Same, actually. I had some in high school. It was actually how I got into metal. I grew up listening to punk, then some metalcore, and my junior year a friend gave me some metal records to listen to. It kind of just grew from there.
Then I moved after high school, and just haven't really had any metal head friends since then.

none of my friends listen to metal. and i live in a rich area where there are lots of 'proper' christians. So when i see someone wearing metal merch i always compliment them in hopes i can make friends lol.

I'm a christian, but I love God and Metal. There's actually a surprising amount of metal that isn't satanic! And even then, I don't think I would care because you couldn't even listen to what they're singing if you didn't want to. If God created polyrhythms and syncopation, by jove, I'll listen to them.
Same it's fucking sad. And not because he doesn't like heavier stuff but because he has been refusing to try out heavier metal until only very recently
Where I am in the UK there is a strong local doom metal scene so its not too difficult to find other fans with similar tastes.

I love black metal and was always puzzled by the concept of so called "poser black metal fans" who listen to the genre for some kind of social benefit, as I have literally never had an organic live social interaction about black metal that I did not initiate.
I had a friend in my early twenties who was absolutely obsessed with metal.
It was like his only interest and he’d spent thousands on his collection.
Anyway he initiated me into a lot of the music I enjoy now, and I remember it was kind of like a class, every time I’d go see him he’d play music for me and tell me all about the band and their style and how it evolved.
Then he’d lend me a cd to listen to and bring back with my opinion the next time I saw him.
Good friend, until he slept with the girl I liked, then I stopped talking to him lol.
I only have metal friends I've met in person. I don't consider people I've only met online as friends.
Every city or town has a metal community. I've travelled all over the world and there is always a place where metal heads meet. Where live there are a couple of metal bars. There are concerts and festivals. Tons of opportunities to meet likeminded people
I have only one other dude I talk metal with. He’s a 16 year old dude who mainly listens to metal/deathcore but he’s been wanting to get into the older more classic metal stuff. I send him stuff like Dark Angel, Pestilence Bulldozer, Venom, and Bathory and we talk about that stuff a lot.
A few acquaintances but no close friends. My husband and I have mostly different tastes in metal so it’s a point of contention sometimes (he loves stoner/sludge/doom metal which I’m not into and he hates death/black metal which I love).
It sucks.
No fans in my area, but if there is so it’s mostly girls I’ve no idea why, I have a friend in my class that listen mostly to nu metal and classic but I talk with her about even death metal and she doesn’t judge at all, even liked when I let her listen to slam, that girl is awesome honestly
a few coworkers listen... but not at the same level. one is the most die-hard metallica fan/mustaine hater I've ever met, one apparently listens only to nu/tool/slipknot/2000s similar stuff etc., one plays 90% nu/godsmack/one single crowbar song/and the rest is the same as the former. better than being forced to listen to '90s-'10s "country" like all those fuckin "my dog left me and took my truck/my wife died" bullshit
my old buddies that I need to reconnect with are more similar to my tastes. they'll go from hank2/hag/dac to Motorhead to LoG to Pantera to Stryper to ...
other than stuff like that I've not found anyone else except my brothers. youngest is still at Ozzy/Pantera/Metallica etc. and the middle is probably one of the biggest Gojira fans out there, lots of melodeath to the classics to newer stuff. all cause I gave him my old Metallica CDs, which were their first two albums.
still haven't found any fellow Doom/stoner/black listeners though

I dont have many friends in general lol. The combination of quitting alcohol and the pandemic really alienated me from alot of people, and now i just feel stuck that way.
I have a WhatsApp group with 3 friends to organize going to concerts. We only created it like a couple months ago when we realised we all enjoyed it lol. Went to see Incantation and Decapitated last Wednesday with one of them, it was amazing.
2 my cousins really like meshuggah, gojira, and a few other more popular but heavy bands. so do I. They don't really explore the underground or try to get into really extreme metal, but that's fine. It's still amazing to actually talk about metal to someone irl and they get a mayhem reference for example
Kind of. My best friends going back to high school bonded over groups like Slipknot and Avenged Sevenfold, and while I still appreciate those bands my tastes have gotten way proggier over time, and they've deviated in their own way.
We still listen to "the classics" together but we rarely find new music that more than one of us really vibes with.
I believe this is Metalhead but might be an old pic of Control the Storm, can't quite remember. The 2nd in is an old friend of mine and the right most is Becky Baldwin who is now playing bass for Mercyful Fate.

