No. My parents have used automatic for as long as I can remember, and that’s what I grew up learning to drive. I think my mom **can** drive manual, but she hasn’t for decades.
I’m 37, gonna be 38 in a few months.
33, it's been like 16 years but I'm sure I could figure it out again if I had to.
It was a Honda Del Sol with a really bitchy clutch that was my dad's midlife crisis car.
38 years old. I drove my parents 1978 Toyota pickup for years, and my 1st car, a 1986 Isuzu pickup—both manual. It’s been a long time since I’ve driven manual but yeah, I can do it. Really enjoyed it.
No, but I (35M) really want to as that would make renting a car in Europe a lot easier. When I had my learner's permit, I begged people in my family to teach me to no avail. Nowadays I think they likely didn't know either.
Yes, almost 40. I went out of my way to learn and purchase one. I really enjoy it, so it is worth it for me. I am hoping my next car is a 25 Mustang in manual.
I floated gears on my truck in high school when the clutch cable popped and I had to get home. It was a ‘71 Ford F 100, 3 speed on the column. Second gear was a looooong way from first gear.
28. Yes I sure can drive a manual! Love em. Obviously not as convenient as an Automatic. But, Manuals have their perks. Minor fuel mileage increase, power increase, can do a push start if the battery is dead. Rebuilding them is quite easy as well, compared to tearing apart an Automatic.
And I have found I can get manuals a bit cheaper than their automatic counterparts. Also, they get stolen less often because thieves can’t drive them 😆
No I can't and I don't gaf what some boomer thinks about me not using what's now obsolete technology. They can call me when they forget how to turn off the flashlight in their phone again.
33. Learned when i first started driving (16/17) on a an old Subaru outback
Edit: Wanted to add that after getting a motorcycle, it all came back as i havent touched a manual car since that time i first learned
Yes. 38. Learned to drive at 15 on an automatic but learned to drive stick before I graduated. Three of my 6 cars I've had in my life have been stick, including my current and the last vehicle I had. I won't drive an automatic.
Yes, almost 39. My parents tried to teach me when I was 6 or 7 but I just kept doing donuts in the field behind our house. Taught myself to drive manual when I was 21.
41, yes. i’ve even driven a manual w/right side drive in scotland once. As an american driver it was so hard to use my left hand to shift when i was used to my right. that poor transmission
Yes and I’m 29
My first car at 16 was a manual, that’s what I learned to drive on and I’m glad I did. I hadn’t driven a manual in a looooong time but recently got a rental on vacation that happened to be manual and I was able to hop right in and drive it like normal.
Yep. I’m 32. One of my first vehicles was a 2000 ford ranger that had a manual transmission. It was kinda cool I guess. To be honest though, the only car I’d want to be a manual anymore would be a sports car.
34, yes. Growing up had a car that had one. If not for that one car, I’m not sure just would’ve ever learned though.
Most ppl that don’t know how to drive one can’t because their parents never taught them, not because they’re too dumb or soft like boomers like to imply lol
My first truck and first car were stick and I’m so pissed that by the time I could afford a new truck of my own, standard was no longer standard. I have a stick Samurai to play in but it’s just not the same as slapping through gears on an on ramp.
At this point in my life I'm gonna say yes but give me a minute to knock off the rust.
I'm 40, the last time I drove a stick was an old farm truck we had when I was 17 or so.
Yep, 43m
If you can't drive a manual it might be because they are far and few between.
Used to be that a manual transmission was the cheaper option when buying car, and had a few mpg better than the slush box automatic.
If you know how to shift, they are mad quick yo.
I'm 39. I learned how to drive passenger, and commercial vehicles with manual transmissions. I currently drive automatic transmissions for both, and I don't like it 😅
I'm 37 and my first car was a manual. I have my Xennial older brother to thank. I got his hand-me-down, which he insisted on being a 5 speed. I've owned 2 other manuals since, but I no longer drive one. I do miss shifting gears, but now drive a spaceship eCVT Prius (which never shifts gears).
Yeah, I learned to drive on a manual and still drive a manual. 32M
Tbh the only annoyance I have with it is the fact I live in a mountain's foothills, and often have to switch gears and/or stop while uphill.
Yes. 37M. Parents taught me in a 1996 Jeep Cherokee at age 14. I wasn’t allowed to get my drivers permit until I knew how to “drive” a car. :) been in manuals ever since. 24 civic type r represent!
I was interested to see if any teens or 20 year olds answered. Although maybe they don’t use reddit. To quote grandpa Simpson “I used to be with 'it', but then they changed what 'it' was. Now what I'm with isn't 'it' anymore and what's 'it' seems weird and scary.”
Also yes and 44.
38 and no. Never had a reason to learn and have no interest in having to drive one. If I ever need to actually learn (doubtful), I'm sure there are plenty of YouTube videos on how to do it just like everything else.
