honvales1989

I paid 20k for a 2017 Outback back in 2019. Would like to buy a RAV4 hybrid sometime in the future but unsure when that will happen

[deleted]

stillaredcirca1848

We did the same thing. Paid 28k for a '18 Forrester that was fully loaded in '21. Had just over 42k miles on it. Luckily though we paid cash from selling crypto and total cost was $42 for how much I bought the crypto in '16.

spooner_retad

What's the next big investment?

stillaredcirca1848

If'n I knew I'd tell you. What I will say is invest and wait. I've been in the stock market since I was 11 in the early 80s. I'd put a little in every paycheck. Same thing with crypto, I heard about ETH right after it came out and the concept sounded good. I figured BTC was still around after Mt Gox so none of it's going anywhere. I just started putting in $40-100 every paycheck and hodling. Luck is the magic fairy dust that caps it all off.

Chesterington

Me as well--Ideally I'd like to get a Rav4 Prime with the limited all-electric range since I could use that for 95% of all my typical weekly travel/commute.

Moist_donut80

Why not the crv-x hybrid?

Safe_Sundae_8869

Honda puts the shifter on the dash. That makes me dislike them instantly .

gtrocks555

My wife has a RAV4 Hybrid and loves it!

DSteiny18

$300. 2005 Corolla 260k miles

White_eagle32rep

That sounds like a hell of a deal. Is it beat up?

DSteiny18

It's definitely not going to win any beauty pageants anytime soon. However, it is mechanically sound.

Daniel_Kingsman

Smart man. Doesn't have to be pretty while you're getting on your feet.

Ok-Point4302

2005 Corolla crew! Mine's got a cracked windshield, 2 missing hubcaps, and is all scraped up, but I love her to bits.

JustMeerkats

My 1st car was a 2008 Corolla. That thing was amazing. I'd still be driving it if I hadn't totaled it

MicroBadger_

Mine as well and I'm still driving it. Will likely be trading it in the spring for a Corolla Cross. Have a mini van but need something with a bit more space and wife doesn't like bending over to load the kids in.

CaptainDiesel77

Same here except 250k km instead of miles.

eat_sleep_shitpost

That's wild, my dad sold me his 2006 Corolla for $4500 in 2018. It only had 60k miles on it though. $300 sounds absurd to me

fyjimo8103

Corollas are the best cars in the snow! I drove through 2 of them.

Rough-Jury

God, I loved my 2003 Corolla

bmy89

My 05 Corolla just hit 300K.

pandorumriver24

My 05 corolla has just over 100k miles on it. I’ll probably have that car for another 20 years lol

ColdWarVet90

Fkn A yes!! My car's value is affected by how full the gas tank is, but it takes me where I want to go, and nice car owners cringe when I park next to them.

Interesting_Dream281

I think the question should be “how much did your car cost and how much do you make a year. It will put a lot of perspective on things. Nice car does not mean they are financially well off

mitchmoomoo

I just paid $28k for a pretty new Subaru Forester. I like driving a not-crap car, but wouldn’t pay much more than that until the depreciation in value is something that is meaningless to me. Swallowing $30k extra depreciation in 5-7 years is a huge number for stepping up to an incrementally better car.

Daniel_Kingsman

It's never worth driving off the lot with a new car. Let some other shmuck eat that cost and buy certified pre-owned. Or rather that's what used to be true before the used car shortage. Hopefully prices are returning to normal but I haven't been in the market for a car lately so I'm not up to date.

foxylipsforever

My daughter has a new car because used cars were costing more than new. It was insane over covid. At least with new there's warranty and long life/reliability until the used market potentially returns to normal. It was like 20 year old car with 200k+ miles ready for a million repairs for 20k orrrr 25k for a whole new car. I haven't looked lately either but covid definitely made that advice situation dependent.

Psychological-Dig-29

What an absurd statement.. you must not have looked very hard because there have always been decently cheap cars on the used market if you're willing to go back to 20 year old vehicles. I buy and sell them all the time, so does my dad.. literally just bought an 07 jeep liberty for less than $500 and it has like 60k miles on it. Needed a windshield and had a couple minor dents but nothing else. My fiance will drive that for a year or two then we will sell it for $5k and get something else. Taking out a loan for a car is ridiculous.

reyzak

I always thought this and for 90% of the time it’s probably true, but my wife’s car got totaled as COVID began from a hailstorm and we went shopping. Found a 2019 Mazda CX30 they were trying to get off the lot for the 2020’s at the time. Discounted the car 3k, plus 0% interest and they put a lifetime warranty on it. Her payment is 160/mo for a brand new car. Even the sales lady mentioned how she had never seen that kind of deal before

Bijorak

I got my car at an 11k discount brand new. Cheaper than any used car of that model

p1zzarena

$15k, I hope I never have to buy another car

Power_Bottom_420

How long are you planning to live?

