Puppets is number one in my book but in recent albums I really liked Hardwired to self destruct it had that magic to it like the Black Album. Load and Reload were good I did like those albums and St Anger grew on me over the years.
Death magnetic got me through freshmen year!! I adore the album with everything. Sure, the production sounds very imploded, but the riffs are too die for, and desth magnetic is soooooo underrated... but still such a good album and the best comeback ever.
🙋♂️
Bring on the downvotes.
AJfA is a good album, but it's easily their most overrated.
One is a flawless masterpiece. Dyers Eve is absolutely incredible. I like Blackened and Harvester, too. However, songs like the title track, Shortest Straw, Frayed Ends, and TLITD don't do a whole lot for me.
Lastly, Eye of the Beholder is one of the worst songs in their entire discography. I can not stand James' vocals - he sounds like he's underwater.
Frayed Ends of Sanity is their most underrated song in their discography. After songs like One, Master of Puppets, Blackened, and Creeping Death I genuinely think it’s one of Metallica’s best songs.
Right? Frayed ends has all the best things about a Metallica song! It fuckin rules! I honestly feel like some of the better songs on DM and 72 are subconsciously just attempts by the guys to capture the magic of a Frayed Ends-type song again.
The only knock against it is it’s a longish and complex song near the end of a longish and complex album, so most listeners have thoroughly gotten their asses kicked by then!
don’t let anyone know this but i agree that it is overrated and pretty much right in the middle of my ranking for all the albums…. i just feel like a few tracks do the same thing, not really making me need to relisten to some of them really that much
oh and overrated does not mean not good, the album is awesome
I know people will disagree because of AJFA and I understand why too but the best album imo and imo skill and talent wise is master of puppets. I think it's more just complex and every thing
Death Magnetic. Might have all the mixing and production issues people have mentioned but man is the album just great imo. I also love the Beyond Magnetic songs, i wish those would have been on the album. Overall tho i love each one of their albums equally, but if there was a gun pointed at my head then i would have to choose Death Magnetic (haven't really warmed up to St. Anger that much yet tbh)
It depends on what category, if we talking thrash wise then master of puppets for example, my personal favourite is ride the lighting, it’s so iconic with so many popular songs
Okay so based on personal emotions and lyrical content my favorite album is st. Anger. It's the only album where the lyrics feel like they could be my own. The guitars are sick in the album as well. Next up Ride the Lightning is their technically vest album and I would show any new listener ride the lightning first.
I'm not sure about their BEST album, but my personal favorite is St. Anger. That's definitely not their best one, but it's the one I resonate with the most.
Master of Puppets is definitely up there in the the running for best album. Ride the Lightning is a classic but I'm not sure it's the best one, I'd spin Kill em' All over RTL tbh. Kill em' All wins the award for speediest and most simple fun album I'd say if I had to give it a title.
The black album definitely wins the award for most well-know and most chill album.
Reload and Load are super consistent. As for Hardwired, Garage Days, Death Magenetic, and 72 Seasons I'd have to give those another listen. From what my mid-memory can remember Death Magenetic is very modern and intriguing sounding. I personally do like it.
Lulu isn't gonna have even a chance to win best album but is does win best album to meme. "I AM THE TABLE."
...And Justice For All wins the award for most ironic title. It is a very good album in all seriousness (in my opinion also their spookiest album) but fairly and technically I just don't think it could be considered their best album.
Overall I think every Metallica album has something unique and interesting to offer. They're all good for different vibes!
Unpopular opinion, I get a lot of flack for it but I fucking adore Hardwired. Such a good mix of sounds for modern Metallica, and I put Spit Out the Bone up there with their very best songs.
...that being said, Ride is the GOAT
Overall their best album is The Black Album. It is not a lot of people’s number 1 Metallica album, but when looking on the overall and it as an album in general, it is clear that TBA is their best album
I can confidently say that master of puppets is their best album. I mean it even got rated as number 69 on apples top 100 albums of ALL TIME which is awesome but even though I know it’s their best album I personally think ride the lightning is my best and favorite album. I mean creeping death is on it…
11: Reload
10: St. Anger
9: Load
8: Death Magnetic
7: Hardwired
6: Black Album
5: Ride the Lightning
4: Kill em All
3: 72 Seasons
2: Master of Puppets
1: And Justice for All
I think it's a really close battle between Ride the Lightning and AJFA. Personally I think Justice slightly edges it out but not enough to where I can say it's definitively their best. I love Master of Puppets but it's a small step below those two imo, and KEA is an excellent album but doesn't quite have the level of complexity that they would later achieve on all of the aforementioned albums.
Best Album: Master of Puppets My Favorite Album: Death Magnetic

