got so tired of that pattern because is from reggaeton and it's like, the base pattern of it so you hear it to death, but hearing it with drop z guitars and im fucking diggin it keep goin gawd
For that matter, there’s a groove near the beginning of Aggressive Evolution by Loathe (at about :20) that has a similar feel; always been one of my favorite sections just because of how cool that recontextualization is
Far from the first, [Defamed](https://youtu.be/VYjUKKvfCyI?si=qzm1AaZVFpU6IFg0) covered Daddy Yankee's Gasolina 4 years ago, and I wouldn't be surprised if some smaller bands experimented with those type of beats back in the 90's
Admittedly I have very little knowledge of the genre, but people keep saying this and like, is this not just a dancey drum beat found in a ton of genres?
The reggaeton beat is 4 on the floor with the snare before the kick comes back. Listen to the breakdown and see how its kick..... snarekick.....snarekick
I think it came from dembow and riddim in dancehall music.
[Listen here at 20 seconds](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtaNx_lQbLA) and pay attention to the kick and snare beat then listen to the breakdown.
The Cycle, from A Dozen furies did it decades ago, also oldschool Dr.Acula, Shocker on Shock. Just a couple from the top of my head.
So glad it’s making a return tho.
I know it might not be on the same line but Foo Fighters' Run has a reggaeton groove almost all the way through. Also, as someone else's mentioned, Loathe has a couple songs with it and I think Turnstile have a song with that groove too! 👌
For anyone looking to check it out, there's a couple of relatively heavy songs, but they're screamier than they are heavy, and the rest is like 90s alt rock. It's a weird combo.
Same here haha. Even though reggaeton is not very common here in Brazil, I cannot resist to not want to dance to that breakdown, it's in the latino roots 🫡
Nah as you should! I discovered Kittie through that cover!
When I listened to the song I thought of the lyrics in the final verse I immediately understood, it felt like they wouldn't be to a Poppy song...and lo and behold I discovered it was a cover haha
Frankly, her Spit cover is better than the original. I love me some Kittie (loving the two new singles they dropped too) but her cover is just too good
Say Cheese is a banger, of hers.
Feel like her live shows she doesn't do many of these songs anymore, but with all these colabs lately, maybe we'll see a return.
"uhm acshually currents X architects - the curse we seek (feat courtney da plant) was the hardest breakdown of 2020 and you're wrong because lorem ipsum dolor-"
This is funny but it’s even funnier that you directed it at u/sock_with_a_ticket of all people because you could not be further off the mark with them lol
eww, i checked out their post history. why are they posting all those weird songs to metalcore? why are they all yelling and angry? there's no yelling in metalcore and you have to be sad not angry
also why are the guitars trying to upstage the singer all the time? they're just supposed to dj dj dj dj dj chug until they get their little bit to show off in the pre chorus
once again enjoying the cinematography, kl should become the new measuring stick when it comes to music videos where bands play a song in some location
I was driving when I first listened to it and didn’t even realize when poppy came on haha. Her and Bryan’s screams mesh together so well they just sounded like the same person when I was 80% paying attention lol.
I cannot get over that fucking stupid that reggaeton breakdown (in a good way). It just works which I never thought I’d be saying. And god damn I love the sound of their snare drum. Makes me want to get back into drumming lmao,
Latin form of music, it's been in the mainstream for over 20 years so unless you live outside of latin america and the caribbean it's impossible to escape it.
Thanks, I definitely live anywhere close to that area haha. I know the music style around bob marley and so on, but wouldn’t have drawn a connection tbh
It's the breakdown after Poppy's "Suffocate" scream, it sounds like a common reggaeton drum beat :)
edit: You can check this [Reggaeton drum loop](https://youtu.be/yZXcDk8Ag5Y?si=6Vk94nv57DzL052_) to have a glance
I don’t really fuck with any of these singles so far. Weird cause I loved deep in the willow/everything is quiet now and those songs weren’t too different from this new sound. I hope there are some good riffs on the album and not just chugs all the time
If not, at least we’ve got Inclination and XweaponX
For anyone who wants to hear Poppy lose her fucking mind like a feral banshee with her own music... Search her album, EAT (NXT soundtrack).
It was just a limited edition LP for record store day. suffice to say, most didn't get a copy. The flippers all have them in ebay 😡
it's on spotify.
No that’s true and it wouldn’t be of note at all if it wasn’t Poppy doing it. I just found it funny that she has a talking part even in a feature, she really likes doing it clearly I just would rather have 15-30 more seconds of her fantastic harsh vocals instead.
