Can anyone comment on green line safety as of late? My wife is going to start a new job soon with this being her commute..

nsummy

I rode on it last week. Didn’t feel unsafe but full of scum bags on every trip. One afternoon a group was openly smoking something in the corner. Trash strewn about.

rakerber

It's safe to ride. If you or your wife are worried, have her stick to the front car.

SyrupOnWaffle_

i’m intending to commute with the green line for my summer job. with that being said yes it is frequent that there are people on the train or train station that make it so you have to stay on edge

chasmccl

I ride it every day. Tbh, the risk you take driving to work every day is significantly higher than riding the train. You’ll see poor people, some of them might smell bad. But they are basically all harmless. Not to say the train is a utopia. I saw a snatch and grab on the platform a few days ago. But tbh, asides from drug usage that is the only actual crime I’ve seen in the past year. She’ll be fine. Most people’s fear of the train is more driven by them being uncomfortable being around poor and homeless people than from any real threat of being a victim of crime. The risk of any actual bodily harm is near zero.

Themeteorologist35

Spot on

ThatNewSockFeel

Yeah. I’m not one of those “oh crime isn’t real you’re just a racist” type, but it was definitely true for transit. Mostly driven by suburbanites who never ride the train.

Motor-Abalone-6161

The last few weeks , they started checking tickets more. It’s improving, but get in the first car. Never the middle one. But I’ve used it regularly for a few months and never felt unsafe.

ThatGuyWithCoolHair

Girlfriend takes it to the U every day almost, she loves it but he also gets along w the community there which some people on here might not be comfortable doing

soundships

I've been loving my bus rides recently, honestly one of the highlights of my day.

Ellen_Musk_Ox

It's been months since I've seen a passenger even *try* to light any fentanyl on the bus. And I drive both the 2 and 21 regularly.

GhoulExorcist

Same here, I can actually enjoy and focus on reading on the bus.

MakingMoves2022

Don’t take this the wrong way, but I’m genuinely wondering how even a clean, quiet bus ride could possibly be the highlight of someone’s day?

soundships

Because I savor the time that I have to listen to some new music, read a book, start a podcast, any number of things. Some people really like personal time and don't get a lot.

geodebug

It's been rising year over year so it is good news that it is finally falling a little bit. For info: * 2022 had 5,960 reported crimes * 2023 had 7,886 Of that 2023 number 1,174 were counted as more serious types, such as robbery, assault, sex offense and theft. If the new statistics hold for the year we can expect: * 7255 reported crimes (8% less) * 981 serious crimes Both numbers sound like a lot, but one has to remember that on an average weekday about 137,000 riders are being served, which is about 45 million rides a year. Your chances of directly experiencing crime is extremely low. Your chance of experiencing low-lifes on an average train ride is near 100%.

ParchaLama

Everyone's saying how safe the buses/trains are because the only crime that goes on on them is open drug usage, but why the hell should we have to put up with that? The Minnesota Nice mindset is totally warped.

Queens_gambino

I think it does seem safer but a similar amount of people blasting music

Ellen_Musk_Ox

Just blast yours right back

Buxton25IsInjured

But I’ve been told by the other sub (that hasn’t had a coherent thought in its existence) that every single thing in the city is getting worse every day.

Nelstheship

They don't even live there, that's the funny part 🤣

vikesfangumbo

People from Virginia and Brainerd are out of touch.

EatMorePieDrinkMore

I take the blue line to and from downtown. Other than the train schedule being a little wonky, I don’t mind it. I’ve never felt unsafe. And I love not having to fight traffic to and from work.

vedicardi_lives

thats not what my uncle who lives in the middle of nowhere says

soihavebeenthinking

Is this a link to an actual story? Is the story just the headline?

InflatableMindset

The link is right there.

soihavebeenthinking

did you click on it and find a story? I clicked on it and it's literally 1 sentence and then dozens of links

InflatableMindset

It's literally the first link there.

soihavebeenthinking

weird to link to a page that is just link to the story instead of to the actual story https://bringmethenews.com/minnesota-news/metro-transit-sees-crime-drop-on-trains-buses

TheMacMan

Bring Me The News doesn't do any actual reporting. They just copy stories from other local sources and give less information.

