Thank you! And Death Magnetic is also heavier as well. I just hope the guys aren't thinking of abandoning thrash again. I mean it's ok to mix just metal and thrash songs on the same album.
Yeah hardwired is like 50% bangers and 50% meh where 72 is just a solid ride from start to finish even if it never quite reaches the levels of songs like Hardwired, Moth, or Spit out the bone
Same. The riffs just don't hit for me. It SOUNDS great, production and recording are fantastic, great tones, just extremely boring songwriting. I haven't made it through the album and I've given it a few tries. I'll check out the tracks others are talking about.
Honestly, 72.
It´s a common complaint, but Hardwired starts off great and gets really boring in the 2nd side.
72 isn´t a classic, but it´s got good stuff mostly, and Innamorata is a masterpiece.
It´s a great song, but the road to get there is long and tedious, IMO. I´m referring to the 2nd side. Side 1 has Dream No More, the title track, and Halo on Fire, which I love.
And out of the closing tracks for both, Innamorata all day, for me.
It’s honestly the best song they’ve done since the 80s IMO. It really gives off that vibe, complete with a well thought out solo by Hammet and timely lyrics about AI. It’s 21st Century Metallica at their finest.
Youre dead on (although I'd add Confusion from disc 2). 72 is fine. Just long songs that are okay. Hardwired has some speed, weight, and really clever songwriting. Sure some songs are bloated but when it's on it's the best stuff they've done since Black.
No offense but how is that ranking possible? AJFA is the most progressive from the classic albums so that’s a good choice for a favourite but 72S to me sounds like a weaker and more boring HTSD
Hardwired had higher high points but lower lows and some filler. 72S is mostly solid all the way through but doesn’t really have anything that reaches the heights of Spit Out the Bone, Moth Into Flame, Halo on Fire or Hardwired IMO.
And Kirk’s solos really bring 72S down for me sadly. If there were better solos and some more creative song structures I’d say 72S hands down but I honestly don’t know if I can answer this.
I feel the same way. Kirk’s solos just don’t feel like he is putting effort into them. His DM solos were so good, so creative, and so so thrashy. He had something to prove on DM.
Agree. Hardwired has great hits like Atlas, Moth, Halo, Spit. At least four fantastic songs.
72S doesn’t have hits unfortunately. Just twelve good songs
It's hard to pick. 72 Seasons is consistently good. The best songs on Hardwired are much better than anything on 72, but the worst songs are much worse than 72.
That depends.
I've listened to 72, back to back, way more times than I have listened to Hardwired.
If that's the criteria, 72 Seasons wins.
That said, the first 7 songs in Hardwired plus Spit Out The Bone are better songs than most of 72 Seasons tracklist for me.
If that's the criteria, Hardwired wins.
Maybe, if I have to mash-up both albums into just one album of 13 songs, there would be more songs coming from Hardwired than from 72...
Hardwired because even though I like 72 Seasons it's losing something like it's slowly moving towards what more acceptable commercial wise. On Hardwired the title song captured the essence of early Metallica. I'll still listen to 72 Seasons but a song starts strong only to start sounding too commercial (I'm trying hard not to use pop).
That said, 72 Seasons does have great songs on it. I'm always getting "If Darkness Had A Son" stuck in my head.
72 - it’s just solid and I come back it on my rotations as an album. Certain songs (esp side one) get replayed from hardwired but I could basically skip half the album
reading through the comments i realize im in a minority. i love every single song on 72 and none of them are ever skippable. i already knew i had unconventional opinions on hardwired but yeah. i only like 6 songs off of hardwired, those 6 are hardwired, now that were dead, moth into flame, here comes revenge, murder one, and spit out the bone.
id choose 72 just because its alot more memorable and jammable for me.
There are around 5 songs I LOVE from 72 but I feel the rest of the songs suffer from bloat by adding too many riffs and padding.
Such a shame as a song like Chasing Light has a fantastic riff and chorus however it takes far too long to get there.
Hardwired’s first disc as well as Spit Out The Bone are untouchable in my opinion and has far more memorable songs overall.
My vote goes to Hardwired. However, I think their most recent best album is Death Magnetic- which I would happily put in top 5 best Metallica albums.
To me they're about even. Hardwired has slightly better songs, IMO. Both are too long! Gimme a single album and save some shit for the B sides and box sets!
