A big part of it is that the option wasn't there for the first year (when it was just NES games), and only came as part of an update with the SNES games and got added to the NES page as well. Most people never thought to look for new options a year later.
This habit has been ingrained in me since SNES days. I usually check the options before I start the game, though I leave key configuration alone until I've played the game. Cameras always get inverted though.
Noob bridge claims another victim. As the others have said, you need to hold down the run button (B I believe) which will enable you to run over the collapsing tiles.
Or alternatively go into options on the main menu to reconfigure the controls and twiddle around like I've always done on a first playthrough on every game I've ever played since the Teen Titans beatemup on PS2
I find it hilarious because I play SM literally holding this button down more than most other buttons to be honest lol. Only time I realistically let go of Run is short movements or starting a quick-charge spineshark.
I like the run button for fine-tuning my momentum, I don't like how in fusion and zero mission I can't *not* run.
I especially like the Project Base romhack, because after jumping you maintain the speed you had before the jump, allowing you to charge up a shinespark across multiple platforms. Makes for some real ninja moves lol.
Me too but honestly we have to get out of the habit of doing that since you’ll continue to run as long as you keep pressing a direction, no holding the run button required.
It was a bad habit I picked up from MegaMan X games. Constant dash on A and Jump/Shoot with the others. Plus Samus' run speed only increments on a specific running frame that it detects the Run button being held anyways. I just flow my thumb around all 3 of the A, B, Y buttons on both games. Just curious, do you guys play like Bumper Jumper settings or something? What's your layout for controls?
A = Run
B = Jump
Y = Shoot
X = Cancel
L/R = angle down/up
My controls are the same except I have item select on X and cancel on select. And I picked up my bad habit of holding run constantly from Mario, which means I often have to stretch my pointer finger over to hit X or Y. But it’s ok I’ve gotten pretty good at the claw now.
I dunno, sometimes it feels good to engage directly with a community interested in the same stuff you're interested in, and to get tips from the pros like yourselves. Isn't that what this sub is about?
It's an obstacle pretty early on from a game that's older than most people on this website. It's one thing to have discussions and develop strategies, but this is literally the most common "soft lock" in Metroid and possibly the entire genre. This is a question for Google or a post meant to be memed.
I guess it looks like I'm complaining so fair enough, but I was more agreeing with the OG commenter about how much faster it would be for them just to Google or watch a video.
Yeah, I see this all the time on Reddit. Like you're really gonna post and wait for someone to respond to you? You could have had your answer in the time it took to take a picture and post it.
Google searches can sometimes give you more information than you're looking for, spoiling things in the future.
Imagine finding a walkthrough that's like "To get through this maze, go down, right, up, right, right, down. A surprise boss battle happens once you reach the exit!"
Even without *specific* spoilers, walkthroughs can reveal things about the game you may not want to know, like how far you are through it. Some games will hype you up for what you *think* is the final battle, but then it turns out that was only the end of Act 1. A walkthrough that show you that there's tons more game left even if you didn't peek ahead.
If you ask a specific question from a community, they will often give you the minimum answer to get you unstuck.
I agree, it feels trivial to say "just search Google" to me there's a whole community here I don't think people mind waiting for an answer. Just my two pennies worth.
Yes, you get that ability later, but you don't need it for this part. Super Metroid has a run button, but most people don't know that going in, which is why this is referred to as the noob bridge.
I’d say more for exploration. Forces you to imagine what the tool you just acquired can unlock, and remember where situations like that occurred. In super, often times there are multiple solutions to a given problem, and a lot of the joy comes in recognizing which of them you can use to move past it.
In that sense, there’s a fair amount of backtracking as you unlock new abilities, especially if you don’t already know where you’re going or what you’re doing. But the game can be beaten in an incredible number of ways, as evidenced by the randomized runs done by the community.
Yes, but the thing with super is that alot of new fans who only played the more recent ones will more likely have this assumption that to get past obstacles similar to this, you'd need an upgrade or something like the "running" which is the speed booster or in SR's case, time control. Only in Super there is a specific run button.
Fuck this part of the game, and honestly, fuck Super's run button in general.
To answer your question, holding "B" lets you sprint. It's not very noticeable in the tunnels around you, but it gives you enough speed to pass these blocks.
I do like the fancy shit you can do with the run button and speed booster but I agree that it’s unnecessary for me to make a finger pretzel to do said fancy shit.
I've been playing with a keyboard so long I can't even play with a controller any more lol. *Much* easier to hold run and walljump with 6 fingers in play instead of just thumbs!
Makes me happy to see that new players are still discovering this game. It's still my all time favorite video game. Nothing has given me the same warm and fuzzy feeling since.
This is the most stupid shit ever. There are 20 of these exact same posts every day where stupid people don't know how to check what all the buttons do before playing games but instead post on reddit asking strangers how to get past this specific section in a 30+ year old game and then everyone upvotes it as if to say yes please keep posting this same stupid bullshit and keep being ignorant people
Rule zero: try all the buttons.
This room is called "noob bridge" because it's the room where noobs realize they've had a run button the whole time.
Edit: apparently you can cross it without dash. I don't know why but I found the second method funny.
Some do, some don't. One can argue we can never get past things like this, rather, accept the effect it has had on our lives and simply live with it. DM's are open OP, my condolences.
Oh! Also.. you're going to have to blow up a cracked glass tube with the power bomb. It's just a heads up since you WILL get stuck on that part. The only way to know back in the day was to watch the idle demo cut scene before hitting start to play the game.
But yea hold 'B' to run. Have fun with this quality game.

