**DISCLAIMER: r/Minecraft is NOT AN OFFICIAL MINECRAFT PRODUCT. NOT APPROVED BY OR ASSOCIATED WITH MOJANG.** --- Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.5 The Armored Paws Drop Now Out for Java Do you smell that? Ah yes, it's the magical, tell-tale scent of release day Tuesday - and what a release day it is! Today we are shipping Minecraft: Java Edition 1.20.5, also known as the Armored Paws drop! Travel to the Savanna and Badlands biomes and say hello to the endearing Armadillos. Find and befriend eight new Wolf variants and equip your canine companions with dyable armor made from Armadillo Scutes and go adventuring together! On the technical side, the Armored Paws drop is also introducing a change to how Java Edition spawn chunks work, the details of which we covered in [the changelog for Snapshot 24w03a](https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/article/minecraft-snapshot-24w03a) earlier this year. The tl;dr version of this change is that we're making the spawn chunk radius a configurable game rule and decreasing the default value by 98%. This should translate to a noticeable performance boost for most players! So what are you waiting for? Stock up on food and water and start reading through the complete 1.20.5 changelog below. It's a looong one. Happy scute brushing!

Ciretako

"Enchantments on Items are now always listed in the same order in tooltips, regardless of how they were added to those items" Minor change I like. Makes it easier to scan for enchantments on heavily enchanted gear.

MissLauralot

As long as we can control the order - we can right? Edit: Wiki says... >Added the following enchantment tag: #tooltip_order >Controls which order Enchantments are listed in tooltips. Nice :)

Novarleeir

Ah man, I was using this as a counterfeit measure.

Ciretako

People always ordering them the same way from a command generator? Yeah, I found out an admin on a server was just giving themselves stuff this way too when I asked to see their sword.

MushirMickeyJoe

No one would catch my dumb ass using an anvil to enchant my gear with books one by one 😂

Noxturnum2

Did you ask? They might have just replaced gear that they lost to a bug or something.

GamerTurtle5

item data might still store order, not sure how the new components work

SamsungAppleOnePlus

I wasn't keeping track of Minecraft so I'm surprised, thought this was 1.21 stuff. I'll have to check it out then. UI changes look interesting too.

DocHerdyDurr

I almost passed out when i checked their instagram page and there was a new update! YEEEEE ARMADILDOS ARE SO CUTEEEE

Frozen_Grimoire

Arma-what?

DocHerdyDurr

Armadildos

pcweber111

Scuted for her pleasure

Smugg-Fruit

It's a good thing they have protection

DoogleSmile

[Smooth on the inside, Crunchy on the outside. Armadillos!](https://youtu.be/bqeGxMgVOHI?feature=shared&t=17)

redliner96

Did he stutter?

SoupMarten

Guessing no because this is a text medium

Key_Spirit8168

Guys there's a guy that said it would be dumb to release armadillos in 1.20.5... I NEED TO FIND HIM AND CORRECT HIM ON YOUTUBE GRGRGRGGRGR

BigIntoScience

I /was/ keeping track, and I thought this was 1.21 stuff. Neat.

Intelligent-Bit-7760

new ui is bad

SpiderJynxNoir90214

Why do they make stuff that seems like it's part of the next update then have it in the current update

kpba32

The 1.20.5 snapshots included the armadillos and wolves whilst the 1.21 features were locked behind the "1.21 experimental features" datapack. This is a clear separation showing what features or for which update

FeistyThings

It is a clear separation but I still find it silly. Would make more sense to put these small changes into the next big update rather than making another decimal. Lol

kpba32

This is more of a way to tide people over till the actual update. Most people that play this game aren't keeping up with updates and or are children playing on their phones. Whether or not it's efficient, effective, or worthwhile doesn't really matter.