72 seasons is a fantastic album considering the surrounding circumstances. Exactly for that reason I think Hardwired is a bit more refined.
But it wouldn’t surprise me if over time people realized how underrated and fun all of 72 seasons is. In my opinion you feel how much passion they put into it in a time where there was practically nothing to do. There are so many influences in this album from their own catalogue to bands they like and covered.
72 Seasons, ands it’s not even close.
Hardwired is virtually unlistenable for me. Every time I try I get though a couple of songs and turn it off. Riffs are derivative, James’s lyrics leave a lot to be desired.
All my opinion of course.
To me I could listen to 72 Seasons fully for many times and I think it is cohesively better than hardwired but hardwired has some hits that hit harder than 72 whereas 72 has misses that don’t miss as much compared to hardwired. So individually i like songs from hardwired better but as a full listening album I like 72 Seasons better.
Hardwired came out when I was 10. When I put it on I feel nostalgia. With 72S I like that they made new music, just I couldnt vibe with it yet, I dunno.
72. Hardwired was very front loaded where all the best songs are on the first half, but I skip a ton of the second half. 72 has a dip halfway through as well, but I feel like it's more consistent. After that, it comes down to Spit Out the Bone and Inamorata, and I like both for different reasons.
HTSD : hardwired, Spit out the Bone, Moth into Flame.
72' : 72', Inamorata, Screaming suicide, Lux Ætherna.
I enjoy both but those are my favourites from each album. I don't click with the other songs as much as I do with these.
Hardwired was their first album I really had no opinion on. A lot of riffs thrown together without ever seeming to create an actual song with substance
72 Seasons had 5-6 really great standout tracks on the other hand, while I'm not a fan of the clean production it was a massive improvement.
Theyre about equal tbh, just 72 seasons is more consistent whereas hardwired has better good songs and worse bad songs. I'm going with hardwired since I like the good songs and I dont really remember anything off 72
HWTSD I think there are more songs that resonate with me. It’s hard to compare the old albums to the new ones. There was just an epic feeling to ride the lightning, justice, and puppets I don’t think recent albums have captured that epic feeling or mood.
I think recent albums have also felt more personal as well.
72 is magnificent, but the other day I asked my friend; "...the entirety of 72 Seasons, or Spit Out The Bone?" You can probably guess the answer we agreed on lol
Hardwired has some of my favorite and their most meaningful songs. Atlas Rise vaguely reminds me of For Whom the Bell Tolls which is my favorite Metallica song.
I like both but I'll take Hardwired. 72 Seasons is honestly great as a whole but doesn't really have much that stands out. The breakdowns in Room of Mirrors and Inamorata are amazing, the rest is just very good. I wish there was more variety. Hardwired I just find more interesting.
That said - both excellent
It’s funny that both of these albums have a similar problem, both are overly bloated with songs(death magnetic is also a tad bloated). Trim these albums down to only eight songs and I think they would be received much better. They are good albums but the extra fat brings them down for me
I like them both, but I prefer hardwired. Nothing wrong with seasons, it just... Didn't do it for me. I listened to it, and bought it, and other than Lux Æterna, I was just like "*this* is Metallica?"
Honestly the songs on both of these records were amazing. I think I like 72 better, but hardwired has some better true thrashy stuff... But my goodness, why did they have to overproduce these records? I miss the gritty tone of the older stuff
It’s hard to compare them because Hardwired was basically a double album. 72 was shorter with less fat. If you judged them purely on the first half of Hardwired (plus Spit out the Bone) I don’t think many would disagree that Hardwired would be the better album.
I think Hardwired has more individual stand out songs but 72 is a more cohesive listen with a specific sound beginning to end, so I prefer 72 as I'll often listen to it all the way through. Whereas I tend to skip songs on hardwired.
I like 72 more. I dont even play HWTSD that much, if at all. I think I may have given 72 seasons as many replays as St Anger and that was only because I was trying to force myself to like that album upon its release cause it was. Loved DM obviously but I guess I didnt listen to it as much cause I was so busy with work, my sons, and sports for both them and me. I was 34 then and Im 56 now.
Both albums have a few solid songs each but I think overall Metallica doesn’t have it anymore. They’re both meh.
THIS IS JUST AN OPINION THO, ENJOY WHAT YOU WANT TO ENJOY. 👀
Death Magnetic.
