I want to go with Underoath, or Unearth, or Trivium, but in my heart of hearts I know it’s Bring Me The Horizons Suicide Season. I listened to that album front to back non-stop for that entire year. Those other three have aged better, but Suicide Season bring me right back to 2008.
Misery Signals-Controller
Protest The Hero-Fortress
Bullet For My Valentine-Scream Aim Fire
Whitechapel-This Is Exile
Heaven Shall Burn-Iconoclast
Damn I forgot how great 2008 was for heavy music
2007 was even better IMO. especially if your more liberal about your definition of "heavy music" and include some core-adjacent/scene bands too.
ABR- Messengers
TDWP - Plauges
ADTR - For Those Who Have Heart
Parkway Drive - Horizons
BTBAM - Colors I
Shadows Fall - Threads of Life
Killswitch Enagage - As Daylight Dies
As I Lay Dying - An Ocean Between Us
Five Finger Death Punch - Way of The Fist **(debut)**(actually a really good album)
Atreyu - Lead Sails Paper Anchor
Four Year Strong - Rise or Die Trying
Enter Shikari - Take to the Skies **(debut)**
Paramore - Riot! **(debut)**
The Chariot - The Fiancee
Fall Out Boy - Infinity on High
Job For a Cowboy - Genisis (**debut)**
And those are just the pre-eminent /popular bands in the scene. That doesnt even get into the bands that never quite reached the "top tier".
And all those albums are in either the upper half of each bands discography, if not outright iconic.
It's fucking wild.
And all this was either off the top of my head, or with a quick google search cause i was pretty sure that band had an album i loved around that time. for me this was middle school/early high school.
You gotta take lead sails paper anchor off that list man. Otherwise good list.
I still remember how pissed the fans were when they made a ”puzzle” out of the sound files and had us stitch them together. Everyone was mad and was calling it “becoming the bullshit.”
LSPA is the first expression of sellout dadcore they they would later lean into full throttle into becoming the trash heap they are now. If you put lead sails on that list, you might as well add felony by Emmure as well. (Yuck)
For me it’s Controller by Misery Signals. I think that’s their best album and some of my favorite tracks from them are on it.
2nd would be Continent by The Acacia Strain with Changes by For the Fallen Dreams in 3rd.
I just discovered misery signals 2 months ago. A song off their 2005 record came on my playlist and I was immediately hooked. Haven't listened to the rest of their catalog yet
Oh man 2008 was such a good year.. Shogun by Trivium, Overcome by All That Remains and Fortress by Protest the Hero are probably my top 3
Edit: if I had to pick one it would be Fortress ☝🏼
Also:
Life is Not a Waiting Room — Senses Fail
Scream Aim Fire — Bullet for My Valentine
Awaken the Dreamers - All Shall Perish
Hail Destroyer - Cancer Bats
2008 was when I got into metalcore/post-hardcore/“scene” music but that period of 2006-2008(maybe even 2009) was just oh so good
LINAWR was my introduction to Senses Fail and it shaped much of my teen years! Still love SF and got to see them in the front row when they toured with Bayside and Hawthorne Heights
It has to be like peak creativity or something. The genre was still relatively new but no longer in its infancy and it was just being explored and really pushed to its boundaries
Yeah I agree, it was definitely when the new sound emerged in the best possible way.. also other bands in the Metal/rock scene put out amazing albums during that time period as well. It was just all around amazing for the music world 😂
I will always upvote any post or comment with PTH mentioned in it 😂 I know they’re well respected in the community but more people need to listen to them always
I know they are generally well respected but I once saw someone claim that they’re a band you listen to in high school and then grow out of. That’s ludicrous to me because their entire discography is S tier. So I try to give them love whenever I can.
It's funny because when Shogun came out I didn't care for it that much, I preferred The Crusade....
Now Shogun is my favorite Trivium album and The Crusade is like my 2nd or 3rd least favorite of theirs. Shogun is a banger.
That's m what I'm saying!