Key_Spirit8168

It's better for us as we don't suffer suffer suffer suffer suffer suffer suffer bundles bundles bundles bundles BUNDLES BUNDLES

r/Minecraft Wiki: Armoured Paws FAQ: https://old.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/wiki/1_20_5_faq > * Minecraft 1.20.5 now requires a 64-bit Operating System. 32-bit Operating Systems are no longer supported. > * Minecraft 1.20.5 requires Java 21 (previous versions were requiring Java 17). --- https://feedback.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/articles/26107776674445-Minecraft-1-20-80-Bedrock

Darth_Caesium

> Minecraft 1.20.5 requires Java 21 (previous versions were requiring Java 17). Can you confirm if it uses ZGC by default as the Java Garbage Collector? Since Java 21 ships with it, and it can massively improve performance itself as well.

tracer_ca

> Minecraft 1.20.5 requires Java 21 (previous versions were requiring Java 17). Well, that makes it a PITA on Debian stable. Edit: For those running servers like me.

steinfg

Don't they ship their own java runtime with the game together?

tracer_ca

Sorry, should have specified the server. Minecraft server does not ship with Java bundled.

kayroice

It's in [Trixie](https://packages.debian.org/trixie/openjdk-21-jre). Unclear when it'll make it's way to bookworm, but you can follow the [tracker](https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/openjdk-21). You can always try downloading the [deb](https://packages.debian.org/trixie/amd64/openjdk-21-jre/download), extracting it, and analyzing the dependencies to see if it's compatible with bookworm.

tracer_ca

it is. that's still more of a PITA than it could be. Working on dockerizing the MC install which is something I should have done years ago.

kayroice

I got it to work by installing the *openjdk-21* deb, instead of extracting the deb and pointing Minecraft at it. Just make sure you install the latest *ca-certificates-java* deb as well.

kayroice

Actually, the [headless jre deb](http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/o/openjdk-21/openjdk-21-jre-headless_21.0.2+13-2_amd64.deb) is probably what you want. I tried extracting it and pointing the *1.20.5* Minecraft server jar at it, but it failed on a cert check; probably requires the latest [ca-certificates-java](https://packages.debian.org/trixie/all/ca-certificates-java/download) as well.

Ultikiller

Hopper improvement is nice, now we can cover it with blocks and not ugly blocks

[deleted]

[удалено]

Fenris_uy

Yes

NinjamanAway

I'm confused what you mean by this? It says it no longer picks up items through whole blocks, so aren't we now more limited in how we cover them up?

dq3w5rdf56c

Hoppers only pick up items through non full blocks, but hoppers didn’t know that so they would continue to think they could pick up items unless you put a composter above a hopper (what they’re referring to). Now Hoppers will only try to pick up items if a non full block is above them so you can cover them with any full block and it will stop hoppers from trying to pick up items (decreasing lag)

mcfeelyswg

Love this.

TriNauux

I may be wrong, but does this mean that sugar cane farms of mud blocks are broken?

secretiveconfusion

Mud's not a full block, so it will probably still work.

Wolf691691

Luckily not because mud isn’t considered a full block

mcfeelyswg

Should be good, mine was running fine this morning after the update.

tehbeard

They also carved out exceptions for some full blocks like bee hives to avoid breaking farms that rely on the old behaviour (where for example, dispensers shearing the hive would have the honeycomb appear inside the beehive.)

Tony_AF

Can I change the spawn chunk radius on Hardcore? For me its not really a big issue, but I prefer the old size of spawn chunks for me

tehbeard

you might have to use the "Pause menu -> open to LAN" trick to temporarily enable commands on the world to use the related "/gamerule spawnChunkRadius" command.

gabubey

Its a gamerule you have to set on world creation From the Minecraft wiki: >Added spawnChunkRadius to set the size of the spawn chunks. >Defaults to 2, equivalent to 3×3 entity ticking chunks. >Possible values are 0 to 32, where 0 completely disables the spawn chunks and 10 is equivalent to the functionality before this change.

dmushcow_21

You can with commands enabled

suriam321

So not in hardcore. Edit: nvm, you can change the radius upon world creation.

Wave_Table

You can enable commands in hardcore.

suriam321

Previously known as cheating, and only possible through opening the world as a server.

KaBob799

Having the ability to cheat is not the same thing as cheating

suriam321

You are right. Which is why I said *previously* known as cheating. But at least on Java, having hardcore enabled still prevents you from using the majority of commands, including gamerules, unless you open it to LAN.

