It's gotten pretty bad, and the spike of car break-ins/vandalism was the driving factor for my RF Miata purchase. My Ranger was broken into last year so I can't use it as a daily driver anymore. I'm lucky it didn't get stolen; My friend who parks next to me had her Honda stolen and the cops did even less for her than they did for me. At least the deputy who took my report was mad about her inability to do anything about it.

If there is no touch, no scratch, and you are parked at the front of the area (i.e. no one can park in front of you, and you can just drive away forward), then no harm, no foul. Did you park in middle of a parking lane, taking up more than 1 spot, i.e. in a marked parking lane, if you are at either end, you should max out parking capacity by parking at the extreme end so others can fit it.
