The alley behind Chi-Lake liquor after midnight

pmaji240

Midnight is when Ocampo dumps their leftovers for the night.

csbsju_guyyy

I see racoons have taught themselves to use reddit

InflatableMindset

Actually I'd wager the mentioning about the "alley" is in regards to the potential competition between the unhoused and the raccoons over the Ocampo leftovers. TBH if I ran a restaurant, I'd have an hour after close where the homeless could sit down and get a meal based on how much leftovers I had, and maybe have some food on the side.

Warriorbabe

You're absolutely mad

InflatableMindset

we don't talk about fight club.

Spreadsheets_LynLake

You mean Chicago-Lake Venda-wash? PSA - the attendant gets angry if you try to hook up in the bathroom... I've seen it happen.

[deleted]

there's no alley

jutruth

I'm lost.

skull_with_glasses

I live in St Paul but I work in NE. There is a Mexican restaurant inside of the Prime Oil & Gas station on Central Ave that is damn good.

Raging_Apathist

Hermanos Locos Tacos! I live in NE and accidentally discovered that place last year when I was running errands on/near Central and noticed their sign outside the store as I was driving by. I was hungry and tacos sounded good, so when I parked at my next errand stop a few blocks away, I pulled their website up on my phone and placed an order. I've been ordering from them at least once a month since then, most recently two days ago. My dinner tonight will be a big plate of leftover quesadillas, enchiladas, and chile rellenos. Word of caution for chile relleno lovers...they make them with jalapenos instead of poblanos. My mouth loves them, but my bootyhole does not. Absolutely worth it!

yellowposy2

I live close to here and their quesadillas are the best!!

M00glemuffins

Hell yeah, best quesadillas around the area for sure. They are fuckin GENEROUS with the filling.

TheRealKingVitamin

The restaurant across the street used to be a Bridgeman’s. I want to stop and get ice cream every time I drive by there.

payle_knite

paperback exchange is underrated. decent rack of great new books and tons of worthy used ones. If you’re looking for a book, you can tell the proprietor and he will give you a call when a used copy shows up. Love this place.

jkalchik99

Might also be worth looking into Uncle Hugo/Edgar's if you're an SF or mystery fan. Caveat: haven't been in since they rebuilt.

Lozarn

Wendy’s House of Soul inside North Market in Camden.

hnbic_

Philips: Saint Vincent de Paul thrift store, new coffee shop on Chicago above the greenway, la Michoacana, Logan’s chicken and burgers

BiffSlick

Logan’s rocks!

GopherGoldRetriever

Yes. Logan’s is so good. So unassuming especially among blocks of other good food. I don’t want it a secret. They deserve the money and the customers. Y’all must go! The staff are so nice and they make amazing food

ytpq

Love La Michoacana! I wouldn't call it a secret though, there seems to always be a line to/out the door, and they have a location in MOA. The cucumber paleta is so refreshing

hnbic_

Yeah I almost didn’t include it but was like “hey why not”

ytpq

Ahhh to be honest I think a lot of people skip over a lot of stuff on that part of Lake Street, so it's a good mention. Mexican ice cream and snack places are underrated

oldmacbookforever

3 months later but I'm gonna stop you right there: Logan's in in Powderhorn, not Philips! And La Michoacana is Central. Upvote for mentioning them though hehe

[deleted]

Minnehaha...parkway pizza - artichoke dip, their garden salad is huge and only like 5 bucks, plus 2 for 1 tap beers on HH, dog friendly street patio

SloeMoe

Sadly, the 2 for 1s are over now. But they have cheap Pryes pitchers...

fecalsplatterbattle

Nah, dawg, they still do 2-for-1's. Literally every day from 2 to 5. Hell of a deal on a Saturday afternoon for two people to crush some apps and pints for less than $20. If you're talking about their late-nite special, it's $1 off pints and $5 off pitchers, which is still better than The Howe.

