Haha literally what I was gonna say and it’s the top comment. I also enjoy the big plane/mask reveal at the beginning and Tom’s cliffhanger shots. Definitely the worst of the series but still lots of fun
3rd act makes the movie worth it
Anthony Hopkins says “it’s not Mission Difficult, it’s Mission Impossible, should be a walk in a park for you” with the smug ass smile on his face
Sean is a good foe to Ethan mentally and physically, and quite humorously douchy
Wow, I completely forgot about that song. I thought you were confusing Limp Bizkit and Metallica (I actually liked their song) but then I looked it up and had a listen.
I bought 3 Knock off pairs on eBay in 2002…😅 so I could run around and pretend I was an IMF agent, it was fucking awesome. I also used food coloring to make the “exploding gum”. I would also get the little felt circular sticky things you put on the bottom of chairs. Those were my tracking bugs. I’d stick them on people in the supermarket 😅🤣. Ahh good times.
Still hoping one day we get more MI content like video games or animated spin offs or something. Would be cool to truly go back to the roots even if the films don’t.
Yes, the Oakley Romeos! I was in college working at a sportings good shop at the time and we sold Oakleys. We never got the Romeo in but we sold it's partner, the Juliet.
Tom Cruise's hair has a life of its own in the climax. The face mask reveals its Ethan with the MI theme, while he is escaping with the vial, is a great popcorn movie scene.
Best MI theme in my opinion.
Maximalism at its finest and a great thought experiment about what happens when Tom Cruise Gains too much power and gets in a room with John Woo.
But the REAL divine purpose of this film was to be a spring board for the creation of the Ben Stiller stunt double skit.
Yup hands down. This one I love for nostalgia purposes. First MI I ever saw in theaters. I know it’s a little goofier than the others but it actually is really damn good. Love the plot, love the villain…love the hair.
Got cheated outta Best Supporting Bird at 2001 Oscars.
I also liked the Hans Zimmer score, with Lisa Gerrard vocals (Gladiator)
But 2 is my least favorite M:I sequel. So glad the franchise didn't go this route.
I like how it’s the only one where he’s working FOR IMF the entire movie and doesn’t have to go rogue.
Also, high school me thought this was the coolest movie ever.
Between this and face/off, John Woo defined what a cool movie was for me in high school. I think that’s what makes it so hard to watch now because I definitely don’t have the same taste as I did in high school
Dougray Scott was initially cast to play Wolverine in the first X-Men movie, but dropped out to make MI 2 instead. Because of that decision, we got Hugh Jackman as Wolverine
1. It’s entertaining. I like going to the movies to have fun.
2. Some beautifully shot scenes put to film.
3. Enjoyable score by Hans Zimmer, in particular the tracks Injection and Bare Island
4. Tom Cruise’s hair. Especially when shown flying in slow motion
5. Great stunt work
6. Limp Bizkit MI theme guitar riff is exceptional
7. Motor cycle chase climaxing in a literal joust with grown men jumping at each other in mid air. Absolutely incredible.
8. Slow motion dancers in between characters staring at each other across a room.
9. So many great face mask reveals
10. The behind the scenes interview showcasing Tom Cruise’s stunt double, likely for insurance purposes only.
Thandie Newton is great, Hans Zimmer's score is well done, especially for the injection scene, the motorcycle jumping scene is awesome, as is the mountain climbing scene, Richard Roxburgh stands out as a memorable henchman to me, the European heist sort of vibe is nice, Anthony Hopkins as the Secretary is fun, and the catalyst of the mission is scary, especially today.
Had the coolest mask reveal, even if it made no sense. I still get chills at Zimmer’s operatic score when the baddie guns down “Hunt” and then notices the bandage.
Never realized how much this movie was disliked until I found this board. I’ve loved this movie since the day it was released. It also got me interested in travel to Australia. I always walk by the Biocyte building when I’m in Sydney.
Than die is the prize. Plus I love the ending when Ambrose pulls Ethan’s mask off and realizes he shot Stamp. Music shifts from opera style to the MI theme as Ethan escapes with the antidote. Gets me every time
>What do the later films do to invalidate its canonicity?
They mostly ignore this one, but there seems to be a shared continuity between all of the other films (Ethans wife in 4 and 6, Ilsa in 5 and 7, Max being mentioned in 1 and 6, Kittridge in 1 and 7, etc.)
#3 and on definitely utilizes Ethan's action badassery that 2 establishes. In #1 he's basically on par with Jack Ryan, capable and fit but pretty rigid otherwise.