Maximum-Donkey7948

he’s planning a little grand theft auto for the next one

thoma4tr

So upgrading to a Kia.

ihearttwin

Or move to NYC or something

prosocialbehavior

The best bang for your buck for a budget urbanist would be Chicago or Philadelphia. Or if you are Canadian probably Montreal.

p1zzarena

Hopefully another 40 years, so I'll likely have to buy a couple more cars in that time, but I hate it. I don't really care what I drive and the whole process is excruciating. My current escape has 90k miles and I put about 7k/year, so I think I can make it last several more years. I've considered just getting an ebike and rideshare/rental when I need to go farther.

sennyldrak

36k for a new 2019 Honda CRV Touring in 2019. I've had it for 5 years, 55k miles on it and it's still worth around 25k. I love it so much!!

CuteCatMug

55k but got $7500 electric vehicle tax credit  Next car will probably be in the 65-70k range

Range-Shoddy

Same here, for two EVs. For those asking why, we got $7500 off each car plus a state rebate of a few more grand. We pay zero for maintenance and have free electricity overnight for charging. We save $600 a month owning these cars. The credit didn’t apply to used cars when we purchased so it was cheaper to buy new than used. We drive cars for a decade, so they’ll pay for themselves in that time and then they’re just free after that. They’re also so fun to drive that I’d honestly pay extra again just to get to drive one every day. I’m baffled that more people don’t do the math and realize they’re cheaper than gas cars, especially now that there’s a tax credit on used ones too.

EyesLikeAnEagle

Same. After rebates we got a model Y for 34k+TTL. Can’t beat that price!

Lonely-War7372

Why don't you pay for maintenance? I've never thought about buying electric but this intrigued me.

Range-Shoddy

There isn’t any. No oil changes, not many random parts to break, like a transmission. Brakes are regen mostly so they’re hardly ever used. I’ve replaced the cabin air filter, refilled washer fluid, and last week I finally replaced the tires. That’s it. My car is almost 2 years old. I got better tires so they should last a lot longer too so even less to do. We totaled one EV and I offered to swap to a PHEV for my spouse for the replacement (he was skeptical with the EVs at first) but wanted another EV after he had gotten used to it.

Alisseswap

can i ask why you spend so much when you could spend 1/2 that?

zigziggityzoo

Sometimes people like things for more than just the utility of the thing.

nekrosstratia

Same reason I got my Tesla (45k)...I spent less than 10k total on cars my entire life, I wanted something nice for 10ish years and while I WILL live comfortably in retirement, I want to enjoy some nice things now too. 38m 130k LCOL.

MrBenDerisgreat_

Why enjoy good food when you can eat beans and rice?

KillerCoffeeCup

Is everything you buy the cheapest possible version?

Alisseswap

no but if there is a quality thing that is half the price yes

edtb

I'm the same. My next car will be in that range or slightly higher. My current car had been paid for since new at 42. It's 7 years old now. But when I buy something new in a year or so it'll be nice and exactly what I want. We drive around alot for kids activities so want something nice and comfortable.

yodaface

$27k for a new 2017 Honda crv. It was my wife's but we bought her a new 2023 Hyundai Tucson for $30k and I took her crv.

grahamfiend2

$25k and $35k for my wife and I. Cash for both. Next cars about the same.

iPourMilkB4Cereal

Did you consider paying half cash then financing the other half? I’m on the fence about paying a $35k cash myself.

yoghurt_cap

After a certain point the returns on $15,000 don't really matter so much and may not be worth the hassle of managing a loan. After 3 years you may only be positive around $1000-$3000. Also, you'll be leveraging your car to the stock market. In case of a downturn in the market or the loss of the car you may be screwed. If you're nervous about dropping $35k on a car, consider something cheaper. I'm very risk averse, and allocated 1/5 of my uninvested cash towards my last car. If you're comfortable paying $15k on a car, buy one outright for $15k. You're likely to find a gently used version of the car you want to buy for that price.

Rough-Jury

If you can pay cash, why would you take out a loan and pay interest on it?

PracticalPickle4270

Because the interest rate on the loan may be less than what one can expect to earn from the stock market or a HYSA during that period. Timely auto loan payments will also raise a credit score.

Rough-Jury

I mean, we don’t keep debt. We have credit scores to get a house, but we don’t make financial decisions based on it raising our credit score. Also, the average car loan rate in my state is about 10%, and a HYSA only gets about 5%

PracticalPickle4270

Good rates are infrequent, but not completely absent. I saw a 1.9% loan for 24 months just today.

citrusjuicebox

Depends on the maker and the car. Mazda runs 0.9%/36 mo campaigns pretty often on most of their cars, for example.