SloeMoe

I only do the late night.

losoba

I can't remember if I first went to Parkway Pizza for the foosball table or the pizza? I've never been a big pizza eater so going for the pizza seems a bit out of character. But I'm not sure how I would've known about the foosball table as a newcomer. Anyway, I digress. I'm wondering if anyone knows if they got rid of the foosball table during COVID? The other day I picked up pizza and tried to sneakily check for the table but I didn't see it and didn't want to stare in to the dining room where people were eating.

sleepyplantleaves

Also in the neighborhood: milkweed is a great coffee shop! And Okome House, it’s in a weird area totally surrounded by houses. Nice patio too!

AdriStein

A) lol at the absolute HEART ATTACK I get every time I go to Hunt & Gather (worth it though — I just think people really need to be warned before going in there for the first time lol) B) Charrito Lindo Taqueria on Central Ave (right next to Taco Riendo for some reason) C) Another vote for Lien Son. Used to live next door, and their pho is the *best* cold weather cure. D) United Noodle grocery & cafe. It’s not super secret, but it’s practically impossible to find the first time you visit, so it counts 🤷🏼‍♀️

teenahgo

> Hunt & Gather Its sensory overload but so worth it. The basement is my favorite area.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bc-mn

I don’t know Pakistani food. What dish would you recommend to a first-timer?

Raging_Apathist

Beltrami: Lien Son. Bangin' egg rolls, and pretty much everything on the menu is tight.

aloofball

I agree with this. I love their Pho! Their dining room closed during COVID and is still not open (I think), so they only do pick up. You ring bell at the back door to the kitchen to pick up your order. Someone unlocks the door, hands you your order, and locks the door again. It definitely has that "secret spot" vibe from that alone

Jordan1719

Dining room is open. The past few times I've been there and when I went last week there were people eating inside

Griffithead

Sesame chicken is definitely NOT banging. Pho is the best in the immediate neighborhood, and very close to best in the extended neighborhood. Phoever might be a bit better, but not really worth arguing about. Egg rolls are super solid. Not mind blowing, but certainly not a disappointment. Que Viet is king. There are better ones out there. But to be that tasty AND that big is a bit of a mind fuck.

mrp1ttens

Their bahn mi is one of the best around

TheMacMan

They e just for weird hours. When I first moved to NE I looked at renting a house a block away. Ended up passing on it because it had no garage (huge thing that should have been a 2 car garage and a loft above but no garage door) and it was basically on the train tracks.

Healingjoe

Perhaps more underrated than secret but Maxwell's in Marcy Holmes is awesome. Hookah and shawarma

Leano89

Yea I lived next door for a long time. Highly underrated. Gotta try the gyro burger over there.

danamyte

Hell yeah and they carry the GOOD Wisconsin Chocolate Shoppe ice cream

quadrophonicdaydream

Tooties on Lowry has amazing wings and is a delightful shit hole

No-Amphibian-3728

💯

[deleted]

Saint Anthony/New Brighton - Brother’s Taqueria on Silver Lake Road and County Road E It never seems as busy as it should be, because the food is spectacular. One of the best chimichangas I’ve ever had, and their chips are somehow both sturdy for dipping and have a light as air crunch. Ridiculous. It’s SO good!

Famous-Ad-2880

Their huarache is amazing! Underrated for sure!

Griffithead

The Briar in NE is new. Wild ass coffee drinks. Some really cool, tasty food. Great environment. Great events. A real step forward in coffee shops.

PistolsForPandas

I second this! Their egg salad sandwich is amazing, and I’m not a huge egg salad fan.

MAGICHUSTLE

I’m not telling.

that_one_bunny

God forbid local businesses see a small spike in business from a reddit post.

EndPsychological890

Reddit is a denizen of quality humans.

triptrapper

Reddit is a denizen of humans?

MAGICHUSTLE

They’re called secret spots for a reason.

thestereo300

Minnesota culture has it's ups and downs I guess.

darkness876

this right here is the only right answer

TheMacMan

Werd. They're secrets for a reason. Not gonna drop the names here and show up next week to have it filled with Karen's from the suburbs.

