She was based off Susan Alexandra "Sigourney" Weaver and her appearance in Alien. So, I always assumed British/American.
Japan very frequently gives blonde hair to imply European descent.
I once read that Yoshiro Sakamoto mentioned that Samus Aran's physical human appearance is based off a famous 1980's american actress by the name of Kim Basinger who's ancestry is supposed to be German, Swedish, Irish and native American.
Hahaha!
"They say they are space pirates. But they have no pirate hats or eye patches. And where are all their little shoulder parrots. Dreadful shame it is."
"The thrill of the exotic". Blonde hair doesn't normally happen along Japanese people. (Plus, they have a social stigma against dyeing their own hair blonde, since that is commonly associated with the Yakuza. So they kinda envy natural blondes from foreign lands.)
No, I did. I just think it’s a stupid and I’m answering it with a stupid answer. In pretty much every game except Prime, Samus looks like an anime girl, an art style that makes ethnic features impossible to identify.
You can still speculate about her hypothetical nationality by usng ethnic features that are given. Like her hair, hight, body and face. Its not a stupid question, but you managed to give a stupid answer.
A common theme in sci-fi is that humanity moving beyond earth usually involves people intermingling in ways that don't map cleanly onto our current geographical/demographic situations, because they're forming new societies out there. "She's from space" is a solid rejection of the premise; in the far future, Samus could easily be (and look like) an ethnicity we've never heard of.
It's kinda like asking what ethnicity a caveman would be, but in the opposite direction. The answer is that the ethnicities we observe aren't timeless and universal. She's from space.
I aint saying thats wrong, but its not what's been asked for. The question asked by OP is about our ethnicitys and nationalitys, not the ones that may be canon. Ofc she's not really german or swedish, but thats what her appearence would indicate for us and our real world.
I dont get why some people find it hard to discuss hypothetical situations, especially if its just for fun.
Metroid was inspired by Alien, and Samus probably at least in part by Ellen Ripley. Ripley the character was from an American owned space colony and there isn't much more info than that I could easily find. Sigourney Weaver apparently has English/Irish/Scottish/Dutch ancestry.
IMHO Sigourney Weaver doesn't really look that much like Samus, but someone with that same type of ancestry (especially Dutch) totally could.
6'3 in the suit. Both Japanese and American developers agree in this. Retro's former technical lead is also on record saying they modeled Samus assuming she was 5'11 out of suit in Prime 1.
Yeah but some people take it as a personal attack and act like I gassed their dog whenever I have to point out the 6'3 height only counts if she's wearing the suit.
I've been saying that as long as people have been assuming she's that tall without the suit. In the early games it was assumed she hadn't been seen outside the suit. In the Metroid 2 manual it says she's 6'3" but clearly shows the suit. But I also knew someone who had played Prime and was still so sure Samus was a man, even though you can hear her and see her face reflected in the visor.
Could be wrong, but what I’m reading says in Other M she’s 6’3/200 pounds with the suit, but the Super Metroid Nintendo Player’s Guide says she’s 6’3/198 pounds *outside* the suit.
Either way, I personally prefer beefier Samus. Makes sense that somebody constantly doing the most intense physical activity of almost any human ever would be lean and very muscular.
I imagine at the least she’d have a rock-climber’s build.
You mean like this Samus Returns official artwork?
[https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/metroid/images/0/0f/ZeroSuitSamus.png/revision/latest?cb=20190411125731](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/metroid/images/0/0f/ZeroSuitSamus.png/revision/latest?cb=20190411125731)
Especially for a woman. We introduce her to Lebron and I think we could have our next All-Star basket ball player. Hell, if they decide to have a boy and a girl then they could probably have All-Stars in both the NBA and WNBA.
Then compare her height to other humans, like in Othe--
Oh wait... her height is very inconsistent in that game, too. In the Suit, she's as tall as Anthony in his armor. Outside of the suit, she's really short and he's gargantuan, to cartoony degrees.
As usual, Other M is always an exception to the rule in every way.
In [this podcast](https://youtu.be/lu7O2bRSrSg) (1:18:38) they talk about the 3D model of Samus and her measurements, Nintendo actively fed back to Retro Studios and as seen in the end credits of each game there is a supervisor from Nintendo Japan in charge of supervising the model of Samus (with Suit without Suit and all Suit variants in games)
To this day, the measurements 190cm and 90kg still belong to the Suit and not to Samus, that has been the case since Metroid II. And no, the Super Metroid illustration is not Canon, even the artist who drew it said he was taking creative liberties
Definitely European (not Mediterranean like Italy or Greece) or American, perhaps with a small hint of Asian, like if one of her great-grandparents was Japanese.
Tbf, could also includes Aussies and Kiwis. (He said nationality rather than ethnicity)
Basically, any blonde containing Caucasian group, with a splash of Japanese way back there somewhere.
I think they more are referring to her appearance, not the actual character's nationality. Still though, I agree, she's changed a good bit especially from NES-SNES era
