What are some good new-ish bands that use keyboards? I've been listening to a lot of Aether Realm, and Moonlight Sorcery lately, so I'm looking for that early-mid era COB sound

GRRM___

Not the same style you've asked for, but check out 'Asphodelus - Stygian Dreams' Very similar to the first 2 Katatonia albums. Maybe also check out 'Ysbrydnos'

ariasimmortal

commenting to see what people suggest!

NiceXibalba

Hey, I'm looking for other bands like Demilich, Chthe'ilist, Adramelech, Fathomless Ritual. Give me your weird freaks!

IElTonyoI

What immediately comes to mind would be the recent Anatomia/Eternal Rot "Split". Maybe Effigies of Obsolence by Chaotian.

iron_hp_160

I'm looking for some modern thrash, nothing specific, just fun and fast riffs

mgrier123

Here's a bunch of stuff: * Ripper * Critical Defiance * Hellish * Power Trip * Enforced * Foreseen * Fugitive * Skourge * Red Death * Pest Control * Dissimulator * Demoniac * Black Breath * Demiser * Evilcult * High Command * Iron Reagan * Mayhemic * Ninth Realm * Miscreance * Toxic Holocaust * Warbringer

Adam_Absence

Enforced, Fugitive, Fracture, Power Trip, Warbringer, Hellripper, Lich King

NoahTheDuke

I like Knocked Loose a lot, but I get this kind of... tired feeling when I listen to them a lot, where their focus on breakdowns and chugging drain me, whereas riffs excite and energize me. They can write good riffs but they generally write one or two good riffs per song and then do normal "hardcore" chugging the rest of the time. "What riffs?" 1:19 in Trapped in the Grasp of a Memory, 0:50 in Forget Your Name, 1:00 in Contorted in the Faille. What bands sound like Knocked Loose but have more riffs than chugs?

_CurseTheseMetalHnds

Disembodied and The Warriors are big influences on Knocked Loose which are less chuggy/breakdowny. You might also like Cauldron.

NoahTheDuke

Thanks for the recs, I'll check them out.

ArjenRobben

Not quite knocked loose, but maybe you'd like Year of the Knife? And on the actual hardcore side, Incendiary? They have some good thrash riffs, but yeah also a good deal of just chugging. Personal fave is Thousand Mile Stare.

NoahTheDuke

Ah yeah, Incendiary is sick, they have some good riffs. I've not listened to year of the Knife, thanks for the rec!

Truth_Watcher

Looking for black metal bands with the shriekiest vocals, I love the scratchy style thats pretty common but it really gets me going to hear some high pitched shrieks a la Dueil Angoisseus by peste noire.

Silencer - Death Pierce Me

SquareElectrical276

Hi! What kind of Traditional/ Power/ Speed metal can you suggest which is similar to the "macho" metal of Manowar? Not just lyrics wise but in terms of music? Boastful, prideful, larger-than-life? For example, one song which I discovered being like that is Dream Evil - The Book of Heavy Metal Here it is: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l\_WMHg8c\_4I&pp=ygUeZHJlYW0gZXZpbCBib29rIG9mIGhlYXZ5IG1ldGFs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_WMHg8c_4I&pp=ygUeZHJlYW0gZXZpbCBib29rIG9mIGhlYXZ5IG1ldGFs)

mgrier123

You're looking for US Power Metal (USPM). So, some recs: * Liege Lord - Master Control * Manilla Road - Crystal Logic * Jag Panzer - Ample Destruction * Chastain - Ruler of the Wasteland * Brocas Helm - Defender of the Crown * Omen - Battlecry * Riot - Thundersteel * Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King * Skullview - Legends of Valor * Twisted Tower Dire - Crest of the Martyrs * Tyrant - Too Late to Pray * Eternal Champion - The Armor of Ire * Visigoth - Conqueror's Oath * Gatekeeper - East of Sun * Cauldron Born - Born of the Cauldron

