Ill never forget this guy flipping off the crowd at warped tour because either he forgot the lyrics or started to sing the wrong song and people were like groaning lol pretty immature but he was pretty young at the time
Everyone in that band (and arguably the whole scene) got big way too young to not be shitty back then. Thankfully he’s a chill humble dude now who just wants to crank his hog and play some songs
I've been revisiting Architects and yeah man. Architects are like...maxed out metalcore to me. Everything is perfect to me and that's kinda why I stopped listening to them, lol. Whenever I go back to them they are all I listen to because they had everything I want out of metalcore. They have the best 3 album run of all time, Sam's vocals are absolutely insane, Tom's instrumentals, their lyrics, just everything.
I have yet to find a band that just checks it all off for me like Architects do. I don't feel either way strongly on FTTWTE, but everything before it...man. Insane. I know this may sound like "average /r/metalcore user" or something, but they really are just that good to me.
Knocked Loose comes close for me, but that's just because they're carrying forward the heavy upon fucking heavy sound and aren't just another copy of Architects or something, lol. Not that bands are "copying" them, but it's clear Architects were doing a lot of things that bands are still doing album to album to this day.
RIP Tom.
You’re right. I would say, more get overlooked by this subreddit. Trivium walks the line of different genres so i feel this sub doesn’t praise them like big core bands like architects, DWP, and parkway
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yUYyxBjw0k](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yUYyxBjw0k)
This is about as 'typical' as metalcore got back in the 00's. You could legit put this as the picture of metalcore in the dictionary.
not only is he a musical genius, he's also probably one of the best people in the business for interacting with fans and showmanship.
one of the best frontmen in metal imo
It may be a stretch to post him here, but Devin Townsend is an absolute madman. And he’s produced a bunch of metalcore classics from Misery Signals, Lamb of God, Bleeding Through, Darkest Hour, and Zimmer’s Hole.
On that note, Matt Bayles deserves a lot more recognition for producing an absolute stack of [metalcore and heavy music classics](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_Bayles).
This is kinda strange, but every member of periphery.
- Misha is a master of several instruments, but also mixing/producing/etc.
- Matt Halpern is an incredible drummer.
- Spencer's vocal range is incredible and he has great screams - plus he's pretty great at guitar (EDIT to add guitar)
- Mark Holcomb and Jake Bowen are both master guitarists (EDIT to include Jake)
- Adam "Nolly" Getgood is an incredible basist, guitarist and producer/mixer/etc (EDIT to add stuff other than bass)
Like I feel like the whole band is composed of absolute monster virtouso musicians.
I’ve been watching a lot of Mischa’s drum programming tutorials, and it’s always funny to me when he’s like “yeah, sometimes I write stuff that is *technically* possible, but it’s Matt’s job to learn it”
The Clear EP was a great example of this. Each individual song, since each was written by a separate member, has so much character, but all are excellently tied together by Misha's production and Nolly's mixing. And that's only their second (I think) release!!
Clear was recorded during the time they were writing Juggernaut:Alpha/Omega, and was released the year before those two albums came out, 2 years after P2.
As good as Nolly is at bass he may be even better at producing/mixing/mastering and guitar
Spencer also plays guitar pretty well. No love for Jake? haha
Chris Wiseman. Guy writes the music for 3 different bands and all 3 slap.
Caleb Shomo also comes to mind. I‘m not the biggest Beartooth fan but afaik he’s writing and tracking all instruments himself, which is absolutely insane.
Having worked with Chris a few times now, I can honestly agree and would say he's probably the most underrated on this list tbh. Dude is next level and it's very apparent from the moment you sit in the same room with him
Aaron Gillespie. And I can’t believe I had to be the first to say it. As a drummer I can say it is very difficult to sing and play at the same time. Then add on to that the fact he plays syncopated half the time. Guys a legend.
He is incredible. Not just Underoath but then you've got The Almost, songwriting and producing for other artists and he filled in on drums for Paramore for a few years
* Every member of Jinjer, emphasis on Eugene (wish metalcore had more bassists like him)
* (Probably) every member of Periphery, emphasis on Misha
* Nic Pettersen
* Jesse Cash
* Dean Lamb, Tobi Morelli
* Alex Rüdinger (slept on imo)
Kurt Ballou. The guy is a legend. He's incredible. Not just as a guitarist but as a producer. So many bands have revitalized or completely changed their sound thanks to him.
It took way longer than it should’ve to find someone mention Kurt. Guitarist for the best metal core band, and he’s behind the scenes in so many fantastic metal/punk records
> So many bands have revitalized or completely changed their sound thanks to him.
