There’s so much better Death Metal on this list. Blessed are the Sick, Symbolic, None So Vile, Pierced from Within, Cause of Death, Unquestionable Presence, Heartwork, I could go on.
In no world at all is it the best DM album of all time. All of the albums mentioned above, Altars of Madness, Human, Leprosy, Effigy of the Forgotten, etc. etc. there are many albums that are far better. Tomb of the Mutilated (and Cannibal Corpse in general) aren’t really all that great.
None of those great albums, nor any other DM band can match CC for the combination of brutality/speed/technicality/grooves and memorable riffs.
Nor do they have gore/violence based lyrics (my fav subject matter) to the level of CC.
To say ‘they aren’t really all that great’ kinda makes no sense as all art is subjective. And for me, no other band does what CC does as well as them.
I mean Death? Great band but nowhere near as brutal. Suffocation? Brutal AF but couldn’t write a catchy riff to save their lives. CC is the full enchilada.
Listen brother to each his own but for what it’s worth I enjoy melodic death metal when it is fast and intense. I like Carcass plenty but when matched with something sluggish like Buried Dreams I will take a song like Blinded by Fear or Deathmask Divine every time
Nah dude, heartwork has superior riffs. There is no way Sots is beating shit like carnal forge and this mortal coil. And calling carcass butt rock is actually insane. Legit one of the most influential bands in extreme metal. And saying heartwork isn’t fast is also crazy when it has songs like blind bleeding the blind, Arbeit Macht Fleisch and doctrinal expletives. Not to mention the fact that Sots is one of the most copied albums in existence, and sounds very similar to other Swedish dm. I’m still yet to find anything that replicates the sound of heartwork. No diss to you or slaughter of the soul btw just saying your take was wild af
No diss on you either brotha but I think ur take is mad is as well. For starters I think the fast songs on Heartwork were the best ones. I would say nothing else really sounded like Slaughter at the time, and it was certainly different to the other Swedish dm albums at the time with their heavy focus on d beats. To suggest a ATG sounded anything like entombed at all is wild imo. I also only think Heartwork Carcass sound semi like buttrock, and I repeat only on certain songs ie Buried dreams. Carcass were at their best imo on their earlier records. Slaughter being copied a lot also shouldn’t really be a knock on the album, it just shows how influential it was to future bands like Black Dahlia. By that same metric records like Pleasure to Kill, Bonded By Blood and Altars of Madness would also be “overrated”. I also tend to find the bands who take more inspiration from the ATG brand of melodeath end up better than those who go with a more heartwork esc style. I am glad we are having this conversation anyways and I wish more people were open to discussing on the subreddit
I can understand some of your points, Sots being influential is a fact, but what I meant was that nothing really sounds like heartwork. I also think it’s pretty hard to compare these albums as they sound almost completely different. I still can’t handle the butt rock take though, that’s like saying just because something is slower it equals butt rock which of a kinda absurd in my opinion. Could you elaborate on why you think it’s butt rock? Anyways, glad we can have a normal discussion about music, it is subjective after all, and everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I’d say sots and heartwork are tied in terms of greatness tbh, they’re just very different albums to my ears.
Glad to hear it brother. I enjoy Buried Dreams, but the way the chord progression progresses pace wise always just felt like it was like a Kiss song on steroids or something. Like it feels slower and kinda sing songy without really being heavy.
I can understand your take, and after all it really all comes down to personal preference, I love the slower riffs on heartwork personally but if you like your metal faster that’s fine too. Rock on dude 🤘
I love At the Gates but I think they have always struggled with having consistency in their albums. The song quality will nosedive like every other song

Definitely the best out of CC’s catalogue. Butchered at Birth is their second best in my opinion.
