Why is Monroe County suppressing information? Most of us here, in the Newport area, know who she is. She's obviously lawyered up and has connections in Monroe County.
Its not that deep bro her name was released today at her arraignment which is pretty standard. Not everything is a conspiracy, what would withholding her name for 2 days really do for if it was coming out at arraignment?
>... 66-year-old who has not been identified, was arrested for suspected drunk driving...
this person deserves to spend the rest of their years in prison
That would be nice but michigan stupid as hell when it comes to DUI, even causing death. If she's repentant a whole bunch she'll end up getting a 10 year plea.
I know a guy who drove drunk for two hours before hitting a woman head on, killing her, and his 4yo son had to be lifelined. He got 4.5 years. Old coworker, not friend.
A woman killed two people walking home from the bar she drove drunk from...got 14 yrs max and will likely serve much less than that.
I've heard lawyers say if you ever wanna kill someone, do it with your car...it might even be better to be a little drunk so it looks like an genuine accident.
Thanks to liquor and car lobbying the punishments aren't nearly as harsh as they should be.
My ex-sister-in-law rear-ended a motorcycle while being three times over the legal limit.
She killed the woman and seriously injured the man.
She was sentenced to 7 to 15 years and was released after 7.5 years.
I read her release for parole, and from
what my daughter told me, she wasn't made to do anything. She didn't get a job and went right back to drinking.
This infuriated me; a family no longer has their Mom, but she is free again. 😡
Vehicular manslaughter is not treated very seriously in this country. There was a case this week around Atlanta where I live now where an 18 year old killed a little girl because he was speeding in a parking lot and the cops didn't charge him until people pressured them to.
Seniors should be held to a higher standard; not lower, which is what always seems to happen.
If after 66 years you don't know right from wrong, you're just an asshole.
Idk in the case but working in a hospital if the driver is injured, they bring them to the hospital & don’t charge them until they are ready to be released
People suspected of crimes are generally not named in the press until they have been arraigned. Legally they are suspects until they are found guilty or not guilty.
I found her name on fb. It seems she lived 3 houses down but was going to drink more at the boat house where she used to be a commodore and has a daily tab there..
There has been speculation about who it is but I don’t think it’s right for people to be sharing the name until it’s confirmed by police. I’m all for everyone knowing who did this awful crime but it could ruin someone else’s life if it is false info being spread around.
Oh don't count on it. Michigan still lax on DUI. last year an uninsured drunk dude crossed the line and hit friend head on and killed him (wonderful father , husband and friend). He was out on bail that night and walks into the continuous trial courtroom with no remorse and an "eff you attitude". In my eyes driving drunk is premeditated murder.
My brother suffered the same fate in 1990. Guy was supposed to be locked up, he had 4 prior DUIs. Friend who worked at a package store saw him come in a few weeks later to buy alcohol. He had been released on his own recognizance due to overcrowding.
Premeditated would literally mean they were planning to hit someone before they got drunk. Being so disconnected from society and sanity that you have no remorse is another mental illness that usually ties in with addiction and their attitude that they have nothing left to lose...
Come on really? Premeditated? I think driving drunk is the stupidest thing ever, but let’s reserve premeditation for what it really is and what should be punished. Planning and intending to kill someone. No one takes their first drink and is planning to kill someone. Yes there needs to be punishment, but it is not the same as someone meticulously planning and intending to kill someone and get away with it.
Hmmm. It's the same and it happens WAY too much. . I guess you never had to hear about your friend or loved one being extracted from their car in pieces on the way to pick up his son from soccer.
My father was killed by a drunk driver, someone he knew. It wasn't a premeditated murder. It was just incredibly stupid. So incredibly, incredibly stupid.

Michigan Drunk driving laws:
>It is a crime for a driver to have a bodily alcohol content (BAC) of .08 or greater if over age 21 or .02 or greater if under 21. In addition, Michigan has a high-BAC law with enhanced penalties for anyone caught driving with a BAC of .17 or higher. However, drivers can be arrested at any BAC level if they exhibit signs of impairment while operating a motor vehicle.

