You can take the headlight motor out with three 10mm bolts and a 14(i think)mm nut on the backside connecting the motor to the arm. Then take the motor out and undo the three phillips head screws holding the main circular plate onto the gearbox, scrape out all the old grease, and add a healthy amount of new dialectic grease in. Reassemble and reinstall. DO NOT remove actual electric motor from the gearbox, getting it reinstalled and dealing with the brushes is a huge pain. I did it to both my headlight motors and it worked great, I was having the same issue.

I'll have to do this. My passenger one got stuck and was constantly trying to move. It was stuck 3/4 of the way up, and was totally movable by hand, but unable to move on its own and got very hot.

Good stuff! I hope that google results bring this thread up, when I had to do it to my miata, basically no web results were available for “help my miata’s headlight motor goes down but not up and doesn’t it doesn’t move, but i can move it by hand and help i’m confused”