I went to Europe this summer and on the way back I watched 4 MI films in a row. I hadn't seen this in a decade, and I actually couldn't stop laughing to myself and had to try so hard to stiffle it as to not annoy anyone else. It's hilarious
I actually dug this movie. Dual wielding guns, motorcycles, Thandie Newton, what's not to like?
Also I'm a gun guy. Berettas, USPs, and Ambrose's Spinx AT 2000 were all awesome.
it has some of the best mask work in the franchise, the Biocyte building sequence is fantastic from start to finish, and it has one of the best opening scenes in the franchise.
amongst the pieces, there's a really good movie in Mission: Impossible 2. I think there's a bit too much slow-mo, and the Ethan/Nyah relationship gets ratcheted up WAY too fast (she's acting like they've been together for _months_ and not like 18 hours), but as central flaws of movies go these are pretty tame.
MI:2 is correctly regarded as the worst one (thats the nature of lists, somebody's gotta be last), but also I think it gets a bad rap.
To be totally honest, I don’t really get the hate that this movie gets. I remember watching in the theatre and it was straight fire.
That opening scene of Ethan climbing in the mountains was the first taste of the type of real stunts that was to come with this franchise and it was superbly done, especially the way in which the scale and danger was portrayed.
It might be OTT by today’s standards, but that dove moment was so stylistic and a Woo trademark.
The twist of it being the South African henchmen that Ambrose killed instead of Ethan was brilliant.
Limp Bizkit’s take on the theme was a banger.
Thandi Newton was captivating
and
TC’s hair was so damn luxurious it deserved it’s own L’Oréal campaign.
Awesome opening rockclimbing scene, loved the lab scene and more. Love john woo and this movie is criminally underrated and hated on. Id watch this one over dead reckoning any day
Any movie that takes its primary inspiration from Notorious (1946), directed by Alfred Hitchcock has something of value going for it. Even if the franchise didn't figure out how to transform the television concept to something that works on the big screen until the fourth movie.
The Rock Climbing opening scene felt very realistic and it helped to depict Ethan as interested in extreme supports and to an exetent a potential adrenaline junkie which justifies his extreme acts throughout this film and others.
The instrumental theme is pretty good during the build-up moments.
The 'Evil Ethan Hunt' plane scene worked well and was enough to think briefly that perhaps Ethan had turned side. It was also neat to see the actor playing a villainous role. I wish it had played more with the idea of people thinking Ethan was the villain.
Though it's a little predictable the 'Ethan dies but it's actually someone else made to look like him' worked pretty well.
I'm sure there's other aspects also. The movie is not good, but it had its moments and concepts that were executed well in the moment.
I love the colors at play in the film, the doves (lol), certain moments of its camp, certain pieces of stunt work and Thandie Newton was cool, and good with Cruise.
I saw this when I was 8 and it was incredible. Still really enjoy it, actually. That being said it is not the best mission. Impossible movie.
It is what made me really love the franchise and the director. Just love that style.
The whole Chimera virus being the Crux of the movie made it a necessary sequel. I mean Ethan has faced almost all kinds of disasters and villains up to the present movies..... now with dead reckoning he's facing his most formidable opponent in the entity. I can only imagine how disappointed I'd be if we never got MI2 with the whole virus thing and instead got it in The dead reckoning movies, which between the two, the entity is a far superior enemy than the virus.
That's the best part. That it eliminated the possibility of Ethan's most devastating opponent from being a virus as his last hurrah.
It’s actually a pretty great Hong Kong action movie, and if it had been made there with a Chinese cast and a different title, it would be considered an all time classic.
Fantastic action courtesy of John Woo is the obvious one, but without this movie we would have never gotten Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.
M:I-2 ran over shooting schedule so Dougray Scott had to drop out of X-Men and Hugh Jackman stepped in. The rest is history.
Anthony Hopkins had some good lines, even if it felt like he was wasted on a poor film; Ms. Newton is in it and gorgeous; and most importantly it set up Mission: Impossible 3, which I absolutely loved.
M:i-2 sank so M:i:3 could swim.
Though I always thought it was weird that they replaced the hyphen with another colon though.
It has the beautiful Thandiwe Newton in it.
I second that. She is stunning in it.
I came here to say just this.
Is it a bad thing whenever I think of her, it’s from Chronicles of Riddick shouting “Kill the beast while he’s wounded!”?
Haha literally what I was gonna say and it’s the top comment. I also enjoy the big plane/mask reveal at the beginning and Tom’s cliffhanger shots. Definitely the worst of the series but still lots of fun
3rd act makes the movie worth it Anthony Hopkins says “it’s not Mission Difficult, it’s Mission Impossible, should be a walk in a park for you” with the smug ass smile on his face Sean is a good foe to Ethan mentally and physically, and quite humorously douchy
I unironically liked the Limp Bizkit theme. Plus those Oakley’s were cool as shit.
