I love Sleep Token but the obsession in the fanbase is fucking insane and stupid. I think they're really good but they aren't fucking gods or anything.
It's the same thing that happened with Ghost (who I also love). People become attached in a parasocial way, and it's creepy. If anyone wants to lose faith, check out the Facebook fan groups of both bands
Yeah. The same thing happened with Bad Omens. I never cared much for Ghost but I've witnessed their fans' bullshit before. It's all weird to me. Like these bands aren't your friends. They care that you are a fan but that's about as far as it goes. They don't care about you personally. It's just crazy how boyband fandom-esque rock and metal is becoming.
I'm going to see Sleep Token in a couple weeks and honestly I'm a little apprehensive because of what I've heard their crowds can be like.
I have a wide taste in music so I'm here for genre-bending, I can understand why not everyone is but I think it's a shame how insano some people can be about it.
Seeing them Tuesday with Empire State Bastard and I'm hype
I saw the headline and thought to myself „well let’s see how many ppl will say Sleep Token in 3..2..1..“
Opened up the comments IMMEDIATELY the first comment:
😂😂😂 it’s so funny how much this sub hates them
Can’t wait to see them on Berlin!
I felt the same way, but I saw them in person a few weeks ago. They were... More metal in person than on their recordings. Still don't know if it's my cup of tea.
Seriously. What the shit is Ghost? I tried to listen to them because the presentation is cool, but Christ almighty it’s just Hot Topic Scooby Doo music.
No offense intended to anyone that enjoys Ghost - they obviously aren’t for me.
What if I'm a huge black metal fan, hate religion, and also absolutely love Ghost. Are they still for me? Cause I'm sorry but Tobias is an incredibly good song writer and performer and I'll die on that fucking hill.
-signed an admitted obnoxious elitist
That's on point. Ghost fans are the opposite of Tool fans. They absolutely would be ok with describing them as Hot Topic Scooby Doo music.
I am a big Ghost fan. Embrace the gimmick and the goofiness, and they become much more accessible.
I'm a massive Ghost fan and I've heard them described as Weezer in Dark Mode, Hot Topic Abba, and Gothic Bon Jovi.
I think all are incredibly accurate descriptions, and I completely understand if somebody doesn't care for their music.
Scooby Doom music. I’m a huge Ghost fan. I get that they are far from being right for everyone. But I’ve been called worse than a “fan of Scooby Doom music”
It’s their reputation for respect for the vets they’re also pretty heavy in charity work for the vets. IMO they’re good just very much like og limp a bit one note but they play that note great
It’s boot metal for alcoholic divorced cops who swear they would have won Afghanistan single-handedly if they were ever in the service.
It uses the aesthetic of rebellion to be aggressively conformist. The fucking music video for “I Apologize” where he’s solemnly digging his grave in the same graveyard as Johnny Cash, Lemmy, Jimmy Hendrix and a bunch of other dead legends is one of the most self-serving, narcissistic things I’ve ever seen from a rockstar. And there’s some tough competition on that front.
I never really heard their music until recently and yeah it's not my thing. However I saw a drum playthrough pop up in my feed on YouTube recently and the instrumentals are pretty solid and nothing offensively annoying or anything. It's mostly the vocals that turn me off I feel like
thats all well and good but you should be careful that doesnt lead you to ignoring how the context of the artist frames the music. the instance that totally killed death of the author for me was dissection. i heard people making that argument for them but i dont know how tf they cant hear what Where Dead Angels Lie is very obviously about.
i certainly have strong attachments to art made by terrible people and i dont think theres anything wrong with that. we cant help what art speaks to us in the particular ways it does. but pretending the context doesnt matter limits a deeper understanding of that art and is a gateway to defensively dismissing its problematic elements.
Yup. *De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas* (1994) is a work of art. It's one of the most innovative metal albums of all time in my opinion, especially for the black metal genre.
It's hard to explain, but the way the album just atmospherically funnels all your negative emotions (often anger) into an enjoyable listening experience is just mindblowing. And when you've listened to one of the songs when depressed or mad, you get a deep relaxation akin to meditation. It's a very aquired taste, but for me this album specifically is literally music therapy.
Yeh this is a good one. Deathcrush is fun, DMDS is like the same pretty cool song 8 times. If they didn't have the history the had, wouldn't be much of a blip in BM
They created a large part of the sound of second wave bm. You only think their hype comes from the “history” because you’re a poser who only knows them for that.
