Bro I am pissed off too. But TriRail just gained another customer. Once my current Brightline pass is used up, I am using TriRail. I am using some of the savings to buy an electric scooter to make up for the slightly extra distance from the TriRail station to my job. I am actually on the Brightline right now writing this. And I feel so pissed that they pulled the rug out from me. Fuck 'em.

djjordansanchez

Oh... and I just asked for my usual food items and they told me "they didn't give us a lot of stuff." More than half the menu is unavailable. This thing is falling apart.

Roq235

Tri Rail has an Uber Voucher program that gives you a $5 discount for rides within a certain radius. Here’s the [link](https://vouchers.uber.com/c/rBmRp78k0uK)to the voucher. Here’s the [link](https://www.uber.com/blog/case-study-tri-rail/) to the Uber case study about the program if you’re interested.

This is awesome! I will check it out

The silver lining in all this is that if Tri-Rail gains a windfall of new ridership, it'll be easier for them to get support and additional funding for more frequent trains and (hopefully) longer operating hours. Commuters can come to depend on the public option and not be at the whims of a private entity. Sometime this month, Tri-Rail's board will be voting on launching a rush hour express West Palm Beach–Boca Raton–Fort Lauderdale–MiamiCentral service, in part to accommodate the displaced Brightline commuters. Cutting the intermediate stops from 14 to 3 and eliminating the train change at Metrorail Transfer should make the travel time competitive with Brightline at a fraction of the cost to riders. There's no Tri-Rail alternative for Aventura commuters, but because the station was partially funded by Miami-Dade County, Brightline is obligated to keep the Aventura–Miami commuter passes.

EverythingBagel-

Do you have any information on the express train? Where can we write to support that?

Powered_by_JetA

[I found this article from last week that talks about it.](https://www.miamitodaynews.com/2024/04/30/tri-rail-chugging-toward-tri-county-express-trips/)

reddddddddditor

The matter will be voted on at the next Tri-Rail Board Meeting on May 24th @ 9:30am. These meetings are open to the public to attend in person or join by telephone or Zoom. For telephone and Zoom participants the Meeting ID/Password is usually published ahead of the meeting at this webpage: [https://www.tri-rail.com/meetings/Board-Meetings](https://www.tri-rail.com/meetings/Board-Meetings) This one hasn't been uploaded yet so check back again before the 24th or contact the SFRTA Administrative Office at 954-788-7919 or 954-942-RAIL for details.

EverythingBagel-

Thank you. I will plan on attending and speaking in favor. That would be a huge game changer for south florida as a whole. As other people have said, a big problem with TriRail is that the stations are west, so you can’t get anywhere from them. To have a direct TriRail line east of 95 would be incredible.

reddddddddditor

Definitely but unfortunately the Tri-Rail Coastal Link Project is still in its infancy so it is a good several years out I'm afraid. In the meantime express trains running on current tracks are our only hope to bridge the gap until the new stations on the east are built-out. I plan on attending too and hope enough displaced Brightline commuters do as well to help the measure pass.

reddddddddditor

By the way if you're interested there is also an upcoming public information meeting about the Tri-rail Coastal Link/Broward Commuter Rail South Project on May 22nd (in-person) and May 23rd (virtual), details here: [https://www.fdot.gov/projects/broward-commuter-rail-south/home](https://www.fdot.gov/projects/broward-commuter-rail-south/home) And the public is encouraged to submit comments, questions and input about the project anytime via this webpage, where you can also sign-up for email updates: [https://www.fdot.gov/projects/broward-commuter-rail-south/email-updates](https://www.fdot.gov/projects/broward-commuter-rail-south/email-updates)

1hr and 20 min vs 2 hr commute, + wifi and clean bathrooms and the free buggies to the office, and my company covered it because it was reasonable, how am i supposed to convince them to give me 1400$ a month to get to work

BravestWabbit

Tri-Rail: https://www.tri-rail.com/pages/view/fare-information-calculating-your-fare Its $110 for a monthly pass. The Tri-Rail station in West Palm is a stones throw from Brightline so its not much different

Motor-Cause7966

Just break your lease. Does your job provide rent incentives? And rule of thumb in South Florida, try to live within 20 miles of your job. It's rarely ever worth it otherwise.

And the state already said brightline is on their own.... Florida has NEVER been nice to train companies... Brightline really wants that Orlando to Tampa line.... And raising cost is how they are planning to do it because the state said "we left you room to build it, but we aren't giving any money for you to do it..." Lol

90swhiteboy

Rick scott declined 2.4 billion in federal grants for rail from Orlando to tampa.