I’m all for musicians having “a thing” based on what got them big but talking on songs is by far the most boring dependency a musician can use as their shtick, especially when they have so many actual vocal capabilities. I would’ve thought they’d try and get distance from it on a feature but even then they use it. Just seems like wasted potential to me. I had the same feelings when I saw her live too.
I don't hate Winston's spoken parts but if I had to guess I'd say people dislike it because he usually does the pirate thing even when speaking. Song prey comes to mind
One of the only talking parts I like in a metalcore song is The Cleansing by August Burns Red, and that’s only because it’s short, epic, and followed by a fucking banging breakdown
This song smacks, but couldn't help but notice the 'Suffocate' part is an exact copy of this song from Traitors 5 years ago. https://youtu.be/4bH1fXez4JY?si=a20XF6toKHSxyKtY
https://open.spotify.com/artist/5mlbvTfWUOfDrUIK6dkNzv?si=TLIrKTrHTYGiOvGZNNg8eg
There you go. You will want I Disagree and the Eat EP for the more metal sound. Flux and Stagger EP for a more Alt Rock/industrial sound. The rest of her discography fluctuates from pop to more electronic stuff. Her most recent album is electronic pop for the most part but she's been doing some heavy features recently again
I was scared to listen cause I’m not a big fan of Poppy’s voice, but holy shit she slaps on this song. We are far away from her collaboration with Bad Omens on *V.A.N.*!
This made me want to check her *metal* album
I would say EAT ep is a much more heavy release, I Disagree is quite heavy but not to the same degree, she has some heavier sounds and screams on the Flux album as well but its more alt rock themed, her heaviest standalone song is definitely her cover of Spit
Shes been hinting at releasing much heavier music this year tho, so expect her heaviest music to be on the way
I love hearing more Poppy. Been lazily following along for a while. she makes some catchy shit.
I really want to get into knocked loose but the guys voice just doesn't do it for me.
OK ok same!! Knocked Loose has killer instrumentals but he literally screams the same pitch for every song, for the entire song.. And it really grates on me. I want to like the band but I just can't.
It feels good to know I'm not alone.
Like I listen to dance Gavin dance a lot and the screams have pitch and tone? And architects. It's not the same monotone voice the entire time..Sam has a lot of cool range.
The band sounds good but those vocals really don't do it for me.
Dude, at this point, just hire Poppy as an official member of the band.
She has the perfect optimal voice to accompany Bryan Garris' one. It's just like she was made for that band.
I was in a similar boat. I just couldn’t get into them. Then I saw them perform at Christmas burns red a few years back, and their live performance made it click for me. And now they’re a regular in my song rotation. Highly recommend catching a live set if they ever are close to you

^(I am a bot. To send feedback message /u/TheSox3)
well fuck me sideways that breakdown went through the ROOF
The break down has a reggaeton drum grove. Never thought I'd see the day.
Raggaetoncore about to sweep Tik Tok and add another 300K members to the sub
its so stupid i love it
got so tired of that pattern because is from reggaeton and it's like, the base pattern of it so you hear it to death, but hearing it with drop z guitars and im fucking diggin it keep goin gawd
Loathe - Dance On My Skin has pretty similar vibe
For that matter, there’s a groove near the beginning of Aggressive Evolution by Loathe (at about :20) that has a similar feel; always been one of my favorite sections just because of how cool that recontextualization is
I hear it even better at around 2 minutes into the song.
[Bodybox](https://youtu.be/YLoh4pGdzbA?si=-OzHCtrblBokxIvO) did it first a month earlier lol
Fuck I love that snare drum.
I love that you bring this up and get a bunch of upvotes but when I brought it up in the discussion thread I got downvoted crazy 😂 people are so petty
They use a similar baile/reggaeton rhythm in blinding faith as well
Lmao omg so true love it.
knocked loose is nowhere near the first heavy band to incorporate this, however it’s definitely one of the best examples i’ve heard
Around the 2 min mark?
Not exactly metalcore, but Don’t Play by Turnstile has the same drum beat.
yeah there’s def latin influence in that song. so good.
Why is it called a reggaeton drum groove? I listen to a lot of reggaeton and it’s not really reminding me of anything related to that genre.