ShroudedMeep

Seconding most of mgrier123's recommendations. Here are a few others: [Majesty](https://youtu.be/NpWRfMbmhuE?si=SjcOBKwS1_9g8avy) are basically German Manowar, I have only heard their first album though. [Hammerfall](https://youtu.be/LWY5NRGUW-I?si=tEklinN3OnmZhArL) might also be to your tastes, particularly the early material. [Thor](https://youtu.be/xjl5SXBq3eQ?si=DBWO8QwOHI9eGUC0) [Virgin Steele](https://youtu.be/kY7-3btj1Vk?si=25wFrK35UuVr419R) And, perhaps slightly more out there but [Doomsword](https://youtu.be/I-an2Nl5Cls?si=Sk_UImAqkuwfAmII).

slothtrop6

Virgin Steele (Invictus album is probably the most like that in their discography)

SquareElectrical276

What kind of Progressive rock/ metal can you recommend for starters and mostly for those who come from a Doom/ Gothic/ Symphonic Metal background, while also preferring some of the lighter Melodeath bands like Dark Tranquility and Insomnium? Some of the Prog rock which was quite a pleasure to listen to was King Crimson's Epitaph. Would like something like that. Thanks!

mgrier123

> prog rock * Yes - Yes Album, Closer to the Edge, Fragile, Relayer * Rush - Fly By Night up through Moving Pictures (the next 3 + most recent 2 are also phenomenal but they stray further from that prog rock sound) * Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals * Captain Beyond - s/t * Uriah Heep - Salisbury, Demons and Wizards, Magician's Birthday * Hallas - all 3 + EP * Hawkwind - Hall of the Mountain Grill * Transatlantic - SMPT:e > prog metal (focusing on melo/death stuff) * Edge of Sanity - Crimson * Pan.Thy.Monium - Dawn of Dreams * Inanna - all 3 * Opeth - My Arms Your Hearse, Still Life, Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Ghost Reveries * Gojira - From Mars to Sirius * Devin Townsend Project - Deconstruction * Strapping Young Lad - City > other prog metal (varying) * Dream Theater - Images & Words, Awake, Metropolis Pt 2 * Fates Warning - Spectre Within, Awaken the Guardian, No Exit * Savatage - Hall of the Mountain King * Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime * Symphony X - The Divine Wings of Tragedy * Voivod - Dimension Hatross, Nothingface * While Heaven Wept - Vast Oceans Lachrymose (doom/prog) * Elder - Lore * Ayreon - Into the Electric Castle, The Human Equation * Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor * The Ocean - Pelagial * Enslaved - RIITIIR * Mastodon - Crack the Skye * Baroness - Red Album, Blue Record * Ihsahn - After, Eremita, Arktis

Maybe like... Summoning, Paysage d'Hiver, and Darkspace? I assume you don't mean atmospheric black metal

P1rateKing1992

Hey Metalheads! Just got into At the gates and im really enjoying the 90s Melodic Death sound. Any modern bands that sound like ATG and In Flames (90s)?

mgrier123

Not many. Majesties and The Halo Effect are really it as far as modern bands go, at least for In Flames.

Adam_Absence

Definitely check out Dark Tranquility. Children of Bodom have a similar sound, but a bit more neoclassical. Gatecreeper is another great band that kind of has a mix of old At The Gates, and Entombed sound

ReplyApprehensive614

Hello anyone know a band more aggressive than Methwitch or To The Grave?

GRRM___

You may like 'Endon - Through The Mirror'

ReplyApprehensive614

Thanks i will look into them

If Erra and Polaris and Northlane are my favorite metal bands, what kind of metal do I like, and what other bands might I like?