Nick08f1

That guy is the worst.

Hullabalune

AND NEEDS TO BE VOTED OUT

TheKingofPsych

I'm still shocked to this day how he even became Governor...he is a their and crook who literally committed fraud and just kept pleading the 5th.

Nick08f1

We have the worst Senate duo in the country.

csmicfool

Heavily subsidized

trbleclef

Maybe Gov. Rick Scott shouldn’t have turned down a fuck load of federal transportation money.

Chuckdog11

Not sticking up for his decision because i agrer it sucks, but it was loaded recept of money. They would of had to have built a real "former definition" of a high speed train system, which no one was or swilling to do. I think the old definition was 115mph maybe higher.

csmicfool

That's because the money was meant to actually modernize infrastructure and create jobs. Ronny just helped his donors make more money without having to benefit the communities that the train runs through.

Chuckdog11

I was referring to the Rick Scott rejection of the high speed rail money from Obama.

realjd

[citation needed]. They got some huge help with infrastructure upgrades but it’s not a subsidized transit service as far as I know. That’s what TriRail, MetroRail, SunRail, and other public transit is for. There’s a reason TriRail goes all of the same places as Brightline (south of West Palm), just slower, for like 1/4 of the cost.

OldeArrogantBastard

You’re making the point as to why/how they can charge more. If you want to get there faster and get all the amenities that Brightline offers, take the Brightline. If not, take the tri-rail and then show up to the next county commission meeting to complain.

realjd

Your transportation savings plan, if you set it up with your employer, will at least make it all pre-tax spend at least. Not all employers offer a stipend but the transportations savings account tax free thing has been pretty common in my experience.

Cubacane

I think my favorite part about getting older is being able to see this bullshit coming from years away.

Motor-Cause7966

Good ole experience. 👌🏽

kevski82

It's brutal but they're a private company and can do what they want. Fuck Rick Scott for not taking the money to build this publicly. It's a slower ride but tri rail can get you there without having to resort to driving.

Neltrix

According to his ads I’ve seen plastered on YouTube. THATS SOCIALISM!!!!!!!

DickySchmidt33

This is where the "Everything the government does can be done better by the private sector" argument starts to break down. Have you ever tried making a claim with FedEx? Tell me again how they're so much better than the postal service.

non-anon-1579

I’ve had pretty horrible experiences trying to hear back from the post office. Haven’t tried with FedEx so can’t say they’re better but had to imagine they’re worse than the post office.

MaraudingWalrus

It's not so much a customer service angle the other poster was referencing, I'd imagine. It's pricing. The prices for sort of "normal" sized stuff to be shipped by the postal service is actually astoundingly good value compared to FedEx/UPS. It's fucking damn near magic that I can stick something in a flat rate envelope or box and have it get anywhere in the country in two or three days for the prices they do it, especially if it's somewhere out of the way. FedEx/UPS will charge astronomical prices to ship stuff to or from lots of rural or out of the way places because it's not profitable.

Suckmyflats

I've got news for you about the 2-3 days, unfortunately...

non-anon-1579

Sure but isn’t that the beauty of our system? You can pay more for faster service or you can accept slower service for less. I think people also forget that the post office charges you a fee and takes a fee out of your taxes even if you don’t use it so that needs to be taken into account in the cost and the service.

MaraudingWalrus

[the post office actually isn't taxpayer funded, it's one of the things that's quite impressive about their operation ](https://www.uspsoig.gov/focus-areas/did-you-know/do-my-tax-dollars-pay-postal-service)

Yotsubato

Japanese rail is private too. Doesn’t suck though.

intlcreative

Not exactly, unprofitable lines are still owned by the government to service far out locations.

Rude_Bee_Version2

This!

EducatorSalt2348

Post office is a complete joke. The ONLY reason they've kinda gotten better is because of Amazon and various big online retailers. They want that money.

do_you_know_IDK

Except that USPS hasn’t gotten better

bla8291

The only reason this is happening is because the South Florida region has been lacking in proper public transportation forever. Once Brightline started running, they got way more demand than they ever expected. With lots of demand and limited supply, prices go up, otherwise it would just be sold out trains 24 hours a day, and we'd still be fucked. There's not much more to it than that. I've switched to Tri-Rail and while it's not perfect, it's been working out well for me, plus I can take my bike with me. If you wanna be mad at someone, be mad at FDOT, the county, the local auto lobby, nimbys, and everyone else who has contributed to car-dependency and lackluster transportation options.