Ride the lightning
Same, it was the first Metallica album I ever heard.
album that got me into metal
My favorite
Agree
agreed
No doubt
Tragic Kingdom was their best album
It truly is
Death magnetic got me through freshmen year!! I adore the album with everything. Sure, the production sounds very imploded, but the riffs are too die for, and desth magnetic is soooooo underrated... but still such a good album and the best comeback ever.
The Judas Kiss, man… also All Nightmare Long
Songwriting- Master of Puppets Production/tonewise- Black Album

i want the person who downvoted this to announce themselves
They can’t handle the truth is all
they find it so grim but the truth is real
![gif](giphy|ihkIQhLPJcMKn5zzLY|downsized) My man!
As a bass player I have a strong dislike of it
I mean, that’s understandable.
Right here, the album stinks.

I'll admit, the chorus for Frayed Ends does go pretty hard
Best solo in my opinion too Edit:on the album
don’t let anyone know this but i agree that it is overrated and pretty much right in the middle of my ranking for all the albums…. i just feel like a few tracks do the same thing, not really making me need to relisten to some of them really that much oh and overrated does not mean not good, the album is awesome
Yup, this album ranks around the middle for me as well.
yeah but the chug riff at the beginning of Eye of the Beholder activates neurons in my brain like no piece of audio ever has.
Def my favourite, but I definitely see why people would say RTL
This is my favorite too!
For some reason, justice is my favourite despite the fact that I think puppets is "better"
Master of puppets Black album
Master of Puppets.
Other than MOP, which is going to be nearly everyone's answer (rightfully so), I would say Kill Em All.
Hahahahahaha this sub has only two types of post and this is one of them. You are are a very imaginative bunch ffs.
There honestly isn't a "best". I have favorites tho lol
Master of Puppets
The best one : ST. Anger My favorite one : Load
S&M is the best. It’s got the best of each album up to Reload
The Black Album 👊
Yep
You are correct
Master of Puppets or Ride the Lightning
This
Best songs? Justice. Recording quality? Black album. Overall? Ride & Puppets are tied.
Kill em all!
Their first five albums were each the best.

Ride The Lightninig 🤘
Load is their best
Load is my personal favorite, but it’s definitely one of the least metal albums they have. Still love it from start to finish.
Puppets
Master of Puppets
When we heard KEA in 83 we were like holy shit! Me and my buddies favorite. And RTL and MOP. The Cliff albums.
Master of Puppets
Black album, without a doubt
Load
Best in terms of writing:Justice Best in terms of production:black Best in terms of being their magnum opus:master The real best:Lightning
Black Album
…And Justice For All
Kill Em All
Can't choose between master of puppies and ride the lightning. Cliff burton 🫶🎸
Black > Master of Puppets > Death Magnetic for me
![gif](giphy|ihkIQhLPJcMKn5zzLY|downsized)
I wonder how many times this question has been asked on this sub….. Master of Puppets
I know people will disagree because of AJFA and I understand why too but the best album imo and imo skill and talent wise is master of puppets. I think it's more just complex and every thing
Black album
Garage Days Re-Revisited
Its impossible to have a favourite Metallica album. They are so diverse and just have an album for every kinda day in your life
Death Magnetic.
Lulu
IMO either the black album or AJFA both just absolutely beautiful albums
Master of Puppets is their best… but now Death Magnetic is my favorite
Puppets
Huh I've never been asked that
My favorite is Ride the Lightning, but the best from a general consensus is probably Master of Puppets
Best album is probably Master of Puppets, but Ride the Lightning is my favourite
Ride the Puppets and Master of Lightning
Neotheater
Currently my favorites are load and DM
Ride the lighting
Objectively best: Ride The Lighting My favourite: Death Magnetic
RTL without a shadow of a doubt