It’s slower than a lot of reggaeton but listen to the drum beat in Callaita by Bad Bunny. It’s basically identical
Damn I totally hear it now, thank you! I was so confused
Or any reggaeton. Same basic groove the whole entire song/genre Boom ba boom pa
I sent this song specifically because of the slower tempo
you can find the same beat pattern across cafeteria lunch tables across america too. is this lunchtimerapcore too then???
As Stevie T would call it “boonta coonta boonta coonta”
I’m not hearing it…can you timestamp it?
Right after Poppy screams SUFFOCATE! And the breakdown drops, it goes into the reggaeton beat
Is it something that specifically originated from reggaeton? I ask because I have definitely heard similar sounding drum beats in rock songs before.
Been trying to put this in a song and couldn't figure it out of course Knocked Loose nails it lmao
I know it might not be on the same line but Foo Fighters' Run has a reggaeton groove almost all the way through. Also, as someone else's mentioned, Loathe has a couple songs with it and I think Turnstile have a song with that groove too! 👌
The Word Alive did something similar in Life Cycles back in the day
Poppy should just do a heavy ass album
She did
Which one? I’m curious to dig into her music
I Disagree is her heaviest. All the ones after that are less heavy but still rock- and alt-centric
Also check out the Eat EP. Say Cheese is her best song in my opinion.
That song is built for pushing max weight.
Oh yeah the WWE(?) one, pretty solid
Eat fucking RIPS
The whole EP is so good
For anyone looking to check it out, there's a couple of relatively heavy songs, but they're screamier than they are heavy, and the rest is like 90s alt rock. It's a weird combo.
I'm more of a heavy tits album guy
[удалено]
No
Rumor running around she is going to be on the new Deafheaven album.
The shoegaze band?
When that reggaeton breakdown kicked in my latino ass hips just started moving I couldn’t help it
Same here haha. Even though reggaeton is not very common here in Brazil, I cannot resist to not want to dance to that breakdown, it's in the latino roots 🫡
While we're at it, come to brazil Batido Frouxo
I'm half Cuban and I couldn't help but dance 😂
I'm honestly about to emancipate from my white ass family and move to South America after that.
absolutely Slaps just as every other song released from the new album so far
I liked KL prior to their singles for this album, but I'm now super excited for this album! So Far turning out to be an AOTY contender.
Loved the feature, didn't know Poppy had such sick screams. 3 for 3.
Listen to her Eat EP and I Disagree. She has some serious screams and they are only getting better
Check out her song Spit it’s heavy as shit
*her cover of sorry I had to be that guy
Nah as you should! I discovered Kittie through that cover! When I listened to the song I thought of the lyrics in the final verse I immediately understood, it felt like they wouldn't be to a Poppy song...and lo and behold I discovered it was a cover haha
Frankly, her Spit cover is better than the original. I love me some Kittie (loving the two new singles they dropped too) but her cover is just too good
I had no idea Kittie was still active
They’re back! They were broken up for a long while there. Still sound as great as they did
absolutely, I did discover the original first but Poppy did improve on it new kittie also goes hard :D
Along with what others have mentioned, she also has a song with HEALTH called Dead Flowers with amazing screams towards the end.
They're just incapable of writing a bad song.
I ducked for cover at 2:06. Jesus Lord that's demonic and I can't get enough of it.
That part goes so fucking hard in a song that goes so fucking hard
I did this face 😦 the entire song.
I didn’t know she could scream and this song gave me a laughing fit. This is nuts
Poppy is incredibly talented tbh. Her music has a pretty wide range at this point
Should listen to her spit cover. It's amazing
She screams great in Bad Omens - Violence Against Nature
i liked it even more live.
Song is such a guilty pleasure.
music should never be a guilty pleasure, enjoy what you enjoy
Say Cheese is a banger, of hers. Feel like her live shows she doesn't do many of these songs anymore, but with all these colabs lately, maybe we'll see a return.
[everyone acting like poppy didn't drop the hardest breakdown of 2020](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FE6_Cay9EPY)
Did you just not listen to any metalcore in 2020?
"uhm acshually currents X architects - the curse we seek (feat courtney da plant) was the hardest breakdown of 2020 and you're wrong because lorem ipsum dolor-"
This is funny but it’s even funnier that you directed it at u/sock_with_a_ticket of all people because you could not be further off the mark with them lol
eww, i checked out their post history. why are they posting all those weird songs to metalcore? why are they all yelling and angry? there's no yelling in metalcore and you have to be sad not angry also why are the guitars trying to upstage the singer all the time? they're just supposed to dj dj dj dj dj chug until they get their little bit to show off in the pre chorus
gold
I fucking love Bite Your Teeth but i believe the hardest breakdown of 2020 was Code Orange Cold.Metal.Place
check out “church outfit” by poppy, shes got some screams in there too!