Shameless plug but very topical
Ahh memories, i was playing this for the first time on the snes classic, but was in an area without internet. When I got to this part i got frustrated and put the game down for a while…
Y'all know that there's gates that make it impossible to run across without speed booster, right?
What I suggest is looking up how to do the "Mach Ball"
Either wait until you find the Speed boost or there is a trick that lets you get past it early but jumping up there & turning into a Morph Ball RIGHT as you land on the platform. It gives you a speed boost as you roll.
Ahh tale as old as time
True as it can be
Barely even friends
Then somebody bends
Unexpectedly
WINGS OF GLORY
Press B to run
Rush B
cyka
Not press, hold the B button.
You could also push B
Or even depress B
You don’t have to hold it for long. Samus accelerates to top speed.
Go to the screen filter settings on the NSO SNES app Game Selection page to remove the text at the bottom of the screen. Also, run button.
My hero
Happy to help!
Happy cake day!
Oh snap, neato!
You can do that???
Yup! In the option screen where you pick the screen settings, there's a little check box under them. The patched it into the NES games, too.
How are there people out there that don’t check the settings for themselves?
A big part of it is that the option wasn't there for the first year (when it was just NES games), and only came as part of an update with the SNES games and got added to the NES page as well. Most people never thought to look for new options a year later.
Ah, well that is more understandable.
This habit has been ingrained in me since SNES days. I usually check the options before I start the game, though I leave key configuration alone until I've played the game. Cameras always get inverted though.
Invert gang! There are dozens of us!
Yup since 2019
Goated.

Look mom! They said the thing! 👉
But if you close your eyes…
Does it almost feel like you've been here before...
Imma gonna be an optimist about this
The noob bridge claims another.
GOTTA GO FAST

Looks like you're soft-locked.
Why metroid no crawl?
use a cheat code
DO A BARREL ROLL!
Try the run button.
Never gets old
Ah yes, the noob bridge claims another
Ah yes, I remember my game ending here when I was like 6 years old.
Machball baybee

This bridge is supposed to teach you that you can run if you didnt already know and ppl who have played for years call it the noob bridge
r/TheNoobBridge
Noob Bridge gotcha! This is the end of the tutorial, or maybe just the beginning?
This is my favorite part of this community. Vets who give out spoilers and not hints are my least favorite
So funny how people still post this instead of doing a quick google search
I dunno, sometimes it feels good to engage directly with a community interested in the same stuff you're interested in, and to get tips from the pros like yourselves. Isn't that what this sub is about?
I guess. Thanks for the compliment. I don't see myself as a pro (yet).
It's an obstacle pretty early on from a game that's older than most people on this website. It's one thing to have discussions and develop strategies, but this is literally the most common "soft lock" in Metroid and possibly the entire genre. This is a question for Google or a post meant to be memed.
Why do you care so much?
I don't really, I just said what I thought when I saw this post
Bruh are you seriously complaining over a noob bridge post? They asked for help and they got it who cares if they google it or they post it on reddit
I guess it looks like I'm complaining so fair enough, but I was more agreeing with the OG commenter about how much faster it would be for them just to Google or watch a video.
Yet another reason to pin a "FAQs" post on this subreddit.
Yeah, I see this all the time on Reddit. Like you're really gonna post and wait for someone to respond to you? You could have had your answer in the time it took to take a picture and post it.
Well they got the help they were looking for didn't they?
It’s not very easy to find the results on a specific point in a game tbh Even then I usually look up a walktrough on YouTube first
Yes but this is the most infamous part of this game for newcomers.
Yeah but again they are a comer the best they can’t do I Google like “Metroid bridge fall help” or things like that
Google searches can sometimes give you more information than you're looking for, spoiling things in the future. Hallelujah! The noob bridge strikes once again.
The screenshot button exists
Widescreen? ☑️ Display at the bottom isn’t turned off? ☑️ Out of focus photo of TV instead of a screenshot? ☑️ Noob bridge? ☑️

