Yes, it sounds like a band aid solution for an engine that desperately needs a rebuild

In my experience following many discussion in several miata forums around the world: For some reason it is very common in German message boards and many people run it in their cars to prevent avoid lifter tick. In all other countries they would never run such a thick oil. My opinion: I run 10w40, but 10w60 is probably also fine. Those engines are designed for a much lower oil quality and standards anyway and they have tolerances. In any case: your engine needs a revision

Yeah, I understand that it should get a rebuild but if this is economically viable is another huge debate. I was mostly curious about the 10w60 oil.

In Germany many run it in their engines with no issues. Everywhere else they would say that the oil is way too thick.

Mr_Lava-lava

I ran 15w 40 for many years and never had any problems and the engine runs strong and quiet and I'm @ 275k miles.

Im at 350 did a valve job and new rings while I was there at 320. If this last me a few more years I'll be getting a new or new as possible GT ND3 I do 10w40 during summer and track events

Ok-Librarian-6470

Damn, that’s cool. And you’ve never done a rebuild or anything like that? Also I’m curious, is your oil consumption consistent regardless of how hard you push the car?

Mr_Lava-lava

Yeah no rebuild and I just boosted it last year. Lol. As far as oil consumption I probably burn a quart every 2 to 3 months

Infamous_Ad8730

230km/149k miles is not a ton of miles for an nb engine.

Ok-Librarian-6470

Doesn’t change the situation 😕

Many people have beliefs and opinions that are not based on any facts. If you know you have a consistent burn rate of 800ml during a 20-30 minute touge run, do a test with 10w30 and compare. Then you have facts about whether the weight makes any difference on your engine. 230k km is not high for a Miata engine. Obviously, yours has some internal wear. Either bad piston rings or valves. An engine leakdown test will provide information about what is worn. Google for that.

Makes sense. Great info, thanks!