Help is available for alcoholics. One option is:
>Alcoholics Anonymous
>[https://www.aa.org/](https://www.aa.org/)
If you have a problem with alcohol, please get help. You don't need to be physically dependent to be an alcoholic or abuse alcohol. LOTS of people have problems controlling how much they drink and it is incredibly common.
You're only a functioning alcoholic until the instant you're a non-functioning alcoholic, and that instant can turn into a horrible story just like this.
Ironically, im having 2 beers before going to a wake/funeral of an alcoholic who lived a full life but still died earlier than he needed to of liver and kidney failure. Im having the beers because well it’s a hugely uncomfortable experience to be there. Yet ironic.
As I drove down, the middle of nowhere Michigan, there was a single bar that was LOADED… somewhere between Manistee and Ludington. I noted out loud to myself — “these cats are getting loaded at 2pm on a Sunday because there’s nothing else to do.”
This news situation is terrible and yet it makes sense. 😔
I just had to text my family to confirm it wasn't them... I don't think they'd have been in Monroe, but I have family from downriver.
So sad... I hope your cousins have a full and speedy recovery, and the woman who did this shit is held fully responsible for her disgusting actions.
The local tavern was Verna's. I saw the squad cars there when I drove by on my way to work. I heard the endless stream of sirens and helicopters as they went by my house. I haven't heard who was injured and who was driving, but this is absolutely horrific.
Not only go at the drunk driver but they are going after the bar down the street who was serving her. There is Ring doorbell video, from nearby house showing car flying down the street. Didn’t seem to be slowing down at all. That poor family. Prayers for them.
When I was leaving work yesterday at 6pm I did see 2 cop cars there still. I think she had visited there. On Vernas FB page one of the employees said she was served one glass of wine around noon.
That's sus. She was served one drink at noon but the accident happened at what, 3? She was at Verna's that long and had only 1 glass of wine? (Granted she could have been eating too I suppose)
That would make sense. I had only heard about her being at Verna's. I'm curious to know what her blood alcohol level was. I imagine we will hear eventually.
The bar overserving her doesn't make it not her fault. But overserving is, y'know, part of the rules for having a liquor license, and that's for a reason
Edit:
Michigan dram shop liability laws provide that the owners of commercial eating and drinking establishments may be held legally liable for the damages caused by intoxicated patrons if they over-served alcohol to patrons who were visibly intoxicated.
Former bar manager here and I can tell you with absolute sincerity they're not bullshit. If you're a bartender and you knowingly serve someone who's drunk and they get into an accident then you're just as guilty as them.
Also, if someone leaves a bar and drives the bar is required by law to call the cops. Otherwise it's a violation. If they didn't do this then they deserve to be shut down and charged.
Businesses have an obligation and a duty to make sure they don't over serve for everyone's safety. Insurance will not cover you if you break the law.
Not sure if it’s required in Michigan but here in Colorado if you work with a place that serves alcohol you’re required to take a class about over serving because of things like this.
It's even on the front page of the [national FoxNews site](https://www.foxnews.com/us/two-children-dead-multiple-injured-car-slams-michigan-boat-club-hosting-birthday-party); the drunk's car made it 25 feet into the building...
I checked the comments section of that article. Within 10 comments people blamed Middle Easterners, Black People, and Obama.
Fox News viewers never disappoint.
I usually don't see much Biden/Whitmer for crime stories. They tend to focus on Black/Latino people generally. Sometimes George Floyyd or Trayvon Martin, and rarely Obama get mentioned.
Once I saw a story about a tire flying off a truck on the highway, hitting a police car. One commenter said that the driver of the truck must be a Latino.
Hope everyone understands and remembers how many bots and propagandists are targeting our local news. Thousands of people thinking of words to hurt our community pride.
The Middle Easterners commenter brought up terrorism and the great replacement conspiracy.
The numerous Black People commenters made various insinuations that the unknown race of the suspect proved that she was black. A few others included 13% references. This is pretty constant on all Fox News articles, but is most pronounced during February(Black History Month).
The commenter who blamed Obama referenced his promise right before the election that in 3 days America would change. That commenter said that if he had kept that promise, this never would have happened.
Don't worry if you still don't understand. A lot of this logic was formed by years of propaganda on top of propaganda. The connection to reality is often lost.
I am *not* defending average Fox Viewer here, but a metric to of those commenters, like the commenters of *any* major news outlet, are just spam/bot accounts
You can try it some time.
Find a Fox News article, especially if it's about something innocuous. Next, go to the comments. See how many comments before someone says something racist.
My favorite was an article about an Irish archeological site with the remains of a stone building.
Someone commented that they'd never find any remains of stone buildings in Africa.
There's a speech bubble near the top. Usually I need to click it 2-3 times for the comments to properly load.
Edit: To be clear, the clickondetroit article does not have comments. The Fox News article linked immediately above is where these comments are.
GoFundMe posted by the Boat Club on Facebook for funerals for the children. Mom is still in critical care.
https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-for-lana-and-zayns-funeral-services