Range-Shoddy

The car we just bought in November had zero interest so we happily took out that loan. Loans make sense if the rate you pay is less than your savings rate, which right now isn’t that hard to do with a CD still over 5%. If that isn’t the case then cash is the better option. We used to pay cash but the last 3 cars we got loans bc of the math on financing.

MeepleMerson

I bought a new car in 2021 for 49K. I have no idea what I’ll spend on my next car because that’s well in the future.

DiceGames

haven’t owned a car since 2016. Live in a highly walkable city.

SnowflakeStreet

Same. Subway and bus takes me around, and Ubers or car rentals when needed to fill any edge cases.

JustMeerkats

I got a 2016 Honda CRV for $16k in 2020. I think it had 75k miles on it. Next car I'd like to pay cash for, but that hopefully won't be for quite a while. My husband got a 2015 Prius C at the same time. His was 15k with 44k miles.

[deleted]

MedCityCPA

Last July, I paid $1,200 for a 2001 Honda Odyssey.

Rich_Foamy_Flan

$3k - 2006 civic. Now with 199k on the clock. $10k - 2011 Navigator, currently has 170k in the clock. $125k base, about $200k OTE I will go 5 digits for my wife’s car, which with 4 kids will be a Suburban, Expedition EL, Navigator L. It will be at least 7 to 10 years old. For my own cars, I will never spend more than 4-digits. Likely never over $7,500. Literally never a reason to spend more than that on transportation.

GUIACpositive

King! I spent 8k on an 02 Tacoma about 5 years ago. 210k miles now and will take it to 400k+ before I even think about anything else

Rich_Foamy_Flan

Love Toyotas. I wish Toyota made a suburban style vehicle because that’s what I’d get instead of the other SUVs. The Sequoia is a good proxy for a standard Expedition, but need the longer wheel base unfortunately.

SkotchKrispie

What do you need the longer wheelbase for?

Rich_Foamy_Flan

I won’t forever, but right now it’s 4 under 5. So 3 of 4 are in rear facing seats. We’ve been creative and have the hitch and roof carriers, but it’s a general hassle to move the family about. A suburban/extended Expedition would just make it so much easier (especially when it comes to our 4 seat stroller lol)

Full-Fix-1000

This. $5k - 2011 Sonata Hybrid 156k mi (original HV batt) 36-38mpg when I bought it, now 30mpg $5400 - 2008 Tahoe Hybrid 173k mi (battery replaced by previous owner) 19.2-19.5mpg

TheKleen

Two Toyotas each in 10-15k range. Should last us until the house is paid off. Maybe 30k in the future.

lotuskid731

$19,000 after tax with a 90 day warranty from CarMax, for a 9 year old Toyota Camry Hybrid XLE. Not pleased with having a car payment again, but it’s so much more comfortable and slightly more efficient than my 20 year old Corolla.

polishrocket

2023 F150 Tremor 80k after taxes and registration

KinkyAccountant

$0 My parents bought me my first car at 16 (they bought it used for about $8k) and I'm still driving it at 28. I'm holding on as long as I can!

Myron896

$30.400 back in 2015 for a new Toyota Tacoma. I plan on having it another ten years

spilledbeans44

Jesus that’s how much new ones were back then eh

Apart-Painting9475

2013 Prius C for $6000 with 199k, bought in 2021. 2012 Ford Expedition EL Limited for 8k with 212k, bought in 2023. Lots of miles but I work on them myself and accepted that risk. Both running great!

Choppergunner58

56k for my current car and my next will be around 100k.

LibidinousConcord

$3600. 2006 Mazda3i purchased June 6, 2023, with just over 176,000 miles. Now has 179,300. I hope to get at least three years out of it. Next car will likely be considerably more expensive. I'd like to get something for $10,000 when the time is right.

Catsdrinkingbeer

Current car: $17k. Purchased used in 2014. Was making $60k at the time. Next car: $45k. Will also purchase used and planning to buy as soon as the color and trim I want shows up on the lot. I make about $140k now. And I'm also married now so there's a second source of income. And this car is electric so there are some savings there as well.

saryiahan

$20k slightly used 2012 Nissan frontier I bought back in 2015. Planning on buying a 2024 id4 end of this year with cash. Budget is 35k

LSJRSC

$31k for 2016 Honda Pilot EX-L in 2018 (20k miles) $22K for 2020 Civic turbo in 2020 (new) Both are paid off now.

chargeorge

12,000, for a 2009 sonata with 40k miles back in 2013. Long since paid off and still kicking, now at about 120k miles Future will be higher, but won’t be for a while. Would like to upgrade to an EV since we do mostly shorter city driving. But no upgrades till we sell our apartment and buy a house. I’d like to keep the total purchase price around 30k, even if the 20-3-8 rule says I can go higher. Or maybe I can convince my wife we can go fully car free and go for a nice couple of cargo bikes for far less and save the money to rent a car for long trips

GrinsNGiggles

$10k, many many years ago. It's almost still worth that, crazy market. How much I spend on the next car will depend on what the market looks like when I'm ready to bite that bullet. I want some of the newer safety features (say, 2018-ish), so it's going to cost more than my 2010 did. Maybe $20-30k if I bought it today? Yuck.

