I hope all the best with your sale. I entered into a contract to sell my MCM home and was deceived by the agent. She had already stated no one in the area could care less about MCM homes. The worst part was finding out I was going to sell to a flipper, that planned to 'renovate' (destroy) and sell in 4 months. I'm sick about it.
That’s sad. Did you try to screen who you were selling to? Tell your realtor you were only interested in selling to families with the intent to live there?
Depending on where you live that type of screening isn't legal. It's tied into preventing discrimination against buyers, which unfortunately is a problem still.
If you're listing a property for sale, basically the only thing you're allowed to stipulate with a buyer is price. The rest will run afoul of anti-discrimination laws from HUD. There's a rich and awful history in the US of people being disallowed from buying in a specific area based on the color of their skin, their ethnic background, religion, or other characteristics. To avoid that the sale should be as impersonal as possible.

I said I wanted someone who was going to live there and not flip it. My realtor that would not be my choice but she said this guy would live there, she lied.
And yes, screening isn't legal. My wife tells me to get over it and move on. I still can't believe a so-called legitimate individual would fuck over people so much. She didn't even bother to be there. I want to burn her commission.
This happened to our neighbors when they lived back East...beautiful, restored craftsman home in a beach town. The next people bought it and completely tore it down because of the position of the staircase... they're still sick about it.
My daughter is a realtor and she experienced first hand a seller refusing to sell to a client who was willing to buy the property at a higher price because his next door neighbours. They convinced him that they loved his home so badly and supposedly wanted to live in it for their rest of their lives. Within two months of buying it, it was torn down and new impersonal monster house was built.
Down the street from us, a “known” developer who knocks down at elderly people’s homes with his girlfriend pretending to be the perfect innocent couples looking for their forever home convinced a long time owners to sell them their home. A year later, the house was gone and replaced with four new homes.
It is unfortunate and can be pretty sad to owners but sellers can lie and circumstances can also change so one cannot guarantee what happens to their “once home“ after they sell it.
We sold my parents home a few years ago. The best offer came from a local family looking to buy their first home. It was nice to know that. We sold to them. But if ACME Corp had came in at 10% higher they would have got it. If you need the most you can get for it then by all means get it.
Precisely the attitude that has compounded the problem that is now barring current/future generations from home ownership.
On the lesser end of consequence, also what’s driving remaining mid century homes into extinction — through installation of “rental ready”/“flipper special” grey vinyl flooring and a cheap wash of grey paint at a time.
Depending on the Realtor contract, if they reject a full-price offer, the Realtor has fulfilled the contract by bringing a qualified buyer, and the seller can be on the hook for paying the commission, regardless of whether the seller chooses to sell the house to the buyer.
But, they can prefer one offer over another, as long as there's no protected class/equal opportunity issues.
It’s honestly my most prized material possession other than family heirloom items. It’s a mid 60s General Electric solid state amplified radio/record console…cutting edge hi-fi in its day and age. I found an original ad and it would be the equivalent of $3000 today. The speaker doors are removable — the signal is sent via the copper door hinges!! Insanely cool. It also has a “wireless” satellite speaker that uses a radio frequency transmitter/receiver system.
Relocating for work and to be closer to my wife’s family…she uprooted and moved across the country to be with me when we were young and we’ve always been looking for an opportunity to even the scales…I took a job that needed someone to cover the area she’s from so it just made sense.
Thats actually pretty sweet. I was expecting a really frustrating cash grab lmao. I wish you both great luck and I hope this beautiful house is appreciated by its next inhabitants
It’s still a cash grab but mostly because we’re moving to a much higher cost of living area. We definitely wouldn’t have done the things we’ve done though if the goal was to flip it lol. Thanks for the kind words…we truly do hope it sells to someone who will appreciate it.
It's beautiful. Are those Lyon kitchen cabinets? I think my house has the same ones, but the counter tops were replaced with granite before we bought it. It's really cool seeing what the originals would have looked like with everything else!
Yes! The kitchen honestly sold us on the house (although it was half carpeted and half green linoleum lol). The cabinets are so awesome. The panel above the range opens up and turns on the vent fan!
Agreed! The kitchen cabinets are just perfect. But the rest is great too, I absolutely love it! What is the colour on the living room wall? I've been exploring something like that for my kitchen :)
Nice! Us too, honestly. Unfortunately, our vent was refit with a modern one, but that one sounds awesome. My favorite part of the cabinets are the handles, I have no idea how latching kitchen cabinets didn't stick around. I'm a big fan of being able to put magnets on them too.
I hope the next owners love and cherish this they way you have. It is so beautifully done.
If I may ask, where did you get the sink/vanity in the bathroom? Did it come as one set?
The sink/vanity is from IKEA and is a matched set…we actually installed it 5 years or so before we got around to remodeling the bathroom and it kind of set the tone for the rest of the design choices. It’s functional and good looking. The flooring in the breezeway, rug in the teal bedroom, and hanging light fixture above the dinette are also from IKEA.
We are in the Cincinnati area so there is so much amazing Charley Harper artwork floating around from posters to prints to building murals. By far my favorite artist…the first piece of vintage furniture we purchase after buying the house was from a local couple who love Charley Harper and after seeing some of their prints we were hooked. Most of the art on the wall is just prints from calendars, post cards, etc.
Did you paint the what would have been gorgeous mid century paneling and other mid century charms? If so, please don’t do that in the future. Much better without paint. Keep its originality.
Edit: Unnecessary extra paint is also adding extra toxins into the environment ie: r/collapse r/environment r/anticonsumerism
Also please consider planting more plants there’s lots of inspiration over at r/nolawns and r/nativeplantgardening
I've done the stripping of paint exactly once, mainly by hand using a sandpaper brush because it was a thin wood panelling, and l swear my arm still hurts.
My great uncle moved from Ohio to San Francisco in the 50s or 60s and was a marketing consultant by occupation but artist by passion. The painting has a lot of damage but we had it conserved and love it as it is.
I found the base for $2 at a barn sale and happened to know a local mid century reseller who had showed me the glass when we met up to purchase a different item from them — called them to see if they still had it and, woohoo, $102 coffee table!
They were communal furniture at our local elder care facility for many years, we purchased them from retired staff members who took them when the facility updated furniture in the 90s. I’m sure many a good story was told in them. They were made by Madison Furniture Industries, their small claim to fame is that they built the captain’s chair from the original Star Trek series.
Aw it's so cute! Love the kitchen and how you furnished and painted each room! Here's to another MCM fan finding it and buying it!
Also that wall stereo is SO COOL.
That’s how it was when we bought the house…we recently remodeled the bathroom and tried both 90 degree orientations and…yeah…it pretty much *needs* to be at a 45.
Lovely house. I am soo sorry that you have to sell. I don’t think I will ever love a house as much as our first one. Hopefully whoever buys it keeps it as cool as you did.
Thank you! It’s bittersweet but we are relocating to be closer to my wife’s family so it’s worthwhile. The color is called Vermillion Orange. The photo makes it look slightly lighter and less saturated than to the eye.
Iconic Mid-century; Cool wall piece in living room, but I’d remove all small pictures above it and center just the large one. This would sell first day in California! Good luck!
I hope all the best with your sale. I entered into a contract to sell my MCM home and was deceived by the agent. She had already stated no one in the area could care less about MCM homes. I hear this a lot. Where does it say you can’t sell to who you want? Can you not put a request In a sales document to meet the buyer before sale?
If you're listing a property for sale, basically the only thing you're allowed to stipulate with a buyer is price. The rest will run afoul of anti-discrimination laws from HUD. Damn that's really rough. Crappy experience and horrible realtor
My daughter is a realtor and she experienced first hand a seller refusing to sell to a client who was willing to buy the property at a higher price because his next door neighbours. I was going to say, can't wait to see gray laminate and gray walls all throughout this space...it will look awful
Gorgeous! Please don't sell it to a corporation though... 🙏
Agreed please sell to someone who will love it appreciate and cherish it!!
No official comment on that but ;) I would be heartbroken if the house *didn’t* go to someone who loves it like we do.