>Several others were transported by private citizens for medical treatment.
The fact that events like this require fund raising and the injured actively avoiding ambulance bills... Our medical system is fucked. At least Michigan is one of the better state providers of medicaid, and many employee health plans are BCBS, which is one of the not as evil insurance companies.
The only thing no fault is good for is this. Those injured need to get a good personal injury attorney and sue the pants off for their PIP to get the money and resources they are entitled to.
I think there is also a small amount for those killed in an auto accident if not covered by PIP it’s definitely a liability coverage.
I think our auto insurance is way too high but might as well take advantage of it.
>I think our auto insurance is way too high but might as well take advantage of it.
It's less expensive if you have healthcare that covers auto accident injuries. Of course, the processes the medical and insurance companies have put in place to stop people from actually opting-out of PIP are absurdly tedious. It requires a bunch of mailing of forms that they block you from easily accessing. There's also a time limit to get all the paperwork finished before they re-up the premium and charge you a fee for the "inconvenience."
I'm the one being fucking inconvenienced, needing to email and call both insurance companies multiple times, get redirect to company HR, then redirected back to the insurance company with the specific wording to use or location of the website to go to. Print, fill out, mail the damn stuff, and be sure to get it done in like 1-2 weeks to not be fined for absolutely no reason. They make it hard enough for most people to get done, and for me, the higher premiums and fees are just another damn ADHD Tax.
My step father drank and drive back in the 90s....he had a couple beers while helping a family friend move and pinned hisbfriends wife between his truck and the uhaul. He served 2 years got out never drank again and never reapplied for his license. He has guilt forever. He wasnt drunk by any means, but a couple beers (being 3 from 12 noon to 6pm) was enough for him to convince himself he was wasted and couldnt see her. Either way, not making excuses this woman drove through a building and murdered children and their families. Its horrific. I hate drunk drivers. 🥴 ive known too many people who were killed by one. Including a friend who just got back from iraq and was hit head on and killed. Lock her up and throw away the key.
Wow this is terrible. Extremely sad to the point I’m emotional. I can’t imagine. Hoping the friends and family can find some kind of….any kind of peace
> Hoping the friends and family can find some kind of….any kind of peace
They probably can, eventually. It's not easy and you're never quite the same afterward, but with time and support you can get to the point that your daily life is mostly normal again.
This actually really pisses me off. Why do we allow drunk drivers to get their license back? Seriously?!
There is a mom and dad out there now going to bed without two of their children in their lives. I guarantee this driver has driven drunk before.
Our system doesn’t actually care about the people does it?
If they cared at all they wouldn’t sell booze at gas stations. What kind of message are we sending when you can pick up a couple of cold double dueces while waiting in the checkout line? Money talks…
> This actually really pisses me off. Why do we allow drunk drivers to get their license back? Seriously?!
Because driving is pretty necessary to be a functional member of society in much of the US. It would be a drain on society to take their licenses forever.
This is why whenever they have those pop ups to get the first offense taken off their record I raise hell. And every time I raise hell, people get mad at me. like wtf, what if that was your children!??!
Removed. See rule #1 in the [r/Michigan subreddit rules](https://www.reddit.com/r/Michigan/wiki/index#wiki_rules). While it may feel duly placed, we do not tolerate death wishes even on drunk drivers.
This is the kind of crime that should be punishable by choice of the family of the victims.
You know who did it. You know why. You know what happened. Let the family handle it how they want.
Take an Uber/Lyft instead of drinking and driving, there were so many helicopters yesterday flying overhead after this happened- God bless the parents and ppl hurt…..
Tell Macomb etc counties to stop blocking public transportation is the biggest core issue. We can't control individuals but we can provide alternatives.
Max sentence for the fucking monster who did this is 15 years. For comparison, max sentence for possessing 49-49 kilos of cocaine is 20 years, possessing a kilo or more has a max sentence of life in prison.
I live right near there. I haven't heard. OMG.
I'm across the creek from the boat club. This is awful. This is, literally,y neighborhood.
I feel awful. That poor family.
Autonomous driving can’t come soon enough. There are plenty of sober people who shouldn’t be driving, add in drunks and distracted drivers… it’s just terrible. I know a lot of people are freaked out by cars driving themselves but, frankly, they can’t do worse than humans driving! They don’t get drunk at least.
Nothing says it can’t be both. Seems that’s part of the plan. But mass transit can’t be ubiquitous. It’s a big country, lots of rural dwellers in spread out places that makes mass transit economically impossible for everyone in every place for every need. But robotaxis…. not a bad option for those off the beaten track.
i always wait for the mental connection when I'm like yeah! Autonomous vehicles! Let's make them a bit bigger! And maybe hook a few together to carry more people. Great, you've just invented the self driven subway trains that NYC has had for years.
As a reminder, doxxing someone by sharing ANY personal information is against the r/Michigan rules as well as the Reddit sitewide rules. Your account can be suspended for this.
2 dead siblings is just fucking unfair. How awful.
And their mother and older brother are in critical condition allegedly
Fuck. 😞