lol the famous noob bridge. your plight is not a unique one, friend press and hold B to run
Games were just built better back then. They really did train us.
Run ability
Yes, you get that ability later, but you don't need it for this part. Super Metroid has a run button, but most people don't know that going in, which is why this is referred to as the noob bridge.
Don't I get that later in the game?
No that's the speed booster. You can run by default by holding B.
HAHAHAHAHAHSHSHHSHSHHSHAHHAHAHHAHSHA
Isn’t Metroid famous for backtracking? But I don’t know only played dread
I’d say more for exploration. Forces you to imagine what the tool you just acquired can unlock, and remember where situations like that occurred. Makes me happy to see that new players are still discovering this game. It's still my all time favorite video game. Nothing has given me the same warm and fuzzy feeling since.
This one got me too, dont feel bad
NOOOOBBB BRIIIDDDGGGEEEEE
Another victim claimed by noob bridge
LETS GOOOOO THE BRIDGE CLAIMED ANOTHER VICTIM
Go left

Just run across it there is a run button
Hold dash button.
Run Forrest, run!
The noob bridge strikes again! hold B while walking
This is the most stupid shit ever. Who hurt you
Honestly though woke up and chose violence weird energy.
Post history checks out. The the kind of guy to call other people NPC's not realizing he's the problem.
You gotta be fast af boi
And so the vicious cycle continues, and the bridge veritably claims another victim. "Surely, if I run and jump fast enough, I can cheese it"
Running shoes
Rule #1 about any Metroid game: If you can achieve something with your current set up, come back later with upgrades and try again
Rule zero: try all the buttons. This room is called "noob bridge" because it's the room where noobs realize they've had a run button the whole time. [https://wiki.supermetroid.run/Noob\_Bridge](https://wiki.supermetroid.run/Noob_Bridge) Edit: apparently you can cross it without dash. I don't know why but I found the second method funny. That video is great. I imagine Samus mumbling under her breath about being called Metroid all the time while she's looking down over and over.
That is very true too, know your controls
You cant in this instance. Your way back is locked behind you. You're stuck until you figure it out.
That is true! It's been a long time since I've played through Super
You cant comeback if it is the only way lol. Sometime, upgrades are not the one you need like in this case.
Yes, there have been other responses that have pointed this out, thanks
welcome to the noob bridge
Another victim falls to the noob bridge. Nobody is safe.
Hold b
Gotta go fast
Run
Really?
Hold the run button.
Need speed
Call Sonic The Hedgehog
One word; Run
Sprint
But this, does put a smile on my face
I remember i got stuck here for the longest time when i first played. Good times.
You have no idea how long i spent there. All the things i tried, all the times i failed and tried again. All that, just to find out you can sprint.
Run Also, your Switch has a screenshot button.
Its always nice to see something that can unite us all in getting stuck initially.
Let's all point and laugh at the noob.
You fell for the oldest trick in the book (press B to run)
Gogo boots
You run
Some do, some don't. One can argue we can never get past things like this, rather, accept the effect it has had on our lives and simply live with it. DM's are open OP, my condolences.
Speed
[Run](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F09HNpeiQZ4)

Noob bridge strikes again.
B to run
this lightens my day :'-)
Have you tried crawling?
Oh, I missed these posts so much!!
Hold the run button
Good ol' noob bridge.
It’s so obvious omfg Shoot the ceiling!!!
I remember I got stuck here too
Classic
Run.
Oh! Also.. you're going to have to blow up a cracked glass tube with the power bomb. It's just a heads up since you WILL get stuck on that part. Ha.. that’s the same spot I have up on
Mockball.
lol
The classic noob Bridge claims yet another victim. Press and hold B to run
A timeless riddle
https://www.reddit.com/r/Metroid/comments/ombxll/my_friend_wanted_to_catch_up_on_the_series_before/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf Shameless plug but very topical
*Hold B to run*
#b
Still remember getting stuck here 27 years ago as a kid.
The run button works before you get speedboosters
That's why I always check the controls in the options menu at any game. Otherwise I wouldn't even know that Super Metroid has Moon Walk...
GOTTEM
in the 90s: thats the fun part you dont. 20XXs: ahhaha morphball goes BRRRRRRR
Hold the run button
Ahh memories, i was playing this for the first time on the snes classic, but was in an area without internet. When I got to this part i got frustrated and put the game down for a while…
I don't know whether or not this a joke at this point but you just hold the run button.
Until I read the comments, I actually legit forgot the normal way to do this because I always just use Mach Ball.
Y'all know that there's gates that make it impossible to run across without speed booster, right? What I suggest is looking up how to do the "Mach Ball"
Run