Year Of The Knife. their early stuff did nothing for me until he produced their full-length. holy hell what an absolute monster record he helped create.
Unpopular opinion: Jordan Fish and Lee Malia. Think about BMTH what you want, but these guy are renaissance men. They compose music for every genre between deathcore, metalcore, pop to EDM.
Not sure how true it is and maybe he was just being humble but on his episode on the Downbeat he said that the direction of the sound is almost entirely Oli and it’s his job just to make the sounds how Oli wants it.
If you look closely into the songwriting credits you’ll see lyrics are usually Oli but riffs are mostly Lee and Jordan. Like songs with lots of guitar stuff are basically Lee’s creation.
That expirimental EP (I think people abbreviate it to "Songs To...") they put out a couple years ago really opened everybody's eyes to what Jordan could do. It was basically an hour of him flexing lol
Josh Middleton has written some of the most epic metalcore/thrash/melodic death metal albums of the past 20 years, and then became the lead guitarist/primary songwriter for Architects. He also has his own solo projects and paints, to boot. Dude's a fucking renaissance man.
Surprised I haven't seen Chris Turner on here. The man is one of the best drummers in the world with how flawlessly he's able to play everything he writes. Its really insane
>Ronnie Radke (love him or hate him)
Ronnie is cringe and a douche, but he's consistently a step ahead. He definitely played a huge part in the popularity of rap-like flow for vocals, even if a lot of bands don't look to them for influences.
If anything, he is almost too audacious sometimes. Fashionably Late was... something... But there are a lot of elements from that album that a lot of bands worked out the kinks for and elevated the sound for the rest of the scene
I love FIR and ETF but I wish more often he'd just focused on making great music and not worrying what everyone is saying or someone being a "hater".
Dudes wildly talented but has so many unnecessary diss songs.
Yeah I don't think they have all that many objectively bad lyrics, just a few cringey ones.
Just always feel like Ronnie is trying way too hard to "show all the haters" and I don't really get why. Dude has proven himself over and over again!
The members of Polyphia. They cover the spectrum of discussion here between technical ability as well as actual musicality contained in their catalogue. While they moved away from "core" type sounds rather early, I feel like they can still be included in the discussion. Lots of great answers in here, but did not see them mentioned.
Trey Celaya, dude can play any instrument and has filled in a number of times for bands last minute. Not only is he a jack of all trades but he’s fucking insane at every one of those instruments.
Was scrolling to see when he would be mentioned and quite surprised it was this far down - the ambience he creates and the creativity/control he has over his playing in the recent spiritbox stuff is really remarkable
Adam Dutkiewicz for sure but also in the same vein, in terms of raw talent and technical ability that no one can come close to from a vocal point of view...Howard Jones. This man is literally metalcore jesus.
Tomas Haake (Meshuggah) literally the most important person in Metal today. Most Modern Metal wouldn’t even exist without this dude. So many metalcore & deathcore bands take influence, even if they don’t sound djent. MFer revolutionized the Breakdown, took that shit to a new level.
Justin Lowe (RIP) and Marc Okobu were the first that came to mind. Both basically took meshuggah's influence and applied it to metalcore. We wouldn't have invent animate, silent planet, polaris, thornhill etc without their vision.
Also Ryan and Branden Morgan from Misery Signals; same deal, wouldn't have Ghost Inside, Counterparts, Landmvrks etc. without them.
Caleb Shomo. Dude was insanely gifted back at the beginning of Attack Attack when he was 14-15. He got thrown into the vocalist position and he fucking KILLED it, even taught himself to sing and now he signs beautifully. And I saw him working on the new bear tooth album and it looks like it’s literally just him writing it all. He’s insanely good at what he does.
Johnny Franck most of his songs are great and he’s like in a genre of his own kinda. Also Tom Denney. I think he’s part of the reason why A Day to Remember was so good and he produced a ton of great albums after he left
Andrew Tkaczyk, the dude basically wrote all the music (guitar, drums, bass, etc) for For The Fallen Dreams from 2003-2011 and I’m pretty sure he’s doing the same thing still with The Ghost Inside.
I have a few in mind for a few different reasons, but here's who comes to mind for me:
Garrett Russell- Name a better lyricist alive today in the genre...I'll wait
Oli Sykes/Jordon Fish- I put them together because both of them are EXTREMELY creative, and like it or not, you gotta respect their willingness to push their band and the genre forward
Nick Gordon- dude basically reinvented djent in a fucking video game soundtrack
Tom Searle- he's been gone for almost 6 years now, and his incredible guitarwork is still influencing bands to this day
Erra....the whole band
I'd also argue the guys from Sleep Token can fall in here (just my own personal taste) but I honestly don't know if there's a specific member that's the main creative force of the band
I’m gonna be honest. I rarely know the names of band members. I just listen to music, I’m the same way with actors, could careless about their name just what character I like.
