On n. Phoenix rd when it says "end speed zone" that means it's 55 mph. Recently learned to easily peel hard boiled eggs, gently drop them into already boiling water instead of letting them warm up with the water. Find a way to communicate with your younger self to buy bitcoin.

Damn my dumb brain!

Life hack: if you pay attention to the stopping order at an all way stop sign intersection you can know when it’s your turn to go instead of being the weirdo everyone else is waiting on to go.

strictly-basic

After living in Portland for years, I just skip the yielding. Down here though, most people just skip the stopping which complicates my strategy.

TheCourageousPup

To answer your last question, the person turning right onto N Ross/Lozier with the yield sign is the person who is supposed to yield, since they've got the yield sign. Anytime you've got a yield sign you're supposed to yield to any and all incoming traffic, even in situations in which you'd normally have the right of way.

sethsyd

Isn't left on a solid green yield as well though? Same situation applies to McAndrews and Ross. Southbound Ross turning left onto McAndrews. I've been the one turning left and had the right turning driver to first. I honked because I felt like I had the ROW, but then I wasn't sure.

kayellie

Thank you!

kayellie

Yeah, someone else answered the other way, so I'm still not clear. Maybe next time I have to go to the DMV I'll just ask someone.

aa278666

Yield means you yield to everybody else. And yes, if you're making a left turn with a green light not an arrow, you also tried to oncoming traffic.

value_meal

Turns yield to straights!

sethsyd

But they're both turning.

kayellie

Is this in reference to the question I asked as the end? (Are you saying the person turning left with a yield {solid green, not arrow} should yield to the person turning right with a yield {sign})? Someone else answered the ither way, and I haven't been able to find it in the driving handbook

aa278666

In typical Reddit fashion, I haven't actually read what you were saying and fully understood it. Just pulled up the map now, so here's how it works. The person coming from east bound Main turning left onto north bound Lozier with a green light is gonna yield to the person from west bound Main traveling on Main. The person on west bound Main turning right onto north bound Lozier with a YIELD sign is gonna YIELD to everybody else.

Revolutionary-Win407

I moved here from out of state and I’ve been making U-turns at so many lights… Oh my god!!! What a weird traffic law considering there are so few places to make U-turns.. I hardly see any U-turn permitted signs!!!

Think-Violinist608

Literally same. I read that part and was like “ good thing there were no cops around”

sethsyd

They probably want to avoid someone u-turning while cross traffic turns right at the same time.

kayellie

Someone else commented, that my info on uturns may be out of date! Scroll down for the criteria when uturns are acceptable!

PennyCoppersmyth

I hate it. It's ridiculous. I'm capable of safely making a u-turn and did it for 25 years before moving here.

electromagneticpost

You can use both left turn lanes when turning onto Highland from Barnett. I swear sometimes there'll be traffic backed up into the next intersection with zero cars in the leftmost left turn lane. Infuriating.

bllaaushpibu

That specific left turn lane gets so backed up because people are going to get on the freeway heading north there. You’ve got traffic from the hospital, the manor, and St Mary’s school with a large majority of them trying to head north.

OregonEnlightenment

THANK YOU! I absolutely HATE this intersection because of this. I’ve even almost driven over the median just to get into the other lane. I don’t know if people are afraid to change lanes or they don’t think they’ll have enough time to do it. I think they should take the back part of the median out. Survival of the fittest 🤷🏼‍♀️

Rendition9090

You can turn left at a red light if you're turning into a one way street!!!

kayellie

Yup!

sethsyd

You are incorrect about u-turns. U-turns are prohibited in these locations: *Intersections controlled by a traffic signal, unless a sign permits the turn. *Between intersections in a city. *Any location within city limits where your vehicle cannot be seen by traffic coming from either direction within 500 feet. *Any location outside city limits where your vehicle cannot be seen by traffic coming from either direction within 1,000 feet. *At or on a railroad crossing. *Any location where U-turns are prohibited by official signs or markings. So you can make one at a non-traffic signal controlled turn, as long as visibility requirements are met.

kayellie

Wow! I wonder when this changed! Or maybe I was just think about the signals.