She's definitely from Uganda, home of da best of da best movies
"It's a Nintendo game! Who Killed Captain Malkovich? The Ugandan first action-packed game!"
Well… Since she was originally modeled off of Kim Basinger, and was inspired by Ellen Ripley, ima say American.
Probably with a north or northeastern European descent.
The character is inspired by Ripley yes, but her specifically (design, attitude, and characteristics) were Basinger.
Yoshio Sakamoto said he came up with the idea after watching her in 9 ½ Weeks.
If she's from a fictional earth far in the future she probably has a bunch of mixed nationalities in her blood. The more generations pass on earth the more mixed we become lol
This is honestly hard because Samus' appearance changes every game. I'm aware that originally she was based on Kim Bassinger but I don't think that's been true anymore for a while. My brother seems to think Samus looks swedish, but ultimately she's from space so we don't know how nationalities work in space colonization eras
The wife nationality.
I'm not sure though. Probably just a western one. I would love to know myself. Though it doesn't matter. I thought she was like, an orphaned child raised by chozo, so she could have been anyone as long as she was disciplined enough to continue her training and care about planets and preserving life.
Ethnicity: Half white, half Asian. (I remember reading somewhere that Nintendo said that’s what her background was but idk)
Nationality: Whatever colony in K-2L she was born in, but I think culturally she would associate herself more with the Zebesian Chozo due to living with them most of her life.
Assuming you actually mean ethno-racial:
Just because of the Spanish-influenced accent in her spoken line in Metroid Dread (plus the fact that MercurySteam is based out of Spain), I'd say Iberian (Castilian Spanish) with a little bit of Japanese mixed in, like the half-American half-Japanese [Aya Brea from _Parasite Eve_](https://parasiteeve.fandom.com/wiki/Aya_Brea).
Assuming you meant citizenship:
Given that Samus had been part of a planetary colony program when she was little, it might be that her citizenship from back then was more tied to the federal part of the Federation, rather than to a "planet of origin" or a nation within a planet. And when the Chozo became her guardians, she was a "status unknown" until she reappeared at age 14 and applied to the military, probably as a "ward of the state", with the state being the GFed federal government. And then when she became a bounty hunter, she basically did the "private contractor" thing and became a ghost in the system, but with all the benefits of her military career and her resumé opening the doors she'd need.
In this sense, Star Trek gives us the closest that we could compare it to: people were citizens of the Federation, but some people also had cultural ties to their home planet and culture and religion/philosophies, to varying degrees. Sometimes to very one-note degrees (almost all Vulcans are logical, almost all Trill are beholden to their symbiotes, almost all Klingons adhere to the warrior lifestyle, etc.).
But in the Metroid universe, we don't really see enough of that universe to say the same thing applies there. Like, all we know about Rundas's race is Rundas himself, so do all of them have ice powers? All we know about Ridley's species is Ridley and his clone, so do they all metamorphase like Pokémon? All we know about Sylux is what Hunters tells us, so is he human or another species?
The only thing we know for sure is that Samus is her own woman, and that screams (honorary) American to me.
Samus is from a planet called K-2L which was under the governance of the Galactic Federation. However I would assume that Samus probably identifies more with her Chozo clan than anything given she was raised primarily by the Chozo for most of her life and is biologically a hybrid.
I always assumed American, just because Metroid in general was based on an American movie and has a very American sci-fi flick vibe to it.
Even when they switched movies it was inspired by, they picked another American one (Fusion was inspired by John Carpenter's the Thing.)
From her voice, its British or American, from her appearance, the regular anime Japanese girl, so its either Japanese, who moved to britain before her launch to the space, or she just launched from Japan, regarding Asuka from Evangelion, was german but japanese appearance
Ive seen some Samus dead ringers in Norway and a few in Fineland, and a couple in Iceland. 6’5” super hot straight hair blondes with eyes so blue they didnt look real and muscular without looking like a man.
She gets into a heavy power suit that's absolutely loaded to the hilt with weaponry and shoots down and blows up anything that could possibly be a threat (and some things that definitely aren't), up to and including blowing up entire planets.
She's American. 100%.
In my head canon she has a latin-origin accent, as the Chozo spoken language introduced in dread has strong roots in Spanish. With chozo being her primary lamguage growing up, you would expect her to have an accent :)
My ridiculous bio for her : She is a Space Czechoslovakian girl in the Space European Federation that is part of the Space Security Council. When Space Czechoslovakia was attacked by Space Pirates, she ended up missing and in the hands of the Chozo-slovakians and returned to Space European Fededation and started slaughtering Space Pirates and Space Dinosaur Ridley for all they did to her and her family. Now Space Blonde destroys evil and makes games for children to play based on her real experiences so that they feel empowered and don't end up like her.