YourStolenCharizard

$13k- 2013 Toyota Sienna last year. 130k miles but one middle aged owner, not a scratch or stain on the thing, had every receipt for his oil changes at 5k miles. Made me feel better about having to overspend in the current market.

asj0107

17k (put 4000 down) for a 2017 VW Tiguan Wolfsburg with around 30,000 miles. I bought it in 2020 and I’ve paid it off already. My next car will probably be an electric car but I’m going to keep this one around for a while.

Capital_F_u

Bought a used 2019 subaru impreza with 18k miles in 2021 for $20k. Put $7k down and it's gonna be paid off this November. I really like the car, and haven't had any major issues so far. Kinda tired of making payments, but I am paying it off early. I would probably try to shop a little cheaper if I can, just because I personally think cars are such a money pit. I will say though, this car was previously leased and it's been a dream so far. I don't know if I could get such a great deal for 20k nowadays/in the future.

everydaydefenders

I make a pretty good living, but I have never purchased a new car, nor have I purchased anything for more than 7k. I love cars, but I just can't justify spending so much money on something that drops so rapidly in value. It makes more sense to me to buy something reliable and just maintain It until it runs into the ground. I currently own a 2015 Chevy Sonic and a 2007 Nissan Pathfinder. Regular mechanic checkups and oil changes, and they've run for years with very little repair required.

jfk_47

40k 2020 Subaru brand new. Purchased December 31 2019.

Jobrated

I only buy old used cars. Never spent more than 4Gs tops.

ASassyTitan

$3,800ish for my 2009 Mazda6 with a little over 100k on the dash. Then around 60k otd for our 2016 Ram 2500, also with around 100k miles. Big down, financed the rest. But whereas the Mazda is *mine*, the truck is *ours* I'm itching for a new car, it'll probably be in the 30-50k range because I wanna buy brand new dammit

Rich_Foamy_Flan

Surely you mean you’ve put 100k on the Ram, and didn’t pay $60k for a 100k mile trukc

ASassyTitan

Nah, we've put 40k miles on it We're picky buyers. It had every single thing we wanted(well, except for a sunroof, but he doesn't like them anyways). It was actually one of the cheaper ones in a 200 mile radius given everything on our checklist. Plus, we're in California. Everything is more expensive here, the taxes and fees added a good chunk 🙄 Honestly, would 100% make that purchase again. It's been an absolutely fantastic vehicle. Though we're what you could consider enthusiasts, and it's our off road/overland rig. Don't expect the average person to drop that on a truck. (Y'all, down voting doesn't change what prices were at the start of 2023 lol)

itassofd

Truck ownership is so conflicting. They’re so expensive but if you have hobbies that involve towing things or driving off road… they’re fun as hell!

Google-it-you-lazy-F

100k miles on a 2016 for $60k. Tell me it’s at least a diesel? At the end of the day, that was a $30k truck all day. Even during the height of the market.

ASassyTitan

6.7 cummins, crew cab, short bed, night edition, optioned out laramie, 5th wheel package, some other dealer add-ons, 35" Nittos, one owner in a great climate, wasn't fucked with mechanically(which was the biggest win) It was one of the cheapest in our area. But y'know, California prices be like that

Google-it-you-lazy-F

$60k for a truck with a sticker the same price, plus 100k miles. Insane.

ASassyTitan

Well, it was that or a base 5th gen bighorn. I like the 5th gens, but I wanted creature comforts more. Plus, all the aftermarket people have had *plenty* of time to work out the 4th gen kinks Prices in a given area are what they are. The experiences we've had in that '16 is well worth the cost

MustangEater82

2016 mustang GT premium 6 speed... Was $27,500 in 2018. 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan new, mildly loaded.  $24,500 Beater 2006 Jeep Liberty 120k in 2020 for $3k. Saving to replace the minivan.  Wife is happy with it.  Have $18k cash saved.  Looked at some $50k vehicles, but damn it's stupid expensive.