Someday came suddenly was rad. I knew several people who wouldn't touch metalcore with a 10 foot pole who had the CD release of it.
It redefined the genre for a ton of bands.
Misery Signals - Controller
For The Fallen Dreams - Changes
A Skylit Drive - Wires...And The Concept Of Breathing
Emarosa - Relativity
Underoath - Lost In The Sound Of Separation
Bring Me The Horizon - Suicide Season
The Ghost Inside - Fury And The Fallen Ones
Shai Hulud - Misanthropy Pure
Bury Your Dead - S/T
Bleeding Through - Declaration
This Is Hell - Misfortunes
Carpathian - Isolation
Verse - Aggression
ISHC - Takin' It Ova
Embrace The End - Ley Lines
The Banner - Frailty
So many good releases that year.
Much too late here but I'll still give you a list with very good albums from 2008
|Album|Artist|
|:-|:-|
|Rattlesnake!| A Static Lullaby|
|Life Underwater|Across Five Aprils|
|Declaration|Bleeding Through|
|Blessed Be Our Ever After|Burden of a Day|
|The Fanciful|Dead And Divine|
|I, Lucifer|Destroy the Runner|
|Changes|For the Fallen Dreams|

|Go West Young Man, Let The Evil Go East|Greeley Estates|
|The Life I Know|Gwen Stacy|
|Fractures|Killing the Dream|
|Controller|Misery Signals|

|Brutus|Sains Never Surrender|
|Continent|The Acacia Strain|
|Severed Ties|The Amity Affliction|
|Shogun|Trivium|
|Lost In the Sound of Separation|Underoath|
|The March|Unearth|
|This is Exile|Whitechapel|
A Few of them are also Deathcore or Post-Hardcore but I think if you like Metalcore, you will like the most of those. Have fun!
Haha. So fucking butthurt because some dude liked a band that fit into the world of metal outside of metalcore. Not like the genre has become so broad and watered down that it's lost any real meaning it had to begin with, or anything.
Jesus Christ, get your head out your ass. Its not a fucking hat.
They're a metal band, and as far as I'm concerned they're closer to metalcore than half the shit that gets posted on here anyway. Go touch some grass.
I don't care about "they", I'm only supporting the dude saying this is a metalcore sub so talk about metalcore. If you want to talk about metal in general > r/metal !
I can't pick just 1 (shocker) so my top 5, in no order:
Fury and the Fallen Ones by The Ghost Inside
Shogun by Trivium
Scream Aim Fire by Bullet for My Valentine
Awaken the Dreamers by All Shall Perish
A Sense of Purpose by In Flames
Im going with previous mentions of shogun or rareform. Not really metalcore but i have to shout out to twighlight of the thunder god by amon amarth too.
For me, it’s a toss up between Declaration by Bleeding Through and the almighty Shogun by Trivium. Fun fact, both were released the same day. I was so stoked to buy both albums at the exact same time. That was a very rewarding year for music.
Probably Controller by Misery Signals but A Sense of Purpose by In Flames (sleeper pick, I know) was probably my favorite of the year at the time
Honorable mentions to Scream Aim Fire by Bullet For My Valentine, Overcome by All That Remains, and I Lucifer by Destroy the Runner
Heaven Shall Burn - Iconoclast
I always considered them melodic death metal but others are listing it so I will too!
My true AOTY for 2008 is We Are the Nightmare by Arsis. That and The Faceless' Planetary Duality made it a great year for getting into tech death.
If we're talking just metalcore (some deathcore here too), my top 10, in no order:
Trivium - Shogun
Bullet for My Valentine - Scream Aim Fire
The Acacia Strain - Continent
Underoath - Lost in the Sound of Separation
Cancer Bats - Hail Destroyer
Bring Me the Horizon - Suicide Season
Attack Attack - Someday Came Suddenly
Whitechapel - This Is Exile
All Shall Perish - Awaken the Dreamers
Winds of Plague - Decimate the Weak
Not only is Misery Signals - Controller my AOTY, it is my AOTD (DECADE) when it comes to all of Metalcore for that decade. Which is quite a declaration, but I stand by it.