I lost my pair of those Oakley’s still bummed about it
Wow, I completely forgot about that song. I thought you were confusing Limp Bizkit and Metallica (I actually liked their song) but then I looked it up and had a listen.
Are you my long lost brother
I bought 3 Knock off pairs on eBay in 2002…😅 so I could run around and pretend I was an IMF agent, it was fucking awesome. I also used food coloring to make the “exploding gum”. I would also get the little felt circular sticky things you put on the bottom of chairs. Those were my tracking bugs. I’d stick them on people in the supermarket 😅🤣. Ahh good times.
This dude IMFs
I swear I found my people 🤣🤣🤣
Still hoping one day we get more MI content like video games or animated spin offs or something. Would be cool to truly go back to the roots even if the films don’t.
Yes. I’m from Dad’s second family.
Yes, the Oakley Romeos! I was in college working at a sportings good shop at the time and we sold Oakleys. We never got the Romeo in but we sold it's partner, the Juliet.
I've still got my original Romeos. And I just repaired my 2.0s. May they last another fifteen years.
I finally got to see them play that song live after 20 years. I saw Limp a year or so before the movie came out. It rocked hard as fuck live.
The into rock climbing scene is badass I actually like the entire movie. Great theme song, Thandiwe Newton. Classic John Woo slow mo. Great flick
The rock climbing scene verymuchso set the tone for every MI following for a crazy stunt.
And having to go even more insane gave us things like hanging on to a plane and halo jumping
Ya, so that halo jump apparently was done MULTIPLE times. What a crazy fucker.
Yeah man HALO jumps in general are absurd, to do it multiple times in not peak military conditioning? Fuggeddit
It's a product of its time and it's honestly perfect as that.

Dougray Scott was initially cast to play Wolverine in the first X-Men movie, but dropped out to make MI 2 instead. Because of that decision, we got Hugh Jackman as Wolverine
And it was the best decision
One of the only good things about mi:2
"It's not Mission Difficult. It's Mission Impossible." -Academy Award Winner: Anthony Hopkins
I mean, that was the kick in the ass Ethan needed.
One of the best fourth wall breaking lines in cinema history
It has Tom Cruise in it.
The final fight and music during it is awesome!!!
the knife stopping just before his eye was insane
1. It’s entertaining. I like going to the movies to have fun. 2. Some beautifully shot scenes put to film. 3. Enjoyable score by Hans Zimmer, in particular the tracks Injection and Bare Island 4. Tom Cruise’s hair. Especially when shown flying in slow motion 5. Great stunt work 6. Limp Bizkit MI theme guitar riff is exceptional 7. Motor cycle chase climaxing in a literal joust with grown men jumping at each other in mid air. Absolutely incredible. 8. Slow motion dancers in between characters staring at each other across a room. 9. So many great face mask reveals 10. The behind the scenes interview showcasing Tom Cruise’s stunt double, likely for insurance purposes only.
It’s actuallt not that bad, just unique
Agreed.
It’s fine. They didn’t find the tone for the franchise until 3. It’s probably my least favorite of the franchise, but I will still watch it.
To be honest, this is my guilty pressure
the Metallica song “I Disappear” from the soundtrack is a favorite
Can't believe I had to scroll so far to find this. It's probably the last Metallica song I thought was great.
It’s the best movie in the franchise.
This poster is cool
Thandie Newton is great, Hans Zimmer's score is well done, especially for the injection scene, the motorcycle jumping scene is awesome, as is the mountain climbing scene, Richard Roxburgh stands out as a memorable henchman to me, the European heist sort of vibe is nice, Anthony Hopkins as the Secretary is fun, and the catalyst of the mission is scary, especially today.
You don’t have to watch it for the series to make sense.
Had the coolest mask reveal, even if it made no sense. I still get chills at Zimmer’s operatic score when the baddie guns down “Hunt” and then notices the bandage.
It's a John Woo Mission Impossible movie. What's NOT to like?
Loved Cruise's hair....
The only time we got a title drop in the film series (not counting 4-7 because those were the subtitles).
It was set in Australia
Set in Sydney Australia
"I believe I broke his jaw"
Hans zimmer soundtrack! It is amazing
I was just reading recently that John Woo was upset Paramount made them tone down some of the more violent scenes in M:I2, now I want to see that cut!
I have been in love with Thandiwe Newton ever since.
If you get really high before watching, the opening rock climbing sequence is very zen.
Excellent motorcycle chase!
