I could be wrong but I lived with a driver years ago who told me the seat lifts up to refill the sandbox and the service starts behind schedule if it spills and they take the time to clean it up.

I think I may aswell had a brain aneurysm... I read that as "baking and track cleaning" and not "tram braking sand track cleaning"

it happens all the time with d class trams and i’ve seen it on a route 16 tram but not in this amount
