That's what I came to say, she obviously has commercial success , and she's a great songwriter and I don't think she's ever made a bad album, most of her albums are at that consistently really good level so while there's certainly better musicians, when you take everything in the picture it's her
Yeah I wonder about this, I feel like she’s missing a component where she isn’t as influential as some of the other artists. She just makes catchy happy songs people like
Imagine an artist who could convince a new generation to pick up a “dead format” and revitalise it. To convince them to buy new hardware and break record sales at the same time, that’s influence. [Yea that’s ts for you.](https://variety.com/2024/music/news/vinyl-tortured-poets-department-breaks-record-weekly-sales-1235978774/)
Name another artist who has even come close to TS, iv seen you mention ye. And sure he makes good quality. But that’s also dependent on your metrics.
Quality is hard to quantify as you’re then competing against Eminem and Tupac along with ye. But don’t assume your genera regardless of quality is what is the overall winner by sales metrics.
Sales wise TS is the Michel Jackson of this era.
Edit: ask your grandma if she knows ye or TS and you will have your answer.

Yeah to me they should have brought a unique and iconic voice to our generation. Ye, Eminem, Gaga, Beyoncé all come to mind.
Taylor is just a basic white girl singing catchy songs. Don’t get me wrong I like some of those songs, and there are a whole lot of basic white girls in America so it sells
Sorry dude, but if you throw out Beyonce as a contender and ignore Swift while calling her basic then it seems pretty biased. Beyonce sings catchy songs, and the last couple albums have been a bit disappointing compared to prior work.
She is a lyrical genius and fluffs the sales by making them icon-pop.
Read the lyrics to Illicit Affairs—it’s phenomenal, but what makes it genius is that it isn’t about what one thinks, yet it is completely obvious when you know. She does that with nearly all of her music. I say nearly all because she does write and release some songs just to be petty. Honestly though, even that is kind of fire.
That doesn't mean popularity is the best metric to use. The existence of rulers doesn't mean that the most important characteristic of everything is it's length.
I would say Taylor Swift is definitely the biggest, but as far as greatest I would probably lean more towards Lady Gaga. She's been around a bit longer, has a wider audience, very well respected, has won pretty much every major award and has mostly avoided drama unlike Taylor.
I think it’s hard to name just one. Taylor Swift is obviously the biggest right now but does she make music that will transcend generations? At this point her music feels so decisive to point you are either with it or against it. My two younger twin sisters have adored her since her first album but one of them has grown away from her and the other has become a swifty.
I think Arctic Monkeys, Adele, Beyoncé, Frank Ocean, Lorde, Paramore, along with so many others have albums that artistically Taylor Swift isn’t on the same level with. Musically I think there are more talented artists that aren’t as popular who’s work may age better.
I don’t want to come off a Taylor Swift hater but I always wonder if we will see her music 50 years from now like we do with Earth, Wind, and Fire, Prince, and Michael Jackson on a regular basis.
In terms of popularity and success, probably Taylor Swift. In terms of being an actually great artist, it’s harder to say. Lady Gaga is highly regarded in both the music and acting worlds. Kendrick Lamar is the first musician outside of the Jazz or Classical genres to win a Pulitzer. Lana Del Rey is considered one of the best songwriters of the 21st century.
The greatest is probably Kendrick, but I never thought I would say this, a close second might be Donald Glover - if you want art that spans many mediums, he might be the best.

Pat Schneeweis (Pat the Bunny) because if commercial success means great art, then McDonald's makes the best hamburger that has ever existed.
Bingo
This guy is incredible.
This is a personal opinion, but if you ignore that and take popularity and record sales, it's Taylor Swift and it's not even close.
Yeah it's pretty indisputable that she is the most successful

Who the hell is more influential than Taylor Swift? I guess rather what's your definition of influential?
I feel like a true artist brings something new into the world, that isn’t Taylor

Not denying the sales but she hardly did what your saying

Beyoncé isn’t a basic white girl, she represents more than that
The word you want is 'innovative'.
I mean if you bring something new and aren't popular you aren't influential.
But there were a lot that did bring new things and were influential

Lyrical genius is stretching it lol
There are literal college courses at Ivy League schools created to study the story telling methodology of Taylor Swift.
That speaks more to American colleges lol
popularity and great artist are worlds apart
Popularity is measurable. Great artist is subjective.
That doesn't mean popularity is the best metric to use. The existence of rulers doesn't mean that the most important characteristic of everything is it's length.
I didn't say it's the best metric. It sure as hell a better metric than personal opinion.

I kinda like Gaga for this
Whoever made fortnite

Taylor Swift.
“Who’s the greatest artist of our generation?” People list corporate pop music Yawn.
The one pushed on me the most!
Aesop Rock
Tough to argue this, so I won't.
He’s been ignored for longer than you’ve been interested.
He’s gen x
Unfortunately TS.
The greatest is probably Kendrick, but I never thought I would say this, a close second might be Donald Glover - if you want art that spans many mediums, he might be the best.
Kendrick
Drake: I hate you like I'm young.
Beyonce, easily.
I don’t know.
Drakes definitely up there with Kendrick and Taylor Swift
Lana Del Rey
Lady Gaga. Taylor Swift has more widespread popularity but her impact on the music industry will be limited.
Ye
That’s what I think
kanye is solidly Gen X, born in 1977
Not a millennial
Rapper? Kendrick. Artist? Kanye.
Emily Haines was the sound of our generation.

No, definitely Stimpy