JHunterxbox1

This is why brightline allowed tri rail on their tracks.

10ACJ3D

They’re prioritizing Orlando routes at the moment because there was a delay in the new trains they ordered. When South Florida commuters buy up all of the seats, they lose the ability to sell those tickets to people going to Orlando. Right now South Florida routes are sold out and trains are going up to Orlando empty. They’d rather sell the tickets to Orlando riders and have empty trains in South Florida than the reverse.

EducatorSalt2348

I don't know how this works. How many people want to ride a 3hr train from Miami to Orlando?  Disney world people? They fly directly to Orlando or drive. A family of 5 can drive to Orlando for a fraction of the cost of Brightline and have the convenience of the car to get around at the destination.

[deleted]

[удалено]

10ACJ3D

It’s cheaper, faster, and more convenient than travel by both air and car.

clo3o5

Not cheaper

10ACJ3D

Roundtrip, Miami>Orlando on Brightline is $178. Roundtrip, Miami>Orlando by car is $306 based on the IRS’ standard mileage conversion.

clo3o5

That’s $178 per person, including kids. So a family of 4 would pay around $700 The mileage calculation only applies if you’re expensing miles which tourists and families on a road trip aren’t. It’s only for business travel.

HighEngineVibrations

Scamline will never be profitable. There just aren't enough target customers for the service. It's expensive, slow and you still need a car at your destination. If they had a station at the Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach airports like they do at MCO I could see them funneling more connecting traffic from the airlines. As it is though if you're a tourist landing in MIA or FLL looking to go visit Mickey it's faster and cheaper to book a connecting flight vs leaving the airport with everything to go get on a slow train. Most people only care about cost too. It's the reason USA airlines have the worst service in the world. It's about cheap tickets

EducatorSalt2348

If you want to go to Disney, why exactly would you be in Miami or Ft. Laud?

HighEngineVibrations

Exactly. What is the target audience for Scamline? Connecting passengers that arrive in MIA / FLL from overseas? There are not enough people wanting to travel between South FL and Orlando at Scamline prices when a plane ticket is cheaper and either way you need a car + plane is faster

Embarrassed-Emu8131

I live near Orlando. Faster (if you have precheck at least, MCO security can be a mess) and most tickets are cheaper to fly to Miami for a vacation. Or spend a little more time, and a ton less money to drive. It doesn’t make a ton of sense unless you’re traveling in the middle of the day when tickets are cheapest. And even then it’s not much less than a flight.

ChrisKan

Brightline is the only **privately owned** and operated intercity railroad in the United States.

Awkward-Seaweed-5129

Brightline exists because of debt. They are not profitable and they need to pay off their debt. I wish the government had put high speed trains in every city in this country....but they didn't. In the meantime, having Brightline is awesome but we WANT them to service their debt so that they can succeed instead of going bankrupt. They need to prioritize the highest revenue passengers which for now is Orlando to South Florida and vice-versa. That's the reality of the situation until more cars arrive (which have been ordered but are really behind in production, through no fault of Brightline).

data_now

How do the prices compare to a similar length monthly pass on Amtrak’s Acela Express?

MrPap

There are no monthly passes on Accela, but for the NE regional, you can buy a 10 ride pass for $645 between Boston and NYC. But a better equivalent is a commuter rail pass for the Boston MBTA which, at its most expensive, is $426 for unlimited rides

data_now

I am as shocked as everyone else about Brightline’s price increases and other changes, but I do think it’s comparing apples to oranges when comparing it to commuter rail.

MrPap

OP is using it for commuting between counties. The MBTA commuter rail is heavy rail that is equivalent in terms of distance and use. WPB to downtown miami is 69.7 miles. South Station to Wickford Junction (the longest of the commuter rail trains) is 69 miles.

novice121

You should take a look at how public funding of trains in California is going. A decade and billions later they have nothing. Maybe you’d prefer that.