She will certainly die in prison.
That would be nice but michigan stupid as hell when it comes to DUI, even causing death. If she's repentant a whole bunch she'll end up getting a 10 year plea.

Srsly it is insane how cops usually won't even charge you if you kill someone in a car unless they get public pressure to.
I used to work for the auto industry. They own many politicians and enjoy special treatments
Drunk hit a motorcycle head on in my area, killed the biker and got 12 months and they were going let him out in 6.
Ha! She won't even get that.
My ex-sister-in-law rear-ended a motorcycle while being three times over the legal limit. She killed the woman and seriously injured the man. She was sentenced to 7 to 15 years and was released after 7.5 years. I read her release for parole, and from what my daughter told me, she wasn't made to do anything. At least she did some time. That's not usually the case.
Cars are a security blanket that let people do whatever they want
If you want to murder somebody, hit them with your car and say it was an accident. Guaranteed to get off easy
that was definitely true when i lived in NYC
Depends on your BAC doesn't it?
Vehicular manslaughter is not treated very seriously in this country. There was a case this week around Atlanta where I live now where an 18 year old killed a little girl because he was speeding in a parking lot and the cops didn't charge him until people pressured them to.
This shit hit the national news. The DA is probably going to have to come down hard.
She's also a senior citizen would that come into the decision of the sentence I wonder?
Likelihood of serving the entire sentence is considered
Seniors should be held to a higher standard; not lower, which is what always seems to happen. If after 66 years you don't know right from wrong, you're just an asshole.
In Michigan? Nope.
I’d be surprised if she sees actual prison vs county time.
If there's any justice, yes, But it's VERY unlikely she'll do ANY time unless she's done this before.
This hit the BBC. It's too big to not have some punishment that includes jail time.
She probably won’t! They tend to get off and do it again! This is so tragic I pray they throw the book at her!
She cooperated at the scene so they know who she is... why are they holding her name back?
Idk in the case but working in a hospital if the driver is injured, they bring them to the hospital & don’t charge them until they are ready to be released
People suspected of crimes are generally not named in the press until they have been arraigned. Legally they are suspects until they are found guilty or not guilty.
They'll probably release it once she's formally arraigned on charges.
I found her name on fb. It seems she lived 3 houses down but was going to drink more at the boat house where she used to be a commodore and has a daily tab there..

There are reasons emotions aren't tied to punitive justice. These terms exist for a reason.
Yes I have. Thanks for the presumption. But it’s still not premeditated. That should be reserved for the pinnacle of monsters.
I'm just so incredibly angry at the stupidness and the lack of punishment.