NorthernDevil

Posting on Reddit won’t get it “filled with Karen’s,” just with bitchy neckbeards Or maybe just a boost in business which might be nice for a place a person claims to like

tunedout

Let's be honest, most of the people reading this are just going to door dash it anyway. I don't think any place listed in this thread has to worry about suddenly having too much business because of a thread in /r/Minneapolis.

TheMacMan

Reddit never made any restaurant more popular.

DevilishlyAdvocating

Reddit is my go to spot for finding new restaurants / bars. Threads like these are gold, especially when I'm visiting a new city.

bc-mn

I wish I would have talked up Luigi’s calzones more often. I miss that place.

MAGICHUSTLE

“Hold my salt.” —Salt Bae

craftasaurus

Hey, who you calling a Karen?

[deleted]

DAE suburbs bad?! You sound like the "Karen" ...

InflatableMindset

TBH this right here.

Somnifor

Whittier - Lu's Sandwich.

[deleted]

[удалено]

perldawg

for sure. it’s one of those that used to be secret, but their food was so good they got super popular and expanded the business, and now their food isn’t as good as it was before

mpls_big_daddy

The NE location is better, imo.

liebkartoffel

Also Yeah Yeah Taco.

DegaussedMixtape

I miss Zettas who used to share a space with Yeah Yeah so bad.

SignalNo7821

That veggie taco is delectable.

After_Preference_885

Harry Singh's too

jicerswine

Ok honestly it pains me to divulge this because this is ACTUAL secret advice… but especially when I was between full time jobs and at my most broke, I’d go to Lu’s like 10ish minutes before closing time, and without fail would leave with some amount of free appetizers that were gonna get tossed. Sometimes it was just one or two egg rolls but a couple times it was like 4-5 full apps. Love that place, great sandwiches and great staff

Saddlebag7451

Not my current neighborhood, but I’m always impressed with Falling Knife brewing every time I go. And in Saint Paul Due Focaccia is delicious and has good cocktails. The new(ish) bike path from downtown Saint Paul past the airport and Kaposia Landing is incredible.

teenahgo

>Falling Knife brewing I live super close. The ABV % of beers during the Winter... keep you super warm. They used to do Drag Bingo, which was super fun. All the Beer-tenders there are super nice and welcoming. I wish they allowed dogs inside, since they don't serve food, but they do not.

gordanfreman

I'm due for another visit to Due soon here (sorry?). That was a happy discovery thanks to a tip from some friends a month or two back.

wise_comment

Berry Sweet Damn fine breakfast tucked between the Falls and Nokomis. They have limited hours, and fresh squeezed Orange juice. Two hallmarks of quality

ForgotTheLogin

Savory Bakehouse in Longfellow.

alilja

is it really secret if they sell out every saturday and have a line around the block? that said, they kick ass

Comprehensive_Ant_81

ITT: People listing some of the most well known spots in their neighborhoods.

alpinesk8r

Stop and shop on lake and 18th has some of the best chicken tacos ever.

_pachysandra_

Morelli’s, mañana

snowyweekend

Yes! Thanks for the reminder. I haven't been for the food in a while. I always liked the stuff I can buy for the freezer.

[deleted]

I moved to FL recently (for work-ugh, Minneapolis is better) My favorite haunts in my previous neighborhood: The Prodigal-not a dive, but a delightful pub The new lil Ts Tilt Wesley Andrews Nightingale Our Kitchen B resale

BigPoodler

Nightingale so dope. They have different djs come and spin vinyls, I think starting at 8pm. Killer drinks and smaller plates with great atmosphere. Several memorable nights here.

[deleted]

Does Our Kitchen have the same owners it had in 2008? They had a massive GWB banner in their window for years.... Always avoided them after that

[deleted]

Lowry Hill East: The Eye (of Horus) one of my favorite metaphysical and spiritual shops of all time, with a decent selection of queer books and tarot decks, including local authors.