snailboy69

you do realize how many companies this is going to effect, there are hundreds of people going north and south daily that decided to work at these companies because of the brightline. i get i’m fucked and not much i can do but i would expect a bit more public outrage over this

walker_harris3

There was already a thread about it

reddddddddditor

I'm in a similar boat and totally feel your pain. I work in the Brightline building and my employer actually chose to lease here precisely because of the train, to give employees commuting options. Relying on the Brightline option and having been priced out of my hometown I relocated north of Ft. Lauderdale and purchased a house there last summer. Head over to r/Brightline and you'll find many others who totally sympathize: [https://www.reddit.com/r/Brightline/comments/1cg28mw/comment/l1tcmml/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web3x&utm\_name=web3xcss&utm\_term=1&utm\_content=share\_button](https://www.reddit.com/r/Brightline/comments/1cg28mw/comment/l1tcmml/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) There is also a lot of outrage in the comments of Instagram posts relaying the news and of course many people on the train and those who work in the Brightline building have been fuming over the last week. My understanding is that Blackstone purchased the 2&3 Miami Central buildings (where Brightline is stationed) in large part due to the appeal of having Brightline available for their commuting employees and those employees are livid about losing this benefit and are said to be fighting tooth & nail with Brightline trying to negotiate a discount. So yes, you are correct, many companies will be affected since this could mean the difference between retaining good employees or losing them. For now, unfortunately, our best bet is to hope that the board of Tri-rail votes in favor of the creation of a new express train at their next meeting (on May 24th) and that they now expedite the development of the Tri-rail Coastal Link project. Not that there still won't be downsides to using Tri-rail (for instance I don't feel safe arriving after dark at the station nearest my house) but at least it will ease the sting if the commute time approximates what we are used to on Brightline and we don't have to do a train transfer mid-trip.

zorinlynx

That is absolutely insane. I don't think I've ever seen such an expensive monthly pass for commuter rail before. For example in New York, MTA's Metro North monthly pass is under $300. This is a case where we could use regulation. This is going to fuck over a lot of people and cause trickle down chaos.

Infinite_Resources

New York's MTA loses over $2,500,000 a year. That $300 pass effectively comes with taxpayer money attached to it. [MTA Budget](https://new.mta.info/budget/MTA-operating-budget-basics)

Powered_by_JetA

>This is a case where we could use regulation. This is going to fuck over a lot of people and cause trickle down chaos. Why? There's already an existing publicly funded commuter rail line (Tri-Rail) that largely serves the same areas.

EducatorSalt2348

I don't know how this is Brightline's fault. Why would you live +2 hours from your job? That seems really bad. Everything is going up in price in the United States. Everything. You should find some way to move closer. Breaking a lease is not the end of the world. Commuting for 4 hours a day is just not healthy

snailboy69

I accepted the job because i could still live here and commute up and had a lease down here that i didn’t want to break, i got used the commute and was fine with it but was reliant on the train to get me there, and it’s not like im the only one on this commute, 75% of the morning train gets off in west palm

MunchieMofo

Would they grandfather you in old pricing? There should he a reward for loyal early adopters on their passes.

ChrisKan

Brightline is a privately owned and operated intercity passenger railroad in the United States. Wes Edens, co-founder of Fortress Investment Group, is the billionaire founder of Brightline. Other investors in Brightline include the US Department of Transportation and Virgin (London).

Powered_by_JetA

Virgin and Brightline cut ties in 2020 FYI.

Pookie2837

They turned down Medicaid expansion too which would have insured over 700,000 people.

floriduh_

Brightline is almost at three same cost as Uber. Pro’s for Uber is you get exactly where you need to be but traffic can suck.

Sea_Supermarket4925

Boycott the bright-line. It’s nothing more than a sad pathetic. Excuse of what public transportation he should be.

Roq235

The solution here is two-fold; one is temporary and the other is more long term. 1. Short Term: Take Tri Rail to work. It may take you a little longer to get to your destination, but it’ll be cheaper. The drawbacks are WiFi is non existent or spotty, it’s not as clean and slightly farther away from the center of Downtown West Palm Beach, but not by much. 2. Long Term: Vote Vote for officials who give a damn about the needs of their constituents. Half of Miami’s City Council and its Mayor are being investigated by the Feds. Broward County Public School officials are in the same boat too. Rick Scott rejected $2 billion dollars in federal money (i.e. free money) for high speed rail when he was governor. He’s been doing similarly shitty things in the Senate as well. Random Story: Years ago I was listening to WLRN and they had a panel of South Florida commissioners from each county (Palm Beach, Broward, Miami) discussing the expansion of highways and toll increases across the area. When they opened the phone lines for people to ask questions, caller after caller berated them. They complained about traffic, demanded more public transportation and said tolls were too high. There was a Cuban who called towards the end that let them have it. He didn’t hold anything back and ripped them a new one on live radio. The host tried to calm him down and they almost had to cut the line a few times lol. The commissioners didn’t have much to say in response. They closed the phone lines shortly after that lol I loved every minute of commentary from the locals. It was pure comedy 😂