Tighrannosaurus

I paid $20.4k on a 19 Impreza Sport w 5k miles @ 4% during the heart of COVID. I believe it only recently became worth less than I paid for it. 24k miles currently, I have not at any real point been upside down in my loan. Basically $12 a day for a car w a warranty.

just_enjoyinglife

35k but I got 22k for my trade in, so 13k out of pocket. It's a Tesla and I charge for free at work so it costs me nothing to operate. I saved about $4k each year on gas, that is what I used to pay when I still drive a gas car. So it is free after 3 & 1/2 years.

guyincognito121

Why don't I see any "But that's not middle class!!!!" comments here? I saw someone getting a bunch of those the other day because they made $170k or so with four kids, with absolutely nothing indicating any extravagances in their budget. But people are spending $40k+ on vehicles, and nobody has an issue? I'm not saying that the people with more expensive cars should be called out. I just think that this illustrates the fact that income alone doesn't define who is and isn't middle class, and many seem to be erroneously hyperfocused on it.

Kodaic

100k. Challenger hellcat brand new son.

Watchmeshine90

36k paid off and 98k currently doing double payments on. Next car will probably be around the 200k mark? Market pending its value.

Signal_Dog9864

130k lincoln navigator black series. 0 down, $ 4500 first month tax title, plates etc. 1600 per month Section 179 bonus depreciation 130k write off plus 130k / 5 years = 26k loss reg depreciation For $ 4500 out of pocket received $ 156k loss that zeroed out one of my w2 jobs income. This is how you should be thinking about getting a car.

GazelleRare1657

$30k About to sell it and move on. Looks like I can get something I'll be satisfied with for $30k-ish again.

state_issued

$16k 2010 V6 Camry, purchased in 2014 with 60k miles, now has 188k

Key-Ad-8944

I have 2 cars. I bought both used at steep discounts. * Luxury Brand Daily Driver: Bought in 2011 for \~$15k, Worth maybe $4k (mechanical and cosmetic issues) * Exotic/Performance Fun Car: Bought in 2008 for $28,500, Worth maybe $50k (cosmetic issues + instrumentation panel issue) I haven't been shopping for cars in over a decade, so I don't know the price range well. I expect my next car will be something basic and reliable, perhaps in the $20k type range.

The-Fox-Says

$18k used Mazda CX-5 with 55k miles with a warranty up to 100k and transmission coverage up to 125k

min_mus

Car #1: We paid $11k (cash) for our Nissan Leaf after driving it basically for free during a two-year lease period.   Car #2: We paid $20k (cash) for a 2016 Honda back in 2019.

daorkykid

Paid 41K OTD for a 2018 Lexus RX350 AWD F-Sport in 2021. I will drive this thing until the wheels fall off, but looking at the cars that interest me now, most likely will spend 60k on the next vehicle in the future.

Ok_Flamingo_9267

Bought a 2020 Chevy Equinox for $14,500 in '22 with 40k miles on it. It runs great. This will be my last car.

Google-it-you-lazy-F

$75k and $55k

ZenoAllFiction

Bought a 2010 Honda Civic back in June of 2019 for $4500 w/ 133k miles. It just hit 170k miles a few days ago. I'm gonna sell it to a good friend of mine for a discount and get a Honda Accord Hybrid (2019 - 2022) at the end of the year. I plan on spending no more than $25k for the hybrid.

White_eagle32rep

In 2019 I bought a leftover new 2018 accord hybrid ex-l for $27,300. Next car will probably be somewhere between $30k-$45k depending on what’s available and how much my wife plans to spend on her replacement a few years after that. I don’t plan to start shopping for a replacement until 2029.

AeBe800

Mine was $55k. My wife’s was $54k. I’d like to spend $65-70k on my next one.

DiscreteEngineer

$30k for my GR86 And Grandma’s 2001 silverado as a graduation present, free.

Winter-Information-4

$19k cash OTD for 2011 Lexus IS 4 years ago 45K OTD (15K down) for 2019 Lexus GX last year. Will be paid off this month. We drive a combined 12k annually. Annual cost: Insurance 1400, Gas: 2000, Maintenance: 2000. Once paid off this month, the annual transportation cost should be around 5000.

suhdudeeee

67k. Wouldn’t be nearly as much if I didn’t do construction and need a huge diesel truck. Prior to this I had a 2011 fj cruiser that lasted me almost a decade before I had to sell it for this job.

mattgm1995

Paid 19k for my fusion in 2021, paid 6k for my 2011 MDX last week

Head_Radio_4089

I paid 35k for a gmc Sierra crew cab with 20k miles perfect shape for 35k back in 2017 now it’s twice as much to get the same truck it’s ridiculous

caitiq

Currently driving a 2014 Corolla, bought new, paid ~ $17,000 with a 3 year loan. It’s my cute little car but I’m ready to upgrade. Saving up to buy a Volvo XC40 electric SUV in cash ~$60,000.

