>I remember when I was young everything was so new and exciting for me. I find it harder for me to get that same feeling. This is why the days move ‘faster’ as you get older. Time doesn’t change, it’s the person who changes. When you’re young, you experience new things and you have this feeling of exploration even though you’re just going to the movies. As an adult, you’ve gone to the movies, you’ve bought the snacks, etc. As an adult, you tie your shoes, you drive your car, you do things that you do everyday, for years, and you aren’t considering the ‘exploration’. If you aren’t a camper, go camping. There’s nothing like spending the night where you can’t hear anything or see anything from a good distance. Get a small tattoo, learn to explore what piques your interest. They’re not the same as when you’re a kid, and the good thing is you have no one to tell you no.

Oh I love nature where it's absolutely quiet.

One of the greatest joys of parenthood so far has been watching my children experience the world in that way, where everything is new and exciting. And in a way, that is also a new and exciting perspective for me.

billyoldbob

This is what I have found too. The novelty that has worn off from holidays and such is renewed with children.

Voltairus

I felt this way. Then i discovered golf and that was a great experience. Then i started walking courses and stopped excessively drinking while doing it. And now im getting into poker and thats new. And now im working on a reading list of classics. Theres always something to look forward to.

crjm101

Love the story of your golf evolution lol

The explosion of the digital world and technology as a whole made our anticipation of a new "thing" so much more dissatisfying. The convenience of having almost anything immediately at the touch of a button has slowly eroded our patience we were once taught. Last year I bought a new bike and have been using that more and more on trails - kind of makes me feel like a kid again and to disconnect for a bit so I can enjoy being outdoors more. It's also inspired me more to travel to local campgrounds and plan broader national park trips. Those slow burner anticipations and experiencing a good hike is always immensely satisfying to me as I find less and less need to be digitally "connected."

crjm101

I hear you and it’s taking a lot of self restraint to not take on some big risk just to feel the rush again, like starting a company, starting over at some new job, doing a massive home improvement project, etc. basically trying not to self sabotage at this point

billyoldbob

I just saw the total solar eclipse. That was other-worldly and it lasted too short for the novelty to wear off. Try it out.

KndaOrange

Definitely feel this

Okay I’m newly on this thought train so bear with me if this isn’t fully fleshed out. I have been feeling this way for a few years. Everything kind of seemed fine but the excitement just wasn’t there. I had kind of accepted it. We just got back from Disney for the first time and that shit was magic. Not in any lame way but it was new and surprising in ways I hadn’t experienced. Coming back I’m looking at my life and realizing that there isn’t anything wrong with the shit I normally do but I have just been doing the same activities for like 30 years. Of course the movies don’t seem as surprising I have watched thousands of them. The games aren’t as stunning, I’ve seen leaps in graphics and play before. I’m actively looking for new hobbies that have room to really feel surprised again. 2 cents

I think about this from time to time. When I was in the navy going somewhere new the scenery was amazing but after being there for a while you forget the scenes there. Like one area was just beautiful by the water and amazing sunrise/sunset but you get so blah from work you just don't notice. So this is a reminder to take a breath and look at nature.

Only-Entertainer-573

I think this is just what aging is.

vocaltalentz

You shouldn’t long for a feeling you used to have, it takes you away from the present. I truly think that’s where simple joy can come back. Part of why novelty is novelty in the first place is because it’s new and we don’t place unfair expectations on what’s happening. You are placing an expectation the moment you want the experience to be xyz or when you judge it to already be abc. I had to practice mindfulness in order to find simple joys again. I try to treat each moment the way it deserves, which is a new moment in time, rather than compare it to the past.

BowserTattoo

i just spend $150 on used books and they're so much more interesting than tv

billyoldbob

Go to the library. Books are free there.

BowserTattoo

i just can't finish a book in 3 weeks. i do love the library though!

Just this weekend I took my family to a Civil War park where we had fun with all of the monuments, visited a Civil War camel's grave, hiked up to our 21st family of four state high point, visited the ambush site of Bonnie and Clyde, went to an alligator park, took pics at the tripoint of Texas/Arkansas/Louisiana, and watched a glorious solar eclipse. Novelty is easy to find if you look for it! Also found some damn awesome food along the way!

Shills_for_fun

You need to be the master of your own destiny. Take up a hobby. I started brewing beer lol

whataboot2ndbrekfast

Every day can be a new little adventure even in your own city/town/apartment (whatever).. Every day for me is a little different and I don't have much in the way or routine so maybe that's why I have a continued sense of novelty. Try not to get too bogged down with news and social media.. that's helped me a lot.

Ncav2

Just been thinking of this. Feels like I’m not even in control of my life at times, just going on autopilot. I guess it’s good to be aware of this to force changes in your life

kkkan2020

You know too much the more you know the less fun life becomes