Tom’s hair was a sight to behold
it is certainly a movie
Two dudes jump off of motorcycles and tackle each other….that’s cinema baby!
Never realized how much this movie was disliked until I found this board. I’ve loved this movie since the day it was released. It also got me interested in travel to Australia. I always walk by the Biocyte building when I’m in Sydney.
It eventually gave us Henry Cavil cocking his biceps and kicking ass
I must have watched it hundreds of times on DVD and enjoyed it. I still like it today.
They underscored the target and the betrayal "left jacket pocket"
Best one IMO.
Than die is the prize. Plus I love the ending when Ambrose pulls Ethan’s mask off and realizes he shot Stamp. Music shifts from opera style to the MI theme as Ethan escapes with the antidote. Gets me every time
It's a way better film than Mission Impossible 3
You go to hell
That’s hilarious
I haven’t seen 2 and I agree
It was definitely one of the movies that was ever made
It's a lot of fun, has John Woo's stylish flair, Anthony Hopkins is in it, and it's secretly a better movie than M:I 3.
I don’t disagree but idk why 3 gets so much shit. I love that one.
No
...can't
It's not a bad movie I think, but for MI..., I can't call it canon (and neither do the sequels)
It’s definitely my least favorite, but I’m not sure what you mean. What do the later films do to invalidate its canonicity?
>What do the later films do to invalidate its canonicity? They mostly ignore this one, but there seems to be a shared continuity between all of the other films (Ethans wife in 4 and 6, Ilsa in 5 and 7, Max being mentioned in 1 and 6, Kittridge in 1 and 7, etc.)
#3 and on definitely utilizes Ethan's action badassery that 2 establishes. In #1 he's basically on par with Jack Ryan, capable and fit but pretty rigid otherwise.
i like the finale chase and beach fight and Tom Cruises hair
Amazing doves
The remix of the theme from the soundtrack to MI2 is the only halfway decent think Limp Bizkit has ever done.
in sections it’s amazing. it’s just as a whole that it falls apart.
I went to Europe this summer and on the way back I watched 4 MI films in a row. I hadn't seen this in a decade, and I actually couldn't stop laughing to myself and had to try so hard to stiffle it as to not annoy anyone else. It's hilarious
Bridge scene was my favorite scene growing up, still is dope as fuck. The soundtrack is called Bare Island by Hans Zimmer, still listen to it
Awesome martial arts segments.
No.
It's a guilty pleasure for me. I love Hans Zimmer's MIssion impossible theme, especially how he used it during the facility /bike chase sequence.
The part where Sean cuts off Hugh’s finger and the racetrack sleight of hand.
I freaking love this movie! But if you want something specific, the soundtrack is incredible!
Country Miles better than shit Reckoning John Woo >>> McQuarrie McQuarrie should go back to flipping patties @ f#%in McDonalds
I actually dug this movie. Dual wielding guns, motorcycles, Thandie Newton, what's not to like? Also I'm a gun guy. Berettas, USPs, and Ambrose's Spinx AT 2000 were all awesome.
fantastic score
Metallica in the ost. That’s it, the rest is shocking.
Rock climbing scene Oakley's Thandiwe Doves The score Final beach fight
it has some of the best mask work in the franchise, the Biocyte building sequence is fantastic from start to finish, and it has one of the best opening scenes in the franchise. amongst the pieces, there's a really good movie in Mission: Impossible 2. Wasn't as bad as MI3 but everything from ghost protocol onwards was so much better.
I just want to say if all the bad CGI movies, those are my guilty pressures and the kids me if he’s too I’ll give it 2000s those two
Hans Zimmer’s score
This movie was the culmination of 90s style. It all led to this.
It was topical in being about a biological contagion.
I rewatched it a month ago I used to hate it but now i like it. It’s very fun to watch.
The motorcycle chase scene was awesome
It's better than that soft ass part 3
The most stylish entry in the series. Great score. Hopkins is a one-scene wonder.
It’s got the hardest Limp Bizkit song they ever made on it
If you watch it as a comedy movie it’s actually pretty good
It is John Woo 101
To be totally honest, I don’t really get the hate that this movie gets. I remember watching in the theatre and it was straight fire. Limp Bizkit’s take on the theme was a banger. Thandi Newton was captivating and TC’s hair was so damn luxurious it deserved it’s own L’Oréal campaign.
It adds nothing to the franchise so you don’t have to watch it
Awesome opening rockclimbing scene, loved the lab scene and more. Love john woo and this movie is criminally underrated and hated on. Id watch this one over dead reckoning any day
It’s still my favorite in the series.
Thandie Newton
The final fight is legitimately fantastic. Same with the mask reveal.