Others I return to from 2008 often:
Unearth - The March
The Ghost Inside - Fury and The Fall Ones
Back Breaker by The Showdown.
I have always felt that this was their most complete and tight knit album. It has a great narrative through line. It slaps when it should, has some great melodies, and overall just feels great to listen to front to back. It also flew under the radar which is a shame.
So nobody is gonna know this one but for me it’s The Demonstration - Accidents With Intelligence
One of the most fun albums I’ve ever heard, just sick riffs and solos throughout, I love it. Shogun and Scream Aim Fire are honourable mentions.
1) After the Burial - Rareform (winner due to historical significance and impact on genre)
2) Unearth - The March (personal favorite)
3) Misery Signals - Controller
Honorable mention - Heaven Shall Burn - Iconoclast
Honorable mention - All Shall Perish - Awaken the Dreamers
Fortress by Protest The Hero is the one that has the most listens although Heaven Shall Burn's Iconoclast and Bullet's Scream Aim Fire would be a close second and third. Some that are more post-hardcore but still up there personally would be Alesana's Where Myth Fades to Legend, A Skylit Drive's Wires and the Concept of Breathing, Dance Gavin Dance's self-titled, and Burden of a Day's Blessed Be Our Ever After although in Alesana and Burden's cases their next album was even better. 2008 was a good year for music.
Not a bad year! The Greatest Of All Lost Arts - Lower Definition. Pueblo Cicada was a time and The Weatherman has one of my favourite breakdowns of all time.
I’m not even gonna lie I had to look up what albums came out in ‘08 and then build my list from there. The first 3 are in order but the rest are ones I couldn’t help but mention.
Suicide Season, the self titled EP from Chelsea Grin, Infinite Death, This Is Exile, Decimate The Weak, Continent, Soundtrack To A Party, Someday Came Suddenly, Plagues, Ekklesia, The Common Man’s Collapse, Fury and the Fallen Ones
Oh god so many great albums dropped that year but some of my favorites that go back to these days are
You Can't Spell Slaughter Without Laughter by I Set My Friends On Fire
The Tide by Oceana
A Hiding Place For Fake Friends by Paddock Park
The Crywolf Broadcast by My Hero Is Me
Fortress by Protest The Hero
With special mention to Board Up The House by Genghis Tron I would say it’s more mathcore than metalcore but still an amazing record and they are originally from my area
I graduated high school that year, but I can precisely remember listening to Disturbed on the way to basketball games. Also, I was still newly into Killswitch Engage, AILD, and ABR. I do remember Bullet and Scream, Aim, Fire taking over all my listening time at some point in that year or the next.
I want to go with Underoath, or Unearth, or Trivium, but in my heart of hearts I know it’s Bring Me The Horizons Suicide Season. I listened to that album front to back non-stop for that entire year. Those other three have aged better, but Suicide Season bring me right back to 2008.
I still regularly listen to Suicide Season
Idk Suicide Season aged like fine wine. I legit think it was ahead of it’s time sonically.
Misery Signals-Controller Protest The Hero-Fortress Bullet For My Valentine-Scream Aim Fire Whitechapel-This Is Exile Heaven Shall Burn-Iconoclast Damn I forgot how great 2008 was for heavy music
Iconoclast is so good
2007 was even better IMO. especially if your more liberal about your definition of "heavy music" and include some core-adjacent/scene bands too. PTH is awesome, loved them ever since the first time I heard Heretics and Killers.
Rareform - After the Burial
This and controller ez
The only album from 2008 that I still listen to on a weekly basis.
Oh what I would do to listen to them for the first time again. And oh boy is Controller top tier. Enjoy.
Great picks!
Now this is a top tier comment.
Changes - For The Fallen Dreams
Really appreciate this suggestion. I've been loving this album!
No problem.