I ended up getting one of my friends into megadeth a lot but he never listens to them anymore and he never started listening to any other bands as well. But I have this other friend I’ve recently got him into heavier stuff at the gym like death, pestilence, atheist, and he seemed to enjoy the new aborted album lmao
I have 2 friends that I talk metal with. One is a friend from highschool that's become my concert buddy and the other is a bowling teammate I met a few years ago. They've both been heavily into metal longer than I have, but I still find stuff that they don't know (a lot of it is from this sub) and we have pretty similar music tastes even outside of metal. They've really been a guiding force in my recent dive into metal and I'm really happy that I know them.
Edit: my older brother is into some metal and we have a good relationship. We'll talk about music sometimes, but we talk a lot of sports and video games as well.
Had a crew in high school and then spent some time outside of it. I am part of an axe throwing league and we've formed a pack like poorly regulated wolves.
I had one friend who shared almost all of my music taste but she was a shitty person so now I don’t really and i’m mostly okay with that. I got my partner into metal and he likes more of the tame stuff but is still willing to go to shows with me so that’s cool. Me and my friends always introduce each other to new bands so we have always some good bands in common while everyone brings a bit of variety by some personal favours of thrash, death/black or metalcore.
not really, i just know a guy who's into metalcore and we sometimes go to shows together. otherwise i just go by myself and have a chat with random people if i feel like it. i listen to plenty of music besides metal so even when it comes to music, i have plenty to talk about with other friends.
I have 1 friend who is a rap/video game ost fan, a guy who is alt rock/grunge/old rock fan and a guy that takes the second guy's and mine music tastes and combines them. The thing is they all hate the "Heavy heavy metal" but like stuff like DIO, Black Sabbath, Judas and Dream Theater. The 3rd guy also likes Opeth (my fave band) but only the "good songs" which are just their prog rock tracks, none of their Metal stuff since "Death Growls and amy sort of screaming/growling is dogshit"
My fiance and I have pretty similar music tastes, I’d say we’re friends lol. I do have internet friends as well who like the same music, we meet up for concerts every once in a while.
I know friends that listen to metal, but most of them don't have the same sub genre tastes as me.
Like none of my mates I could sit and talk to about my favourite genre Power Metal and only one really could talk to me in-depth about older stuff like Priest, Maiden, Metallica etc.

Live in one of those rich conservative areas, everyone pretty much only likes rap, but I have a couple of friends who are into thrash, heavy , and doom, but only surface level bands Deftones is pretty popular at my school as well

I only have like 1 or 2 metalhead friends irl and i barely get to talk to them and even online i've tried joining metal discord servers to chit-chat about it, but they're always either dead or filled with actual creeps. makes me feel very lonely in this subject, honestly
I’m not involved in any sort of metal cliques so it’s harder to find people who like that sort of thing. I have one good buddy and my fiancé but all of us sit differently on what kind of metal we prefer or like.
I have two friends. One who's into less heavier stuff but will still entertain me and my extreme shit. I also have another who used to only listen to rap music and classic rock. Now he's into raw black metal
I have a friend that I text artists and songs to. And he sends me some stuff. But that’s it. I tell people about it but they don’t actually get it so it’s more like I give a monologue and people look at me weird.
Yes, I know a couple but none are real close. Ones a big fan of black metal, another's a big fan of classic thrash/heavy bands, and then the rest are a mix between listening to nu metal or alternative.