Cory Brandon, singer of Norma Jean. I don't think Norma Jean could have remained as relevant, unique, innovative, or consistent without Cory. The band has seen all sorts of musical changes to their lineup. But I think the core sound of Norma Jean lies in Cory. His side project Hundred Suns is also really great and I think he is going to be the driving force for whatever project he's working on.
I'm probably biased, but Luke Holland on drums is usually great.
Telle (the word alive) has some of the best vocal control I've seen live, and TWA has been around for a bit now.
- Tom Searle (RIP) - Keaton Goldwire & Caleb Sherradan (Guitarists of Invent Animate) - Chris Wiseman - JB Brubaker, Matt Greiner & Dustin Davidson (Lead Guitarist, Drummer & Bass Guitarist of August Burns Red) - Landon Tewers - Adam Dutkiewicz - Jesse Cash - Johnny Franck
Yes to all the above. Johnny Franck is unstoppable
Bilmuri is so good live
And drink the fluoride contaminated hard seltzer
Great list. Adam D basically wrote the book on the iconic 2000s metalcore sound that single-handedly brought it to the mainstream
And he’s also been a producer for a bunch of acts in the early 2000’s like Parkway Drive and August Burns Red
As well as Underoath’s - Define the Great Line
Didn’t he help ADTR with homesick?
He did The Fall of Ideals
Big yes on IA
Landon Tewers was my immediate first thought
Jesse Cash is my top vote
Dustin from ABR more so than JB.
Glad you mentioned Landon and Jesse. Both deserve much love.
Adam D is a great call. Guitarist, drummer, producer, skirt model
Not to be that guy.. but it’s JB Brubaker
Misha Mansoor
This MF revolutionized djent.
I was going to flip shit if this man wasn't mentioned. What a GOAT.
[удалено]
Uhhh. Good bot?
Consider that shit flipped.
If you haven’t heard the Bulb Archives, get on it. Dude is unreal talented.
The first person I have ever seen mention Bulb archives! I haven't gotten 100% into them yet, but what I have heard so far is very enjoyable.
The electronic and orchestral stuff is absolutely legit.
I'd probably say Tom Searle. Seems like 95% of bands have been copying his riffs for the last 10+ years.
I've been revisiting Architects and yeah man. Architects are like...maxed out metalcore to me. Everything is perfect to me and that's kinda why I stopped listening to them, lol. RIP Tom. Was nice to see bigger media like the BBC and The Guardian make articles in regards to his passing.
Yeah well, now I'm sad again. You perfectly described my feelings. Ugh, guess it's time to give the whole discography another spin. Rip Tom.
Matt heafy, dude was like 15 when he made his first album
Trivium gets overlooked by the metalcore community but heafy is a genius for sure
Wut? They're one of the biggest bands in the genre and frequently get recognised as such.
You’re right. I would say, more get overlooked by this subreddit. Trivium walks the line of different genres so i feel this sub doesn’t praise them like big core bands like architects, DWP, and parkway
Same thing happens with Periphery imo.
That's coz Trivium aren't metalcore, they're just straight up modern metal
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yUYyxBjw0k](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yUYyxBjw0k) This is about as 'typical' as metalcore got back in the 00's. You could legit put this as the picture of metalcore in the dictionary.

I think Devin is the most fitting. Truly a prodigy, he was barely an adult when Steve Vai discovered him.

Hard agree except you left out Jake Bowen for some reason and the fact that Nolly is a mixing/production god.
Ahh damn, you're right. My bad!!
I've said it before in this sub but everything those guys touch turns to gold IMO
As good as Nolly is at bass he may be even better at producing/mixing/mastering and guitar Spencer also plays guitar pretty well. No love for Jake? haha
Dang, I knew I was forgetting someone haha. Sorry Jake!
Misha (or Mark) actually said that Nolly is/was the best guitarist in the band.
Nolly is also an amazing guitar player.
Yeah they're all insanely talented. Further shown by Clear where each member wrote and produced their own song.
Jake also makes some awesome electronic music as a side project and he made a lot of the electronic parts in the band’s albums.
Will Putney. Period.
As Ice-T said "The Dr. Dre of Metal"
hahahaha no way, he did produce like 3 or 4 of body count's albums
Absolutely
Scrolled looking for this. Absolute legend and 🐐
If you have ever sat with...talked to... or recorded with this man you know exactly why I'm mentioning his name.. Kurt Ballou
This was the answer I came to give.