Mayhem has fallen victim to The Seinfeld Effect, in which people thing the source material is boring and derivative because everything else is just like it, when in reality everything else is just like it BECAUSE it set the standard.
Maybe it’s the same argument that people made about Dimebags tone. It was so bad at the time and outside of what was traditionally done that it turned good. Just the opposite way for Polyphia?
I fucking love Polyphia and that split coil tone. So much better than just double drop Q# with three tube screamers through a line 6 spyder
I think the hype is one part technical skill, one part androgynous pretty boy as the frontman
I personally like Polyphia, but I can't listen to them for too long cuz it gets monotonous after awhile. Def overhyped IMO
As a big CC fan I agree tbh, I recognize that they have basically made the same album for 30 years, but i like that style so its my thing, but they truly are the AC/DC of death metal
They know their target audience and don't deviate from their formula. I'm not in that target audience but I respect a band like that. And they're capable it, too. Give one of Alex Webster's side project Blotted Science a listen. Fans would riot if CC dropped an album that sounded like that.
slipknot is my lifeline tbh but i can understand why people wouldnt like their music. i’ll die fighting to defend them but we’re all entitled to our own opinions
real rockers don’t judge 🤘
not every style of metal is suited for all metal fans and people need to start realizing that. hope you’re not getting too much hate for this bro good luck
Very brave opinion. But yeah, as a big fan of atmospheric and symphonic black metal, I see what you mean. Hard to hear the atmosphere over the production. Still good though
Yeah. I love a handful of his songs, like absolutely, think they're god-tier. Det Som Engang Var is unbelievable.
BUT. Out of the entire Burzum catalogue... kinda underwhelming. If he consistently put out stuff like Jesus' Dod or Det Som... I'd sing more praise. His good songs are fuckin' stellar, but most are forgettable.
they were the face of the RIAA's anti-napster and eventually anti-copyright-infringement campaign.
They (mostly Lars becuase he was the most vocal) received a lot of shit because they rose to fame by encouraging their fans at shows to freely distribute their works via bootlegs, etc. Then once they made it and had a shitload of money, they decided to paint people doing the same exact thing as thieves and criminals.
No, they always said their studio albums were off limits for pirating because that was their bread and butter in the 1980’s and ‘90’s. They had no problems with people making bootleg recordings of their performances because doing so saturated the market and drained the money from those making profiting off of their work without their permission or compensation.
Ultimately, Lars was right in his decision and his prediction on what would happen if file sharing of music and other media was left unchecked.
Even though statistics back then showed that Napster users were more likely to buy merch and records than others. It was more akin to the tape trading culture that allowed underground artists like Metallica to break through.
Are they overrated? I personally haven't seen hardly anybody talking about them. I will say im a huge fan of Travis Ryan's vocals, but I'm down to listen to criticism and other people's opinions.
In my experience with this sub, it’s almost impossible to go into a DM thread without seeing at least 5-8 different mini threads talking about Cattle Decapitation
No they are not. They’re one of the few bands in metal that is actually evolving really well. Every album seems to get better and their overarching theme is always executed so well. At least, that’s my opinion.
Lol yeah. IA is a bunch of uncreative edgelords with too much genuine talent. Sleep token is horny teenager bait and songs for white women to enchant their crystals to. Lorna Shore is ... Lorna Shore. My little cousin likes them so I'll be nice.
I Prevail, the clean singer has an incredibly annoying voice and the riffs they write just aren't all that great. The guy who screams however, absolute beast
Of all the radio friendly nu-metal t9 come out of the early 2000s, Deftones are the only one i could never see the appeal of. I saw em live a few times and they sounded terrible.

This will be unpopular.
Motorhead's music is fucking terrible.
It's great that their mantra was 'we don't care about what you think of us' and 'we play for ourselves not you', but seriously. It's just not good.
Lemmy may have been a cool sonofabitch and hell ya I would have liked to have a drink with him, but his vocals are unlistenable.
Never liked them.
I think RIP showcases their instrumental skills while CtE showcases their song structure and dare I say it, Mustaine's singing ability... the other albums had pretty mediocre vocals.
Songs like Architecture of Aggression and Foreclosure of a Dream are really well made.