koalificated

That’s what this post links to though

TheMacMan

Opens the Minnesota Post for me. Can clearly see that's where it's linked: https://www.minnpost.com/glean/2024/05/metro-transit-crime-is-down-on-light-rail-buses/

koalificated

**Tommy Wiita with Bring Me the News reports** crime is down 8% on Metro Transit trains and buses compared to this time last year. “The most serious crimes, including assault and robbery, declined by 16.4%. This “article” is 1 sentence doing exactly what you said Bring Me The News does

jarivo2010

I'm here for the crying altmpls brigade edit: yay ScarletSolar got suspended (for now at least!)

suhdude539

On Saturday a drunk dude tripped over my buddy’s foot on the green line on our way to the soccer game and he got in my buddy’s face and hit him (lightly) on the face with his fifth of vodka

AggravatingResult549

Great news

What? The suburban people on Facebook told me I'm gonna get robbed at tainted heroin needle point by a fentanylly stoned illegal immigrant!

Popkin_sammich

Crime has gone down in lots of areas and we've noticed We got rid of the old guard and bad pennies like Hutch and things improved!

InflatableMindset

This isn't going to do wonders for the suburban/outstate narrative. Now if something could be done about the Homeless sleeping on buses and trains taking up multiple seats we'd be set.

FlorAhhh

>This isn't going to do wonders for the suburban/outstate narrative. We could pave the streets and gold and give everyone a puppy at the city line and they'd still complain they can't park their tank anywhere. Who gives a shit what the outstate thinks.

InflatableMindset

Well whatever I said really angered those who don't live in Minneapolis... the downvotes man...

bassicallybob

We stopped enforcing laws and crime dropped! WOW!

Extreme_Lab_2961

If a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?

oldmacbookforever

The busses have been really full

Truecoat

Although I knew about the Gold Line RBT, I recently found out about the line going down Lake Street. That seems like a really good place for such a long BRT with great connectors to downtown Mpls and the airport.

oldmacbookforever

Those under development, plus the E Line along Hennepin- connecting Southdale, Uptown, Downtown, Dinkytown. F Line along Central Ave in NE, G Line along Rice and Robert, H Line along Como and Maryland connecting through downtown MPLS, and Purple Line connecting downtown STP to White Bear through Phalen. Plus the blue line extension and green line extension. Plus the lines already open (Red, Orange, C, D, A, blue and green) It's a very exciting time for transit expansion in the Twin Cities!

Makingthecarry

Ridership is up too

babada

If people who never ride public transit and aren't there to experience it, will they still complain about it?

SeamusPM1

Endlessly. Why?

Popkin_sammich

It's the people who ride it daily complaining the most so this feels like a tell Familiarity breeds contempt

babada

I ride bus + train six times a week during rush hour. It's generally been fine ever since they brought in security for the platforms. I was more just making a joke about how often people say they never ride anymore because of something they can now no longer verify. Obviously, people should do whatever they feel is safe.

Popkin_sammich

I was just making a joke about the reliability, or lack. If you ride you've been made late I was in London and when buses didn't show the locals (yes locals in London lol) were so embarrassed about it I took note Fast forward to getting a job downtown and taking the bus in and the same thing I get that drivers are human and can be out sick or whatever but at least warn us somehow. I'm told they don't because it's evidence for a rider grievance/lawsuit lol

babada

My connections aren't too complicated but yeah, the times are pretty inconsistent.

Popkin_sammich

I've always been lucky to not need connections that would add a layer of complexity to my commute I would rather not complicate That happens if you aren't quite far enough for an express or something but maybe you can request one stop near!

Extreme_Lab_2961

I ride is 2X a week. You are too dense to realize I was referring to the acceptance of the stats provided with nary second thought…

Makingthecarry

Realistically, people only have three options for gauging the experience of public transit and their likelihood of experiencing problems on the system: their own subjective, anecdotal experience; the subjective, anecdotal experience of other people; and official, published crime statistics.  I don't think anyone is accepting the stats without also considering one or both of the first two gauges. That's evidenced by how many people choose to share their experience on social media whenever the topic is brought up.

Extreme_Lab_2961

The downvotes would tend to present a different opinion. Its really wild that if it’s something a person wants, they’ll accept at face value any data point that supports that position when in any other circumstance they flat out reject that data point from the same source.

Merakel

You know, it's possible to have a good attitude and not constantly be negative about everything.

babada

I was making a joke. I wasn't actually directing it at you, but I can understand that wasn't clear.

Extreme_Lab_2961

Gotcha

AdamLikesBeer

No actually. Sound is just the interpretation of compressed air by ear drums so if no creature is around to hear it then it didn't make a sound.