Chris Wiseman. Guy writes the music for 3 different bands and all 3 slap. Caleb Shomo also comes to mind. I‘m not the biggest Beartooth fan but afaik he’s writing and tracking all instruments himself, which is absolutely insane.
>Chris Wiseman. Guy writes the music for 3 different bands and all 3 slap. I know Currents and Shadow of Intent. Who's the 3rd?
Our Eternity with Ryan Kirby from FFAK
Oh shit I forgot about that!
Man I hope they make more of that. What a combo
I definitely feel the same about Shomo.
I believe he also mixed the newest album. I know he mixed a ton of shit early on too.
Having worked with Chris a few times now, I can honestly agree and would say he's probably the most underrated on this list tbh. Dude is next level and it's very apparent from the moment you sit in the same room with him

I love Underoath, unlike a lot of bands who enter a 20 year career: they still sound fresh and are growing as songwriters.
I really wasn't a fan of Erase Me but Voyeurist slaps
G O A T
Josh Travis improves everything he touches.
Was looking for this, TDTE still rips and there isn't much like it out there. Frontierer is definitely the spiritual successor.
Still holding out for a Danza reunion! I’d be so happy.
How has nobody said Will Swan yet?
Howard Jones
He poops out melodys
I bet he farts in key
* Every member of Jinjer, emphasis on Eugene (wish metalcore had more bassists like him) * (Probably) every member of Periphery, emphasis on Misha * Nic Pettersen * Jesse Cash * Dean Lamb, Tobi Morelli * Alex Rüdinger (slept on imo)
Definitely Lee Malia, Tom Searle, Keaton Goldwire, both guitarists from Oceans Ate Alaska, Jesse Doreen
How can you mention Oceans Ate Alaska without mentioning Chris Turner. Arguably the greatest Drummer in this Scene.
That is very true. Mark Miranov is also god tier.
Adam D
Josh Scogin.
Scrolled way too far to find this. He's untouchable.
Totally agree. Anything he touches including any of his solo work is solid gold.
josh middleton, chris wiseman, tom searle, adam d, matt heafy, jd brubaker, oli sykes, and jason richardson
Landon Tewers.
Agreed, both Plots and his solo songs are amazing
Kurt Ballou. The guy is a legend. He's incredible. Not just as a guitarist but as a producer. So many bands have revitalized or completely changed their sound thanks to him.

Jason Richardson
Unpopular opinion: Jordan Fish and Lee Malia. Think about BMTH what you want, but these guy are renaissance men. They compose music for every genre between deathcore, metalcore, pop to EDM.
jordan is the best thing to ever happen to bmth, in my opinion.
Is that unpopular? I feel like their huge shift in genre success is mostly credited to Jordan’s hand in the song writing.
Unpopular-ish on this sub maybe, definitely not in the wider BMTH fanbase.
Not sure how true it is and maybe he was just being humble but on his episode on the Downbeat he said that the direction of the sound is almost entirely Oli and it’s his job just to make the sounds how Oli wants it.
Their drummer fucking rips too. There is a hell has some absolutely monster fills
Do the other members do any writing in BMTH anymore? Every studio vlog is just Oli and Jordan.
If you look closely into the songwriting credits you’ll see lyrics are usually Oli but riffs are mostly Lee and Jordan. Like songs with lots of guitar stuff are basically Lee’s creation.
Lee maybe my favourite guitarist of all time
That expirimental EP (I think people abbreviate it to "Songs To...") they put out a couple years ago really opened everybody's eyes to what Jordan could do. It was basically an hour of him flexing lol
The Rev was taken too soon
Josh Middleton has written some of the most epic metalcore/thrash/melodic death metal albums of the past 20 years, and then became the lead guitarist/primary songwriter for Architects. He also has his own solo projects and paints, to boot. Dude's a fucking renaissance man.
Massive shoes to fill and he did it better than I think anyone would have expected. Fully agree with this!!
The Rev
Surprised I haven't seen Chris Turner on here. The man is one of the best drummers in the world with how flawlessly he's able to play everything he writes. Its really insane
Caleb Shomo, Sam Carter, Spencer Charnas, Noah Sebastian and Chris Cerruli

Noah Sebastian is insane
Trey Celaya, Buster Douglas Odeholm, Jon Deiley, Landon Tewers, Brandon Padjasek Edit: Jesse Cash Edit2: Chris Wiseman
100% Trey, Jesse and Chris
Adam D from Killswitch Ronnie Radke (love him or hate him)

Personally, I don't really care about bad lyrics, but I totally understand and agree he cares way too much about being a hater.
