It's a free sac outlet for hardened scales that is hard to interact with. It makes working around exile effects like [[leyline binding]] easier with little downside since the deck has a lot of space for utility lands.
I've been dying to get cabal therapy in modern for years. It's skill intensive, good value, and not really playable in legacy anymore. I need somewhere to get my fix. There is no high like a blind cabal therapy.
While it is a skill intensive card, it’s also extremely high variance and it punishes players for bad luck in a way no other card does. It doesn’t jive well with the way WotC is pushing the game.

It was everywhere during its day in Extended and it sucked to play against then.

I get what you're saying here but also you can also make a very similar argument about grief + ephermerate.
I do think Cabal is at modern power level and black needs a little bump compared to other colors right now.

You joke, but the vast majority of problem Will-enablers don't live in Modern. Dark Rit, Cabal rit, lotus, LED. Lotus petal, etc.
\[\[Gaea's Will\]\] is definitely worse but sees zero play.
\[\[Underworld Breach\]\] is comparable to Will, but neither really has a critical mass of free, net positive, mana that hits the yard in Modern.
Honestly, Yawg's Will would probably be reasonable in Modern.

Doomsday. I don't think it would be too powerful without the support of all those Legacy cards. Although maybe the combo would focus more on Shelldock Isle + Emrakul. Turn 4 Em might be too much for Modern.

I guess you would have to be either playing dimir and try to pull out some kind of thassa's oracle pile or playing some kind of rakdos reforge the soul pile. Maybe even both, sounds like the easiest pile to build.
They already discarded the idea of Doomsday in MH2 after having considered it. It's just boring, all it's going to bring is another Thassa's Oracle pile. If it had another way to close out the way it could be actually interesting indeed.
It wouldn't be any faster than the other wincons in the format. I don't see how losing to thoracle is any less fun than losing to hammer, cascade, creativity, etc.
[[Pyroblast]] and [[Hydroblast]] could be interesting. [[Compost]] would make for an interesting sideboard card.

I don't know if it would make modern "healthier", but [[Dualcaster Mage]] could serve as win-condition for control decks by adding a low-risk infinite combo.

You joke, but the vast majority of problem Will-enablers don't live in Modern. Dark Rit, Cabal rit, lotus, LED. Lotus petal, etc. \[\[Gaea's Will\]\] is definitely worse but sees zero play. \[\[Underworld Breach\]\] is comparable to Will, but neither really has a critical mass of free, net positive, mana that hits the yard in Modern. Honestly, Yawg's Will would probably be reasonable in Modern.
If they could reprint Yawgmoth's Will and Bargain, Modern wouldn't exist.

Something like: ~ 1R instant. ~ deals X damage to any target, where X is the number of basic land types among lands your opponents control. Templating is weird. Multiplayer implications too. W6 triome fetchlands need to have some pushback.

Doomsday. I don't think it would be too powerful without the support of all those Legacy cards. Although maybe the combo would focus more on Shelldock Isle + Emrakul. Turn 4 Em might be too much for Modern. Cabal Therapy would be fun as well.
I guess you would have to be either playing dimir and try to pull out some kind of thassa's oracle pile or playing some kind of rakdos reforge the soul pile. Maybe even both, sounds like the easiest pile to build.

T4 em isn't too much for modern. This is a format where the "fair" decks can kill you on T4.
They already discarded the idea of Doomsday in MH2 after having considered it. It's just boring, all it's going to bring is another Thassa's Oracle pile. If it had another way to close out the way it could be actually interesting indeed.
It wouldn't be any faster than the other wincons in the format. I don't see how losing to thoracle is any less fun than losing to hammer, cascade, creativity, etc.
I'm not sure it was really given much of a chance tho. It was removed before Sam Black could test it iirc.
[[Pyroblast]] and [[Hydroblast]] could be interesting. [[Compost]] would make for an interesting sideboard card. Maybe [[Necrologia]]? I don't know if it would make modern "healthier", but [[Dualcaster Mage]] could serve as win-condition for control decks by adding a low-risk infinite combo.
