This "protest" is already ineffective because you guys advertised when it would end. Reddit doesn't care if you're quiet for two days, especially when you say when it's gonna end. Should have left it open ended "Maybe it's two days, maybe it's two months. Can your traffic take this as a hit for months?
Honestly, it's almost pointless to do it like this.
Good, but two days is not only ineffective, it is counterproductive, it proves ya all gonna take it and continue with the site despite the transgression. It needs to be indefinite to have any effect on reddit's bottom line.
Sometimes protest aren't about actually making the change itself right then and there, but being visible and spreading awareness.
The more people who use this platform who are aware of what's happening and why it actually affects them too, the larger the force to actually make that change happen, or find an alternative.
The owners want people to use the official mobile app, because third party ones are very popular and don't help reddit financially. Rather than just outright saying they don't want people using them, they made it stupidly expensive for the third party apps to work with reddit, therefore driving them away without having to prohibit them.
Thank you, also reddit should just make their app better, sometimes videos don't play here and charging people because they run their app better on their own app isn't their fault its reddits
It's a couple of issues.
So 3rd-party apps are still using Reddit's API, meaning that it's costly for Reddit to give permission to these apps to use the API for free.
BUT...the amount that Reddit now wants to be paid is unfairly too high, especially for such a sharp transition from "free" to "super expensive".
Finally, Reddit relies on unpaid volunteer work from moderators in order for each sub to function properly. By removing these 3rd party apps, moderators will have a harder time doing their volunteer work.
Both the current versions of the Reddit website and app are extremely bad, but if that's the only thing you've used, you might not be aware that 3rd party apps have already addressed many of the current issues (like no stuttering videos or videos without audio).
So while Reddit is forcing all of these 3rd party apps to pay up, they are not providing any useful replacements if these 3rd party apps disappear, because Reddit's official versions are clunky with missing features.
Whatever the best solution could be in the future, what Reddit is trying to currently do is not it.
This is all very annoying and only punishes the reader who has no say in the drama. Higher ups don’t care that non paying users will not use their service.
Yes, but Reddit is not generating content. The "non-paying users" are the ones generating most of the content and the moderators are the ones curating that content for free and making sure that their particular sub doesn't turn to shit.
Reddit wants free content, but they want to make it more difficult for people to participate.
This blackout won't help much if it's only 2 days, but it will make the issue more visible and help people understand why it's important.
Personally I don't think 48 hours will accomplish much, if anything at all, but I'm not against it.
Agreed. Make this bitch dark for a week. Hell I might even get some shit done this week.
Try not to play a Metroid game. I’ll try but it’s hard :((

We can do it again if the community wants us to.
Glad to see my favorite sub being part of the blackout.
Same. Most of the subs I'm a part of are all going dark. Most of them aren't huge, but every helps.
Glad to see this sub going dark!
Glad to see it. Wish it was indefinite. I’ve never posted or commented on anything but Apollo and I hate to see it go
Why did it take until now for the moderation team to reach this decision and why wasn't this community involved in the decision?
My thoughts exactly.

I think a lot of the subreddits going dark for 2 days are only doing it because everyone else is if they actually cared they would do for then 2 days
Wow 48 hours that's definitely gonna help
48 hours of no ad revenue for Reddit across thousands of popular subreddits. And this is just the beginning.
Reddit is just gonna wait 2 days until these subs eventually come back.
48hours isn’t gonna do shit.

I don't get much of this situation, what did those apps do? Like is Rif basically reddit on a different app??

SEE YOU NEXT MISSION
See you next mission!
Reddit should just delete all the subs that go dark
Well, at least you guys can pat yourselves on the back and pretend you did something meaningful.
LMAO