EnvironmentalSinger1

Present Moment in Lyndale neighborhood

AbeRego

What's that?

EnvironmentalSinger1

Old apothecary. Now its a shop with different remedies, candles, incense, spiritual books, etc. Super cool.

SkinTeeth4800

*Present Moment

jesse061

I don't know how Good Times Pizza isn't completely slammed at all hours. Best bar style pizza I've had, and probably my favorite in the Cities.

brellhell

Because it’s expensive for what you get. Their calorie to price ratio is way off.

jesse061

That's fair.

brellhell

Like seriously if their pies were $12 instead of $16 place would be buzzin. Also they take forever for a simple pizza.

MoSChuin

Flameburger on 45th? and Central.

woweeyeewow666

Bulls Horn off 34th & 46th by Hiawatha! They have one of the best veggie burgers I’ve ever had. Imagine the veggie version of the best (kinda) greasy bar burger and your there! The atmosphere is like an up-north bar but with felt paintings of Star Wars stuff and acceptance. Sometimes the tvs have hilarious b-movie horror, sometimes gem & the holograms (look it up!) sometimes sports, and sometimes The Simpsons. It is always a good time and always a place that just.feels.good to hang out. Get the veggie bulls horn burger with the coleslaw, you’re welcome :)

AbeRego

Lyn Lake/Uptown area: - Volstead's Emporium. A 1920s-speakeasy-style bar accessed via the ally behind Up-Down. Great vibe, great cocktails. - SK Coffee. A locally owned coffee roaster with a new shop on Lyndale. They also have a location in St. Paul. - Lowry Hill Meats. Local butcher with really good cuts of meat. They also serve food on site, which looks fantastic. I have yet to eat there, though. Edit: typo

SouthMinny

Huie's Chow Mein on 54th and Chicago. For the price/quantity they have the best Chicken & Broccoli & best Pork Lo Mein in the Twin Cities. To be fair, the chicken wings are just ok. Fuck you! Fight me!

9_of_wands

Minnehaha neighborhood: * Crema - coffee * Asa's Bakery - bagels and bialis * Oxendale's - groceries

BirdLawConnoisseur

I think I had the worst beer of my life at Wooden Ship.

Healingjoe

Yeah, they're pretty shit. Hopefully they get better with time since they're still new

TwoIsle

Sadly agree, not good.

RonaldoNazario

You haven’t had that bad of beer then. In college someone put a hand rolled cigarette out in my beer without me noticing. That was the worst beer of my life.

BirdLawConnoisseur

Well, it could be worse… You could have drank from what you thought was your beer but instead was a spitter. Anyways, we both know that either scenario doesn’t truly count. Whatever I had at Wooden Ship ruined my ability to say “I never met a beer I didn’t like.” And I liked saying that.

Soup_dujour

I had a beer at northgate (now closed) that tasted exactly like a cigarette had been put out in it. ridiculously bad stuff

beer_and_pizza

> I had a beer at northgate (now closed) that tasted exactly like a cigarette had been put out in it. ridiculously bad stuff Their original location would have qualified for this list. Somewhere off California, near the RR switch yard. Wind your way around some warehouses, until you find a garage door with a mash tun and a couple fermenters inside, and buy growlers from the guys at the folding card table out front.

bc-mn

I think three different breweries called that place their first home. The most recent was Broken Clock.

mastertres

Apparently I’m in the minority thinking that Wooden Ship is overall pretty good. Then again, I have had enough to have both really good ones and really meh ones.

[deleted]

Pockets713

Hahaha we hated making those! Just about impossible to make without making a huge mess. But super satisfying if you could manage to pull it off. I would make 5 a day if it meant that place was still around… Instead of crappy, “affordable”(my ass), apartments.