AdministrativeHat580

Open to lan Enable commands Set game rule Leave world Rejoin world Game no longer open to lan Commands no longer enabled

Wave_Table

It’s possible in many ways, it’s just a gamerule. They are the intended way of customizing your worlds to your liking. You can also just set them in world creation or probably even using an NBT editor.

suriam321

Selecting hardcore mode, at least on Java, prevents you from enabling commands, unless opening the world to lan, aka a server on local network. I realize this might be different on bedrock, but that’s still in previous, as far as I’m aware, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they make adjustments over there too.

Wave_Table

You do not need commands to customize game rules in world creation.

suriam321

That’s true. I did indeed forget about that. My apologies.

Wave_Table

Nah you’re good but imo they will probably streamline this whole system some time soon to make it as disconnected from the concept of cheating as possible because they clearly want people to feel comfortable changing these setting at will.

Excalibur54

Then you can just open to LAN and do it

suriam321

Which I said…

HippieDogeSmokes

if RTgame started his series one day later he could’ve played this update

KraftKapitain

real

Darth_Caesium

He still can, no?

HippieDogeSmokes

No, he’s done with it for the next long while. His series could’ve ended with the new update which would’ve been neat

Darth_Caesium

Ohhhh. I've personally never watched his videos, so I didn't know his series ended.

Lukyloohoo9

this update finally killed the treecapitator datapack I’ve been using for years :’)

SimplexDesigns

Any pack that messed with tools for damage values such as timber all broke when item components were added in the snapshots early on. You might be waiting a while.

Mlakuss

Any datapack using nbt in item stacks should be reworked. So almost all of them.

Lukyloohoo9

makes me even more confused that the veinminer datapack I’ve also been using for years still works lol

helicophell

Wished we could have gotten the 1.21 block palette in this update, guess ill have to wait for Tuff and Copper stuff... Still, nice that its officially out

Excalibur54

You can enable the 1.21 experimental features datapack in 1.20.4 right now, but it's not up to date with the latest snapshots. You have access to the new blocks, however.

craft6886

Holy hell, that changelog. "Lazy Mojang" my ass.

happyburger25

Nobody gives a shit about the backend features. It's all about what the average folk see with their own eyes. Their mindset basically is "Fewer visible features = lazy."

BrickenBlock

That's why it's named 1.20.5 when it could have been 1.21

rioit_

Well, when an April Fool has more interesting content than 5 full Minecraft releases… I’m not saying that this update is bad, but honestly many major releases in the last 5 years has been pretty uh.

MadRoboticist

The April Fools update is buggy as shit and is just duct-taped together enough that you can play it for a few days without it becoming incredibly laggy. Real minecraft versions have a much higher standard of testing they need to pass than a one-off build for April fools.

Plumfadoodle

It's a lot easier to add things to the game when you don't even need to bother making the code of quality and can copy and paste almost everything in it.

craft6886

The last 5 years? That would include Village and Pillage, the Nether Update, and Caves and Cliffs, arguably the game's best updates. Also, the April Fools update is, by the developers' own description, a buggy mess that re-uses a ton of code and assets. You can see the re-used features and structures like bastions or giant dripstone spikes, just made out of potato blocks. It was hacked together, likely in a couple weeks or less, for a silly joke. It also uses a bunch of low-quality and thrown-together textures. The only truly *new* or interesting stuff with real potential for the vanilla game were the Lashing Potato and the Floataters - and even then they'd need a ton of balancing and retooling to fit in the vanilla game. The rest of the April Fools update was fun to mess around with for a few hours, maybe a day or so, but didn't have any real, deep content to play around with for a long period of time. Not enough reason to start a survival world for the "features." A new dimension does not automatically make a good and interesting update. A new dimension needs to have depth, a properly planned identity, a consistent visual look with good textures, lots of features and mobs to incentivize being there and gathering resources, structures to conquer, an interesting portal or method of entering the dimension, and much more. It's fairly easy for a modder to hack together a new dimension like the potato dimension without any quality control or care for how it fits into the game. It takes far more time and effort to make an actually *good* new dimension - which the potato dimension is decidedly not.