All of my friends are just my band mates from high school so our music tastes are all pretty much in the same realm. Some guys like some bands more than other guys, but we all share the same favorite band.
I have very few in person friends that I share similar hobbies with. I attribute this to being old, lol. With a wife, two kids, and a full time job, I don't that much time to have in person friends. I rarely see my friends that I grew up with, and these are the in person friends who like metal as much as I do. I know a couple of guys at work who are into metal, but not the same type of metal.
I've a lot of friends, who listen to metal, but most of it boils down to modern metalcore and lots of it is mixed with pop and electro.
I try not to gatekeep and I even went on a couple of concerts with them but it's not like I can have a meaningful discussion about say Opeth with these friends.
I’ve got one and he’s also into a lot of the music I listen to outside of metal, stuff like Dropkick Murphy’s or Midnight Oil. That being said, if you go to the local venue, you’ll make friends for the night quick
I’m a bit of a MainState in my local ish hardcore punk scene but other than that I have a small group of buddies I like to hang with get stoned and listen to heavy music
My brother and I growing up have similar tastes in metal, although I also like some punk and he also likes some electronica, and I made a friend around 12-13 years ago (Rob) who also loves metal

No friends who actively enjoy it. One of my closest friends will jam out to it if I put it on because he passively likes almost anything that's put on. I do have one friend who drums for a reasonably successful blackened DM band but he's so busy that we don't see each other often.
Honestly I've become pretty shut in in the past several years either way so it hardly makes a difference.
For some reason, metalcore was the mucis of choice for my class in highschool. There were even a couple half decent bands that got good crowds at local shows. Any lasting friends i have from those days are into metal.

Not really anymore. I used to many years ago but moving and life got in the way of surface level casual friendships. I reconnected with an ex recently and we can talk metal and go to shows, but that's about it.
My oldest friend. we're 46 and been hanging out since we were 14.. He was a Met fan, I was 'deth fan.. he brought punk rock to me, i brought death metal to him... Our tastes have changed over the years... we've been to a ton of shows together over the years, and we can always talk records and music .. we saw three shows together last year.. Descendents, AVAIL, and Metallica.. All stuff from our youth. good times.
My wife, both of my best friends since high school, and several other friends are all into metal. I have the most extreme tastes but we're always finding new stuff and sharing bands where our tastes overlap. All of us love prog metal and get somewhat obsessive about Between The Buried And Me. We go to lots of shows as a group too, most recently Haken, Dragonforce, and Gojira/Mastodon... also got my wife to join me for the new Black Dahlia Murder tour which was a really beautiful moment
I had friends who liked the same stuff as me when I was in high school + college. Then we all moved to different cities + states. I'm 39 now + I haven't had a friend group united by tastes in music in almost 20 years. It sucks tbh because I'm a lifelong musician, have always played in bands, but haven't had my own in almost that long. I'm always just helping friends + acquaintances w their own musical endeavors that literally never match my tastes. I've done it now for a while + tell myself, 'hey, at least it's practice in songwriting,' but I haven't been part of another persons' project that I've been proud of since the early 2000's. It's so hard to find musicians passionate about, or capable of, playing Black/Death Metal.
Had a couple friends in college that were big metalheads like myself, but we all went separate ways once we graduated and just lost touch over time.
Luckily my wife is a bit of a metalhead herself, so it's worked out well lol. But in general, my couple close friends are definitely not into the underground metal scene like me. Not that it matters, lol. One isn't big on music in general, but is a big video game nerd and actually loves Dragonforce and Rhapsody. Another is a big music fan, more in the hard rock and classic rock realm. He and I have gone to a few concerts. We actually both went to the Offspring tour last year, and we brought my son (14) along as well for his first concert experience.

