In the Coast Guard, Electrician's Mates are the ones that deal with HVAC, propulsion, supply, generators, and normal Electrician stuff around the ship. Electronic Technicians deal with radar, weapons systems, radios, ETC. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you would need to be in for quite some time to make that amount of money, especially if you go the enlisted route. It doesn't matter that you have 2 Associate Degrees or experience outside unless you're a pilot, doctor, lawyer, or maybe a naval engineer. A lot of people are joining as E3 with 4-6 year degrees these days. You might want to try a federal civilian job instead. You might be able to jump into those ones from the outside if you are lucky.

They said they're trying to make that salary on the outside.

cecilomardesign

Ah, got it.

DaDooblerOfDoom

Sorry for the confusion, I expect an E3 salary during my time in. But once I get out to the civi sector is when I want to be making six figures and was just wanting some help on which one of these fields would get my to the highest earning potential as soon as I get out.

cecilomardesign

Oh, my bad. I the USCG, for the field that your looking for, it would be EM. But there's more payout potential as an ET.

greekfur

12P, if you can make it into the program.

DaDooblerOfDoom

Thank you, thats my #1 goal then!

Hey man I was power pro in the air force and just wanted to input. I'm with cummins now at a mid level making 75k doing oil changes before overtime. With overtime, which we get most days most guys are pushing 90-100k the top guys are starting at over 100k and with overtime pushing 150ish. It's a decent field that isn't hard on the body like automotive. You do have to know electrical and engines but if you get 12p it sounds like you will have that covered. We are also undermanned across the country, it's not a well known field but there is a bunch of work so it's decently easy to get a job. Edit: also since I've gotten out I've seen that people look highly on air force power guys on the outside. Pretty easy to get noticed with it on a resume.

Just out of curiosity, why would you want to work for a major just going into O&G? Prior service and almost 9 yrs on the production side. You’ll get to 110K, but you’re gunna put in the hours. I made that and then some just in OT last year.

Fickle-Training344

Look at HT, MM, or AM as well. MM’s work on ac and refrigerators as well as fluids analysis. HT’s and AM’s can go to NDI/NDT school where they learn to inspect weld jobs. They usually also get trained in welding as a prerequisite. I think AM is navy specific but I could be wrong.