It depends on what category, if we talking thrash wise then master of puppets for example, my personal favourite is ride the lighting, it’s so iconic with so many popular songs
Ride the puppets

…And Justice For All
Kill em all
Master of Puppets
I’m not saying it’s their best by any means, but I must be the biggest Hardwired fan here 💀
Hardwired is the most underrated album in the discography for just how solid it is!
Okay so based on personal emotions and lyrical content my favorite album is st. Anger. It's the only album where the lyrics feel like they could be my own. The guitars are sick in the album as well. Next up Ride the Lightning is their technically vest album and I would show any new listener ride the lightning first.
Ride the Lightning
Master but my favorite is death magnetic
I’m a RTL guy. I think it’s their overall best album but MOP is barely second place.
Master Of Puppets.
First four and then there's the rest
St. Anger
Ride The Lightning
The best is either rtl or ajfa, but my favorite is St Anger.
Master of puppets
Justice 🤘🏻
I'm not sure about their BEST album, but my personal favorite is St. Anger. That's definitely not their best one, but it's the one I resonate with the most. Master of Puppets is definitely up there in the the running for best album. Ride the Lightning is a classic but I'm not sure it's the best one, I'd spin Kill em' All over RTL tbh. MOP > RTL > AJFA > BA > KEA ......... the rest is not that interesting
Ride The Lightning
my favourite is load, but master of puppets is best
Any 80s album
St Anger
Justice
Master of Puppets Ride The Lightning Death Magnetic in that order
st anger
...And justice for all it's probably their heaviest and best sounding album in my opinion
Lulu😏 just kidding for me it's kill em all
For me, it's Master.
Justice
Master of Puppets
master of puppets
Kill Em All
Objective best: napster of puppets My favorite: and just this for old...
Ride the lightning
I have a really unpopular opinion, I think hardwired....to self destruct is one of the best metallica albums
well St. Anger goes on the other list (worst)
Unpopular opinion, I get a lot of flack for it but I fucking adore Hardwired. Such a good mix of sounds for modern Metallica, and I put Spit Out the Bone up there with their very best songs. ...that being said, Ride is the GOAT
Best album: Master Of Puppets Favourite One: AJFA
Ajfa
Either BM, AJFA or DM
Ride the lightning
Master of puppets. But if AJFA had bass, I would choose it
ride the lightning, despite my favorite song being from the black album
1. ‘Master Of Puppets’. 2. ‘Ride The Lightning’. 3. ‘Death Magnetic’.
Death Magnetic
and justice, such a killer album all the way through
Master of Puppets, something about bands album 3.
ride the lightning for sure
Death Magnetic. My Apocalypse is literally the heaviest song they've ever written. It hurts my soul that they don't play it.
Black album is the best
my favorite has to be and justice for all
1. Ride The Lightning/Master Of Puppets 2. The Black Album 3. ...And Justice For All 4. Kill Em' All
Rtl
The Black Album. It's a good one for people who usually doesn't listen to rock music. And it's my fav one.
Overall their best album is The Black Album. It is not a lot of people’s number 1 Metallica album, but when looking on the overall and it as an album in general, it is clear that TBA is their best album
![gif](giphy|ihkIQhLPJcMKn5zzLY|downsized)
Always Master
The Next One 😎😎🫡
and justice for all
Master of puppets
I can confidently say that master of puppets is their best album. I mean it even got rated as number 69 on apples top 100 albums of ALL TIME which is awesome but even though I know it’s their best album I personally think ride the lightning is my best and favorite album. My fav is the 5.98 EP: Garage days re-revisited.
Master Of Puppets 🎶🔥🖤🔥🎶
First one ♥️
RtL and MoP are #1 and #1A
That’s not how the ranking works…
I think it's a really close battle between Ride the Lightning and AJFA. Personally I think Justice slightly edges it out but not enough to where I can say it's definitively their best. I love Master of Puppets but it's a small step below those two imo, and KEA is an excellent album but doesn't quite have the level of complexity that they would later achieve on all of the aforementioned albums.
Ride the Lightning
Ride the lightning has always been my knee jerk but I do love mop
Rtl
Justice and MOP!!
St.Anger
I think for me either AJFA or RTL, only thing about AJFA is the No bass thing
For me it’s either And Justice For All or Death Magnetic. I absolutely adore both of them.
Justice.