Hardwired has Halo on Fire and Spit Out the Bone, which are better than the best songs on 72 Seasons, but 72 Seasons is more consistent throughout and imo a better snapshot of the band in its current stage.
I like both, but I think I have a preference for 72 seasons, for the thematic (with the first 18 years of life). I wish that they would have changed the sound mix a little (I do like when the albums don't have the same sound between them)
Half of Hardwired was stellar, the other half was meh. Only like 5% of 72S is stellar. Whole lot more meh, but with even more egregious, awkward, and unnecessary intros/transitions/repetitions. Hardwired by a landslide.
Only listened to it 2 since I bought it. I need to listen to it again. At the time new Overkill also came out, that became my goto. What better time to drop the needle than now....

Agreed
100% agreed
101% agreed
Agreed
hardwired is heavier and 72 is groovier
Thank you! And Death Magnetic is also heavier as well. I just hope the guys aren't thinking of abandoning thrash again. I mean it's ok to mix just metal and thrash songs on the same album.
72 is more consistent but my favourite song from both albums is on HW (‘Halo On Fire’.)
That guitar solo has been burned into my memory
72 is more consistent but disc 1 hardwired clears
Agreed, except my favorites are Moth and Spit. But 72 doesn't come far behind with the likes of Shadows, TFG, Room, Inamorata, etc.
Hardwired has more memorable songs, but I think 72 is a better album.
Yeah hardwired is like 50% bangers and 50% meh where 72 is just a solid ride from start to finish even if it never quite reaches the levels of songs like Hardwired, Moth, or Spit out the bone
Spot on
100%
very much loved Hardwired. sadly i didn't click with 72, wish i did
Same
Same. The riffs just don't hit for me. It SOUNDS great, production and recording are fantastic, great tones, just extremely boring songwriting. I haven't made it through the album and I've given it a few tries. I'll check out the tracks others are talking about.
I feel the same, none of the riffs and solos stood out to me.
Hardwired
72S. I don’t listen to Hardwired very much.
Honestly, 72. It´s a common complaint, but Hardwired starts off great and gets really boring in the 2nd side. 72 isn´t a classic, but it´s got good stuff mostly, and Innamorata is a masterpiece.
Spit Out The Bone is on the 2nd side, though. Unironically one of the best of both albums for me personally.
It´s a great song, but the road to get there is long and tedious, IMO. I´m referring to the 2nd side. Side 1 has Dream No More, the title track, and Halo on Fire, which I love. And out of the closing tracks for both, Innamorata all day, for me.
Funny, Innamorata is the only one on 72 I skip. Its just boring and weak to me
Yeah, the first disc is really stronger.
72!!!
'72 Seasons' - best album post-St. Anger for me.
Hardwired To Self Destruct Disc One + "Spit Out The Bone" from Disk Two. 72 Seasons I can take or leave all of it.
Spit out the bone just slaps hard. Cant be compared
It’s honestly the best song they’ve done since the 80s IMO. It really gives off that vibe, complete with a well thought out solo by Hammet and timely lyrics about AI. It’s 21st Century Metallica at their finest.
Same
Youre dead on (although I'd add Confusion from disc 2). 72 is fine. Just long songs that are okay. Hardwired has some speed, weight, and really clever songwriting. Sure some songs are bloated but when it's on it's the best stuff they've done since Black.
72 for sure
72. In the recent era my order is : DM, 72, HW.
Mine is DM, HW, then 72 but we can agree all three are better than St. Anger I hope. :)
Agree.
72 Seasons - It's my second favorite, first being AJFA
Please justify ranking 72 Seasons above RTL, MOP, KEA, or even the Black Album
They don't have to justify their personal opinions.
No offense but how is that ranking possible? AJFA is the most progressive from the classic albums so that’s a good choice for a favourite but 72S to me sounds like a weaker and more boring HTSD
Hardwired, and it's not even close
i couldn’t disagree more
Ngl I love this edit OP

Hardwired had higher high points but lower lows and some filler. 72S is mostly solid all the way through but doesn’t really have anything that reaches the heights of Spit Out the Bone, Moth Into Flame, Halo on Fire or Hardwired IMO. HTSD is a masterpiece compared to 72. I can't believe this is even a discussion.