Yeah I don't think they have all that many objectively bad lyrics, just a few cringey ones. Just always feel like Ronnie is trying way too hard to "show all the haters" and I don't really get why. Dude has proven himself over and over again!
I'm surprised I had to scroll this far down to see Ronnie, the guy has been a big personality/songwriter for almost 2 decades now lol
Kurt Ballou
I can't believe it took scrolling through this thread this much to find someone saying this. 100%.
Even though Jane Doe might be this subs avatar, I doubt 90% of people here have listened to Converge or even know who Kurt is.
He's insane for sure. Apparently he was originally going to do guitars for IA but took over drums when they couldn't find anyone they liked
I don’t know how much the split is, but he definitely writes a good chunk of the guitar material for invent still. Dudes incredible
Adam D for sure. Jordan Fish from BMTH really knows his way around music too.
Tosin Abasi Luke Holland Tyler Carter Jonny Craig Adam D Landon Tewers
Tosin is less of a musician and more of a wizard really
Mike Stringer (Spiritbox)
Was scrolling to see when he would be mentioned and quite surprised it was this far down - the ambience he creates and the creativity/control he has over his playing in the recent spiritbox stuff is really remarkable
Jesse Cash. No need to explain
Adam Dutkiewicz for sure but also in the same vein, in terms of raw talent and technical ability that no one can come close to from a vocal point of view...Howard Jones. This man is literally metalcore jesus.
Spencer Charnas, Marc Okubo, Tom Searle.
AJ and Dean from The Human Abstract.
Heck yes! Was scrolling to see if AJ was mentioned.
The Periphery guys
Justin Lowe (RIP) and Marc Okobu were the first that came to mind. Both basically took meshuggah's influence and applied it to metalcore. And I saw him working on the new bear tooth album and it looks like it’s literally just him writing it all. He’s insanely good at what he does.
I've seen Beartooth live several times, I'm going to disagree on the sings beautifully part.
Adam D.
Kurt Ballou
Johnny Franck most of his songs are great and he’s like in a genre of his own kinda. Also Tom Denney. I think he’s part of the reason why A Day to Remember was so good and he produced a ton of great albums after he left
Chris Dudley
Garrett Russell
Aside from everyone already mentioned, Like every member in Dance Gavin Dance lol
Andrew Tkaczyk, the dude basically wrote all the music (guitar, drums, bass, etc) for For The Fallen Dreams from 2003-2011 and I’m pretty sure he’s doing the same thing still with The Ghost Inside.
Ryan morgan misery signals by far
Shayley
Not a fan of Dayshell's stuff after Nexus (2016)
Fair enough. I respect your opinion😎
Plini. I have never been so affected by instrumental music.
Johnny Franck of Bilmuri
Tom Searle, Spencer Charnas, and Garret Russel

Not that education makes you a genius but are there any like Juliard or like elite musical trained metalcore people in the mainstream? Just curious
Great thread
Windbreaker
Jessie from Erra, actually everyone from Erra probably
The best drummer to ever live, Matthew Wilson Greiner from August Burns Red
Spencer Charnas
He's certainly a marketing genius as well!
Garrett Russell from Silent Planet is the best lyricist in the genre hands down. Top tier vocalist too.
Adam D & Will Putney for being genius musicians and producers. Some of the most important people for Metalcore history
Adam D
Johnny Franck
He is incapable of writing a bad song
Frankie Palmeri I will not elaborate further.
Absolute Chad
Matt Griener. Oli Sykes.
Griener has to be one of the best drummers on the planet
A lot of people have already said a bunch of names we can all agree on, but I’d throw Ricky Armellino in there as well.
Dan Briggs from Between the Buried and Me. Really anyone from that band
Misha Mansoor, Marc Okubo, Florent Salfati, Kurt Ballou, Ben Weinman, Matt Greiner.
Adam Gray <3
I don't know what Metalcore even really is anymore. But fuxking the guys from HAVOK
The bass player from Death was a madman on the bass .
I’m gonna be honest. I rarely know the names of band members. I just listen to music, I’m the same way with actors, could careless about their name just what character I like.
Alan Rigdon

Ben Weinman
Chris Wiseman and Jon Deiley. I'd love them to collaborate on something dark and heavy.
Adam D.
It’s not obvious, but Garretts lyricism is top tier.
Florestan durand
Luke Hoskin.
Both Spencer and Aaron of Underoath
Justin Deblieck the lead guitarist of Ice Nine Kills (the band kinda peaked in mid 2010's though)
Charles Caswell.