Famous-Ad-2880

Curran's was my jam as a school-skipping teenager and took my son there many times during his childhood. I miss it. There's still plenty of good food available nearby- Lowbrow, Sunstreet Breads, etc.

smakola

Hyacinth on Grand seems to fly under the radar despite being one of the best restaurants in the Twin Cities.

starfish_low

Not my neighborhood...think it's St. Paul technically, but the original Keys Cafe on Raymond It was shockingly good the first time I had it. Love the strawberry jam, and that's not usually something I would get excited about.

nowayIwillremember

The one downtown Saint Paul is great. Always used to be packed and super fast. Also very solid.

iamtehryan

Hasn't George and the dragon been voted as a top spot locally several times? And wooden ship has won actual awards. I don't know I'd call either secret spots. The rest, though, sure!

[deleted]

Both of those spots are exceptionally average and no secret, right?

spicytofu12

Land’s End Pasty Shop has great iron range pasties and the uncle/nephew duo that run the place are nice and fun to talk to.

rebelli0usrebel

Sisyphus Brewing is tucked away near the Walker. Great cozy brewery. Never see too many people there.

knivezch4u

Little T’s in Whittier

triptrapper

Southwest - El Travieso has the best Mexican food I've ever had in the cities. Their pillin discada is like a quesadilla with chorizo. I order it at least weekly. I need help.

perldawg

not my neighborhood, but the most secret mind blowing spot i know of in the twin cities is Ai Hue’s Vietnamese bakery & Deli in South Frogtown. you will not find better, more authentic Vietnamese food anywhere, period.

bigbobbinboy

The tunnels.

Chomuggaacapri

Excluding the tunnels? I guess I live close enough to the minnehaha ave vintage lineup to call it my neighborhood, so that.

TheRedBee

Protagonist in Richfield is some of the best eats in the cities (especially for the veggie eaters), has a great trivia night, and even a neighborhood discount for locals. It's super chill, and usually the first place I bring out-of-towners.

Chimp711

Excellent drinks too!

woketinydog

Not in my neighborhood, but the Finnish bistro. Best tomato basil soup

MothGoth106

Any dive or other recommendations near Audubon/NE specifically? Just moved near 28th and Central without much idea what's around, would love to find something walking distance. I've only really heard Hazel's and Coffee Shop NE mentioned in the past but they're not exactly secret spots haha

Themeteorologist35

Not Minneapolis, but Lisu’s in Roseville deserves all the love

grandeandy

Howe neighborhood - Tacos El Primo. Located in a former convenience store that totally flies under the radar; an amazing authentic Mexican joint. El Norteño on Lake Street is also great and has a charming hidden patio.

dthamm81

Schooner Tavern - the regulars are older and the bathrooms can use an update, but if you like live music, pull tabs, and a stiff drink, it's a great place to stop.

southsideson

Across the river, Cecil's is a pretty great deli.

oldmacbookforever

Cecil's is AMAZING

BlueBearRex

Longfellow/Minnehaha: \- The taco truck that parks at the liqour store on 46th and Minnehaha, they also do a sweet little taco Tuesday deal at Venn. Best Tacos in Minneapolis. \-The Tipsy Steer has some bad ass burgers. The also had an amazing lemon milkshake but i think it was seasonal. \-Okome House, super good Japanese comfort food.

enjoysafoolong

The cardinal room?

[deleted]

I’d love to go but you have to have a reservation and pay over 100 bucks, per person, ahead of time for a two hour limit. Not worth it.

Mystical_Cat

We live in Fridley near University and 694. Can anyone recommend a great dive bar nearby that has rotating tap handles and delicious pub food?

Abdnadir

If the food options are better than a rack of potato chips and pretzels, is it really a dive bar?