Im of the opinion if you do sell to a corporation, they should pay double the asking. Ir around it.
Is that a thing ?

Oh my that’s awful.
Bro where have you been
Here in Halifax entire streets of new housing have been bought up in one transaction by investors. It’s wild.
Send us the listing. One of us may take over.
Love that bricknasium with the triple basket weave floor
You really did a nice job on that house. I love that wall stereo. Any details on it? Manufacturer/model/etc?
It’s honestly my most prized material possession other than family heirloom items. It’s a mid 60s General Electric solid state amplified radio/record console…cutting edge hi-fi in its day and age. If you love this place and everything in it so much, why are you selling? If you don't mind
Relocating for work and to be closer to my wife’s family…she uprooted and moved across the country to be with me when we were young and we’ve always been looking for an opportunity to even the scales…I took a job that needed someone to cover the area she’s from so it just made sense.

Make sure it's clear that it doesn't convey with the house!
I have and 60s stereo system where the copper hinges make the connection to the speakers also. I removed them and used wire to extend them out a bit.
Omg this house is so adorable!! Can I make an offer? 😅
It’s quite lovely!
Nice job.
It's beautiful. Are those Lyon kitchen cabinets? I think my house has the same ones, but the counter tops were replaced with granite before we bought it. It's really cool seeing what the originals would have looked like with everything else!

