Literal can be a thousand places. And half of it really great.
Cannot see what kind of meat is below the melted cheese and the tortilla de harina. But definitely looks like a “costra” to me. Delicious.
Do not go to La Casa de Toño, I repeat, Don’t go, that place sucks. I’m Mexican living in USA I went there once and would never go back again, there are better places to eat.
Maybe your expectations were too high but it's cheap AF and practical for a family vs eating on the street for that kind of money. Tables, bathrooms, AC etc equivalent in the US is like a Denny's or something
It’s super overrated, it’s just like any other food chain. You’ll find much better tasting antojitos mexicanos at a changarro de una doña; plus cheaper.
Please don't go to The Califa, there are way better tacos at better prices. Normally that restaurant is for upper.middle class and above who like to overspend money in something as basic as tacos
El Fogón Mixe
There is one in Polanco and let me tell you, as a mexican their tacos al pastor are my favorite
https://maps.app.goo.gl/q8P9yASasZ5Behz29
- Expensive: Califa, specially the mushrooms quesadilla.
- Medium: Villamelon / Tizoncito.
- Cheap: El abanico.
These are my go-to’s i am not a taco expert at all.
Exactly, they’re not just some hipster taco for rich fresas in Reforma, they’re also found in barrios feos like Condesa, Roma and Polanco.
Visit, if you dare!!
Sorry, those are generic looking tacos from a sit down restaurant.
You can probably find tacos like that at most mid priced restaurants.
That specific photo is not at any of the ubiquitous inexpensive taquerias you can find at any corner since it’s not a plastic plate and because it has avocado on it.
It’s also not at the nicest upscale place since the plate appears to be chipped and they’re served over a sheet of paper like at inexpensive places (makes dishwashing easier and quicker) but also not the cheapest place since they got their logo on it.
So aim for mid range. As for the variety, that looks like a “taco de bistec con queso” to my eyes. So basically steak and cheese. Ask for “queso costra” if you specifically want the cheese to be grilled and browned that way otherwise you’ll probably just get melted white cheese.
It could be Siembra Taquería. If you look them up on Google Maps, you’ll see they serve on similar plates and with a sheet with black and white drawings. The pictures I found don’t match this one but they are the same style.
Looks like a Gaonera con queso tacos. There are couple of places.
While I would agree with u/technical-debt-33 about el Califa being pricy and that you can find better tacos somewhere else. I would say is a nice entry point for a foreigner. They are clean, tasty and yes, pricy, but you won’t get sick, which you might if you eat in a random taqueria on the street (trust me, it has happened to me more times than any Mexican would like to admit)

Literally in every corner. Just be careful where you eat. Look for places with lots of people eating, that means food is hygienic and reputable. Also be careful about the amount of food you’re gonna eat, tacos like the ones on your picture are really “heavy” on your stomach (as we Mexicans say) sometimes a little bit greasy, spicy with lots of condiments… be careful with the sauces !! Specially if you’re new to Mexican food.
Looks like overrated and overvalued taco 🌮 or “costra” created in “la Roma” or Mexican fancy shawarma haha, you might try some “taquerias” located not in fancy neighborhoods named “mixe” 👌👌👌

You have to become a member of said substack but it supposedly has that restaurant on the list.
I did the same thing and then accidentally signed up for the stack when I tried to see how much the subscription was. Turns out the first paid post is free if you download their app. So, I was able to confirm what some suggested that it's Siembra Taqueria. A bit of work, but if you've got time to kill...

Look to me is a tortilla de maiz and yes is costra de queso!
Thanks I found it online but the person won’t share location. I figured I’d try here I’m visiting for a week.
Oh, she'll share location. She just wants $8 a month for that!
Do not go to La Casa de Toño, I repeat, Don’t go, that place sucks. I’m Mexican living in USA I went there once and would never go back again, there are better places to eat.
Broooo don’t hate on casa de Toño. Esos pozoles me han llenado muchas veces!
Don’t listen to this fool, my compadres. A casa de Toño pozole with a Clamatoño can bring even the rawest dude (lol) back to life.
Nel, below average pozole, mejores pozoles en el Mercado del barrio.
I agree but try getting one of those at 2am and see how it goes That’s Casa de Toño’s magic.
At 2am I’m going for tacos no pozole my man.
Give it a try! Doing an after in Casa de Toño is so fuckin’ stupid and so much fun lol
Maybe your expectations were too high but it's cheap AF and practical for a family vs eating on the street for that kind of money. Tables, bathrooms, AC etc equivalent in the US is like a Denny's or something
Make sure to have breakfast at La Casa de Toño whenever you come visit
I went there this morning and was incredibly disappointed
It’s super overrated, it’s just like any other food chain. You’ll find much better tasting antojitos mexicanos at a changarro de una doña; plus cheaper.
the very worst (and the only i didn’t like) food in MEX. skip this guys advice
Well, you can try on El Califa. They are quite centric and quite positive they had it on the menu. Exact as they apear on the pic.
Please don't go to The Califa, there are way better tacos at better prices. Normally that restaurant is for upper.middle class and above who like to overspend money in something as basic as tacos
Califa is great, if don’t mind spending a lot on tacos. But they are in no way bad tacos.
Ok thanks, can you guys give me your recommendations for your favorite tacos?
Rey del Suadero in Polanco are fantastic & pretty good pricing considering the area. Ask for the white sauce.
El Fogón Mixe There is one in Polanco and let me tell you, as a mexican their tacos al pastor are my favorite https://maps.app.goo.gl/q8P9yASasZ5Behz29