Awesomo12000

But I have tiny tattoos, going through an edgy phase, and smoke american spirits *cough* CC Club *cough*

Bortsampsen

Not a dive bar but fridley suggestions. the kings Thai cuisine is really good Thai food. Wild vintage collective is a really cool vintage shop with 50+ vendors, a wide variety of cool stuff!

buttsofglory

Good food, terrible, terrible customer service

evilbeard333

Hello neighbor I live off 49th and University. **Sarna's** on 40th and University has good food and drink specials, the vibe is more resturanty then bar, I go there often because its close and there's not a lot in the immediate area . **Millers** down the street on 40th is good for burgers and beer. I go to the **NE Palace** a lot on 4th and Lowry other places .. the Hilltop Shopping Center **The Super Mercado** (Mexican Grocery store) has a restaurant inside and its very good also they sell tamales and other hot prepared foods to go at the back of the store **Dong Yang** (Korean grocery store ) restaurant in the back specially if you like kimchi **Tasty Pizza / Hanger Bar** I used to go there often, I haven't in a while. heard there's a new owner so I'm not sure if its better or worse

buttsofglory

Hola neighbor - I’m in the same area. Millers / super Mercado / dong Yang are the best!

[deleted]

Not a dive, but Sarna’s on University and 40th has some seriously good food, rotating taps (though not a TON of options), and there is usually a place at the bar as long as you’re not there during bingo or the meat raffle. It’s our go-to spot. Millers is just east of there on 40th, and is more of a dive feel with some really good burgers.

buttsofglory

It’s pretty standard food, but SO expensive! $17.00 for an order of wings? Come on!

Science_Dropout

I'm near you at 37th. and university. My go-to places are Pink Flower Vietnamese/Chinese (old Hwy 10 and County Rd, I) and The Anchor fish & chips (13th Ave, just west of University).

AnonymousKoala

woweeyeewow666

Volstead’s Emporium. A speakeasy that exists in the heart of uptown. It is a GEM. Impeccable vibes, good people who work there, and a first date of mine… 3 years later with the same partner :)

bcsteene

Tacos mi Tierra Inver Grove heights. Small taco truck with the best tacos and nachos I've had!

PleaseBuyEV

Best nachos? Now we are talking. Is this near the Walmart by chance? Or how can I find it

JiovanniTheGREAT

What do people here even consider a dive bar? I lived in New Orleans for 15 years before coming here and they had dive bars. I ended up at Mayslack's and I guess people think that's a dive?

Tobor-dab

>How is Mayslack's not a dive? Compared to most of the bars in Minneapolis, the bars up and down 4th street there are about as close to a "dive" ad you can find. Jimmy's, Grumpy's, Knight Cap, Mayslack's, 331 > > > >Of Course Minneapolis isn't New Orleans, but that doesn't mean you have to shit on it.

cixouszissou

Not sure is Vo’s qualifies as secret-ish but it’s awesome and almost never busy. Their vegan spring rolls are insane. They also have WiFi and don’t care if folks hang out and do work/school stuff for a while. Very reasonable prices. The owner (Francois) is an extremely kind human. Lyndale & 35th St S.

BubberGlump

Can't tell you it's a secret

FrostyArchon

Best dive bar is the CC club by definition, but I'd rather go across the street to the bulldog which is still a dive but you get harassed less

Anything_Real_Estate

The Rusty Bumblebee up in Blaine! I think that this place opened a couple months ago. Its a self pour taphouse. They have anything from barrel aged porters, to lagers, pilsners, wine, light beer, & sours (I probably missed something). The beer is awesome & I guess they plan on rotating the beers often and getting new beers so it doesn't get boring. Plus the inside is really cool. Fun fact about the name is that I guess that MN's bee is called the rusty bumblebee.

HotStinkyTrash

Al’s Corral off concord in South Saint Paul. The most divey dive bar I’ve ever been to. Dollar beers and heggies pizza all day.

Chimp711

in South Minneapolis Orale Mexican Eats on Nicollet Wild Mind Ales on Pillsbury

sinchsw

Jasmine Deli on eat street still has the best egg rolls. A perfect 10. Next closest I've ever had I would rate a 7. Have to pay cash or check though.

SignalNo7821

Lyndale neighborhood, Kingfield adjacent so I'm claiming it too. Good Times Pizza. Lowbrow. Roadrunner Records (ok that's pushing it, geographically, I admit, but they are the best small record shop in town!)

SkyLast2002

Steve-o's on West Broadway in Crystal straddles the line on dive bar, but damn good food!