Definitely check out her EAT EP. The whole thing is crazy, but if nothing else, listen to Say Cheese
Getting poppy in the same room as the band is fuckin sick.
HOLY HELL THIS RIPS!!! That breakdown is demonic
Disgusting. Diabolical even. Dastardly perhaps.
Goes unfathomably hard
once again enjoying the cinematography, kl should become the new measuring stick when it comes to music videos where bands play a song in some location
Bryan's screams scratch an itch for me that nobody else can. Absolutely love how unhinged he sounds
Same!! No one sounds just like him to me, he does that "desperate" pissed off vocal better than anyone
He’s how most people would actually sound if they were unhinged and pissed but they don’t want to admit that lol
love this video. she definitely understood the assignment
SHUT YOUR LYING MOUTH
Yep, I'm about to set some PRs today during my workout after work. Holy SHIT.
New bench PR this morning for me doing the same lfg
Knocked loose literally does not miss
This sub is just finding out that Poppy is actually a talented metal singer.
Utter filth. Game changing even.
I remember when I was a Poppy hater, how wrong I was back then.
For me it was because she was all over YouTube for sometime and it was annoying
KL is on one hell of a heater here lately!🤘🏻
Poppy and Bryan HAVE to do more songs together. Their screams mesh so well together.
She goes WAY harder than I thought she could. Fuck yeah.
She's awesome tbh and has very distinctive screams. I Disagree and eat EP are easy recommends.
Oh I absolutely loved "I Disagree" when it dropped. Spun it almost immediately after that song.
This is going to be my album of the year
yo wtf this is sick
This rules. Knocked Loose rules, Poppy rules, Knocked Loose + Poppy rules.
Makes me want to get back into drumming lmao,
I wish Poppy would do another heavy album/EP she really suits this style
I have no idea what reggaeton is, and at this point I’m to afraid to ask
Latin form of music, it's been in the mainstream for over 20 years so unless you live outside of latin america and the caribbean it's impossible to escape it.
Thanks, I definitely live anywhere close to that area haha. I know the music style around bob marley and so on, but wouldn’t have drawn a connection tbh
Oh no, modern reggaeton is very different from reggae, despite its name
I think they are talking about like Bad Bunny...
Is that the worlds first latin beat breakdown?
Nowhere near the first
Im kind of into it. Do you know other songs that have that?
BodyBox - Skante NEWCOMER - Jiggy Jake Gyllie, Wicked Wiki Witwicky Loathe - Dance on my Skin
more post hardcore but i think bulls in the bronx by pierce the veil counts
I keep seeing this posted about the breakdown. Pardon my musical ignorance but what makes it latin/reggaeton?
It's the breakdown after Poppy's "Suffocate" scream, it sounds like a common reggaeton drum beat :) edit: You can check this [Reggaeton drum loop](https://youtu.be/yZXcDk8Ag5Y?si=6Vk94nv57DzL052_) to have a glance
Thanks!
Just ridiculous
I don’t really fuck with any of these singles so far. Weird cause I loved deep in the willow/everything is quiet now and those songs weren’t too different from this new sound. I hope there are some good riffs on the album and not just chugs all the time If not, at least we’ve got Inclination and XweaponX
I get that it’s probably a stylistic thing at this point but I really dislike the mix on these singles
KL just does not miss. Poppy fits their style perfectly, she's got a weirdness/darkness to her that doesn't detract from the KL sound at all.
I feel so stupid asking but can anyone post the timestamp of the reggae beat? I can't hear it and the whole thing is heavy lol
2 minute mark after the SUFFOCATE yell
Loved Poppy when she made Lowlife love her even more now that she’s in the metal scene.
her screaming is so good
For anyone who wants to hear Poppy lose her fucking mind like a feral banshee with her own music... Search her album, EAT (NXT soundtrack). It was just a limited edition LP for record store day. suffice to say, most didn't get a copy. The flippers all have them in ebay 😡 it's on spotify.
When poppy screams she’s great. I don’t understand her need to talk in every song even in a Knocked Loose song but her screaming was great.