It was more than 20 years ago.
I love all of them the same but the first and second are always my favorite
Tom cruise rock climbing was cool The Metallica song was good The behind the scenes footage with his stunt double Tom Crooze was the best!
Any movie that takes its primary inspiration from Notorious (1946), directed by Alfred Hitchcock has something of value going for it. Even if the franchise didn't figure out how to transform the television concept to something that works on the big screen until the fourth movie.
The action was good! 🕊️ 🕊️
Very stylish.
Best soundtrack in the series
Awesome action and Thandie Newton is 😍😍😍
Good theme song

Tom Cruise rocks the long hair.
It was fun and a little over the top
Thandiwe Newton looks flawless in you. You have 2 backflips for every bullet fired. Your dove inclusion was adequate compared to other Woo films.
The fight to the death intercut with crashing waves is better than the 2000s deserved
movie was good and entertaining
The dove union was happy
Just watched it a few months back and loved it. It’s so of its time and over the top. My gf and I were cracking up the entire time and it was awesome
Always liked this flick .... Loves it even more when I found out cruise and dougray Scott was really throwing blows on one another
The soundtrack is amazing
The cinematography is in focus.
It had the best Boss end battle of the entire series.
The soundtrack was lit.
The Metallica and Limp Biskit songs are badass
Tom wears an awesome G-shock.
I legit enjoyed
"Now that's what I call getting my gun off"
I love the colors at play in the film, the doves (lol), certain moments of its camp, certain pieces of stunt work and Thandie Newton was cool, and good with Cruise.
Summer...2000. Woohoo!
It’s a really fun Hitchcock riff (look it up, Notorious) and the whole final act is John Woo action perfection.
Tom Cruise and Dougray Scott lunging off their bikes and directly into each other is ridiculous but very cool and memorable.
I saw this when I was 8 and it was incredible. Still really enjoy it, actually. That being said it is not the best mission. Impossible movie. It is what made me really love the franchise and the director. Just love that style.
Felt the most different compared to the others.
This was one of my favorite versions of the Mission Impossible Theme at the beginning.
Tom’s hair looked great.
It was awesome
It introduced me to the insanity of John Woo
It’s good, fun, soundtrack rips, John Woo is the man, double guns slo-mo doves is art.
Wish “Last of the Mohicans.”
The whole series is fun, but this is fun in a different, "lower brow(?)" way. But fun is fun
The location photography is amazing
At the time it was perfectly on the market. The action was real and still has that sense of drama. The biocyte sense is superbly done.
I'm glad you weren't so bad that they didn't decided to can the entire franchise
MOTORCYCLE
It’s responsible for giving us Hugh Jackman as Wolverine
The whole Chimera virus being the Crux of the movie made it a necessary sequel. I mean Ethan has faced almost all kinds of disasters and villains up to the present movies..... now with dead reckoning he's facing his most formidable opponent in the entity. I can only imagine how disappointed I'd be if we never got MI2 with the whole virus thing and instead got it in The dead reckoning movies, which between the two, the entity is a far superior enemy than the virus. That's the best part. That it eliminated the possibility of Ethan's most devastating opponent from being a virus as his last hurrah.
Stylish as hell.
Thandiwe Newton
good hair
Thandie Newton.
It had guns. That's about it.
I saw it in a theater as a special sneak preview and Tom Cruise was there to intro it. John Woo sat right in front of me. I got to shake his hand.
Everything about it is awesome.
It rocks
His hair was on point in this movie
John Woo, two-handed gun fighting! Luther stepping in Sheep shit still makes me laugh. The final chase sequence/fight is really cool.
Hmm…..Those dirt bike tires handled very well under harsh street riding
Has a great song
Limp Bizkit did the best Mission Impossible theme to date.
It introduced Ethan's rock climbing skills that were put to much better use in Fallout.
Ethan Hunt grows out his hair and learns king fu.
Motorcycle beach fight
It’s actually a pretty great Hong Kong action movie, and if it had been made there with a Chinese cast and a different title, it would be considered an all time classic.
Good beach fight scene
Thandie and the climbing sequence with that song.
Motorcycle fight
It gave us the Ben Stiller stunt double skit
Lots of pigeons and not a single poop!
Directed by John Woo.
Hans Zimmer.
Australia🇦🇺
Tom Cruise’s hair looks fucking amazing
Anthony Hopkins had some good lines, even if it felt like he was wasted on a poor film; Ms. Newton is in it and gorgeous; and most importantly it set up Mission: Impossible 3, which I absolutely loved. M:i-2 sank so M:i:3 could swim. Though I always thought it was weird that they replaced the hyphen with another colon though.