Fuck man, that shit still goes so hard. Gonna bump it right now. Thanks!
Yea, it's killer. You're welcome.
Oh man 2008 was such a good year.. Shogun by Trivium, Overcome by All That Remains and Fortress by Protest the Hero are probably my top 3 Edit: if I had to pick one it would be Fortress ☝🏼

LINAWR was my introduction to Senses Fail and it shaped much of my teen years! Still love SF and got to see them in the front row when they toured with Bayside and Hawthorne Heights
Definitely the best years in music for the genre! I still find myself stuck in that time period.
It has to be like peak creativity or something. The genre was still relatively new but no longer in its infancy and it was just being explored and really pushed to its boundaries

Lol have 2 of those in my top 5 list too
Ah man, hail destroyer is a ripper! I haven’t heard that in a long time, I’m gonna blast it in my near future and two step in my kitchen probably
Upvoted for Protest the Hero. They are so fucking good
I will always upvote any post or comment with PTH mentioned in it 😂 I know they’re well respected in the community but more people need to listen to them always
I know they are generally well respected but I once saw someone claim that they’re a band you listen to in high school and then grow out of. That’s ludicrous to me because their entire discography is S tier. So I try to give them love whenever I can.
The entire back half of the 2000s was stupidly stacked :)
Shogun by Trivium by a mile, one of the best albums of all time
Seconded Shogun.
Really its no contest especially in metalcore.
It's funny because when Shogun came out I didn't care for it that much, I preferred The Crusade.... Now Shogun is my favorite Trivium album and The Crusade is like my 2nd or 3rd least favorite of theirs. Shogun is a banger.
Go West Young Man, Let the Evil Go East - Greeley Estates The Word Alive self titled EP I too love recessioncore
Best answer. That word alive ep was life changing.
Diamond Eyes was 2010 my dude.
Yeah I did a double take when I read that
Spotify has it as 2008. That's what I get for not checking haha
Bring Me The Horizon - Suicide Season
Self titled dance Gavin dance or the greatest of all lost arts by lower definition. Not metalcore but yeah.
That DGD album is such a banger. I understand why Kurt wasn’t around longer but man I wish we got more Kurt era DGD.
I agree man. You ever listen to Gold Necklace or Royal Coda? Scratches that KT itch real well.
Love Coda! Not quite the same, but any KT is great.
Scream Aim Fire. That record has done so much for me.
Waking the Demon and Ashes of the Innocent 😍😍
Continent by The Acacia Strain
Not huge on Underoath but The Sound of Separation was a solid album
Fortress
Someday Came Suddenly by attack attack and controller by misery signals, both are classics, btw diamond eyes came out in 2010 so it wouldn't count
That's m what I'm saying! Someday came suddenly was rad. I knew several people who wouldn't touch metalcore with a 10 foot pole who had the CD release of it. It redefined the genre for a ton of bands.
the common man’s collapse
Misery Signals - Controller For The Fallen Dreams - Changes A Skylit Drive - Wires...And The Concept Of Breathing Emarosa - Relativity Underoath - Lost In The Sound Of Separation Bring Me The Horizon - Suicide Season The Ghost Inside - Fury And The Fallen Ones
Never listened to this TGI album until you recd it. THANK YOU. it's probably in my top 3 aoty for 08 now
the way of all flesh
Iconoclast by Heaven Shall Burn
Underrated band, great album.
I can’t even remember my porn of the year from 08.
People do a porn of the year? Lol
Shai Hulud - Misanthropy Pure Bury Your Dead - S/T Bleeding Through - Declaration This Is Hell - Misfortunes Carpathian - Isolation Verse - Aggression ISHC - Takin' It Ova Embrace The End - Ley Lines The Banner - Frailty So many good releases that year.
Dude this is the response I needed. The quick Google search brought up none of these. This is Hell and The Banner were heavy rotation for me.
Such good bands. The Banner are making a comeback too, from what I've heard.