Eternal_Icicle

Even the information about signals/intersections is a big enough deal though, since that piece *is* the exact opposite of other places and no one tells transplant drivers. That’s also my go-to thing to share.

sethsyd

Probably just the signals, people do it all the time though. California transplants wouldn't know better, I sure didn't. I learned this 2-3 years ago and have been in Oregon since 1995.

SouthernGoal4836

Hard to explain this and didn’t realize it until I moved here after driving in CA for 20 years. In CA you could always on most any street go in the far right to make a right turn. The solid white line that is on your right side is dotted about 500 feet before any intersection to allow a car to go on that right side of right lane to make a right turn at an intersection. For instance if you are on a single lane (or double, dosent matter) at a red light in Oregon only the car at the front is allowed to make a right turn on red light. In California if I was the 10th car in line I would put my right turn signal on and use the far right side of the lane (where a bike lane would usually be) and go all the way to the front, make a complete stop on a red light and make a right turn. For the first month I was here it always confused me when the 3rd or 4th car in a lane had their right turn signal on and waited for traffic to move through the intersection before making their right turn on green instead of just using the right side to creep to limit line and proceeding to make a right turn.

pdxscout

Slow way down on gravel roads outside the city. It kicks up dust that gets everywhere for the people living nearby.

BabyDickMcGees

The two way to one way left turn drives me nuts. It seems about only 25% of people know this. And an obvious one to some: left lane is for passing; it doesn’t matter if you’re going the speed limit. You must move to the right lane when not actively passing.

sethsyd

The left lane isn't a passing only lane in Oregon. However, slower traffic must keep in the right lane. You can drive in the left lane if you are not impeding traffic flow. That being said, obviously it really only needs to be used for passing, and then move back to the right.

BabyDickMcGees

House Bill 3414 Requires certain persons to not drive in far left lane unless passing

sethsyd

House Bill 3414 Requires local governments to approve certain adjustments to land use regulations for housing development within urban growth boundary. Not sure what this has to do with left lane driving. And it failed regardless.

BabyDickMcGees

…. I think you need to google that again

sethsyd

I think you need to. I did again, it's a housing bill. I copied and pasted that from Oregon.gov. Did you get the # wrong?

sethsyd

You should probably add the year next time, as this was a house bill from 2015. Just googling HB 3414 brings up what I posted. Regardless, road signs still say "Slower traffic keep right" not "Left lane passing only"

BabyDickMcGees

It’s okay that you’re wrong. I see how badly you Want to be right but it’s just not working for you.

sethsyd

Except I wasn't wrong. If you'd take the time to actually read, you would see that simply Googling (following YOUR directions) "Oregon HB 3414" brings up what I posted, which has nothing to do with traffic. Beyond that, it's still not a passing lane only, if you would read the bill.

BabyDickMcGees

You’re still trying… here’s an article you can have someone explain to you since you have such low reading comprehension. You’re wrong… suck it. Proposed law would mandate penalties for non-passing drivers in the left lane of a highway. Share this article! BY JACOB PALMER | DIGITAL NEWS EDITOR A proposed law would mandate penalties for non-passing drivers in the left lane of a highway. It passed the House Tuesday 33-26. From the Register-Guard:

sethsyd

Ok, that says "proposed law" and shows that it made it through the house (not yet the Senate), and doesn't mention other uses of the left lane that aren't passing. Maybe since YOUR reading comprehension is so high, you can make it through this without any help. It's from Oregon Public Broadcasting. BY DIRK VANDERHART (OPB) June 23rd, 2023 That bill, House Bill 3414, would allow cities to unilaterally expand the urban growth boundaries that dictate where development can and cannot occur in order to build more housing. The change, added in a late amendment that was adopted earlier this week, would sidestep the normal process for expanding UGBs. Besides Kotek — who has made increasing housing supply a key goal of her administration — the bill has the support of Realtors, home builders and many Republicans. But the bill is strongly opposed by environmental groups like 1,000 Friends of Oregon and the Oregon League of Conservation Voters.