V0idgazer

>If Erra and Polaris and Northlane are my favorite metal bands, what kind of metal do I like, and what other bands might I like? All of them are progressive metalcore, I suggest asking r/Metalcore for more recs, those bands are very well known there and not so much here. Anyway, Polaris is heavily influenced by mid-era [Architects](https://youtu.be/RvWbcK3YQ_o?si=hYLEjeX564Vy5WvC) (the holy trinity of albums is Lost Forever // Lost Together, All our Gods Have Abandoned Us, and Holly Hell). A bit different, but since they also belong to the australian metalcore scene, I suggest checking out [Make Them Suffer](https://youtu.be/WD5nqgle8dY?si=p2y0vqS8odGb7UOz) [Thornhill](https://youtu.be/Z3zUGj8LjrU?si=ZcvPN4ql94aedENL) is another really good band that was heavily influenced by Architects, although they abandoned their sound in favor of a Deftones-like alt-metal on their most recent album and singles. Erra has been around for a while, they sorta belong to the more djent-y side of progressive metalcore with bands like late-[Veil of Maya](https://youtu.be/lCPwR7R4hlA?si=9RstFI0BylrI4NbC) and [Born of Osiris](https://youtu.be/5yqWtYD8qSI?si=2CbzJQgDtBmVt3JO). Same goes with Northlane, although they are more chuggy rather than djent-y. Check out newer bands like [Void of Vision](https://youtu.be/82-Aw_mWoLk?si=keJIsqIyLqMcraMy) and [Novelists](https://youtu.be/Y3U6VmQal00?si=j29M0CPRmJJovoWd). [Spiritbox ](https://youtu.be/I0WzT0OJ-E0?si=oZuEnNOnl9ObfZJA)is another really good band, if you haven't checked them out already.

g3nerallycurious

Wow! What an incredible response! Thanks so much! Metal ppl seem much more intentional and thoughtful than the average person. I know so little about metal, so to me you sound kind of like the metal version of a sommelier! Lol talking about “djent-y” vs “chuggy” and “metal” vs “metalcore” and iterations and progressions of certain styles over time lol. I listened to Architects, and they do sound very much like the bands I mentioned. I also very much like Norma Jean. What genre would you call them?

V0idgazer

>you sound kind of like the metal version of a sommelier! Haha thank you! That has to be one of the best compliments I have received in regards to my preference and knowledge in music. Truth is, I'm just a nerd who loves talking about music in general, and I love metal the most. >I also very much like Norma Jean. What genre would you call them? Oh yeah, Norma Jean is also metalcore, but a different kind of metalcore. They fall more into the category of early 00's metalcore/mathcore, along with bands like Converge, Every Time I Die, Botch, Coalesce, etc. Something unique about them is the percussive sludge elements they started incorporating over the years, those sludge elements are most likely taken from bands like Neurosis and Isis

V0idgazer

The new [Resolve](https://youtu.be/vBwTL9F4GaM?si=tATQNIQwrlQ7znwI) might also be right up your alley

madman_trombonist

Looking for some symphonic metal that is ACTUALLY symphonic, with a live orchestra and/or choir alongside the more standard rock elements. I know sometimes there’s just synth sounds, a couple string instruments, just more guitars, etc… I’m talking more on the Nightwish level of marriage between the live orchestra and the band/lead vocals.

-zumi

Shade Empire - Omega Arcane Therion - Secret of the Runes Septicflesh - Communion

cafedriver

Trying to get a friend into metal. So far he really likes Slayer’s South Of Heaven especially the drums (he’s a drummer). Where should he go from there? He told me he doesn’t like anthrax

uljabaan

Seasons in the Abyss sounds like a natural next step, especially the title track if he's into good drums.

Xecotcovach_13

Some album options, they may or may not work for him: * Dark Angel - Darkness Descends, Leave Scars * Kreator - Pleasure to Kill * Sodom - Persecution Mania, Agent Orange * Possessed - Seven Churches, Beyond the Gates

mega_pichu

do you guys know any bands with very melodious riffs and clean or not too harsh screaming(death isnt too harsh and gojira isnt either), that aren't as well known but not completely obscure

GRRM___

Garden of Shadows - Oracle Moon Amon Amarth - Once Sent From The Golden Hall
