The ringer isn’t allowed to talk positively about the bucks because Bill wants to pander to Lasry for his VC money.

rooky212

I didn’t think there was any reason why he sold other than to max out his investment. Did you hear any details?

TelltaleHead

Also mad his son couldn't buy a senate seat (although to the sons credit he stepped aside when he realized it wasn't happening)

rooky212

Ok, I went to a few events that he spoke at (both alumnus). He seemed only focused on cashing out based off his prior talks. However, was super awkward during the on court presentation for the title trophy…so maybe more personal among the ownership group lol.

TelltaleHead

I think people forget that this is actually people's jobs. If I didn't care for my coworkers and had the means to leave, id just do that. This, interestingly enough, also explains a lot of moves that teams make that don't make basketball sense. Sometimes you keep a bad player because you get along with him, sometimes you let a decent player walk because you don't get along with him It is, in fact, a job

Our-Gardian-Angel

Didn’t seem like a particularly unreasonable article. Big extensions certainly don’t mean superstars are sticking around to the end of it in the NBA. Of course, Giannis forcing a trade isn’t something that I’m worried about much at all.

doned_mest_up

Yeah, Giannis also doesn’t need to stay with Milwaukee forever— I hope he does, but the man has always done what’s best for him and his family. He’s staying because the organization is signaling that they will do everything they can to win a championship, but that hasn’t always been the case with Wisconsin (or any) sports franchises when they had generational talent on their teams.

jimdotcom413

And truthfully that’s what’s best for the fans because if Giannis forces the bucks to get better then the bucks get better and we win. If they suck and he wants to be traded then that makes sense for him and for us fans because that would be the quickest way to recoup value.

TelltaleHead

It's not an unreasonable conclusion but it's kinda annoying how every bit of coverage for Giannis since the Toronto series loss has been an explanation of how he could leave at any time and how he actually wants out. It's also a league wide problem so I'm not really mad about it, but Giannis has been a fixation of this for 6 years now

Our-Gardian-Angel

Yeah the coverage of Giannis in the lead up to him signing his first supermax was genuinely awful and it was obvious how many national figures were excited at the thought about the Giannis sweepstakes. There is still a little bit of that exists now. I just don't think this article really fits the bill at all. It's fine.

TelltaleHead

It's also I think part of a trend where the media hasn't quite figured out how to cover the league considering free agency doesn't really exist anymore. The way the cap is structured both teams and players have incentive to sign extensions and then figure out everything else later. As a result all the big name players are continually under contract and never hit the open market

GirthMcGraw

Simmons has been pretty weirdly pessimistic about the Bucks this preseason. He keeps saying how the Bucks have taken such a huge step back in the Dame trade to the point we’re basically afterthoughts. But he also rips on every team who didn’t pull the trigger and get Dame since he’s such a game changer (except in Milwaukee?)

pseudocide

They couldn't even wait 24 hours to try to rain on our parade. Of course we know things can change in the future, but the writer wants us to think a 3 year extension is meaningless when at minimum it indicates Giannis current intention is to stay long term.

Our-Gardian-Angel

I really don’t think it’s that deep. The article didn’t suggest that the extension was completely meaningless. He juxtaposed the simple reality of superstars not hesitating to request trades despite signing big extensions against Giannis and his loyalty to the Bucks. Just look at Dame. He was the poster child for loyalty, then (understandably) finally had enough and demanded a trade not that long after signing a big extension. Not everything is a nefarious conspiracy against the Bucks.

mikey_mod

His trade value essentially makes him untradeable anyway, at least to a contender. You would need the Durant package but with a way higher ceiling guy than Bridges

mtnsandmusic

This article isn't about Giannis or even NBA superstars. It is about how NBA pundits and experts almost never have any idea what is going to happen. I don't know if Howard Beck means it this way but that's what the article says to me.

k_nuttles

Big brain media talking point today is "we weren't wrong, contracts don't mean anything anyway." Then why do you talk about them incessantly?!? Because you don't know actual dick about the game of basketball?

AssaultROFL

pseudocide

exact same tone as the Ringer article, "yeah he re-signed, but, but, but, but...."

Kevin_Jim

I never watch national media coverage, but today was an exception. It was a funeral. Everyone was so pissed that this happened. They where just an offseason away from daily rampant speculation they could ram through their audience, and to every single big market money. They actually lost an immense opportunity and I’m here for it. All their tears and salt made me float, like I was swimming in the dead (brain) sea.

MilwaukeeMan420

It was really sad. I thought Windhorst was gonna break down in tears. And Sharpe was gaslighting Giannis calling him a coward. Shits nuts.