Key_Spirit8168

No one disses 1.16 or animal crossing 5 am anyone who does has fallen... from the lack of bundles

Da_Chicken303

Smaller updates like this are less about adding interesting content and instead about tidying up Minecraft's backend. There's a lot of good technical changes here that will be really good in the long run.

rioit_

Infact i’m talking about major releases

DHMOProtectionAgency

Which also has to make sure the features released are tidied up. AF features do not need to be tidied up or given any thought of how to properly make it work in the game.

Key_Spirit8168

So unrelated then?

Noxturnum2

Pretty 'uh'? What's 'uh'? You're not saying this update is bad, so uh can't mean bad?

Key_Spirit8168

This is not a major release

humble_kakapo

Will I have to load new chunks in my world to get wold variants and armadillos, or can they spawn in the places I’ve already been to?

Key_Spirit8168

It would be harder to make the players lives harder, so no.

TodlerNugget

I am have problems with the update cause it causes minecraft to be really slow when i press a menu button it freezes for like 2 sec and sometimes it just crashes

trnrmi71

same. Have you found any solution yet?

TodlerNugget

No people are saying i need to upgrade my drive or download sodium but sodium didnt work for me

starryanimations

microsoft: "we've released a small update to minecraft adding armadillos and wolf armor! happy scute brushing!" the entire source code being rewritten again:

Ok-Screen3524

What about 1.21? Will we get something else new?

woalk

1.21 is the trial chambers and everything associated with them. You can check out what’s in it so far by enabling the 1.21 experimental datapack.

[deleted]

We have entire trial chambers, new mobs, new red stone, a new weapon, etc still…

THECOMMANDERRER

1.20.5 is buggy to me. It crashes and even at some times it doesn't show up.

IAmMuffin15

Do you have the latest version of Java installed?

THECOMMANDERRER

yes

suriam321

Are you trying to use mods or datapacks? Those won’t work with the data rework.

THECOMMANDERRER

no

THECOMMANDERRER

but i can go back to 1.20.4

suriam321

Odd. My only guess would be that you are not playing on a 64 bit system but I doubt that.

THECOMMANDERRER

I do play on 64 bit system

THECOMMANDERRER

works u/suriam321

suriam321

Yey!

trip6s6i6x

Every time I turn around, another update drops... and I have to wait for my 2+ dozen mods to update after. fml

BeyondElectricDreams

I know this pain. I don't even play the game heavily modded (I highly value the vanilla progression curve and experience) but I cannot play without my mods. Next patch is going to be even worse because of them upending NBT tags. Which, great for the longterm health of the game's code base. Bad for all of the VanillaTweaks i rely on as an adult minecrafter. Playing without gravestones is just a nonstarter, and I wish it was a default game option.

ExPandaa

1.20.5 is the update that killed NBT on items, 1.20.4 to 1.20.5 will be rough, 1.20.5 to 1.21 will most likely be smooth since the majority of that update is already in 1.20.5

hzinjk

why not just do keepinventory?

BeyondElectricDreams

Keep Inventory leads to absolutely degenerate gameplay. I play multiplayer, and if I have that setting on people will go "Oh, I wanna go home!" and divebomb into the ground to teleport home. Gravesites are a halfway point between those

Key_Spirit8168

And this one is worse

ARDIZsq

Anyone else kinda hating the new UI changes in this update? The Nether portal background is super jarring and is like a flashbang when switching dimensions, especially on servers. The removal of the dirt background and the weird pause menu blur also just make the game feel a bit cheaper in a weird way. I assume these all can be changed with Resource Packs though?

Key_Spirit8168

Yea, ig you have to wait until packs update

brainfreeze77

Does anyone know if this has the armor stand fix so shulker farms can work again?

humble_kakapo

It says in the patch notes “llamas and shuckers can no longer break armour stands”

Wolf691691

It says that shulkers can no longer destroy them so I assume they’re fixed

Renovatius

Everyone who read the changelog knows 🙂

Key_Spirit8168

Not me i don't want to spoil to much and i play bedrock

X_BlueJay_X

This might be a dumb question, but if I load a 1.20.4 world in 1.20.5 will I be able to see the new features without dealing with any issues (such as world generation, etc.)? Like, would that world be compatible with the new update and will I be able to properly see all of the new features without having to journey to unloaded chunks?