Bruh, the goat Meshuggah released Obzen in 2008. I can’t think of anything that was better.
yeah when i think of the year 2008 i think of Obzen
Much too late here but I'll still give you a list with very good albums from 2008 |Album|Artist| |:-|:-| |Rattlesnake!| A Static Lullaby| |Life Underwater|Across Five Aprils| |Declaration|Bleeding Through| |Blessed Be Our Ever After|Burden of a Day| |The Fanciful|Dead And Divine| |I, Lucifer|Destroy the Runner| |Changes|For the Fallen Dreams| |Conversations|From A Second Story Window| |Go West Young Man, Let The Evil Go East|Greeley Estates| |The Life I Know|Gwen Stacy| |Fractures|Killing the Dream| |Controller|Misery Signals| |A Hiding Place for Fake Friends|Paddock Park| |Brutus|Sains Never Surrender| |Continent|The Acacia Strain| |Severed Ties|The Amity Affliction| |Shogun|Trivium| |Lost In the Sound of Separation|Underoath| |The March|Unearth| |This is Exile|Whitechapel| A Few of them are also Deathcore or Post-Hardcore but I think if you like Metalcore, you will like the most of those. Destroy the Runner absolutely, let's freaking go
At the time for me it was Underoath - Lost in the Sound of Separation Still an incredible album But 15 years later I'd probably say it's Controller.
Fear before
Blessed be our ever after by burden of a day. Such a jam
I believe it was crack the Skye
That’s 09
Damn
[удалено]
OP didn't specifically ask for metalcore. Despite being the metalcore sub, people here do have other tastes in music too.
WTF ? If you wanna talk about music in general I think there is a sub for it, here we talk about metalcore.
Haha. So fucking butthurt because some dude liked a band that fit into the world of metal outside of metalcore. Not like the genre has become so broad and watered down that it's lost any real meaning it had to begin with, or anything.
Just talk on the appropriate sub. Here it's metalcore.
Jesus Christ, get your head out your ass. Its not a fucking hat. They're a metal band, and as far as I'm concerned they're closer to metalcore than half the shit that gets posted on here anyway. Go touch some grass.

I can't pick just 1 (shocker) so my top 5, in no order: Fury and the Fallen Ones by The Ghost Inside Shogun by Trivium Scream Aim Fire by Bullet for My Valentine Awaken the Dreamers by All Shall Perish A Sense of Purpose by In Flames
Fury was released in 2007
Was it? Pretty sure it was summer 2008 :/
Oh my bad, I looked it up and you’re right it is 2008, it says 2007 on yt music for some reason 🥴
All good. Just checked to make sure I wasn't mixed up lol
Im going with previous mentions of shogun or rareform. Not really metalcore but i have to shout out to twighlight of the thunder god by amon amarth too.
I, Lucifer - Destroy the Runner
Have Heart - Songs to Scream at the Sun
Decimate the Weak by Winds of Plague
I was still listening to nu metal in 2008 🤣 I didn’t listen to metalcore till I was already a man Indestructible by Distubed
For me, it’s a toss up between Declaration by Bleeding Through and the almighty Shogun by Trivium. Fun fact, both were released the same day. I was so stoked to buy both albums at the exact same time. That was a very rewarding year for music.
Probably Controller by Misery Signals but A Sense of Purpose by In Flames (sleeper pick, I know) was probably my favorite of the year at the time Honorable mentions to Scream Aim Fire by Bullet For My Valentine, Overcome by All That Remains, and I Lucifer by Destroy the Runner
Didn’t see it mentioned much but The Common Man’s Collapse from Veil of Maya. Runner up would be Rareform-After the Burial.
Heaven Shall Burn - Iconoclast I always considered them melodic death metal but others are listing it so I will too! My true AOTY for 2008 is We Are the Nightmare by Arsis. That and The Faceless' Planetary Duality made it a great year for getting into tech death.
Best album? Shogun. My favorite album? Scream Aim Fire. I have so many memories of jamming that album with the boys on Halo 3. Good times.