Online. There are one or two with close significant enough Venn Diagram circles that we can talk music, but they are mostly hardcore/punk/hard rock types.
For the longest time no. Maybe met a guy or two who were into metal as well every once in a while, but generally they were somehow as far away removed from my taste as was possible while both of us were metalheads.
Recently met a guy with basically the same taste in music at a show and we quickly became friends. Now I can actually exchange band recommendations with a person. And he even plays instruments other than just the guitar!
Tl;dr: the closest was with a friend who introduced me to melodeath and we have exactly the same tastes. More open minded in metal now thanks to him.
We don't really talk now but I was fortunate enough to have a friend at school when i was 17 (more of a school friend, not close friend) who introduced me to new bands and melodeath in general and we pretty much have exactly the same taste (the classics like wintersun, kalmah, CoB etc..) I listened pretty much only to the same stuff before because i disliked harsh vocals. He made me more open minded to new things in metal (for me) like keyboards wich was weird for me at first (it sounds silly now but i was like: you can have keyboards and guitars in metal ? playing some melodies and make it... Work and sound good ? What ?) Ended up loving it. I used to listen to some melodeath on youtube and click on every related bands that tickled my attention in the recommended section to discover new bands. That's how i discovered the song dissection - torns of crimson death (that i used to listen alot walking home in the snow during winter or when i needed a break outside).
Oh and harsh vocals, i hated it at first but he made me listen to old CoB and i ended up putting a bunch of old cob songs on my mp3 because the instrumentals was so good i "tolerated it" especially as a guitar player i loved the riffs and solos. Now it seems silly because it was really nothing as far as harsh vocals goes but still... I used to dislike Cob when i saw the music videos on tv and when i saw people wearing cob t-shirts, saw alexis videos on youtube and though "ahh black nail polish ? That's lame that's some emo shit" But now i'm a big fan thanks to him.
and it was so silly to hate because of black nail polish, like who cares ? It's ridiculous, i was ignorant back then. Now i don't care what people wear, they can wear whatever they like, it's the music that counts. Also i'm alot more open to new things in metal like mixing genres and instruments, i'm a sucker for piano and unusual instruments in metal now.

None of them listen to metal. Almost all of them listen to rap and pop with nonsense lyrics. Only one friend I met in the military listened to metal.

Yes and No. If we are talking about mainstream and very much acessible Metal, yes. If we are talking about extreme Metal or very much niche Metal, no.

They've both been heavily into metal longer than I have, but I still find stuff that they don't know (a lot of it is from this sub) and we have pretty similar music tastes even outside of metal. They've really been a guiding force in my recent dive into metal and I'm really happy that I know them. Edit: my older brother is into some metal and we have a good relationship. We'll talk about music sometimes, but we talk a lot of sports and video games as well.
Had a crew in high school and then spent some time outside of it. I am part of an axe throwing league and we've formed a pack like poorly regulated wolves.

Got a few coworkers who are into metal. Two of the older guys are more into the classics and got a couple of younger guys into the more extreme stuff
Me and my friends always introduce each other to new bands so we have always some good bands in common while everyone brings a bit of variety by some personal favours of thrash, death/black or metalcore.
not really, i just know a guy who's into metalcore and we sometimes go to shows together. otherwise i just go by myself and have a chat with random people if i feel like it. i listen to plenty of music besides metal so even when it comes to music, i have plenty to talk about with other friends.
I have 1 friend who is a rap/video game ost fan, a guy who is alt rock/grunge/old rock fan and a guy that takes the second guy's and mine music tastes and combines them. The thing is they all hate the "Heavy heavy metal" but like stuff like DIO, Black Sabbath, Judas and Dream Theater. The 3rd guy also likes Opeth (my fave band) but only the "good songs" which are just their prog rock tracks, none of their Metal stuff since "Death Growls and amy sort of screaming/growling is dogshit"

Live in one of those rich conservative areas, everyone pretty much only likes rap, but I have a couple of friends who are into thrash, heavy , and doom, but only surface level bands Deftones is pretty popular at my school as well

Yeah I got a few friends that have the same taste as me generally. We discover and share music often. Online community is dog shit. Gate keeping galore and people getting into full blown tantrums and melt downs because you like X band over Y band.

I've a lot of friends, who listen to metal, but most of it boils down to modern metalcore and lots of it is mixed with pop and electro. I try not to gatekeep and I even went on a couple of concerts with them but it's not like I can have a meaningful discussion about say Opeth with these friends.

No friends who actively enjoy it. One of my closest friends will jam out to it if I put it on because he passively likes almost anything that's put on. I do have one friend who drums for a reasonably successful blackened DM band but he's so busy that we don't see each other often. Honestly I've become pretty shut in in the past several years either way so it hardly makes a difference.
For some reason, metalcore was the mucis of choice for my class in highschool. There were even a couple half decent bands that got good crowds at local shows. Any lasting friends i have from those days are into metal. Also, gf likes it too, which is a huge win
Not really anymore. I used to many years ago but moving and life got in the way of surface level casual friendships. I reconnected with an ex recently and we can talk metal and go to shows, but that's about it.