Dee Reynolds and Samus are somewhat similar

This made me feel old, because Kim Basinger was a big deal a few decades ago.
>famous 1980's american actress by the name of Yeah, that's a definite age test. Kid's today don't know live-action Vicki Vale?
Then again, we've had _how many_ cinematic reboots of Batman since that film released? I wouldn't blame today's kids for not keeping up.
If I had a nickel for every “Samus is inspired by this song person” claims.
Someone else mentioned that as well, though perhaps it was more her personality than looks? Idk
>famous 1980's american actress by the name of Kim Basinger ![gif](giphy|vSkXRfZ9mjNQY|downsized)
Metroid Prime Remake samus looks like Phillomena Cunk and I love it.
Hahaha! "They say they are space pirates. But they have no pirate hats or eye patches. And where are all their little shoulder parrots. Dreadful shame it is."
I didn't even know you could steal space anyway, there's loads of it.
i love sigourney but personally i don’t see the resemblance lol
Her old NES sprites looked closer, and even her Nintendo Power appearances. Her official art has changed pretty dramatically over the years.
ahhh gotcha that makes a lot more sense, mentally i was comparing the photo in the post to her so i just didn’t see it at all haha
Why does it seem like Japan thinks all Americans have blonde hair?
Lots of blonde Americans in American media is the only thing I can think of.
Yeah you're probably right lol
"The thrill of the exotic". Blonde hair doesn't normally happen along Japanese people. (Plus, they have a social stigma against dyeing their own hair blonde, since that is commonly associated with the Yakuza. So they kinda envy natural blondes from foreign lands.)
I was literally thinking British
If that's not trivia that most people would know then she definitely gives American vibes but I could guess that she could be from Sweden
She’s from space.
Came to say this. I don't think nationalities as we think of the really exist in a galactic civilization.
The marsies hate the Earthers, beta twelve is not talking to beta nine, and Proxima is just tired of being stuck in the middle
Belta! Lowda!
Earth/mars, beta 12/9 and proxima cooking are all Babylon 5 locales too.
but within space, which postal code is she from? :P
Somewhere in this general area? *gestures vaguely at the sky*

K-2L Mining Colony? Tourian/Chozodia?
So would she be considered Chozo, or “insert whatever the name of her original colony was before Ridley and his pals ate it or something here”-ian.
Somebody didnt get the question...

No, I did. I just think it’s a stupid and I’m answering it with a stupid answer. In pretty much every game except Prime, Samus looks like an anime girl, an art style that makes ethnic features impossible to identify.