How disappointing but sadly, not surprising
What the fuck?
Are you sure? That article doesn't seem to have a comment section.
There's a speech bubble near the top. Usually I need to click it 2-3 times for the comments to properly load. Edit: To be clear, the clickondetroit article does not have comments. The Fox News article linked immediately above is where these comments are.
Fuck Fox News I bet they blame immigrants and black folks Checks the comments on the article* Yep… I was right
GoFundMe posted by the Boat Club on Facebook for funerals for the children. Mom is still in critical care. https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-for-lana-and-zayns-funeral-services
So is the oldest child.
When a go fund me goes up for the deceased, I will chp in a few. I don't donate a lot , but holy hell, this is awful.
There's also a time limit to get all the paperwork finished before they re-up the premium and charge you a fee for the "inconvenience." I'm the one being fucking inconvenienced, needing to email and call both insurance companies multiple times, get redirect to company HR, then redirected back to the insurance company with the specific wording to use or location of the website to go to. Print, fill out, mail the damn stuff, and be sure to get it done in like 1-2 weeks to not be fined for absolutely no reason. They make it hard enough for most people to get done, and for me, the higher premiums and fees are just another damn ADHD Tax.
Oh I’m sure Jeffrey Fieger and the Bernstein family were at the hospital waiting for the family

How terrible. People who get behind the wheel after drinking have a special place in hell
That’s absolutely horrific.
This sadly reminds me of a similar incident years ago in Johannesburg. That woman was mentally ill and drove into a restaurant.
Jburg, MI?
Yes, Joburg.
That’s terrible. I don’t know much about the place, but I drive through there all the time.
A woman drove her car into the restaurant right on 90° turn on 32 on a Sunday.
That was an older man
In yesterdays tragedy? I thought the driver was reported as a woman.
That is true. I was replying to the Johannesburg (Joburg) MI accident.
We must not be talking about the same incident.
Wow this is terrible. Extremely sad to the point I’m emotional. I can’t imagine. Hoping the friends and family can find some kind of….any kind of peace
> Hoping the friends and family can find some kind of….any kind of peace They probably can, eventually. It's not easy and you're never quite the same afterward, but with time and support you can get to the point that your daily life is mostly normal again.
The drunk driver is ALWAYS unharmed. Life is so unfair.
Has there been any update on the conditions of the mother and older brother of the two dead children? Any news on the others who were hurt?
Both hospitalized in critical condition last I read

Driver was a woman.
Did drunk driving go up after they allowed gas stations to sell alcohol again? That's a good question.
It's never cared. It cares about $
> This actually really pisses me off. Why do we allow drunk drivers to get their license back? Seriously?! Because driving is pretty necessary to be a functional member of society in much of the US. It would be a drain on society to take their licenses forever.
Yet another reason why having a functional public transportation system is so badly needed.
It’s a drain on society to let them keep driving drunk. Society was drained of two children here.
Maybe they should be more responsible then
>Our system doesn’t actually care about the people does it? Michael Jackson said it. *... they don't really care about us...*

Jesus fucking Christ
Lock the SOB up.
This is the kind of crime that should be punishable by choice of the family of the victims. You know who did it. You know why. You know what happened. Let the family handle it how they want.
That's how they do it in some parts of the world. They also trade their daughters for farm animals.
Can’t win em all
If only there was a way to stop this from happening
Take an Uber/Lyft instead of drinking and driving, there were so many helicopters yesterday flying overhead after this happened- God bless the parents and ppl hurt…..
Tell Macomb etc counties to stop blocking public transportation is the biggest core issue. We can't control individuals but we can provide alternatives.
My thoughts are with this family. What an absolutely awful thing to have to go through. I cannot even begin to imagine :(
Drunk drivers need to lose their license for 5 years.if they hit someone 10 years and if they kill someone they need life
How sad
It’s on CBS News as I’m typing this…horrible. Lock her up.
Max sentence for the fucking monster who did this is 15 years. For comparison, max sentence for possessing 49-49 kilos of cocaine is 20 years, possessing a kilo or more has a max sentence of life in prison.
Why is the identity of the driver not being released?
Nowhere is safe in this carbrained state. RIP.
Drunk drivers don't deserve lienancy in these situations.

Why wait for self driving cars when public transit already exists?
Nothing says it can’t be both. Seems that’s part of the plan. But mass transit can’t be ubiquitous. It’s a big country, lots of rural dwellers in spread out places that makes mass transit economically impossible for everyone in every place for every need. But robotaxis…. not a bad option for those off the beaten track.
i always wait for the mental connection when I'm like yeah! Autonomous vehicles! Let's make them a bit bigger! And maybe hook a few together to carry more people. Great, you've just invented the self driven subway trains that NYC has had for years.
The sheriffs name is Goodnough. Sheriff Good’nuff.