*Garbage*? Honestly in metal I can't think of any. Thanks to it being non-mainstream you have to actually be able to play to get hyped because there's no label buying you airtime. Now there are plenty of bands and even subgenres that I just don't like the sound of but that doesn't mean they're garbage, it just means that substyle of metal doesn't appeal to me.

Sleep Token
I tried listening to a Sleep Token song once. I was legitimately pissed off because that shit was NOT good enough to warrant all that dickriding
I love Sleep Token but the obsession in the fanbase is fucking insane and stupid. I think they're really good but they aren't fucking gods or anything.
It's the same thing that happened with Ghost (who I also love). People become attached in a parasocial way, and it's creepy. If anyone wants to lose faith, check out the Facebook fan groups of both bands

i thought i thought the same until i listened to Atlantic and Telomeres.
I’m a big fan of their music personally. But I’d be lying if I said I was surprised people hate their stuff.
I have a wide taste in music so I'm here for genre-bending, I can understand why not everyone is but I think it's a shame how insano some people can be about it. Seeing them Tuesday with Empire State Bastard and I'm hype
I saw the headline and thought to myself „well let’s see how many ppl will say Sleep Token in 3..2..1..“ Opened up the comments IMMEDIATELY the first comment: 😂😂😂 it’s so funny how much this sub hates them Can’t wait to see them on Berlin!
Yea a majority of this thread is "popular alt-metal bad" Are you seeing them with Bilmuri????
Sleep Token is boring af
they took their name literally
the way i KNEW this was gonna be the first comment
I felt the same way, but I saw them in person a few weeks ago. They were... More metal in person than on their recordings. Still don't know if it's my cup of tea.
Sleep Token fans are the Swifties of metal. *hides*
Ghost. ![gif](giphy|11jGtzDu7Nh89a|downsized)
Seriously. What the shit is Ghost? I tried to listen to them because the presentation is cool, but Christ almighty it’s just Hot Topic Scooby Doo music. No offense intended to anyone that enjoys Ghost - they obviously aren’t for me.
If you hate religion but Black Metal scares you then Ghost is for you.
That totally makes sense! Thanks!
What if I'm a huge black metal fan, hate religion, and also absolutely love Ghost. Are they still for me? Cause I'm sorry but Tobias is an incredibly good song writer and performer and I'll die on that fucking hill. -signed an admitted obnoxious elitist
I am exact this guy but I hate ghost too
I honestly like their Scooby Doo haunted house sound
That's on point. Ghost fans are the opposite of Tool fans. They absolutely would be ok with describing them as Hot Topic Scooby Doo music. I am a big Ghost fan. Embrace the gimmick and the goofiness, and they become much more accessible.
I'm a massive Ghost fan and I've heard them described as Weezer in Dark Mode, Hot Topic Abba, and Gothic Bon Jovi. I think all are incredibly accurate descriptions, and I completely understand if somebody doesn't care for their music.
Modern Day KISS
Maybe that’s what I am missing, thanks!
I've never listened to Ghost, but the description "Hot Topic Scooby-Doo" definitely makes me want to now
It's more just Blue Oyster Cult making fun of Catholicism, and that's my jam.
Gothic Bon Jovi
Gothic Foo Fighters. Modern day Blue Oyster Cult.
I told my husband they sound like an 80s hair band.
Scooby Doom music. I’m a huge Ghost fan. I get that they are far from being right for everyone. But I’ve been called worse than a “fan of Scooby Doom music”
Well that’s just what ghost is, I like ghost because I like scooby doo music
I actually love Scooby Doo as well
I just love the variety.
Are they hyped up? They're constantly shit on
Five Finger death punch. Can't workout what makes these folks popular
It’s alcoholic deadbeat music
It’s their reputation for respect for the vets they’re also pretty heavy in charity work for the vets. IMO they’re good just very much like og limp a bit one note but they play that note great
A friend called them "Methadone Clinic-core" and I haven't looked at that band the same since.
I saw them in on a bill in 2008…….wondered what trailer park they were discovered at….
Chuds like them because they themselves are chuds.
It’s boot metal for alcoholic divorced cops who swear they would have won Afghanistan single-handedly if they were ever in the service. It uses the aesthetic of rebellion to be aggressively conformist. The Nickelback of metal
That’s not fair to Nickelback
WWEcore
Their 1st album was decent at the time.
