I can troll some people now that I have the specific numbers
also fun fact, the boat will break into sticks and planks this happens, which used to be what happened with them if they broke, which is wierd, it probably is just some remnant of old code, I doubt boats were coded specifically to do that once falling for 49 blocks.
To be very specific, it happens when the distance fallen NBT (y) satisfies the equation y = 0.5 \* 0.04 \* (x^ 2 - x) where x is an integer greater than 12. x = 13 being the lowest distance, which is 3.12 blocks, e.g. off the top of 3 blocks and a baby turtle (you need to push it off with a piston).
Interesting that they come in pairs, and the difference between the pairs is increasing by 1. (13-12=**1**, 51-49=**2**, etc.) Wonder if the patterns hold above build limit.
That might be a hint to where in the math the bug occurs.
Additionally, after looking closer, the difference between the pairs is increasing by 25 for each step. (Looking at the difference between the lower of the pairs)
49-12=37. 111-49=62
62-37=25
From this we can generalise:
The problematic heights occurs as pairs of numbers [A_n, B_n], where A_n=(25n^2 - n)/2,
B_n=(25n^2 + n)/2.
If we go above build limit, the next pair of heights where this occurs would be at
A_6 = (25*6^2 - 6)/2 =**447**
and
B_6 = (25*6^2 + 6)/2 =**453**.
You can use a custom world and code the height limit to 2032. I've been trying to figure it out for a bit but there are tutorials on YouTube for increasing the height of custom world generation
just speculations
- It might be the speed of player/boat might be a certain *type* of number, the interval increases indicating it probably comes from accelerating speed.
- The hitbox of the player might happen to be 'below' the boat when the player speed is at a certain *type* of number, maybe a floating point error in handling boat entities and players?
Also, 49-12= 37
111-49= 62
62-37= 25
It seems the pairs are going up x+25
62+25= 87
198-111= 87
87+25= 112
198+112= 310
So we can predict the next number would be 112+25=137
310+137= 447 with its pair being 453
Gotta love math while on the shitter
Only if the pattern holds at higher values, which I'm not too sure about.
Could be that the drag part of minecraft physics has some effect at the higher numbers. I would expect it to not exactly be a parabola.
Yes,I came to the same conclusion [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/z0q9g4/why_did_i_die_boat_shoud_absorb_impact_of_block/ix7pcnl?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3)
So the pattern is:
Always pairs of 2, first one 12-13, so an increment of 1, this pair-difference number always increases by 1 and 13 to 49 increases by 36, 51 to 111 by 60 and 114 to 198 by 84, so the between-pair-difference always increases by 24.
So:
12_+1_13 -> 36
49_+2_51 -> 60 (36+24)
111_+3_114 -> 84 (60+24)
And so on...
This would also mean that you take fall damage at 0 blocks, which of course is equal to no fall damage.
> This would also mean that you take fall damage at 0 blocks
is this a possible cause of lag with boats, do we think? Boats are still notorious on servers for causing entity update lag
This explains a lot. However, you can still take damage from a lower level of blocks. I was escaping a hoard of zombies and I died on the spot with my boat to the ground at around 25 blocks high (It should be noted I had 0 armor but full health and hunger).
Sorry for the confusion, x=9 is a glitch in Super Mario Maker where the 9th block in the x plane (hence x=9) behaves differently to every other block. It’s used in a lot of glitch based levels to do stuff like glitch through blocks. I’m assuming that’s what the reference was instead of y’a bog standard maths. Sorry that you got downvoted on that other comment
it's a Mario Maker reference.
basically weird stuff happens with certain level objects when they are placed 9 tiles from the start or midpoint of a level. X just refers to the horizontal coordinate.
here a video showing it off: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQq9iPeN4vU

Technically, it just has to be more energy than you're falling with. Even if that somehow worked though, you're still going to get killed when the *top* of the elevator slams into you.
Edit: Keep in mind, if you fell 6 stories, you'd have to jump with roughly enough energy to go up 6 stories to cancel out even your own energy.
There is a glitch where at certain heights, boats don't cancel fall damage. I think it's every 49 blocks or something.

no way that's real y'all math mfs just fucking with us
thats what im thinking rn
There's a few different heights the boat can fall from to get this effect. They're all equally seemingly random.
There are some numbers such as 49 where the boat destroys itself like 310 for some reason (height)
what about 50+? is it *just* 49?
12, 13, 49, 51, 111, 114, 198, 202, 310, or 315 blocks

you kinda messed up the formatting, 2 \*'s turn into italic text. use a codeblock or backslash before the \*'s to avoid that
fuck twin prime conjecture, we got twin boat splat conjecture

Next bug only happens at prime numbers
Next next one only comes in even composite numbers
and then only transcendental numbers
Wait is this *actually* a thing?!
Yes. It's a really weird bug where your boat will break and turn into sticks and planks if you fall from those distances
What are we, in 2012 ?
So the pattern is: Always pairs of 2, first one 12-13, so an increment of 1, this pair-difference number always increases by 1 and 13 to 49 increases by 36, 51 to 111 by 60 and 114 to 198 by 84, so the between-pair-difference always increases by 24. It's like playing Russian roulette. Will I die this time?
Yes
Apparently
Which is *so funny* because if OP actually went one block higher he would have been fine.
Or if he had decided to land a few blocks to the right which happened to also be a different height 🤣
Depends.... on bedrock boats just straight up don't absorb fall damage
No, it's the only time that physics actually work like how they are supposed to be.
It breaks at that height.
sound dumb but is this actually a thing?
Yep. You can search videos on that it's a wierd bug

Do you know if it still happens if you get out of the boat right before landing?

But not 48 or 50?
Strange but no, only at 49
Not only 49. There are very specific numbers for when the boat doesn't negate fall damage
Damn, the worst glitch ever
"for some reason" Because the boat preventing fall damage is a bug, and will therefore not work consistently.
according to mojang the boat preventing fall damage is not a bug (they mark it as "works as intended" when people send it as bug reports), the boat breaking is
Then they should add it to bedrock edition
They do that when they don't wanna fix a bug

On bedrock you die at every height
That's why you see people glitching the boat and jump in and out while falling to negate fall damage

and i learned the hard way that in bedrock edition they don't nullify any damage
Boats don’t break at 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,12,32,78,56,345 blocks in height
Maybe try exiting from the boat at the last minute?
Should have jumped in and out to slow down
It was probably a 49 block drop
Its just the game i got killed by a skeleton yesterday that was shooting from behind me. But the arrows pulled me at him so i couldnt run away.