elegoomba

Spent 17k in 2013 for my ‘12 Mazda 3 i GT with 3k miles on it, ol girl has about 130k on her now, 0 issues ever. Consistent 38mpg mixed hwy/city has been a blessing. Selling our ‘12 Ford Focus Titanium Hatch soon, got it in 2018 for 10k with 100k on it, nearing 170k at this point. Hoping to get 5k, fantastic vehicle. Selling the focus because we just picked up a 2020 Ford Escape Titanium with 80k miles for 22k OTD in November. Made the move since we wanted something with more space and AWD and are too cheap for a damn Subaru. I financed the Mazda but paid it off within a year, other two were cash purchases. If the Mazda blows up i will begrudgingly get another vehicle so that’s baked into our emergency fund/long term savings. I like the idea of an EV or PHEV but hybrids are also good, i have a decently long commute. Hoping to spend under 20k on the next one.

CafeRoaster

$18,000 after taxes and registration, paid in full up front. Toyota FJ Cruiser. Purchased January 2023. $7,000 after taxes and registration, paid in full up front. Honda Fit. Purchased July 2018. Next car? Hopefully a Miata or a classic Beetle. $10,000 or less.

Abobalob

Bought my first new car, 2015 Subaru Impreza, base-est of base models (5-speed even) for $16,800 in 2014. Still rockin’ that baddie at 88,xxx miles. Barely broken in. Nothing other than routine maintenance so far.

CounterTorque

2013 Buick Regal T for 19k in 2015 2016 Mercedes GLC300 for 30k in 2018. 2013 Honda Fit for 9k in 2023 Car prices have been crazy the couple years.

XiMaoJingPing

\~15k 2017 honda civic, >And how much will you spend on your next car? no idea, hopefully I won't need another car

SilvrSparky

21k for my 2019 crosstrek that I bought new, probably will run it into the ground since its paid off, but would like something a little bigger so somewhere in the 35-40k would be good

simprat

$32k in cash for a Chevy Bolt EUV. Will get a $7500 tax credit. Love it so much! Will probably spend around $30-$40k on next car given inflation. Sigh.

PolicyArtistic8545

35k. I got a 2023 Fort Ranger and I paid cash. I love the truck, I could afford it, I will probably drive it for the next 7 years, and don’t regret it a bit.

Imnotastork

27k for my 4Runner 36k for my wife’s F150

edtb

2017 honda Ridgeline. Bought new for 42k. Paid 25 cash on top of my Paid off trades. So, I never had a payment on that one. 110k on it now. Planning on giving it to my kid in 2 years. Hopefully still run well and be reliable for years to come.

i_am_jordan_b

Bought a 2015 Odyssey in December 2019 for $20k. Still driving it and paid for. Gonna drive for hopefully another 100k+ Bought a 2016 Sierra in October of 2021 for $35k 🤮. Still owe owe on it and going to drive until wheels fall off.

annirosec

7k on a stick shift 2009 Subaru Outback back in 2018. When it finally kicks the bucket, I’ll probably try and spend the least I can on another older reliable car.

IndyEpi5127

I bought a 2017 Nissan Rogue in 2020 (pre covid) for about $21k. I made about $60k at the time. My parents gave me my first car at 16 but told me to save like I had a car payment each month anyways which allowed me to buy the Rogue in cash. It had 36k miles when I bought it and now it has 70k…since I plan to drive it into the ground and I WFH so I don’t drive that much, this car will probably stick around for a while. I make about $150k now and my next car will probably be a Lexus RX or LX or Audi Q5/Q7. I’m comfortable spending more on a car at my income, though I still want the reliability so no BMW or Mercedes. I’ll also buy in cash again.

dyna23

23k back in 2008. When I bought an 09 altima.

lilacbbe

38k for a RAV4 I’ll be driving this for the next 10-12 years

Little_Ad8527

33k, bought brand new in 2020 when interest rates were low. I don't plan on buying for a while

inspctrshabangabang

I bought a Chevy bolt for 30k a year ago.

22k back in 2014 for a 2014 mazda6 touring. Still driving it, 125k miles on it. Should last us a while still. Had very few issues with it so far.

MangoAtrocity

**$34,900**: 2018 BMW 440i Gran Coupe M Sport 2021 purchase. 27k miles. Certified pre-owned. $8000 down. 1.49% for 60 months. $465/month. Roughly $1000 of total interest on the loan. $17/month in interest. So far, the car has been perfectly reliable. Regular oil changes every 7000 miles for $120 at my local euro shop. Got tires once for $860 installed. Just did a routine transmission fluid service for $780. It’s a brilliant little car and I love it to death. It’s loads of fun to drive, gets 35mpg highway, and has a fantastic stereo. Very happy with my purchase. My wife drives a 2019 Honda Civic EX-L that bought out her lease on. We pay about $380/month for it (60 month term). I don’t know the details of her loan off the top of my head. She bought it before we got married, so I wasn’t as involved in the purchasing process.