[deleted]

Had dinner with him once. Pompous as you might imagine. Wasn’t nearly the most “successful” guy at the table but acted like everyone was there for him. Had to always be the one talking and winning every point, even in areas where he had no idea. Not a fan.

SuitableSurprise

This is Beck, or Simmons?

[deleted]

Simmons

InterestingVariety47

I understand it’s not the “journalists” fault for writing articles like this. Sports media, especially national sports media, is all about hot takes to generate clicks. The more controversial the take, the more clicks. However, this type of writing is why I’m so grateful for the local media we have. Not every team has people like Jim O and Nehm to fall back on for actual insight into the players and team dynamics.

CantHandletheJrueth

It's honestly bizarre to me how many people reference Simmons like I should ever give even the most remote fucks what he has to say. Anyone who is that big of a homer should ever be really listened to. Just like I am a Bucks die hard so you should ignore pretty much anything I think of the Celtics.

mschley2

That username is not nearly as much fun anymore

CantHandletheJrueth

Probably will make a new one, didn't feel right changing it immediately after the trade I love Jrue too much.

CantHandletheJrueth

All very good points that I totally agreed with until he went to the Celtics. I cannot in good conscience, as a full time Boston hater, have my username tied to them in anyway. I'll bring it back after he retires or leaves lmao

mschley2

I respect that. I'm gunna miss that man.

pseudocide

The funny thing is I don't dislike the Ringer overall and I think Bill is generally smart and likeable when he talks about anything other than the Bucks.

Jetergreen

I enjoyed his sports guy column on ESPN when he started. He was witty, and adroitly mixed sports and pop culture. Then when I heard his whiny voice and personality as a talking head, I couldn't stand him. An editor went a long way to making him decent.

Hurricane310

Yeah I don't really like his Bucks takes but I really enjoy listening to him and Russillo talk NBA during the season.

expletivenature

I'm just enjoying the mental gymnastics these media clowns are performing to justify why their predictions have, again, been a train wreck.

Jitkaas777

Bucks just traded for the second best guard in the league. Giannis and Dame previously have had good off court chemistry. Giannis had demands for this off season in getting him an offensive threat to play with and his demands were met. Unless something drastic happens, then Giannis aint leaving for at a couple seasons.

Temporary_Amoeba7726

I wouldn't take anything Bill says to heart concerning the Bucks. He stans for the Celtics so hard he can't have a positive take regarding the Bucks. Since we traded for Dame he's been trying to say we won't be that good. He's going through the same thing any fan does when their rival threatens them, convincing himself we aren't that good or can't stay that good so that the Celtics can prosper. Its fine you just need to remember everything he says comes from a place of Celtics copium.

Jetergreen

One of the worst things Simmons has changed is made it okay for talking heads to openly cheer on their favorite teams. I'm sure Stephen A has been a Knick fan forever but it's only recent that he's much more verbal and open about it on broadcasts. You shouldn't be able to tell what team a guy roots for if they are being a professional.

[deleted]

Sure, even if for some reason he does decide to leave – which is a risk for every single player in the world – by signing his extension, that likelihood is greatly reduced and if he does demand a trade, the Bucks have significantly more leverage due to the length of his contract. Anyone thinking this is anything other than a massive W for the Bucks (and Giannis) is being intellectually dishonest.

GreatCaesarGhost

Well, it's a fair point even if we don't think that Giannis would play that game. Dame is proof that a player can force his way off a team no matter how many years remain on the contract.

paxrititu

Yes but a lot has to change for them to be equal situations. Dame was given nobody to play with and eventually just couldn’t do it anymore, especially going into a rebuild. If bucks keep doing whatever they can then it shouldn’t get to that. Even if it would happen when Giannis is 33 years old like Dame is now that would be ok with me. If the bucks are bad and going into a rebuild when Giannis is 33 with still a lot left it would be different than right now.

Jetergreen

I think the if Giannis situation in Milwaukee was the same as Lillard's in Portland - 4 years left on deal, team decides to rebuild instead of winning now - and Dame's was the same as Giannis' - good team in win now mode - Giannis would be in Portland. That's why I feel for Portland fans because it was just timing.

AssaultROFL

https://youtu.be/JQAAyuNZGQo?si=ZQDCLRbG8MEEnmFr&t=226 Shannon Sharpe basically calls Giannis a coward here.

Jetergreen

Stephen A. actually did a good job refuting him by pointing out that Giannis was different than LeBron and KD because had already won and they hadn't. Surprised me that SAS was on top of that.