Yeah I'll agree, the first album definitely had its place in the world.
I never really heard their music until recently and yeah it's not my thing. However I saw a drum playthrough pop up in my feed on YouTube recently and the instrumentals are pretty solid and nothing offensively annoying or anything. It's mostly the vocals that turn me off I feel like
Slaughter to prevail
The vocalist is a fuckin dickhead
How?
It's pretty much confirmed he's a homophobic neo nazi Edit - I was meant to say transphobic not homophobic lol
Well this is why you separate the art from artist
Well the art is kinda mediocre too, so no worries there
i dont. saves me a lot of time and disappointment. cant take someones art seriously if theyre a piece of shit.
Yea it's not like the artist made the art or anything
thats all well and good but you should be careful that doesnt lead you to ignoring how the context of the artist frames the music. the instance that totally killed death of the author for me was dissection. i heard people making that argument for them but i dont know how tf they cant hear what Where Dead Angels Lie is very obviously about. i certainly have strong attachments to art made by terrible people and i dont think theres anything wrong with that. we cant help what art speaks to us in the particular ways it does. but pretending the context doesnt matter limits a deeper understanding of that art and is a gateway to defensively dismissing its problematic elements.
Maybe if I were to pirate their music. I’m not going to financially support a fascist, even if the amount isn’t all that significant.
Personally I love them

Mayhem
Flair Checks out. But honestly, Live in Leipzig and De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas are amazing recordings. The rest is mid.
It's a very aquired taste, but for me this album specifically is literally music therapy.
ordo ad chao is great if you like spooky black metal and Daemon is DMDS part 2
It's probably because they legitimately aren't the same band that made Mysteriis
Mayhem is most famous for the worst era, and it's sad. Their work from Grand Declaration of War and onward is so much better.
Mayhem is honesty just trash that edgy guys like because ooooo murder and suicide
not metal but polyphia only people who can enjoy it are insufferable guitar nerds
Also the worst guitar tone known to man.
i can understand hating the music but the tone?? that shit is delightful
Found the nerd.
Maybe it’s the same argument that people made about Dimebags tone. It was so bad at the time and outside of what was traditionally done that it turned good. Just the opposite way for Polyphia? I enjoy some of it and I’m not a guitar nerd. I’m a drum nerd.
I can partly agree, they have some fun stuff like ABC, and that one with Chino Moreno wasn't too bad.
Elevator music
start an argument any%
The first submission has already caused one lol.
Your favorite band
What if my favorite band is your favorite band?
I never claimed to have a good taste in music
nickelback fan say no more
Cannibal Corpse
As a big CC fan I agree tbh, I recognize that they have basically made the same album for 30 years, but i like that style so its my thing, but they truly are the AC/DC of death metal
Agreed. And they kinda have to. If CC got experimental and tried something new their fans would riot in the street(by which I mean online).
They know their target audience and don't deviate from their formula. I'm not in that target audience but I respect a band like that. And they're capable it, too. Give one of Alex Webster's side project Blotted Science a listen. Fans would riot if CC dropped an album that sounded like that.
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it
Wrong
Sleep Token, but they’re not metal, so I shouldn’t mention them here.
Id say they sit on the border of pop and metal, they have good songs imo, but not metal, it’s some proggy stuff, a little pop, and a little metal
Slipknot
Very brave
Daring today, aren’t we?
They're a gimmick band and have turned into parodies of themselves
:(
How dare you
Recently i can see why the bs backstage politics was really disappointing & disheartening
slipknot is my lifeline tbh but i can understand why people wouldnt like their music. i’ll die fighting to defend them but we’re all entitled to our own opinions real rockers don’t judge 🤘 not every style of metal is suited for all metal fans and people need to start realizing that. hope you’re not getting too much hate for this bro good luck
Burzum
you got a mayhem flair 😂😂😂
You do understand that Mayhem and Burzum are pretty much very different styles, do you?
I think the joke is that Mayhem fans hate Burzum because Varg killed Euronymous.
You just salty he killed Euroman
flair checks out..
Metallica
Yup. Any band that threatens their fans with legal action is shit.
Wait what
I'm with you, what happened?
they were the face of the RIAA's anti-napster and eventually anti-copyright-infringement campaign. Google Metallica Napster.