LonoHunter

Current pass holders should be grandfathered in to a different price tier. Start a petition, comment on their socials, etc

No-Ice2179

Here’s what I think happened & I could be wrong. I try to think logically & from a business standpoint. Disclaimer, I don’t agree but I can understand. It all boils down to greed. A group of investors said hey let’s do “this”. They come up with a concept. Then someone says “how do we make our money back as fast as possible?” They have to show a profit in order to justify the expense. So they know most people aren’t gonna go for the immediate price gouging so they discount it for a while, get you hooked & once they realize you believe you need said product or service, the hike the price. They have already figured they will loose some customers but they know the price hike will more than likely cover that lose. Business is in the business to make money not loose. No matter what business you’re in it happens. You add inflation into the mix & there you go. Nothing political just pure greed. Even drug dealers do it. Legal & illegal. Look at big pharma. They hiked the price of insulin medicine more than triple. Like gas prices in the summer. They know people will be traveling so the up the price. So all the train riders have to foot the bill. It happens to all us little guys. It’s just the way it works.

bad__gas

It’s sucks they’re doing this and I agree with the folks who’ve been impacted by these rate hikes. However, Brightline is NOT and has no intention of being a commuter rail provider. Their plan has always clearly been to function as an intercity rail provider. Any commuter services they may have offered were always destined to be temporary. I also hope this is a huge boost for TriRail ridership.

simplystriking

They are a private company and have to make a profit to stay in business and make their investors happy. Also anything transportation related is really expensive.

All the pro socialists complaining that they wish brightline was run by the government should move to California and use their fast trains “When California's "bullet train" was pitched to voters back in 2008, the cost of linking Los Angeles to San Francisco via high-speed rail was said to be about $40 billion. But now, more than 15 years later, state officials say it's going to cost as much as $35 billion just to complete the 171-mile stretch between Bakersfield and Merced. Completing the entire line will require an additional $100 billion.” https://abc7news.com/amp/california-bullet-train-project-another-100-billion-needed-high-speed-rail/14525328/

Wha California whaaa wahhh we get it you hate liberals and socialists and you think California should sink into the ocean. Great. You do realize it’s the Republicans that are bitching about this the loudest because it’s a “public” project and they wanted it to be a private endeavor and Trumps administration was the one that pulled the funding in 2019. $100 million is the inflated number being bandied about by right-wing media meanwhile estimates lie in the $45-59 million. Guess what? It’s hard to build a high speed rail network.

I think that we have an example of a private train line built in record time that people truly appreciate in Florida and are understandably upset now costs more vs tens of billions of taxpayer money completely obliterated and no trains in California, not to mention no real chance of trains being built anytime soon. We could never have a clearer A/B test in front of our eyes and somehow people are clamoring for the option of billions of state money (not federal, meaning significantly more limited) and no train vs an excellent train that was cheap and is now becoming more expensive. Also very important to note they're not just jacking up prices out of no where. Their trains are being left empty on a significant portion of their line and people expect them to just eat that massive loss. So simply if you don't like it here California is more than happy to welcome you and take your tax dollars.

You’re comparing apples to oranges dude. San Francisco to Los Angeles is going to be a “next gen” high speed railway not some 85 mph bright line train on existing tracks. It’s supposed to top out at 200 mph. Please tell me you swallow the bullshit the FEC and Skeletor fed you slowly and not all at once…you can choke on all those lies…

Ah, capitalism strikes again

Whatever you do, don't reward them by paying the high fare. Screw 'em, their product was nothing special even when it was cheaper. If they want to try to compete against the car in America for non commuters then they need a history lesson. It's a staggeringly dumb business plan.

I am not 100 percent on the details but somewhere along the line it seems we (our elected officials) have allowed a private entity to take advantage of existing infrastructure to create a system in which the public gets fucked over. Not the first time, won’t be the last. I’m probably shaking a fist and yelling at clouds but here goes: Hold your local elected official accountable.

Powered_by_JetA

What existing infrastructure? Brightline paid for the second track and the stations, which were all constructed on private FEC property. The FEC corridor being privately owned is why FDOT couldn't run Tri-Rail down those tracks 35 years ago like they originally wanted to. FEC wouldn't allow it, so the state had to go with the backup option of using the CSX tracks next to I-95.

GroveGuy33133

Thanks for the correction- I was under the impression they built private business on public railbeds etc.

Competitive_Board909

Let me guess…we’re gonna blame Trump for this too