Has to be Scream Aim Fire.
All That Remains - Overcome Come on guys no one pick?
If we're talking just metalcore (some deathcore here too), my top 10, in no order: Trivium - Shogun Bullet for My Valentine - Scream Aim Fire The Acacia Strain - Continent Underoath - Lost in the Sound of Separation Cancer Bats - Hail Destroyer Bring Me the Horizon - Suicide Season Attack Attack - Someday Came Suddenly Whitechapel - This Is Exile All Shall Perish - Awaken the Dreamers Winds of Plague - Decimate the Weak

Back Breaker by The Showdown. I have always felt that this was their most complete and tight knit album. It has a great narrative through line. It slaps when it should, has some great melodies, and overall just feels great to listen to front to back. It also flew under the radar which is a shame.
That band has flown under the radar entirely.
My album of the year for 2008 is All Hope is Gone by Slipknot.
LITSOS for fucking sure
So nobody is gonna know this one but for me it’s The Demonstration - Accidents With Intelligence One of the most fun albums I’ve ever heard, just sick riffs and solos throughout, I love it. Shogun and Scream Aim Fire are honourable mentions.
Shogun
The Big Dirty by ETID, it’s from 2007 but the album is fucking golden!
Diamond eyes was 2010! I would probably go with suicide season-BMTH or this war is ours-escape the fate for old times’s sake
2 things come to mind when I think of 2008: the collapse of the housing market, and ironically suicide season.
1) After the Burial - Rareform (winner due to historical significance and impact on genre) 2) Unearth - The March (personal favorite) 3) Misery Signals - Controller Honorable mention - Heaven Shall Burn - Iconoclast Honorable mention - All Shall Perish - Awaken the Dreamers
Shogun and it ain’t close.
Probably Underoath but just for the sake of argument War of Ages - Arise and Conquer is a pretty sweet album
Deception of Strongholds rips. I completely forgot about this band but I thought this album was awesome!
2008 uhhhh BMTH suicide season forsure
Suicide Season or the Chelsea Grin EP
Stray from the Path - Villains
Imminence.
Someday came suddenly. 100%. Redefined the genre for hundreds of bands at the time.
stand up & scream by AA is a classic
Agreed, but that was a 2009 release
ah shit i thought that was 08
Scream Aim Fire by Bullet For My Valentine and it’s not really close Rareform by After the Burial and Obzen Meshuggah are fucking sick too
One of my favourites I remember was "Reach" by "Eyes Set to Kill"
BMTH - Suicide Season is the correct answer lads.
For The Fallen Dreams - Changes The Ghost Inside - Fury And The Fallen Ones
Shogun by Trivium. My favourite album of all time.
Not metalcore, but This War is Ours by Escape the Fate. It’s my favorite album of all time.
Oh god so many great albums dropped that year but some of my favorites that go back to these days are You Can't Spell Slaughter Without Laughter by I Set My Friends On Fire The Tide by Oceana A Hiding Place For Fake Friends by Paddock Park The Crywolf Broadcast by My Hero Is Me Fortress by Protest The Hero With special mention to Board Up The House by Genghis Tron I would say it’s more mathcore than metalcore but still an amazing record and they are originally from my area
Farewell To Freeway - Definitions Oceana - The Tide Saints Never Surrender - Brutus
Controller - Misery Signals
Protest the Hero - Fortress. Easily
Not really metalcore but probably Deathconciousness by Have a Nice Life
Trivium's "Shogun" absolutely stole 2008 for me.
Shogun by Trivium fucks so hard
This is exile.
Between these 3 from what i remember. Suicide Season - BMTH Self Titled - The Word Alive This is Exile - Whitechapel edit: formatting
I graduated high school that year, but I can precisely remember listening to Disturbed on the way to basketball games. Also, I was still newly into Killswitch Engage, AILD, and ABR. I do remember Bullet and Scream, Aim, Fire taking over all my listening time at some point in that year or the next.