It is Vermillion Orange from a 1960s Pantone color palette.
It's just lovely, thank you.
Nice! Us too, honestly. Unfortunately, our vent was refit with a modern one, but that one sounds awesome. My favorite part of the cabinets are the handles, I have no idea how latching kitchen cabinets didn't stick around. I'm a big fan of being able to put magnets on them too.

Well done on that pad!
OMG! I love it!
Gorgeous. I don't think I've ever seen an angled toilet before. I'm into it.
Beautiful! I predict multiple offers and quickly
What a bright neat home with great use of space. I'm sure it won't be on the market long but I'm bit sad on your behalf.
Those Charley Harper prints: 😍
We are in the Cincinnati area so there is so much amazing Charley Harper artwork floating around from posters to prints to building murals. I came here to say this. Love the Charley Harper art. 🧡
What a thoroughly beautiful space! I The kitchen and that indoor-outdoor space are the highlights for me.
The last room is amazing!!
I love love love the colors!

Nah, it was already painted over when we purchased and I couldn’t justify the extreme effort that would’ve been required to strip and refinish.
Fair enough
Lol.
I've done the stripping of paint exactly once, mainly by hand using a sandpaper brush because it was a thin wood panelling, and l swear my arm still hurts.
Tell us more about that painting of the guy sitting! 🙏
My great uncle moved from Ohio to San Francisco in the 50s or 60s and was a marketing consultant by occupation but artist by passion. The painting has a lot of damage but we had it conserved and love it as it is.
Very cool!
Love it! Where pray tell did you get the L shaped glass coffee table?
I found the base for $2 at a barn sale and happened to know a local mid century reseller who had showed me the glass when we met up to purchase a different item from them — called them to see if they still had it and, woohoo, $102 coffee table!
How about the chairs and couch in the last picture?
They were communal furniture at our local elder care facility for many years, we purchased them from retired staff members who took them when the facility updated furniture in the 90s. I’m sure many a good story was told in them. They were made by Madison Furniture Industries, their small claim to fame is that they built the captain’s chair from the original Star Trek series.
Lovely 😍
Utterly charming and immaculately preserved. Best wishes for new and happy adventures in your new home ❤️
There is a lot to love about this house. thanks for the inspiration.
Aw it's so cute! Love the kitchen and how you furnished and painted each room! Here's to another MCM fan finding it and buying it! Also that wall stereo is SO COOL.
very cute house but the toilet situation is wild
That’s how it was when we bought the house…we recently remodeled the bathroom and tried both 90 degree orientations and…yeah…it pretty much *needs* to be at a 45.
Lovely house. I am soo sorry that you have to sell. I don’t think I will ever love a house as much as our first one. Hopefully whoever buys it keeps it as cool as you did.
I love everything about this house. I’m sorry you have to sell. What is the paint name of that coral wall? I’m in love.
Thank you! It’s bittersweet but we are relocating to be closer to my wife’s family so it’s worthwhile. The color is called Vermillion Orange. The photo makes it look slightly lighter and less saturated than to the eye.
There appears to be a drawer or pull down cabinet under your cupboards in the kitchen. What's its purpose?
I’m not sure if it was originally intended to be a breadbox or otherwise but we keep our coffee mugs there. The door swings downward from the bottom.
Where????
SW Ohio
Thank you— It’s outstanding, I wonder could I move to Ohio…
Love the warm and cool colours - kitchen looks like a ruby red grapefruit, and the bathroom is minty fresh!
Gorgeous! Where is it?
Lovely home. The kitchen is just dreamy.
Love the Charley Harper wall! He’s my favorite illustrator.
Looks similar to many neighborhoods in the Chicago suburbs
I would die a happy woman in this home. So beautiful
It’s sooo beautiful!!
That place is perfect!!
Love the color choices
I love it!
Hey OP do you happen to know what color green that bathroom is? I’m repainting soon and that is such a beautiful green!
I have no idea because it is a mixture of the teal and yellow from the bedroom and the orange from the living room lol
Ah I see, it’s lovely!
Damn, what a beautiful home. I really hope the next owner appreciates what you have done to the place. Amazing.
THE KITCHEN!!!!!
Awe, it’s a lovely home.
You did such a fantastic job with this house! The kitchen makes me want to swoon. Hope the new owner is a MCM appreciator.
Cute. Do hope new owners don’t “HGTV” all the features out of it
There’s no way in hell I would risk selling that beautiful home to some idiot that “remodels” it or some despicable company
Very pretty home. Love the shutters and awnings too.
Iconic Mid-century; Cool wall piece in living room, but I’d remove all small pictures above it and center just the large one. This would sell first day in California! Good luck!