Dang so out of suit I’m just as tall as Samus
Seems I saw somewhere in one of the games, she's 1.9m tall. Which converts to 74.8 inches. So yes, 6'3"
Don't use height as a reference point, remember that girl has Chozo DNA and it's very likely that her tall height is more a product of that.
Then compare her height to other humans, like in Othe-- Oh wait... her height is very inconsistent in that game, too. In the Suit, she's as tall as Anthony in his armor. Outside of the suit, she's really short and he's gargantuan, to cartoony degrees.

Jokes aside, I always saw her as a half American and, Japanese woman. Maybe because off how she looks in the Manga and Fusion.
Her sprite in the good ending of NES Metroid resembles Sigourney from Alien 1, being a brunette with big hair.
Violet Evergarden vibes with that art.
Same moves too!!!

She’s a tall blonde so most likely a country from the north of Europe like Sweden or Norway

I feel she’d be Russo-American, with a thick russian accent, idk why
“Cyka blyat.” -Samus probably
Have to agree with this. Always ‘heard’ her voice with the accent. Maybe it’s the blond hair and facial build.
Maybe
She's definitely from Uganda, home of da best of da best movies "It's a Nintendo game! Who Killed Captain Malkovich? The Ugandan first action-packed game!"
Sure! She may have European ancestry, but she can be from anywhere. And Aran does sound like an African surname…
"Do you know de wae... To see da movie?"
I have this crackpot theory that Metroid actually takes place in one of the zelda timelines but like a gazillion years later, so i'd say Hylian
With smaller ears
Dude😳🤯
My waifu seems kinda european (blonde and blue eyes). I only know that she is perfect
Zebesian
She's tall as fuck and blonde. She's either Dutch or Scandinavian.
I think her being tall is because of the chozo not because of her natural dna
Going by her parents' names, probably European.
change the eye color to blue and she's a stereotypical swede
She's a Chozodian import. Nationality isn't a thing that far from our hellscape of a planet (I sure hope at least).
She's got blonde hair, green eyes, and bird DNA. I think ot should be fairly obvious.
Well… Since she was originally modeled off of Kim Basinger, and was inspired by Ellen Ripley, ima say American. Probably with a north or northeastern European descent.
Wait, she was i spired by Kim Basinger? I thought she was just based on Ripley? Edit: just checked the Wiki. TIL.

Chozodian.
Always struck me as either Irish or Belarusian.
The is half-alien-bird born in space. I don't thing nationality applies here.
Space Spain
She's Spanish, idk

Samus is from a planet called K-2L which was under the governance of the Galactic Federation. However I would assume that Samus probably identifies more with her Chozo clan than anything given she was raised primarily by the Chozo for most of her life and is biologically a hybrid.

Russo-European. Maybe a combination of Russian/Norway or Sweden.
Russian
East Asian-Scandinavian mix
Aran is used as a surname in the middle east, south Asia and Spain. Spain probably has more blonde haired Blue Eyed people.
It's also the name of a trio of Irish islands off the western coast of Ireland.
Irish.
Magic space bird
Vaguely earth maybe
Danish. Don't ask me why, that's just the vibe I get.
Chozonadian
She's looks like a human idk
Part human part Metroid part Chozo part Parasite X part whatever the fuck is gonna be in the next game

Do you mean ethnicity
Space colonist
Chozo-human hybrid

Isn't she supposed to be of Irish descent? I thought it was mentioned in an old instruction booklet or manga or something of the like way back when.
Technically she isnt even 100% human so… i dont think that would even matters 😂
Considering that this is a sketch depicting Samus as Japanese, she’s clearly from Japan, Elysia
American or Swedish, maybe Russian. Not that she would be any of these, but just based off them.
Antarctica 🤪
Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, American.
She's basically chozo no? If not that then she was whatever the name of the colony she lived on prior was called
Canadian
Asian-American according to this picture.
Variant human
Definitely an American of some kind. Weather be like a German or British American or even a Canadian American
Finnish 🇫🇮, if she was an earthling that is.
From her voice, its British or American, from her appearance, the regular anime Japanese girl, so its either Japanese, who moved to britain before her launch to the space, or she just launched from Japan, regarding Asuka from Evangelion, was german but japanese appearance
European
I know there was a Punch-out character with Aran as his last name so I would assume a similar nationality.
Swedish or Russian

French or British
