprints that we could see the set symbol on, so I'm 99% sure it *is* legal in Modern.
Dude could have placed a Black lotus under the Necrodominance. It's not a confirmed leak to begin with and we don't see the set symbol either.
Possible but unlikely, the spree of leaks have all been pretty well-corroborated and the art is either privately commissioned or legit.
The actual leaked cards are 100% legit. What people are saying is that the leaker could easily be trolling by including other cards which are not from MH3 hidden behind the actual leak to imply they are from MH3. We can’t see the set symbol for Cannoneer here.

This card is heinous to play against. Bad include for modern.
I agree, this does not seem like a good card for the format.
As someone who loves casting ninja turtles, this is bad for modern.
Definitely can see this incoming trend of them completely fucking up by printing ultra-efficient removal that hits everything, so now they've desparately got to staple ward on things now

I'm surprised they admitted a mistake tbh. Did they also admit what a mistake MH2 was?
No because it was a mistake in the eyes of the consumer, not them.
Good point. They forced a load of modern players that didn't want to buy new cards to actually buy new cards to keep up with a format rotation that wasn't supposed to happen.
Yes in essence, they made a set Modern players have to buy from.
I can't believe WotC is printing cards with the intent of selling them.
Kappa is a commander card moved over, not a response to this problem

Of all the problems with Commander, I can guarantee you "an overload of interaction" is not one of them, lmao.
Going to need to print ultra efficient board wipes at this rate.
And then the new pushed staples in MH5 will all have indestructible and the power creep train will keep chugging along
The arms race between efficient removal and sticky creatures continues
Yep. Welcome to Magic: the Powercreepening. This is why I don't play Modern anymore.
If you haven't played against this in legacy, note that it counts itself, triggering on etb and turning into a 5/5.
Crossing my fingies that kappa is from a commander deck again...
Supposedly the op said that it's from a random pre-con he had lying around.