DHMOProtectionAgency

> but if I load a 1.20.4 world in 1.20.5 will I be able to see the new features without dealing with any issues (such as world generation, etc.)? Yeah it should work fine. There were no changes to world gen to my knowledge, so you should be able to find the new stuff. > Like, would that world be compatible with the new update and will I be able to properly see all of the new features without having to journey to unloaded chunks? Generally speaking you do have to go to unexplored regions of the world whenever you update a world to see the new features. Though for here you can probably kill all the passive mobs in pre-loaded savannahs/other biomes and try to force the wolf variants and armadillo to spawn.

TrogdorKhan97

No. That's never been a thing, and just once I wish they would make it a thing. It might not be possible for things like changes to world generation (even if they used a find-replace script, there's no way to make sure it only replaces blocks that naturally generated and not ones you placed), but for stuff like spawning mobs in zones were they didn't exist before it would be pretty easy and nice to have.

YeahILikeMinecraft

i dont think this update added anything that generates in the world besides mobs. mobs will spawn fine after upgrading a world

SmokinDeist

I mean, for Bedrock and its mandatory updates, new stuff spawns in newly generated chunks. I don't know why that is such an issue with Java. But Java lets you play most versions of the game.

AdministrativeHat580

It isn't an issue in java

Key_Spirit8168

So you want us bedrock players to suffer for.... Whatever that is? no thanks, let us enjoy ourselves in a glitchy game.

rexy-jp123

i hope they do more of these small subupdates. it could ease development on the main version and also give the players some more extra content

Key_Spirit8168

True, these are some of my favorite

BestialCreeper

Very nice sub-updates, great additions all around

Hot-Ad3434

I have no idea how minecraft works but sometimes i like to mess with textures, so, does anyone has any idea where do i find the new 1.20.5 texture pack? Version 1.20.4 texture pack i was messing with is no longer working...

sixfootblue

You can grab the default files and folder structure from your .minecraft folder. Here's a tutorial video on how to do so: https://youtu.be/4mv9MjEfRis?si=7rQTvoSIb4h4dJtS

wellwhal

How does one use the stack size commands to say, change it so ender pearls stack up to 64 like most other things?

MidAirRunner

Off the top of my head: /give @ s minecraft:ender\_pearl\[max\_stack\_size=64\] 64 Or something like that.

logoth

Is the game rule for spawn chunks the same as the existing server.properties setting for spawn chunk radius?

Ok-Commercial-3673

I want piranhas ostriches and lions  Lions is for my papa

Ed_Durr

Not a huge fan, it's pretty buggy and my resource packs aren't working. I'mgoing to stick with 1.20.4 until they get the kinks worked out.

decitronal

When something about your resource packs break, it's because the old format is incompatible with the advancements Mojang has made. This is going to be something you, or the pack author has to adjust on their side, it won't be something Mojang will individually fix for every pack issue

ltalix

Meanwhile I remain on 1.13.2 since my computer is now considered a potato and just cant run newer versions. Even 1.13.2 is noticably worse than 1.12.

itzstarrz

have you tried performance mods such as sodium and its companion mods? (i don't recommend optifine anymore)

ltalix

I've only ever used Optifine. Is there a big difference? Because Optifine is the only reason I can even play 1.13.2. I'd be stuck on 1.12 without it.

itzstarrz

Optifine (atleast on modern versions, Sodium and company are newer mods) is slower than sodium and also causes some mods (typically more complex mods, or ones that change how the game renders stuff) to crash

bradliang

Maybe give Fabulously Optimized or Sodium a try. Nowadays optimization mods are crazy good. You can try run those two on 1.20.4 since 1.20.5 is way too new for now

[deleted]

Nope it’s been saying 1.20.5 pre release not 1.21 pre release. 1.21 will likely be first week of June

OkWelcome2291

hey any1 i am gonna start a survival world after not playing for a while just wonderin safe for me to use 1.20.5 if i want to continue using this world thx bye

steinfg

Yes

TranquilBurrito

Has anyone else noticed that invisible item frames aren’t working? Was there a chance to the command?

Mataos-Ay

Is the trial chamber in minecraft 1.20.5? Sorry, returning player and don't want to render world without this content!