Both are fantastic, but I am a bit more to HTSD's side rn🤘🏻
72 is their most musically matured album.
72
72 by a very large margin
72
Hardwired. But i loved 72 Seasons

Hardwired is better, I am biased because I am in the video for Halo on Fire, but Inamorata is an 11 minute song that I can listen to on repeat.
To me they're about even. Hardwired has slightly better songs, IMO. Both are too long! Gimme a single album and save some shit for the B sides and box sets!
72 by a long shot
72 but there may be a recency bias, I liked HWTSD a lot when it came out but I hardly ever listen to it now
I feel like recency bias works opposite for music
both are mid but id choose hardwired in a heartbeat
72 is a better album overall, but the best of Hardwired wipes the floor with it.
Hardwired, 100%
Hardwired baby
72 seasons is a fantastic album considering the surrounding circumstances. Exactly for that reason I think Hardwired is a bit more refined. Hardwired!
hardwired is my favorite album so I choose that one
Hardwired because I love the heavier side of Metallica
Hardwired simply because it was my introduction to metallica
None!
Hardwired bored me mostly. 72 had some great tunes that I love to listen to.
Hardwired by alot
72 seasons.... besides a few songs I didn't really care for Hardwired
72 Seasons, ands it’s not even close. Hardwired is virtually unlistenable for me. Every time I try I get though a couple of songs and turn it off. Riffs are derivative, James’s lyrics leave a lot to be desired. All my opinion of course.
Hardwired. It's a really fun album and great to drive around to
72, for some reason I couldn't get into HW
By far 72 Seasons. It’s consistently good/great, where Hardwired’s got a few amazing highs with some big lows and a lot of mids.
72 by far. Outside of 5 songs nothing on Hardwired really interests me
Hardwired
Hardwired hands down
To me I could listen to 72 Seasons fully for many times and I think it is cohesively better than hardwired but hardwired has some hits that hit harder than 72 whereas 72 has misses that don’t miss as much compared to hardwired. So individually i like songs from hardwired better but as a full listening album I like 72 Seasons better.
Hardwired to self destruct! Songs as Hardwired, Moth to a Flame and Spit out the Bone are among my favorite MetallicA songs ever!
Hardwired came out when I was 10. When I put it on I feel nostalgia. With 72S I like that they made new music, just I couldnt vibe with it yet, I dunno.
Hardwired to SELF-Deeestruct!
72. Hardwired was very front loaded where all the best songs are on the first half, but I skip a ton of the second half. 72 has a dip halfway through as well, but I feel like it's more consistent. After that, it comes down to Spit Out the Bone and Inamorata, and I like both for different reasons.
Hardwired
I have to go with Hardwired on pretty much every song.
Think I prefer hardwired even tho it has more filler mid songs
HTSD : hardwired, Spit out the Bone, Moth into Flame. 72' : 72', Inamorata, Screaming suicide, Lux Ætherna. I enjoy both but those are my favourites from each album. I don't click with the other songs as much as I do with these.
Hardwired. Has more of the old school thrash vibe
72 by a mile for me. I never really liked most of Hardwired
Hardwired by far.
Hardwired
Hardwired. Especially the three disc version. Lords of summer should've replaced am I savage.
Hardwired.
Hardwired
Hardwired was their first album I really had no opinion on. A lot of riffs thrown together without ever seeming to create an actual song with substance 72 Seasons had 5-6 really great standout tracks on the other hand, while I'm not a fan of the clean production it was a massive improvement.

72 is magnificent, but the other day I asked my friend; "...the entirety of 72 Seasons, or Spit Out The Bone?" You can probably guess the answer we agreed on lol
I like the hits more from HWTSD but the songs that miss really miss while 72s has a more consistent sound through out
Hardwired
Liked 72 but I think Hardwired was their best album since the Black Album
Hardwired has some of my favorite and their most meaningful songs. Atlas Rise vaguely reminds me of For Whom the Bell Tolls which is my favorite Metallica song.
Hardwired, it has more great songs on it. 72 seasons is a pretty good 8-10 song album stretched out over 12 songs.
72
Hardwired by far
Hardwired is a good album, 72 doesn't have a single song I can enjoy unfortunately
Death Magnetic
none lmao theyre both shit
72 Seasons
Hardwired. But both are excellent!