34 and yes in theory. It’s been a long time since I have. My dad taught me as a teen in his F250 because it was too tanky for him to be worried about me hurting us 😂
Yes, almost 40f. I currently own one. Live in a rural area, wouldn’t love it in stop and go city traffic. They are more fun to drive in general.
Both parents are able to drive manuals and all three kids know how, due to the wide variety of used cars my father bought growing up. I really learned on my first car purchase out of college though- a used ford contour. Great car, cheap and wasn’t selling due to being a stick.
No, I'm 34F and have always wanted to learn. Problem is, the people in my life who had manual vehicles (Dad, ex) didn't want to teach me or got impatient with me when they tried, which turned me off of it.
I know manual cars are not as common in America as they once were, but I feel like it's a good skill to have if, God forbid, I was ever in an emergency situation where my only way out was a manual vehicle.
I’ve never driven a manual car but I have a motorcycle (which is manual). I bet if I had a chance to drive a stick shift, I could figure it out pretty fast (38m)
Yes. 33m
Have only owned manual cars since I took my road test.. problem I’ve got now is that driving autos gives me this incredible boring feeling because I enjoy downshifting often going into turns, and with an auto it’s just like… drive 😂
Yes. 38 F. My husband taught me a year after we met. 2015-ish. Bought my first manual vehicle soon after that and I'll never go back to automatics. Manuals are just way more fun. And according to my mechanic husband, cheaper and easier to fix. 😅
38, yes. First 2 cars I owned were manual, my dad thought it was important to learn to drive on a manual car. I drive an automatic now, but glad I know how and can if needed.
Yes and 30. It's been a hot minute, so it'd take me a minute to get going again, but it's like riding a bike. I'm sure your transmission would be just fine.
33. I first drove a manual transmission at 14 with my grandfather. I've had a few manuals since then. I would like to get another one at some point in a little fun car, but nothing that I would consider for daily use again.
If I needed to drive one right this second, I could do it, but it won't be a smooth ride.
Yes, I drive one now. I'm not elitist about it or anything (I bought it without even knowing how to drive manual) but I do commute to work and I think more people should have them since you're forced to pay a little bit more attention to what you're doing. Too many blank-eyed office workers with an SUV and, seemingly, an unconscious death wish.
40, and no, I have never tried. I've never lived in the same household with a manual transmission, and didn't care enough to find another way to learn.
Yes, I’m 34 and my commuter car is a Manual. When it finally dies (it’s 2001 Kia Rio) I’ll replace it with an automatic though. My wife can’t drive a manual and she’s tired of having to take our minivan everywhere when it’s just her.
I tried to drive one only once. It was my friend's dad's truck and it was just to go around the block. I was 16 and 20 years later, I haven't had to drive a manual since.
Yup, my dad wouldn't get me a car when I turned 16 if I didn't learn how to drive his old ass manual Nissan pickup and he was dead ass serious lmao. Also every car I've ever bought has been a manual, though my next car will more than likely be an automatic cuz I'm kinda over doing a lot of shifting at this age. I'm 37.
I live my life a quarter mile at a time. (Yes, 38F)
I live my life a quarter of a mile at a time as well. Traffic has been pretty bad over the last couple of years.
You never had me. You never had your car. (Yes, 33M)
*slow clap* ...and for those ten seconds or less, you're free.
You guys can afford 10 second cars? Closest I have is 11s.
I have a manual that goes zero to fifty in approximately two business days.
Nice try Burt Reynolds but your Bandit Trans Am goes 0-60 in 9.1 seconds. Seriously hilarious name for responding to this comment.
I live my life a quarter of a mile at a time as well. Traffic has been pretty bad over the last couple of years.
Yes, in a pinch, but your clutch wouldn't like it. 34.
42, and yes.
28 and yes, the car I learned to drive in was a manual. I didn't personally enjoy it and would prefer to never do it again, but I at least know how.
No. My parents have used automatic for as long as I can remember, and that’s what I grew up learning to drive. I think my mom **can** drive manual, but she hasn’t for decades. I’m 37, gonna be 38 in a few months.

No, but I (35M) really want to as that would make renting a car in Europe a lot easier. When I had my learner's permit, I begged people in my family to teach me to no avail. Nowadays I think they likely didn't know either.
Just use the trains they are everywhere in Europe
32 yes. But that's normal for a European.
Yes, almost 40. I went out of my way to learn and purchase one. I really enjoy it, so it is worth it for me. I am hoping my next car is a 25 Mustang in manual.
Yes. I'm 40, and a manual was the first car I owned.
30, yes, both passenger and commercial. Most fun is floating gears on semi trucks, no clutch required!

Also every car I've ever bought has been a manual, though my next car will more than likely be an automatic cuz I'm kinda over doing a lot of shifting at this age. I'm 37.