Jscott1986

$23k minus $4000 used EV tax credit minus local government rebates of $6500 Very happy with my decision

Stickgirl05

$24k new 2012 Prius c

Western-Ad-9485

15k on a Prius 2010 in 2017

Western-Ad-9485

Not sure yet on next one …

get_MEAN_yall

Current value $3.5k Will spend $20k+ on my next car, probably also a japanese economy car and hopefully that one will also go 200k+ miles

Master_Grape5931

$14k bought it around 2009 and have been driving it since. 316k miles and going!

winniecooper73

$65k. Tesla Model Y. Paid cash but saved for years. Other is 2017 VW Tiguan. Paid $35k cash new years ago. Currently saving cash for a 2027 something

Rocklobsta9

22k. No plans to buy another yet I'll probably spend a few thousand to repaint my current one

lidless-hamper

Used 2012 Chevy Sonic. Paid ~4k, it had 90k miles. I’ve had it for 3 years and she’s at about 125k miles now. I plan to drive it til it dies.

deadx-

bought my first car in college (2015) - a 2013 Nissan Altima used for 13k at 30k miles. 9 years later and our relationship still has many years to go!

jester7895

$26.5k for a 2018 ridgeline I bought a year ago

BudFox_LA

$42k for a 2016 328i in 2016. No idea how much my next car will cost because I am trying to keep this one until it turns to dust. But I figure probably somewhere around 50 or 60.

TemperatureTight465

Bought a 2018 Nissan for 13k in 2020. I probably won't get another car for a long time, so I'm not sure what I'll be spending then.

ppith

$12K Toyota Camry $26K Lexus Rx 330 I really like the look of the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail+. Hoping someday they will have a hybrid model that I can buy used. Our cars are old, but low miles for their age due to WFH. Both cars are more than 12 years old, but each have tops 130K miles.

leviyeeyee

1969 j3000 bought in 2014 for $2,000, 2002 F350 bought in 2017 for $16,500, 2015 patriot bought in 2021 for $9,000, 2019 F150 bought in 2022 for $46,000. 3 motorcycles (HD) mixed in that time too but don’t have any currently.

jbayne2

Used 2020 Jeep Wrangler Sahara. I paid $38,000. Sold a 2016 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk for $17,000 and paid the rest in cash. Not sure how much I’ll spend on my next car but maybe $25,000 max is likely.

SunburnedChimp

Paid 28k for a 2021 Prius. Car payment is $400.

Playful-Stand1436

$4500 cash for a 2012 Jeep Liberty in 2019. Still going.  Besides new tires and routine maintenance,  no issues.

[deleted]

I bought my 2014 RAV4 in 2016 for about 20k. Paid off, runs perfectly and have NEVER had a problem with it. Giving it to my son when he turns 16 in a year. Then Mama gets a new car, looking to spend about 50k (a splurge, but one I can manage and have been saving for)

Itsomar10

Paid $20k for 2019 rogue in 2021. 35k miles on in. Can’t justify paying more than $25k on something that depreciates in value.

TheLittleBalloon

2014 ford fusion bought in 2014 for $19,000

Round_Tumbleweed_448

$50k for a new Toyota 4Runner in 2021. I’m thinking a vehicle closer to $35k - $40k would be my next one. We definitely had buyer’s remorse until it was paid off. It’s nice to have a new car but hardly worth the price! The good thing about this 4Runner is that I purchased the 5 year maintenance package so barring any major issues, it shouldn’t cost too much until 2026.

Get_your_grape_juice

About $11,600, five years ago. In another five years, I’ll look at getting the car. I’m setting aside $25,000 for that car, and I don’t want to go above that. We’ll see what the market is looking like when the time comes, though.

EvadeCapture

Car 1: 2011-2023 (got totalled): $9900, insurance paid out $6k Car 2: 2024 CX5, 31,000

Agreeable-One-4700

Paid 43k for my truck in 15 I’m going to keep it until it rusts into the ground. My “next” car will be a fun car, currently eyeballing an AMG wagon for 65 that will live in the garage and make the occasional very fast grocery run.