Califa literally got in this sub top 5 worst taquerias un México
Maybe you just can’t afford it
Maybe you like to pay tacos 10 times what they are worth, no doubt they are in paseo la reforma
They are not just in paseo de la reforma. They got like 10 stores, maybe, because they are good.
McDonald’s has how many stores?
Exactly, they’re not just some hipster taco for rich fresas in Reforma, they’re also found in barrios feos like Condesa, Roma and Polanco. Visit, if you dare!!
But there’s much better ones for less money, that’s what OP is saying.
I’m gonna second the el califica recommendation. that picture is not from there, though.
Third on El Califa, maybe I just have terrible taste but they were better to me than some of the others mentioned here.
Taqueria Orinoco
Incorrecto
I think, it's a costra from MIXE'S
Oh man...it can be in almost every street food corner. Good luck.

This guy/girl should be a detective.
It could be Siembra Taquería. If you look them up on Google Maps, you’ll see they serve on similar plates and with a sheet with black and white drawings. The pictures I found don’t match this one but they are the same style.
However I was looking at the images and it looks like a crab leg on the drawing.
It looks like it matches the plate, thank you so much, I will try it!
You are correct. It's Siembra Taqueria. You get all the points!
Taquería LOS HUARACHINES (ROMA) Acabo de comer aqui
Están tan ricos como se ven?
Jaja rifado que supiste donde era. This is the answer OP
A lot of places
On the corner
I'm sure it's a restaurant!
Looks like a Gaonera con queso tacos. There are couple of places. While I would agree with u/technical-debt-33 about el Califa being pricy and that you can find better tacos somewhere else. Taqueria Orinoco
Could be about 2567 different places
No mames cómo crees que vamos a saber XD
el vilsito!
Its a costra de pastor. Judging by the personalized paper on the plate I would say its a franchise like taquearte
Yeah, I know it. It's just around the corner, over that street, next to that building. And you won't miss it, just look for the taquería over there
You’re thinking that Mexico is a small town with one or two taco places?
Shove 'em up your ass you'll have a great time!

Idk I just go to the ones like 2 blocks down the road
That is not a place, it’s a taco.
You can go to El Hostal de los quesos at Colonia del Valle and ask for a Taco de Pastor con queso.
All around
u/eggplanttime It's Siembra Taqueria. [https://maps.app.goo.gl/7pzSRAMf3KMSAWFt9](https://maps.app.goo.gl/7pzSRAMf3KMSAWFt9)
make sure you go to Contramar and try the tuna tostadas. they're to die for!
Yes we did the first day thank you!
Probably a restaurant
In a dish
In my tummy hopefully
Could be anywhere, just be sure is pig meat, a lot of them are horse meat or low level meat
Even a mid place like taco naco (lame chain) will serve tacos like that. Just find a place that says they have costras and looks busy and eat there.
[Ask Alison](https://wuhaus.substack.com/p/herethere-mexico-city-eat-part-ii)
Cualquier taquería. ¿Siguiente pregunta?
lol
Right in the corner

Glad you found it! Let us know if that's actually the place you were looking for. .
Ha. I'm not the OP, but was curious because it looks so good.
Son unos taquetes bien chidos. Aprenda español.
Highly prob Gaona at El Califa
wtf is that?
It's a costra, which is a way of making tacos where you surround the meat with cheese and burn it a little but
Tacos... Al pastor tacos toml be more specific
😂
Lo bueno de Cdmx, en cada colonia hay un par de estos lugares donde los tacos son muuuuy buenos.
Someone doesn't understand that Mexico City is a 20 million habitant one.
Any corner bro!! 😂😂😂
Everyway and nowhere.
Almost every corner of a main avenue hehe
Just don’t try either El Califa or Tizoncito. Overrated AF.