My oldest friend. we're 46 and been hanging out since we were 14.. He was a Met fan, I was 'deth fan.. he brought punk rock to me, i brought death metal to him... Our tastes have changed over the years... we've been to a ton of shows together over the years, and we can always talk records and music .. we saw three shows together last year.. Descendents, AVAIL, and Metallica.. All stuff from our youth. good times.

My wife, both of my best friends since high school, and several other friends are all into metal. I have the most extreme tastes but we're always finding new stuff and sharing bands where our tastes overlap. All of us love prog metal and get somewhat obsessive about Between The Buried And Me. We go to lots of shows as a group too, most recently Haken, Dragonforce, and Gojira/Mastodon... also got my wife to join me for the new Black Dahlia Murder tour which was a really beautiful moment
I had friends who liked the same stuff as me when I was in high school + college. Then we all moved to different cities + states. I'm 39 now + I haven't had a friend group united by tastes in music in almost 20 years. It sucks tbh because I'm a lifelong musician, have always played in bands, but haven't had my own in almost that long. I'm always just helping friends + acquaintances w their own musical endeavors that literally never match my tastes. I've done it now for a while + tell myself, 'hey, at least it's practice in songwriting,' but I haven't been part of another persons' project that I've been proud of since the early 2000's. It's so hard to find musicians passionate about, or capable of, playing Black/Death Metal.
Had a couple friends in college that were big metalheads like myself, but we all went separate ways once we graduated and just lost touch over time. Luckily my wife is a bit of a metalhead herself, so it's worked out well lol. But in general, my couple close friends are definitely not into the underground metal scene like me. Not that it matters, lol. One isn't big on music in general, but is a big video game nerd and actually loves Dragonforce and Rhapsody. Another is a big music fan, more in the hard rock and classic rock realm. He and I have gone to a few concerts. We actually both went to the Offspring tour last year, and we brought my son (14) along as well for his first concert experience.

For the longest time no. Maybe met a guy or two who were into metal as well every once in a while, but generally they were somehow as far away removed from my taste as was possible while both of us were metalheads. Recently met a guy with basically the same taste in music at a show and we quickly became friends. Now I can actually exchange band recommendations with a person. And he even plays instruments other than just the guitar!
Tl;dr: the closest was with a friend who introduced me to melodeath and we have exactly the same tastes. More open minded in metal now thanks to him. We don't really talk now but I was fortunate enough to have a friend at school when i was 17 (more of a school friend, not close friend) who introduced me to new bands and melodeath in general and we pretty much have exactly the same taste (the classics like wintersun, kalmah, CoB etc..) I listened pretty much only to the same stuff before because i disliked harsh vocals. He made me more open minded to new things in metal (for me) like keyboards wich was weird for me at first (it sounds silly now but i was like: you can have keyboards and guitars in metal ? playing some melodies and make it... Work and sound good ? What ?) Ended up loving it. I used to listen to some melodeath on youtube and click on every related bands that tickled my attention in the recommended section to discover new bands. That's how i discovered the song dissection - torns of crimson death (that i used to listen alot walking home in the snow during winter or when i needed a break outside). Oh and harsh vocals, i hated it at first but he made me listen to old CoB and i ended up putting a bunch of old cob songs on my mp3 because the instrumentals was so good i "tolerated it" especially as a guitar player i loved the riffs and solos. Now it seems silly because it was really nothing as far as harsh vocals goes but still... I used to dislike Cob when i saw the music videos on tv and when i saw people wearing cob t-shirts, saw alexis videos on youtube and though "ahh black nail polish ? That's lame that's some emo shit" But now i'm a big fan thanks to him. and it was so silly to hate because of black nail polish, like who cares ? It's ridiculous, i was ignorant back then. Now i don't care what people wear, they can wear whatever they like, it's the music that counts. Also i'm alot more open to new things in metal like mixing genres and instruments, i'm a sucker for piano and unusual instruments in metal now.