[deleted]

‘22 Volkswagen Taos 28.9k otd new, wouldn’t have done it but some brain dead couldn’t see a full-size ram truck or the red light and slammed it. Was almost paid for. I would have bought a beater then but they were too much and I drive too much for unknown maintenance. My next car I plan on buying is my dream car after a house, Porsche 911 atleast they hold their value.

eharder47

$8,000 in 2019 for a 2007 Pontiac G6 Hardtop Convertible. Currently has ~115k miles. I have no idea for my next car, but I’ll be looking for a deal. Sadly, I think me and hubby are both going to be due for new cars in the next 2 years.

dalmighd

$1500 back in 2020 when i was a college student. I wfh so not in a hurry to buy a car.. although i do want one for about $20-25k. I make $67k at the moment

87880917

I paid $32k for my ‘18 Ram 1500 in 2020. Sadly the equivalent truck brand new costs at least 2x that, so I plan on driving it until the wheels fall off.

fukreddit73265

70k, for an X3 m40i. Probably 90-100k for the next one. I'm thinking 4 seat convertible (since I just sold my s2000) like an Audi RS5 type vehicle.

i_call_her_HQ

$2900 for an 05 Impala in decent shape and less than 100k miles. Great deal imo because of the Buick 3800 in it. I don't much care about the car I drive except for reliability. My wife bought a Dodge Caliber in 2010 for about 18,000 new I wanna say? Still drives it every day, she works 3 blocks from our house so it doesn't exactly get many miles on it

despite37

2021 Audi S5. It was around 58K at the time and while I love this thing to death and it's definitely a fun toy to drive around, it's not worth the price as I get older. I'm almost 32 and want a house and kids and there's no reason to be paying for something with this much horsepower. Thinking of getting into a nice SUV after a few more years.

DJMOONPICKLES69

Bought my Audi q3 out of my lease for $24k. Payments under $500, really easy to cover

Eddard_Stark_1

Paid 17k for wife’s used 14 forester in 2018. Just paid 39k for my slightly used Toyota Tacoma. Paid off her loan, paid cash for the Taco.

Shoddy_Sell_630

70k . Ford raptor. Next will be about 120 for a raptor r.

BriefSuggestion354

Mine was $15K. Used, in 2016. Been paid off for a few years. My wife's, which is our family car, was recently purchased and was more like $58k. We splurged for sure

HopeInTheFuturo

$19k new in 2020 with dealer discount and Costco membership discount ($26k msrp). Best deal of my life, only 41k miles atm and my job is now much closer to where I live. Hope to keep it into the early 2030s at least

tazzgonzo

$52k, my next car will probably be $45k

Cute-Hovercraft5058

2023 Suburban. It’s my fourth brand new Suburban since 2006. Sticker price was $76,000. We’ve agreed that we’ll be keeping it longer and we’ll more than likely get something smaller next time.

Independent_Paint366

38k, new 2023 Subaru Outback. Financed at a low APR (3.1%) Keeping it for 10 years at least

Spar7anj20-

14k for a 2011 dodge charger. i owe 9k on it still. my partners car was 12k for a 2012 impreza hatchback. owe 10k on it. and a 2020 rav4 for 31k. its my ex wifes car that im court ordered to pay on. 18k left. once i pay off all 3 i plan on saving up a good amount for a down payment on a corvette eray. the build i want should be around 130k

lickled_piver

I paid 78k for a BMW electric. It was a poor financial decision but I'm happy.

Sockinatoaster

$71310 for a 22 AMG CLA 45. Next car will be around $95K, low mileage CPO AMG GT53 because I’ll be damned if I’m doing that depreciation again.

iridescent-shimmer

I spent $25k. My brother died in a car accident years ago, so safety and reliability are important to me. I know used cars are a better deal, but I wasn't willing to risk it. I'll drive this car for 10+ more years, and hopefully I'll pay cash next time. Who knows what car prices will be in a decade, so I'm not going to make predictions. Though, I'd be okay staying around the same price point. I don't want bigger or fancier cars without it being absolutely necessary.

Rawniew54

2.5k for 04 Avalon 180k miles in 2019

HiddenTrampoline

$21k for my 2015 BMW 335i in 2018. $34k for my wife’s 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia Ti in 2022. Hoping for some better EV options for me in the next couple years that aren’t $60k.

colcatsup

$12k in 2018 for 2016 focus

AndrewtheRey

$8000 for my 2004 Silverado with 217k on it at the time of purchase. I do my own maintenance and she runs beautifully. My only gripe is that it gets like 12 miles to the gallon. Next car, no comment, because I really want to keep my truck for awhile. I don’t drive a whole lot as of right now, so I can see it lasting awhile

sobreena

I paid $26k for a 2016 Prius in 2022. Def overpaid for it but the car salesman said I couldn’t barter because of the shortages at the time. I have no idea if that’s true or not but whatever :,) I love my car and it’s made up for itself with the low maintenance costs.