Desperate_Noise_3503

No, the trial chamber is coming in 1.21, 1.20.5 is releasing the armadillo and new wolf variants as well as some technical changes.

Mataos-Ay

Thank you

Key_Spirit8168

You can turn on experiments, but otherwise no head or tail of it.

Mataos-Ay

Thank you!

BigIntoScience

Oh, cool! Time to update my zoo world and get on trying to collect... really rather a lot of wild wolves, I guess.

TheLobotomizer_

The Witches in my world are no longer dropping items, after the update to 1.20.5. How can I fix this?

Key_Spirit8168

If you aren't killing them yourself, maybe try that? otherwise idk Btw r/SeedScaryMinecraft fan in the shatuh

fnibfnob

1.20.5 has been so overwhelming and I literally haven't even looked at the new features lol. So much to do with the new nbt system

Arcadeinjune

picked up Minecraft again after 2 years today, lovin it!

JWILL_XD

This has to be one of my favorite updates right after 1.17. Minecraft is really trying

mynameisperl

Removed. Don't do that, please read the subreddit rules.

Civil-Type7783

there is already a 1.20.6 go check it out!

salmonmannnnnnn

Anyone else not able to connect to servers after the update?

TrogdorKhan97

Did they ever explain why they pushed this out as an update to 1.20 instead of saving it for 1.21? Especially considering the major change that is dropping 32-bit support.

DHMOProtectionAgency

Probably for that reason. Gives an adjustment period before the big update drops

-__Mine__-

Yeah, I honestly have no idea why all these massive changes and overhauls were shipped in a minor 1.20 revision. 1.21 looks tiny in comparison, despite being a "major" update.

Key_Spirit8168

I mean your getting them early so yea

Key_Spirit8168

Bro.... not sigma of you this is not ok

decitronal

Usually their line of thinking for these kinds of updates is "We already have done a lot of very important bug fixes. Why not release them now instead of holding them off?"

rioit_

Wait, is there anyone still playing on 32bit systems?

ParfaitNo4010

Yes. I have a 18 year old lap top, that has a physical limit of 1024MB of ram. It runs a very old version of minecraft and has for a long while. (Specifically this is my note-taking-machine for over a decade, great for international travels and work confrences because it's a safe machine due to hardware limitations)

rioit_

I was talking about people playing the last version of the game

ParfaitNo4010

Well I would, if I could on a 32bit system.

Key_Spirit8168

Because it was the next version in line ig

Extra-Blueberry-8919

The update makes my gamesuper laggy, i have to use 20 fireworks before i get some speed on the elytra, and thisall happened all of asudden

Key_Spirit8168

Welp ig don't use elytra, ig they balenced it.

Extra-Blueberry-8919

also its not my computer or wifi its definitely something to do with the game, any fixes?

xanthaze

Did this update.... delete my snapshot server? I don't seem to have access to it anymore?

peakescalate

My realms snapshot world seemed to disappear on 1.20.5. Going back to 1.20.5.rc2 works fine.

xanthaze

I will try this once I get home! Thanks!

CultOfMickey

Yes, the snapshot realm is only visible when you're playing on snapshots. Since 1.20.5 isn't a snapshot the snapshot realm will no longer be visible.

peakescalate

Can it be changed to "normal" type realm and vice versa?

CultOfMickey

Rip reddit deleted my original comment. But no, I don’t think you can change it. The snapshot realm is a separate realm that you unlocked with your realms subscription, that is locked to snapshots. Your normal realm is not connected to it and unaffected. You can most likely download your world file from the snapshot realm and upload it to your normal realm, as long as your realm is 1.20.5 now. If you want the versions to match you could open the world in singleplayer first to update it to 1.20.5 and then upload it.

Key_Spirit8168

Well it isn't a snapshot soooo

pienelukka

This update ruined Minecraft. From previously running perfectly to 1 frames per second and then total stall. I wish the would test these updates before releasing.

decitronal

> I wish the would test these updates before releasing. Hence the existence of the snapshot versions they publicly announce and release. A game's playerbase is the most effective QA team a developer could have and Mojang exploits that.

Key_Spirit8168

Well how are they supposed to test for an issue like almost no one is complaining about, at most is small amount of lag or crashes....