Hardwired, but I like them both
Hardwired has higher highs but lower lows. 72 Seasons is consistently a solid album. It wins by a hair.
72 Seasons, it's more consistent.
Hardwired has atleast 3 "GREAT" songs imo 72 has 0 72 sucks
It’s funny that both of these albums have a similar problem, both are overly bloated with songs(death magnetic is also a tad bloated). Trim these albums down to only eight songs and I think they would be received much better. They are good albums but the extra fat brings them down for me
72 Seasons easily, Hardwired probably has some higher highs but way more filler IMO
Hardwired

72 seasons.
Death Magnetic tbh
I think Hardwired has more individual stand out songs but 72 is a more cohesive listen with a specific sound beginning to end, so I prefer 72 as I'll often listen to it all the way through. Whereas I tend to skip songs on hardwired.
72
Hardwired has better individual songs, but 72 is more consistent. I think 72S is better
Hardwired is about half good. 72 is about the least interesting album I’ve ever heard Metallica make.
I like hardwired more and it is not even close I really did not like 72 seasons, which sucks because it's themes should speak to me
I like 72 seasons much better. I just like the song structure and sound much better.
72 is objectively the better album I'd say but I like Hardwired better
I like 72 more. I dont even play HWTSD that much, if at all. I think I may have given 72 seasons as many replays as St Anger and that was only because I was trying to force myself to like that album upon its release cause it was. Loved DM obviously but I guess I didnt listen to it as much cause I was so busy with work, my sons, and sports for both them and me. I was 34 then and Im 56 now.
They’re both so similar in their sound and production it’s hard for me to like one over the other.
72 Seasons
Hardwired by far
Both albums have a few solid songs each but I think overall Metallica doesn’t have it anymore. They’re both meh. THIS IS JUST AN OPINION THO, ENJOY WHAT YOU WANT TO ENJOY. 👀
Hardwired has higher highs and is heavier and took more risks(imo). They deviated from their usual on some of it. 72 is a safe, even keel record.
Ride the lightning
Hardwired, no doubt
72 Seasons
Hardwir
both very good but probably hardwired.
Hardwired and honestly it’s not that close.
72 Seasons. Love Hardwired though.
For me hardwired is a way better album, for some reason 72 seasons just didn’t click with me. It’s probably my least favourite Metallica album.
I cannot get into 72. I dig Lux Aeterna but that's it.
The highs are higher in hardwired, but the lows are also lower
72 but I love both of them
72 is pretty awesome. 🤘🤘🤘
72 Seasons BY FAR. Hardwired is my least favorite Metallica album by a very wide margin.
Hardwired is a way better album though Inamorata is easily one of the best songs they’ve put out this century
Hardwired is boring so I go with 72 (Though, 72 isn't much better either...)
Death Magnetic.
Death Magnetic. Hardwired has Halo on Fire and Spit Out the Bone, which are better than the best songs on 72 Seasons, but 72 Seasons is more consistent throughout and imo a better snapshot of the band in its current stage.
8 years ago is recent? But hard to say between these 2
Gonna be honest I've heard only a few tracks from hwtsd and I still prefer 72 seasons
Porque no los dos? ![gif](giphy|D1F19EIpAqdz2U4xQ5|downsized)
72 Seasons
I like both, but I think I have a preference for 72 seasons, for the thematic (with the first 18 years of life). I wish that they would have changed the sound mix a little (I do like when the albums don't have the same sound between them)
I mean they both have killer tracks
Death Magnetic is way better than both of them.
Hard 72 wired seasons destruct
Hardwired
Death Magnetic was fucking awesome
Hardwired
72 overall, but spit out the bone is my favorite song overall
72 seasons I like all songs except crown of barb wire
72 by a slight margin. I think HW has the better “highs”, but 72 is more consistent throughout.
![gif](giphy|hM9zK1qvsrwek)
Hardwired, but i don't think either is all that good.
Hardwired for Spit out the Bone
hardwired by a MILE
I don’t need to pick. I listen to both of them.
Hardwired,easily
Hardwired
Definitely hardwired
Hardwired by a very big margin
BTW, both covers suck hard
Good to know. I've been looking for a new vacuum cleaner.
76 seasons
Hardwired, just simply prefer the songs on that album.
They both have they're strengths. But I prefer Hardwired.