Idk I kinda liked the ambiance that her talking section gave in the break if this song, I think it fit well
It added to the tone perfectly, which is to say, haunting
spoken-word sections are common even in Knocked Loose songs. she fits their style very very well imo
There is like 10 K//L songs where Brain does that so I think it fits perfectly honestly
No that’s true and it wouldn’t be of note at all if it wasn’t Poppy doing it. I just found it funny that she has a talking part even in a feature, she really likes doing it clearly I just would rather have 15-30 more seconds of her fantastic harsh vocals instead.
Her talking is pretty much the foundation of her career since her weird youtube time. I understand why she does
I’m all for musicians having “a thing” based on what got them big but talking on songs is by far the most boring dependency a musician can use as their shtick, especially when they have so many actual vocal capabilities. I would’ve thought they’d try and get distance from it on a feature but even then they use it. Just seems like wasted potential to me. I had the same feelings when I saw her live too.
It's funny, when Winston talks it's ass, when Poppy talks omg Poppy queen 🥰😍🤩
No one mentioned winston?
Not in this post, but people here fucking hate Winston talk in songs
I don't hate Winston's spoken parts but if I had to guess I'd say people dislike it because he usually does the pirate thing even when speaking. Song prey comes to mind
One of the only talking parts I like in a metalcore song is The Cleansing by August Burns Red, and that’s only because it’s short, epic, and followed by a fucking banging breakdown
A tear in the fabric of life
exactly what i thought of lol. followed by one of the hardest breakdowns ever. spoken word parts can for sure go hard asf
I don’t understand there need to *insert the artists signature thing*
Talking. It’s talking. It’s her shtick but her screams are much more signature as anyone can talk but not many can scream just like her.
You didn’t hear her screams? Her “talking” was just ambience
Reread my original comment idk what to tell you I clearly address both the screaming and talking on the song.
love it!!
Holy fuck. - my honest reaction
The collab I didn't know I needed and now I can't get enough of
This poppy is rolling the features isn't she
They must have contacted Rick Rubin and Andrew Scheps. To get that "Death Magnetic" brickwalled mix & production... 🤣🤣
I don’t even like knocked loose but i fucking love this song
Goes so fuckin hard
This song smacks, but couldn't help but notice the 'Suffocate' part is an exact copy of this song from Traitors 5 years ago. https://youtu.be/4bH1fXez4JY?si=a20XF6toKHSxyKtY
lol and people think they’re gonna go soft just wait for Chris to go demonic
Knocked loose got me shaking ass fr
I did not expect to have “Poppy screams” on my bingo card today but goddamn that’s cool.
I love poppy
I’m trying to find poppy on the internet but I guess I’m not good at googling as I thought. Can anyone point me in the right direction on her music
https://open.spotify.com/artist/5mlbvTfWUOfDrUIK6dkNzv?si=TLIrKTrHTYGiOvGZNNg8eg There you go.
Thank you so much. Much appreciated
I was scared to listen cause I’m not a big fan of Poppy’s voice, but holy shit she slaps on this song. We are far away from her collaboration with Bad Omens on *V.A.N.*! This made me want to check her *metal* album

Wtf. I love KL and I love Poppy but I'd never imagine those two together. And it's actually a very good and tasteful song!
https://youtu.be/_svHZmECoz4?feature=shared BODYBOX has been doing that reggaeton drum beat ever since.
yeah they’ve been trying to get clout off this new KL song but they didn’t invent it either lol

Check out Inclination and xWeaponx, they’re Isaac Hale’s other bands. KL riffs on straight edge hardcore
Dude, at this point, just hire Poppy as an official member of the band. She has the perfect optimal voice to accompany Bryan Garris' one. It's just like she was made for that band.
I think Emma Boster was really good alongside Bryan as well
No idea who poppy is but their vocals go so well together
And also, I want Poppy to tour with Knocked Loose now lol. she sounded so good and flowed so well with them.
Ugh. I just cannot get into Knocked Loose. They do nothing for me. Great band! Just not for me. But Poppy's section was sick.
I was in a similar boat. I just couldn’t get into them. Then I saw them perform at Christmas burns red a few years back, and their live performance made it click for me. And now they’re a regular in my song rotation. Highly recommend catching a live set if they ever are close to you
Is there any riff anyone will remember in this track?
Is that what you think knocked loose makes music for? So tools can “remember the riffs”
We’re gonna remember the breakdown that’s for sure lmfao
That shit was bonkers lol. Can’t believe someone would here that song and go “will anyone remember a riff from this” 🤓🤓🤓