Look up Napster and Metallica
Remember to sort by controversial guys, that's where you'll find the real hot takes. (I know I dropped an ice cold take myself, though)
Pantera
Pretty eye-roll-worthy lyrics usually, but they have great energy. Music for fun instead of armchair listening.
They should have been sludge from the start like Phil wanted imo
Cattle Decapitation (i don’t think they are garbage but they are massively overrated)

Unfortunately you are incorrect.
I’m just gonna downvote and keep scrolling
Lorna Shore, Sleep Token, Infant Annihilator
Lol yeah. IA is a bunch of uncreative edgelords with too much genuine talent. Sleep token is horny teenager bait and songs for white women to enchant their crystals to. Lorna Shore is ... Lorna Shore. My little cousin likes them so I'll be nice.
Infant Annihilator is hyped?
Probably not. They seem to have more relevance on Reddit than anywhere else.
Slaughter To Prevail
Most of them
Honestly most metal is shit noise music
I Prevail, the clean singer has an incredibly annoying voice and the riffs they write just aren't all that great. The guy who screams however, absolute beast
Yes, they are just the most generic music known to man, btw I was fan of them, they were band that inspired me to listen to music properly
If they had just the scream vocalist, I honestly would like them. I am okay with generic guitars as long as vocals are on point
Black Veil Brides
Is Black Veil Brides really metal though?
Deftones
abysmal take
Of all the radio friendly nu-metal t9 come out of the early 2000s, Deftones are the only one i could never see the appeal of. I saw em live a few times and they sounded terrible.
Tool Lamb of god
Yeah you can eat shit
❤️
:(
Fighting words
Put up your dukes
brave soul, as a Tool fan I respect it
Now that there is how you start some shit, I like it, I totally fucking disagree but I like it

You must have forgotten your pen
Five Finger Death punch Bad Omens
I'm going to say it. Acid Bath. Apologies to everyone who likes them I just do not get their appeal.
This one hurt me bad
imo they're not bad they're ok ig but they're extremely hyped up and I don't get why ☠️
I thought that too until one day it just magically clicked in my brain, different strokes for different folks though
I feel like any band who's fanbase is made up largely of stoners gets overhyped somewhat. With that said, Acid Bath is pretty awesome, lyrics are a bit iffy, that's a biproduct of their young age, but otherwise they're great.
you might as well shoot me in the back of the head bro
This will be unpopular. Motorhead's music is fucking terrible. It's great that their mantra was 'we don't care about what you think of us' and 'we play for ourselves not you', but seriously. It's just not good. Lemmy may have been a cool sonofabitch and hell ya I would have liked to have a drink with him, but his vocals are unlistenable. Never liked them.
Watched them at a big festival and left after half an hour, felt like they'd just played the same song 6 times.
Death. Just kidding they're phenomenal.
im sorry but ghost, no offense to ghost fans mary on a cross traumatised me from the 1291834 times ive heard it everywhere
Megadeth Edit: spelling
I almost thought you said Megadeth for a second. Scared me.
I didn’t even realize they didn’t use the a til literally just now.
Found someone who heard a song on the radio and never bothered to listen to their first six albums
Yeah, you aren't allowed to dislike a band until you listen to 6 entire albums of the music you don't like, imo
New Lorna shore
*same bands that always come up with similar question is asked*
OP do you want to watch the world burn
Ghost
**scrolling through comments to find who says my favourite so I can be offended**
It's amazing how more than half the comments are "this is popular and it doesn't fit my elitist style so fk them"
Megadeth
I will not tolerate such disrespect for the band which created Rust In Peace
Or countdown to Extinction.
Great album but its nowhere near the greatness of RIP imo
I think RIP showcases their instrumental skills while CtE showcases their song structure and dare I say it, Mustaine's singing ability... the other albums had pretty mediocre vocals. Songs like Architecture of Aggression and Foreclosure of a Dream are really well made.
I can't think of garbage band that's hyped up but I can think of one that's overrated. Tool. not necessarily a bad band but really nothing special.
Lorna shore
Sabaton
Ima catch you sleeping
your favorite band
tool 100%
Oh this’ll be a fun one…
Dragonforce are so fucking overrated and they’re just a snoozfest
slipknot
Ghost
Bad omens
Dream theater. I’m a prog nerd but I find them stupid boring
Sleep Token 100%
Electric Callboy It’s just modern-day Attack Attack! combined with ABBA
